Making a Giant Chess Set Series. Part 2 (turning the pawns) - Conrad Craft

  • Well, It's been a while since my last upload, but here is the next phase in the process of making this jumbo chess set. (apologies for the poor sound quality). Turning the pawns is a good place to start when making your own chess set on the lathe. There are a total of 16 pawns to be turned, so if you need practice or need to knock off your rusty wood turning skills (and I know I do) here is where to start. In this design there are three beads to be turned, one V groove ( what I call a "cut back") one concave taper, and one turned sphere. Wow, now that I see it written out it seems way more complicated than just doing it, lol. If you are a "do it yourself" "DIY" craftsman or craftswoman you might enjoy the little tips and techniques I share. I personally think that if you are going to build your own chess board or turn your own chess pieces that "going big" (making a giant chess set) is a much better way to learn the techniques required since the tolerances will be much more forgiving of small discrepancies between sizes and such. It will also feel way more epic when you finish making your Giant Chess Set than it would if you made a small chess set or a tournament chess set (trust me).
    ...Anyway, without further delay... ENJOY!
    Conrad Craft.

    This was a great video for those needing to learn! Pro tip!: you can use something circular (and sharpened) to shape out the sphere at the top. It is very hard to make a sphere especially 16 of them. Something like a pipe will do. The inner diameter should be equal to the largest width of what you want your sphere to be. Cut the piece down to say 1 inch, then rough shape the sphere and start using your pipe. It will auto shape your sphere for you. And be accurate everytime.

    It seems like the pawn is simpler to make than all the other chessmen. I enjoy your show very much.

    Conrad, I just ran across your videos and I gotta tell you I'm impressed. I have never used a lathe, thinking about buying one and you have opened my eyes to the complexity as well as the fun of woodturning. I too look forward to seeing all your videos in this series. Just subscribed and thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    Hi Conrad, i just came across your channel in the last couple of days. With all the turning you are doing fot the chess pieces, you must have to touch up your tools. Would you be able to create a video on how you fo this for those that are just beginning to use the lathe?

    • @ConradCraft

      Dan Holloway definitely will do a few simple vids for that ... Though without using a jig it really is a matter of just gaining the experience of doing it over and over to get better.

    Nice work, one question. The frames on the drawing pages you uses, are they equsl as quarter of an inch each? Thank you for the video and your answer (I hope), Júlíus

    You said the sanding is pretty straight forward... I'm on my third set of chess pieces at the moment (very minimal in design) and have found that sanding is anything but straight forward. I can't tell if I'm doing something wrong or if I'm just being more anal than most. If I sand on the lathe with the lowest speed setting and move the sandpaper back and forth pretty quickly then work my way up the grits from 220-600, there are sanding scratches against the grain. I've even tried hand sanding a piece with the grain (up to 600) to get rid of all the horizontal scratches then putting it back on the lathe to sand with 600 but even then I can see the horizontal/diagonal scratches from the 600. Am I being to critical with my inspection or am I doing something wrong?

    Hello Conrad,
    I am interested in buying a large set just like you’re showing here. Please let me know how I can do that. Do you have a store?

    Hello, good job. Can you tell me where can I buy the machine?

    • @ConradCraft
      @ConradCraft  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I can tell you it is called a lathe and they are usually sold through woodworking stores such as "Rockler" and woodworking magazines. You can buy also buy one through Harbor Freight. There are probably thousands of places to buy on line so I suggest you Look "lathes" up.
      Cheers!

    Hello Conrad, I wanted to know if you could make a smaller version (tournament sized) of this chess set for sale. If so I'd be very interested in purchasing a set and perhaps the matching board. Say around a 4" king and 2.25" playing squares for the board. Please send me an email message and thank you for your time. You creations are outstanding! Best regards...Jorge R.
