- Today we shall elucidate the fell tale of the Betrayal of Calth.
Reprisal for the destruction of Lorgar Aurelian's 'Perfect City': Monarchia, the unremitting destruction inflicted upon the Ultramarines is among the darkest tales of the Horus Heresy.
Launching a surprise attack on Roboute Guilliman's assembled fleet in orbit of his prized Agri World, the blood of the sons of Ultramar would be spilled by the gallon by the treacherous Word Bearers.

The Battle of Calth was the most darkest moment for the Ultramarine Legion and their moment that they the Warriors of Ultramar will see the horrors of the Heresy in their own realm , and perhaps the key reason why they will never reach the Emperor in his most dire moment.

And then Lorgar realized that Guilliman didnt hate him or his beliefs when he was ordered to destroy Monarchia, but now he hated him with intensity.
It's a pretty sad moment. When you realize it wasn't hatred until now and now you know there is NOTHING you can say to undo that hatred.

There's a story of how bad resupply and logistics got in the underground war. "The bolt shell rattles inside my gauntlet" but it's title escapes me.
Iron Hands might be my Legion of choice, but the XIIIth made that a very hard choice to make.
If I had to sell all but one book in my Black Library collection, Know No Fear is what I would hold on to.
Iron Hands fan? They are not my very top choice but they are up there for sure in my list, I cross my fingers hoping GW will do something with them, anything, such a cool-looking legion/chapter with a lot of potential and almost nothing comes from it.
Just finished reading The First Heretic. This build up with the Word Bearers after Istvaan 5 is captivating to say the least.

Still goes hard as fuck and phrases like this one lift my spirits whenever i feel destroyed, thanks again.

If there is a single moment that forever swung the Heresy firmly in the favor of the Ruinous Powers it was the Calth Atrocity. To me, it is second only to the breach of the webway by Magnus, which consigned the Ten Thousand and the Emperor to a unwinnable war beneath the Imperial Palace, as the greatest death knell to the Emperor's grand dream and the beginning of the end.
Calth and the resulting ruinstorm was the hammer blow that ensured that two of the remaining loyalist legions best equipped to break the siege and win the Solar War would not be able to stand upon Terra in it's darkest hour. The Ultramarines and Dark Angels were denied the chance to stand by the Emperor of Mankind against the forces of the Warmaster.
As a master of a Night Lords army ... i could lisson all day to Guilliman killing world bearers, makes me smile a lot :D
I swear the Horus Heresy/ Great Crusade saga would be a great movie/series. Roboute Guilliman the best primarch.

Been catching up on my lore since playing Hell Divers 2. To me that game would have an epic Warhammer crossover.
Reminds me of how awesome Death of Hope by Mark Sparx was. The "God was real and he hated us.." line was the opening line that introduced me to the Horus Heresy. So many awesome quotes from around the Calth times, the other was the Word Bearer "take me from my home, and I will sail to the stars of your Empire..." monolog.

Personally, one of the things I would have changed about Lorgar is his perceived cowardice. Erebus is the shadowy coward; Lorgar, especially when fuelled by zealotry should be one of the most blindly brave soldiers of The E/chaos gods.
When getting beaten by Horus his zealous ideals should have fuelled a rage within him that would have given credence to him putting up a good fight vs Horus.
I get him being a tortured soul beaten down by abuse, but that should lead into the zealous rage even more.
Frankly, I want him to have a moment where he beats the crap out of Erebus and Kor Phaeron

Its funny to me that a bunch of Word Bearers including Gal Vorbak were terrified of Guilliman. If memory serves he was almost killed by a squad of Alpha Legionnaires on Macragge in Unremembered Empire.

Calth explain's 40k's Imperium dystopian paranoia towards traitors. In less than a day a prospering planet is hit by multiple apocalypses, leaving it an irradiated dead rock orbited by debris.
Guilliman is the quiet guy you know at the office who will take alot of shit. But much like how fiery passion can turn into the hottest of rage, G-mans rage can equal and eclipse that of even Angron or even Sanguinius. And when he does.... well.... the word bearers learned just how mad he could get.

Probably confused with Betrayer that's written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden and also covers significant events of the Betrayal at Calth and the Shadow Crusade.
I mean yeah, it was a classic Word Bearers dick move, but the Ultra Marines DID destroy Monarchia. Turnabout is fair play (minus the countless horrible repugnant things they did alongside it of course).

