Minimalist 1/2" Drive Socket Set with Ratchet: When close enough is vastly better than not enough.

  • amzn.to/3Wd7L5T Sure, this Minimalist 1/2" Drive Socket Set with Ratchet might be a bit of a stretch, but it is also proof of concept. I have been dialing in 1/4 and 3/8 sets with minimalist ideals, but the ratchet is usually the weak link. What if I start with the ratchet and work backwards. Well, this is what you get. So I video a 1/2" minimalist socket set for when is close enough and always vastly better than not enough.

    Cool video, and beautiful Snap-On stubby, but for those that don’t know, it retails for $212. Expect to pay close to retail as it’s backordered on Snappy’s website until February.
    The above said, I find that the 1/4 in ratchet and bits are just the most used ratchet around the engine. When it comes to brake and suspension work, then it’s the 3/8” ratchet. 1/2” is often left to high torque things like wheel hubs and lug nuts/bolts.

    I think for those size sockets a 3/8 ratchet is a better fit and more compact, IMO.

  • @kevindavis6042

    Like the idea but I think the bulk of the ratchet will put you in a bind in a lot of different ways
    Please note that I use snap-on tools to make a living and I can honestly say that the 3/8 ratchets are alot smaller and stronger than most people think they are
    In my opinion you would be better off with the 3/8 drive

      Exactly. The battery post example Doc used is a perfect example of a bolt you'd never be able to get a 1/2" drive ratchet/socket to tighten.

    I like the concept of a small set, knowing the socket sizes you need is key. I really like that Snap On flex head and will be getting one of those for sure. I think it’s fun to watch you experiment and put these small kits together.

    Nice pouch. I'm fond of soft pouchs with chosen tools, but I tend to use 3/8" or 1/4" sockets because I'm a bicycle & motorbike user.

    The one issue you mentioned with this kit “they might be shallow” for some task. I suggest the same concept but with pass through locking flex head ratchet & socket set 😊

    Always very interesting to see people's versions of OTR toolkits. A 19mm ratcheting wrench with 1/2" adaptor and sockets and / or 13mm with 3/8" adaptor (you showed all these in previous videos) can be incredibly useful as a space saving no nonsense toolkit.

    I did something similar for my tundra. I settled on the 1/4” master set from lowes and a flip socket set & impact wrench for lug nuts. I want to upgrade the 1/4” Ratchet to the Wera zyklops then I’ll be good 👍🏼

    I'm wondering if a go through socket set won't be any better.
    Because the shallow sockets are extremely nice and are the solution for the weight and size problem you can encounter. Although I believe the pass through can be a bit more versatile except for two things.
    The length of the extensions available and no useable universal joint.

  • @BillDrives

    It depends on the intention as to how you built your kit. Do you intend to do significant/major auto repair work? For portability, I'd go with 3/8 inch. And then add ratchet ring/open-ended spanner set of the common sizes, in a bigger pouch. Add pliers (1 with needle nose), and screw drivers, locking vice grips, flash light. Its easier to create a kit, when you look at the possible maintenance you will need to do on a car for example when you stuck in the middle of nowhere. For example if you intend to change brake pads on the road, change a radiator hose, or oil change, bleed brakes etc...

    @OTEP1234567891011 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Honestly, at this point, you should /really/ consider just investing in a sewing machine and some ballistic nylon fabric and just start sewing your own tool rolls/zippered bags/etc.
    Instead of trying to confine your needs to some pre-existing product, just make your own to your exacting standards.
    You can find rolls of zipper track and neck crimps on Amazon for cheap.
    Even the cheapest sewing machine works great.
    It's what I do.
    With your very specific requirements for certain tool bags/day pouches/whatever you wanna call it, you could start fiddling with making your own bags and pouches and you'd be able to think up something better than is already out there.

    This is a great idea. I have a tote I use for mobile pdr when I’m away from my shop. I always say I can take anything apart with my tote. Well, the other day I ran into a Ford Edge hatch removal and guess what - 24mm nuts hold that lift gate on!!! What the?
    I think I’ll copy this idea but do semi deeps 20mm-27mm and have a 3/8-to-1/2 adapter to use my 3/8 impact

    Interesting. Although I question the value of a stubby 1/2 drive ratchet. You might want to consider Astro stubby 1/2 impact sockets. Their sockets have a hex shaped base that can be used with a 7/8 or 22mm wrench. have you considered a telescoping 1/2 drive ratchet? 1/2 drive and compact often don't go together. Thanks for sharing!!!

    It seems to me that you'd never encounter a 10, 12, or 14 mm bolt that needs any more strength than the 3/8" drive socket could provide. Are there 3/8" stubby sockets that could be swapped in instead of the 1/2" impact ones?

    • @3vil3lvis
      @3vil3lvis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Flip sockets are great until you realize that they occupy the same space as two stubby sockets and then they wont fit everywhere you can put a stubby.

  • @LucScheffers
    @LucScheffers ปีที่แล้ว

    Are those sockets metric?
    If yes, then is, if you want small size, it not more logical to ditch the 12, 13, 14, 15, 21 ? Since in whole number metric bolt size these sizes are not used.
    M6 dia bolt=10mm wrench,
    bolt size - wrench size metric
    M7 =11mm,
    M8=13mm,
    M10=17mm,
    M12=19mm
    M14=22mm

    That is like bringing a knife to a gunfight !
    I still do not understand why you just do not make a small toolbox with one set of just about everything you would need for whatever you do .
    You seem to have like a million dollars wrapped up into tools and that is the best you could do .
    This video had me thinking all the way thru it and after and then some time later , what the logic for this was .
    I know my way around tools and everytype of automobile made and the set that you put forth for a road trip around the corner IMHO is good for just about nothing .
    I guess it would all depend on the vehicle and the situation and then I am either gonna do it right or don't do nothing at all .

    Snap On is NOT minimalist!

  • @richd.4073
    @richd.4073 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think this set is pretty un realistic.
    here are my reasons.
    for portability you can get way more 3/8" drive sockets in that bag and use a adapter to add a few more 1/2" drive sockets for what the 3/8" set doesn't include.
    the ratchet is way to big. a 3/8" drive ratchet will give you plenty of strength for what you need.
    and stubby impact sockets are so specific there not many uses for them. there not deep enough for must studs and way too beefy. your better with chrome sockets.

  • @jollywrencher1163

    Your ratchet is almost useless dead weight for the leverage limitations. It's a cute idea but you're trying to hard to justify that bad buy. Don't tell us about this small bag and then say you'll have large breaker or cheater bars lol. Might as well say you'll be trailering the rest of the toolbox then. If depth of socket doesn't matter than go flip socket, thinking Klein. Stubby impact seem equally useless for this.
