Catachan wasn't always hostile. It was once a barren planet, discovered some time during or before the DAOT. Catachan was terraformed for colonization, but due to a mistake, Australia was used as the template.
Please.... Catachan has awfulness of the Devil and the Mindleaf horror... That's nothing. We have jellyfish that kill you through such mind-shattering pain, all forms of pain, you believe the world is ending--And if you can be restrained from committing suicide, the pain and sense of doom raises your blood pressure that you're at risk of dying from cardiac arrest. And morphine doesn't work. And it doesn't need a 'drop of venom' ... it needs but a caress of its invisible metre long tendrils. So tiny and small, you'll never see them coming until it's already too late. We also have a snail that stabs you with tailor made, highly deadly protein chain attached to a harpoon like grown tooth it shoots. This deadly venom it builds on the fly to suit the prey it seeks to hunt. Catachan is Australia, but on easy mode. Less said about a certain spider that will go out of its way to see your shoes as the most suitable lair to nest in with a peculiar type of delta atracotoxin that arrests the sodium ion channels in your motor neurons so you die frothing at the mouth in a spasmodic fit, the better. Did I mention our bats carry super-rabies and all they need to do is scratch you to catch it?
''despite the occasional kilometre wide explosions which occur'' is one of the most 40k things i've ever heard. a kilometre wide cloud of death is just a normal hazard :D

7:49 As noted before, a hive fleet would be destroyed if certain bioforms were introduced. To stop the Tyranids, a weapon consisting of bioforms that use too much biomass would destroy the entire fleet. The alternative is obviously building ships specifically with reactors that are basically suicide ships. The unthinkable alternative is somehow pitting chaos directly against the Tyranids.
Indeed, never understood why the Nids are made out to be so dangerous. Of course if you're trying to fight them conventionally they would indeed be formidable, yet the ultramarines gave a template on how you can destroy them. Sacrifice a ship to drag the mother ship into the warp and done. Do this on the onset of invasion and at best you're left with mopping up the now psychically disrupted lifeforms that made it PlanetSide.

Oi, sorry but zoologist over here; the difference between poison and toxins is that poison is passive to prevent predation (like with toads) and venom is active for hunting prey. Usually, poison acts on a wide variety of organism, while venom tends to be more specific.
