I think they truely do want to maintain a stable world free of wars and that can prosper economically (as part of their strategy to maintain the World nobles power but still). A research institute and interlects like professor Clover are a tremendous boon to such a world which I believe is why they were actually pained at ordering the buster call. Not (or not only) due to sympathy but because they saw tremendous potential in Ohara!

I think most people usually prefer groups of villains to have a leader as a main villain of that group instead of everybody just being in the same position.

Oda has been foreshadowing a Great War for awhile so I think that’s when they’ll be involved. I predict after Luffy finds the One Piece and Robin discovers the 100 year void and exposes the government we will see this war.

I wouldn't say it makes them less relevant. From all we see IM is more like a 'king' figgure giving very broad order and not really concerned with the day to day of the OP world. Am I the only one who sees Russia, Japan, Israel, the USA, and Germany or the UK represented in the Five Elders? The old man with the birthmarks on his face is Gorbachev, the last leader of the USSR. The bald old man with the spectacles clearly represents Japan or even might be a stand-in for all Asian cultures. The old man with the locks has a distinct Hassidic Jewish man look, so Israel. Now the last two are a little tricky but based on my first three conclusions, that each old man represents a powerful country or continent and/or culture, then, the only ones missing would be Europe, which I think is personified by the long white-haired man, who could easily be England, with its long history of Imperialism, or perhaps Germany, which is the current powerhouse in the EU. Tha only leaves the blond man, in his casual attire, who clearly represents the USA. Furthermore, they are all men, and they are old. Dropping it here: most of celestial dragons know nothing about the void century or the ancient kingdom.. they may just be grown as "gods of the commoner" and are brainwashed into believing to be so. A bit as we see with shelly. The five elders though... know they know. And it's this that maked them able to empathize, even to suffer for giving the order to destroy ohara. If the Gorosei truly ARE the ones who run things in the One Piece world, there is much they need to answer for. How can they allow the Marines to act upon their now corrupt ideals unchallenged? Why do they continue to see Luffy as a sadistic threat to society when he hasn't done anything truly "evil?" Therefore the tools they use to carry out that suppression (Marines, Warlords, etc.) would receive special treatment while forces of chaos like Luffy and Blackbeard are direct threats to them
Also just to piggyback off of @InvertedReaper the Gorosei consistently talk about "balance" not Justice and righteousness. They've never claimed to be the force of good in this world. If anything they enable evil because they simply wish to keep things in their own view of balance. This is most likely why they are hiding the void century. Because knowledge of that time and the poneglyphs would upset their balance.

The Five Elders might have gone through a procedure that helped slow their ages. I think they didn't go through the youth operation because they will have to look for the Ope Ope Devil Fruit 5 times after it is used. For example, Dumbledore, from Harry Potter, physically looks the same 13 years after Voldemort's first downfall due to his failed attempt to kill Harry Potter.
Maybe 5 elder stars are something like Papa's from darling in the franxx some unbelivably strong non human beings , but they are not gods so they cannot do everything

There are something more worth mentioning : the obvious inspiration of their design some of our own world's most iconic leaders. - Gorbatchov is quite obvious - Gandhi and Marx are also very plausible - The long beard one might be Itagaki Taisuke, one of the most influent politician in the late 19th century in Japan and the cornerstone of the birth of democracy in that country. - the last one could be a vague reference to Lincoln. Assuming those inspirations are true and have a purpose, they are picked from most of the biggest powers of our world (Europe, USA, USSR, India, Japan) and chosen for they policital action that were taken towards a goal of peace, freedom and equilibrium.
This was such a great video. Definitely learning that they were only subordinates to a higher power definitely took something away from them but I still want to learn more about them and how old they all are.

Theory: Shanks is the bad guy. He poisoned Gol D. Roger with a lethal disease and later he set up Luffy to be some sort of sacrifice (or Luffy is his "redemption" act).

An interesting point you made a while back is that the introduction of IM to soon makes them now appear less relevant.
I wouldn't say it makes them less relevant. From all we see IM is more like a 'king' figgure giving very broad order and not really concerned with the day to day of the OP world.

If the Gorosei truly ARE the ones who run things in the One Piece world, there is much they need to answer for.
How can they allow the Marines to act upon their now corrupt ideals unchallenged?
How can they not punish others (specifically, the Dragons) for the practice of slavery and the human trafficking trade?
Why do they continue to see Luffy as a sadistic threat to society when he hasn't done anything truly "evil?" That is; when compared to the actions of say...Doflamingo, Arlong, Blackbeard, Big Mom, Kaido and the Celestial Dragons.

Therefore the tools they use to carry out that suppression (Marines, Warlords, etc.) would receive special treatment while forces of chaos like Luffy and Blackbeard are direct threats to them
Also just to piggyback off of @InvertedReaper the Gorosei consistently talk about "balance" not Justice and righteousness. They've never claimed to be the force of good in this world. If anything they enable evil because they simply wish to keep things in their own view of balance. This is most likely why they are hiding the void century. Because knowledge of that time and the poneglyphs would upset their balance.
No mention to how they look kinda similar to some real world figures? I recognize one of them being inspired by Gorbachev and another by Ghandi, I don't doubt the others take such inspiration (the same way the admirals are all based on Japanese actors)

The Five Elders might have gone through a procedure that helped slow their ages. I think they didn't go through the youth operation because they will have to look for the Ope Ope Devil Fruit 5 times after it is used. For example, Dumbledore, from Harry Potter, physically looks the same 13 years after Voldemort's first downfall due to his failed attempt to kill Harry Potter.
