RIT COLORSTAY DYE FIXATIVE VS. NO FIXATIVE: DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?! || Lucykiins

- In today's video, I'm comparing whether the Rit Colorstay Dye Fixative actually makes a difference when it comes to dyeing a garment. I dyed the same shirt and then used the fixative on one side and left the other side alone to see if there are any visible differences. Watch to find out if the fixative is worth the extra step after fabric dyeing! Hope you guys enjoy ♥

✨HOW TO DYE PATTERNED FABRIC DARKER: th-cam.com/video/4Mt5UVshsSU/w-d-xo.html ✨
The salt you decided not to use (the salt in the directions) is actually something that helps set dye -- so it's kind of a shame you didn't use it for comparison. It's a lot less expensive than the bottle of fixative and it would have been interesting to see if it was enough to set the dye. 😉
damnnnnnn 🙃🙃🙃 okay question: for the bucket that i used, is a whole cup of salt a correct amount? idk why i felt like it was way too much 🙈
@@lucykiins didn’t realize the salt wasn’t used
Yes it’s a cup for 3 gallons I hardly rinse between the dye bath and the fixative and my results are great. Cuts a lot of the time and labor out. I rinse and wring out but v quickly
I have heard of vinegar, is that a thing?
RIT says to use salt with cotton, rayon, or linen fabric and vinegar with nylon, silk, or wool fabric. I think it's something to do with PH but I might be wrong. It just helps the dye set.
This was so helpful. Thank you so much for sharing the process and showing the results. I really appreciated the comparison between the different black dyes!
so happy you enjoyed it 😁
Here from your first black vs jet vid. Great job once again.
thank youuuu 🥰
Magenta and Green are colour opposites in a visual science way. Interesting that you picked up on the tint change that incorporates that.
didn't even realize that 😆
Are you sure the one with fixative isn't running clear immediately because it was just rinsed in the fixative?
after the garment is put inside the fixative bucket, it does bleed. but it still holds the color better.
Do a 3rd with just a hot water rinse for as long as you did the one with fixative...
She rinsed one with hot & one with cold
Thank you so much for this video! I have a pretty expensive pair of beige cargo pants (expensive because I'm a woman with a 37" inseam and can only find long enough pants at online tall stores).
I made the terrible mistake of putting a small dark plastic bag in my pocket and forgot to check my pockets before washing and drying the pants. Needless to say, the color ended up all over the pants, but not enough to make it look like they were made that way. 😮
I haven't dyed anything in decades so this is all new to me. Your video helps tremendously and next week I will buy a Back to Black kit and dye the pants. I may see what other colors are available.
nothing is worse than having a garment ruined by a stain 😫😫
a little tip: since your inseam is longer, i would suggest using more dye since it's more fabric. the more dye you use, the darker it should get 😊
As 37 inseam myself, I can totally relate with how expensive clothes can be for our longer limbs. I use rit religiously for a few years now to bring my faded clothes back to life! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
@lucykiins Thank you so much for this tip!
@nalanz07 thank you! This is very helpful in prolonging the life of my wardrobe!😁
I should've just went to youtube first. No website said anything on how to use the fixative other than put the item in there straight from the dye water. The black dye does come by itself.
how did you use it?
only the regular black is sold alone, the jet black isn't.
@@lucykiins I didn't know there was two different blacks. I've only seen the Black All Purpose sold alone or in the back to black plastic wrapped kits.
I just soaked the material in it, nothing I found said that the fixative has to be hot to work. I did a denim jacket and jeans, and the dye literally dripped dry out of both, like that clown in PPG when bleach turned him into a mime.
Your video was the first non Rit video I found. I redyed it[jacket] last night, cold rinsing it now, and the only thing that didn't take well, was the cottony collar on the jacket, so far. It's kinda splotchy and gray. Somehow I got my kitchen sink to circulate water.
@@ItsDaJax I didn’t know there were 2 types of black, either! And I’ve never noticed the fixative product in the store aisles.
I'm wondering how both shirts would look after several washings.
Great comparison video! I definitely see a difference with the fixative. Most of us want the darkest black dye we can achieve!
thank you 😁
✨HOW TO DYE ACID WASH JEANS DARKER: th-cam.com/video/E3t2mvkQ-cY/w-d-xo.html ✨
After the use, does the fixative still work or does it starts bleeding, especially on skin and furniture
the fixative is absorbed by the fabric so once you wash it, you won't see it bleed or anything.
So helpful! I want my finished product to look faded, so i dont need to buy the fixative
use less dye for a faded look as well. it won't get as dark.
