I'm a new bonsai enthusiast and just started working on a very small Japanese Maple. Not only have started some trunk shaping on the main structure, I've successfully cultivated 5 branch cuttings I started in mid-March...it's very exciting.
One of my favourite trees, I have owned a weeping maple for years and now am enjoying the bonsai maple. Thank you for sharing a more simplistic approach to pruning maples.
I enjoy watching you so much. You do marvelous work, and you do it deftly, quickly and confidently. This is a beautiful maple.

Awesome video again !! I am a complete novice and so intensely learning as I want to shape and prune a large (~1.8m) exterior maple bonzai I purchased a while back... It's now bushy as in this example and the layers are fading and the branches are becoming .... Thanks again and keep them coming !!

Thank you Peter, another informative video, amazing how the tree transforms when it's thinned out. Just did my first maple, cost me $45 dollars and it's only a foot high, came out great, I am excited to see how it transforms over the years, trunk is still the size of my pinky but it's not a pine so I'm excited.
Next time we visit our friend in London, I am taking a train down to Lingfield to visit this magical place.

Hi Peter, please can you do a video on pruning and producing ramification on cryptomeria? I did a workshop with you in February and you roughly shaped a nursery plant I brought. I've wired it all out and it's got lots of new growth but next step is what to do with the new shoots! Planning on coming back next year for another workshop, so hopefully you'll see it again!

I actually did my first bonsai today a yew and a juniper. Following your tips, they are currently placed in training pots, pruned,a bit wired, and with top roots exposed...
Dont know how well theyll work out, but i want my last one of 3 to be this kind of plant....
Mulberry is a good one for starters
@@drjones8176 Dont like that one. Not as a fruit, not as a plant. No interesting colors. Id get a red plum, but its not sold in stores...

Amazing tree, but why conical for deciduous species as it’s not their natural shape? I think I would reduce those lower branches a lot more to create more of a natural dome shape. I do understand that the conical shape allows light to all the branches though.
More a Dome shape than a sharp cone shape. Look at Beech and OaK trees and you will know what I mean.

In contrast to large maples, I'm wondering whether you have any smaller Acer Palmatum Dissectum at the nursery that you shape and keep as Bonsai? I have a lovely young one that I picked up in Giverny and she naturally looks like a Bonsai - if you do have some in the nursery, may I start a petition for a video on laced-leaf maple shaping and care?

Hey Jack! I also recently got an acer palmatum dissectum and I also live in Paris! I would love to see more bonsai shapes for it too, and I was also thinking of going to some bonsai nurseries around Paris. Do you know if there are any? Here's a picture of mine: instagram.com/p/BxNude1nWWS/ I pruned it, grafted some bent branches, shaped some of them, and also got rid of the useless leaves so that more sun gets into the tree. It's definitely not a bonsai yet because the trunk is too thin still, but it has wonderful curves and I think it will turn into a beautiful tree in time.
You can order on line from our nursery - we have lots of small ones.

Question ❓ can I do a late February winter structural shape pruning on both upright and mounding maples and again in April first flush and yet again in July after second flush as you recommend? Thanks for your fantastic videos that have played a significant role in my maple collection and the development of their natural beauty. Hey Mr Chan. We have a japanese maple in our garden and I am considering to make a bonsai from a cutting out of it. I am not sure how i schould do this. Do you have any tips regarding this idea?

Yes - cuttings also work but air layering is faster.

Another master class thank you Peter ,we have a beautiful maple growing in our front garden that my wife planted about 15 years ago I keep saying to my wife it would be great as a bonsai, she said if I as much as touch it she will chop my man hood off 😂😂😂 I love seeing you work on your trees you are very gifted I at what you do thank you again....
Lol. I just dug my maple up after 10 years. My husband didn't notice he thought it was " another" pre bonsai.

Very nice video! I'd love to have a spring-color maple tree like that in my yard.
The video would have been nicer if the maple could have been moved to our left just a bit so that the other tree wouldn't interfere with the view, since we only have 2-dimensional vision on the computer. I imagine it's very heavy, though.

I remember in one of your videos you talked about nebari and said that "turtleback" nebari is deemed to be most desired. It is a matter of taste, I suppose. To me it does not look natural. But is there any reason for turtleback nebari to be valued so highly?

He likely imported it rather than growing it in the ground himself.

@@peterboneg These are field grown - Have you ever visited our growing fields? I will show you the one I did with the Axe and crowbar. It looks just like this one. Look out for a video I am going to show as a follow up to that video. Its almost looking like a specimen maple like this big one here.

I remember pruning a palmatum in mid summer a fw yrs ago and every branch died back and the tree died.
Not sure what i did wrong so any advice would be great.
I did notice in video you are only pruning new growth and perhaps i had been cutting old wood.
I don't think pruning old wood was the issue. Did it have any other symptoms?
Maybe it got a disease? Pests?

What mix do you use for your maples when in training pot like that one?
My mix for large maples is Peat/Pine Bark/Akadama/ volcanic grit - Those 4 in equal portions
For small maples as well in big pot for growing
just a simple question... if i want a big bonsai, should i rather buy a big tree and cut it down or can i also buy a young small tree and but it in a huge pot, so it has more space for roots and nutrients? or is the bakery boxes ( this is how they are called in germany, these euro boyes with mesh design that u use for other trees) and put a root barrier on the bottom but the roots can extend to the sides? and when it is big enough to cut off the roots around the box? or would that be too invasive to the roots?
Buy a big tree and air layer or plant a tree into the ground. It'll take forever for a tree to get this big in a pot.

The leaves have already hardened - This trees was left out in its position all winter with no protection whatsoever

The best thing to do with bonsai is buy a few hundred young maples ,plant them in a field ,then go and get a job any profession will do.retire after thirty years and then dig your maples up put them in a little pot,do a bit of pruning and sell them.then retire to the south of France.
What would you recommend for someone’s first bonsai?
Maple, Larch, Juniper - they are all easy. Avoid the Indoor ones if you are a beginner and don't have green fingers
