    Mr Chan, I live in a cold winter climate and have put my trees in an unheated garage for the winter. Is this correct for them? Do I have to provide ample light and how much will I need to water them. Thank you for igniting my long lost love of Bonsai.

    • @bonsai_wolverine
      @bonsai_wolverine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I keep my hardy trees in a garage too. Deciduous trees won't need light as long as there are no leaves, but you'll want to watch out for them leafing out before you put them back outside so they aren't starved in the dark. They wont need more than a few waterings over the entire season, just make sure they don't completely dry out.

  • @blakelanders6966
    @blakelanders6966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When you make these maple cuttings, do you leave them in the greenhouse? The leaves tend to dry out with mine, or get moldy with a plastic cover.

    • @jambob169
      @jambob169 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you letting them breathe once in a while? If you're keeping them covered or in a bag, you need to open it up or take them out for 15-20mins a day at least. Either that or add some ventilation, adding several holes to the bag will allow air to flow but still keep humidity high.

    Hey Peter, love the video. I just have a quick question.
    I bought some seeds for "Beni Otake", a crimson bamboo-leaf palmatum. I've heard that Japanese maple seeds will not keep the characteristics of the cultivar, therefore these ones would grow as the standard species. I know you've said you prefer to grow maples by seed so in your experience is this true?

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not entirely true - if you sow the seed of any plant, they will be the EXACT cloned copy but very nearly the same. So if you sow this Maple, the characteristics will be about 80-90 % true. Same with fruit trees and flowers grown from seed - except that with certain flower and Veg seeds they make F1 hybrid seeds which are specially bred by controlled pollination to get the offspring true to type.