Thank you for sharing found some pads that my son got hand me down from his sister need them to be navy blue for school so hard to find back to school clothes when everyone takes it before you even get one so that I could save some money on buying back to school pants
Rit actually has a Back to Blue dye kit that would be perfect for that!
Thank you sis for the reply❤❤
The fixative is BOMB.
yes 🙌🏼
Has anyone found a product that comes in a larger quantity for dye fiaxtive than was Rit offers? I'm looking to purchase wholesale for my clothing brand. The same goes for purchasing liquid dye in wholesale quantities...
i think for dye, they sell it in bulk but powder form. it would be other brands though.
get to the fucking point
the cool thing about TH-cam is that you can exit a video you don't like 😉
Thank you for the indepth video! Very helpful
so glad you enjoyed it 😁😁
Wow RIT is rediculous … bought a bunch and ordered soda ash, now I’m finding out I need this and that and blah blah lol
i think soda ash is used on a lot of dyes to allow the dye to stick. i personally never use it, but a lot of people do. you don't necessarily have to buy every little thing just to dye something. just get the main supplies and hope for the best 🤣🤣
it would be cool to put a transfer on a shirt and then dye it to get that interesting effect on it
i'm curious about how the transfer would look too, but i feel like the hot temp may ruin it 😩
How do you protect an embroidered logo patch on the black polyester shirt if you don’t want to dye the logo black?
the thread of the embroidery is most likely polyester so if the shirt is polyester as well, i think the embroidery will be dyed.
Thanks for this video im about to dye some white linen garments to black so now ik it wont be a pure black like if i were to have black linen garments and retouch it back to black tyty 🖤
i'm happy i could help ☺️
Only Time will tell
Why is the stitching at the top of the shirt and on the sleeves still white? I have a white mostly cotton blouse I want to dye but not sure if the elastic thread used for smocking in the back will dye to black?
the stitching is probably polyester so it didn't absorb the dye. unless you know the thread is cotton, it won't dye 😩
@@lucykiins Thank you for your reply. Is the thread listed in the contents of the fabric? I want to dye white blouse that's 78% cotton, 19% nylon, 3% spandex. I want to dye it solid black. Any thoughts?
@@nancydann1332 it's not in the contents 🙃 another thing you can probably try is dyeing the blouse with normal dye first and see how the thread comes out. if it doesn't get dyed, maybe you can go in with dye meant for synthetic fabrics so it dyes the thread only 😌
@@lucykiins That's how I was thinking. Try to dye it black and then if I find the thread is light, dye it again with the other type of dye meant for synthetic fabric. The blouse is new and sort of expensive, so it makes me a little nervous to take a perfectly good blouse and dye it and possibly have it turn out poorly... No risk, no gain so I guess I can give it a shot! Your advice has been very helpful!
let me know how it goes!
Do you know if fixative works on Polyester materials?
i honestly have no idea! i'm thinking no since they have it in a kit with dye that's for cotton material 🤔
The Rit website says it does, you just have to buy it separately from the dye
have you tried double dying any clothes before to see if it would make it even more black? I'd be curious if there would be any difference, or if it would be worth doing to get a more true, fresh out the store black.
i've never actually tried that. maybe that's something i should test out 🤔🤔
@@lucykiins It might not do anything haha I don't really know. If you do end up testing it though I'd be curious to see!
@@lucykiins Would love to see a video of that!
Nice video
thank you 😊
Can I put in more than one piece of clothing in that dye bath?
i think so as long as you use more fixative. also make sure they're all being dyed the same color ☺️
@@lucykiins thank you!
Pro tip just make sure the items are able to move freely in order for the entire garment to be covered 100% otherwise you'll end up with blotchy clothes. The more Dye you use the darker the cloths will be however the more cloths you Dye the less portent the Dye will be towards the end. Just make sure the items can move freely in the Dye water otherwise you could end up with blotches.
My mistake was trying to cram all 3 of my items in the first Dye bath. I should of done two separate baths with the same Dye in the water but wanted to try and save time by squeezing the 3rd pair of shorts results being the first two pairs of shorts came out great but the 3rd I tried to stuff in came out blotchy. Now I'll have to go get more Dye and do it all over again for the blotchy pair vs just doing the first two pairs of shorts first then using the same Dye water for the third pair. Could of saved 5$ and time but all well at least now my shorts look brand new!
Too much empty repeating ya da ya da
But nice fingernails
What kind of Nail

You repeat yourself too much, less talk, perhaps.
i'm sorry, i have too much to say 😩🤣