In FURTHER cosmic irony, Lorgar is such a treacherous bastard that he would later go on to try this EXACT same backstab with Horus at Ullinor. Everyone hates Erebus but it's Lorgar who's treachery knows no bounds or limits, as has betrays even his own brothers at whim. His hubris, selfishness, and callus indifference to all life makes him a bigger ahole than even Cruze. Cruze is outright sick in the head and his insanity is why he's the way he is. But The Aurilian, he's just vicious jerk, his ego never allowing for even the possibility he could have been wrong anywhere in his life. He turned on the Emperor because he couldn't admit he was wrong and blame Big E for everything. He turned on Horus because he refused to admit Horus might lose the war and blamed Horus for losing when Lorgar and bulk of his legion could have stayed and carried the day, esp when Perturabo bailed.
At least Cruze paid for his sins with his life, while his brothers paid with their souls for their pacts to Chaos but Lorgar......Lorgar has not begun to pay for all he's done. If the Raven doesn't kill him, Guilliman deserves to end his toxic life. Lorgar long has it coming, and for all the treachery he's wrought, no traitor primarch is more deserving....
Lorgar tried to betray Horus because he foresaw that Horus refusal to truly submit to the gods would cause the assault on terra to fail and oh look he was right

Had he remained by Horus, the full might of the Word Bearers legion and fleet (especially those two Furious Abyss class warships) might well have tipped the Siege in the favor of Chaos. Taking the bulk of his forces with him in retreat from Horus, deprived the Chaos forces of a considerable number of assets to throw at the Emperor and his defenders.
Considering that Choas WARNED Horus, clearly they didn't see things the way he did. Though one could argue that the Ruinous Power never cared about Horus WINNING the war, only damaging the Imperium beyond all hope of recovery.

Lorgar is a shitheel and so are Erebus and Kor Phaeron.
Just simple plot armor (Chaos gods flat out forbid killing Gulliman) and Phaeron's lust for power prevented utter annihilation of the Ultramarines. Also, remember Lorgar was not present, and he himself was forbidden first hand from killing Guilliman, not full Word Bearer's legion was present on Calth.
Also, Graven Star was not wiped out. They rescued the bulk of thier chapter was did the Unspeaking Chapter. You can read what chapters of the Word Bearers were wiped out to the last but it was not Graven Star.

@@ThorGiske Yep, and Erebus made a similar mistake regarding Sanguinius on Calth, although unlike Kor Phaeron, Erebus was at least smart enough to allow his daemon proxies to accost the angry Primarch to ask him whether he has a moment to hear the glories of Chaos as opposed to trying to preach to Sanguinius himself.
Is there any case of an Astartes taking on a Primarch and actually _winning_, other than cases of Grey Knights thrashing Angron and Mortarion some millennia after they had been "elevated" to daemon princes of their respective Chaos gods?
If the entirety of the XVII Legion wasn't on Calth that's the reason why there's still some Word Bearers warbands scattered across the galaxy.

As much as Lorgar deserves every bit of torture Corvus can inflict on him...did the emperor seriously think razing Monarchia to the ground wouldn't come back to bite his crusade in the ass? That was a severe overreaction. Severe as in, he could've made the WB legion relocate those citizens while taking apart what they built or face exterminatus AFTER all were made one.
Monarchia is just another step of bad lore written by bad authors.
They just wanted to find a way to make Lorgar look less a crybaby, failing majestically and indeed making him look way more a crybaby.
I think the emperor meant for this to happen. He knew that, to defeat the gods he would need to become one. He manipulated Lorgars religiousness.
A lot of the OG lore of 40K Is based in other works including Dune, I think with that as a basis I assume the way The Emperor sees the future Is similar he catches glimpses, strands see different possible outcomes but has to figure out how to get there, I think he knew about a betrayal but did not know the full details; I think he alienated some of his sons, the less useful, the damaged and the ones unbendingly set in their ways, Lorgar included, but knowing the consequences of faith in the long run would mean in my opinion that would had to know also that Magnus and Horus would turn and I think those were two of the ones he intended to keep on his side. I accept though that the power might be random he could see with absolute clarity something a millennium away but see things through an extreme fog that are much closer in time.
