THE QUEEN : Making a Giant Chess Set episode 6 . Conrad Craft. QUEEN SACRIFICE!!! DOUBLE EXCLAM!!

  • Hi everyone!
    I am ready to start blitzing out these last few videos like a game of bullet chess / speed chess with 10 seconds left on the clock. But I refuse to sacrifice the queen video quality for the sake of speed, so as usual, here is a detailed video of the process I went through to make the queens pieces for my hand made chess set. The queen is an important piece to get right, from design all the way through the turning process and finally to the carving of the crown (circlet). The queen is the strongest piece and so it needs to be made to look strong. But the queen is also a feminine piece and so it needs a certain grace and elegance. These two design factors help reflect the true nature of the queens character on the chess board and the complexity she brings to the game. (WOW, I almost sound like I know what I'm talking about.... hmmmm perhaps I should play some chess and upload the videos.....;) ) any way. In this video I turn the Chess Queen and carve the queens crown to the proper shape.
    I had a great time making this chess set, and though turning each piece by hand is a laborious process, the satisfaction of holding those hand made chess men, seeing them take shape on the lathe, it is an indescribable feeling of accomplishment that comes over you after the last piece is turned. I am so happy to have all you "do it yourself" people, woodworkers, wood turners, Crafters, Makers, chess players, and random TH-cam nerds along for the journey.
    Hope you enjoy!
    Conrad Craft

    Another excellent video of a piece of work that you make look so simple... the Queen looks great, and I can’t wait for your remaining video on the King....and others... my favourite was, without doubt, the Knight; which was almost entirely hand carved.... keep up the good work...

    Not a stoner anymore, but watching this baked is an enticing thought. It's hypnotizing to see something appearing out of a cylinder like that.
    Also, the more that comes off, the more elegant the Queen seems to become. Awesome...

    That was fun to watch. If you make a set of chessmen for a serious player, do four queens. That’s the new standard, to accommodate promoted pawns.

    • @ConradCraft
      @ConradCraft  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Curt LaFond I almost did four queens for this set... But this is in so many ways not a tournament set it probably wouldn't have really added anything of great significance or utility to this set... So only 2 queens this time.

    Nice job! Just a little shame about the glue up job ; your Queen is not made out of a single piece of Sycomore (?) I believe. On the large bead just under the crown there are two glue joints. Maybe it was hard to find a single piece thick enough. I'm not a woodturner (although I have done a fair amount in my time), I'm a cabinet maker and restorer. For really fine sanding, it's better to start with a slightly coarser paper, say 120. After each sanding, dust off thoroughly - going to say 320 or 400. You can then use the sawdust in your palm and "burnish". You'll be surprised at the extremely silky finish. Plus I make sanding sticks- like giant nail files. I find that freehand sanding tends to reproduce the unevenness of the finished turning. You could try- no obligation. I restored high-end Antiques in Paris France, and believe me, finish was a religion! This is the second of your videos I've watched, and enjoyed. Keep up the good work. Cheers

    • @musamor75
      @musamor75 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, I forgot a detail. After the first sanding, and dusting off, you should moisten the piece with hot water. This raises the grain, and when you sand to the next grit, the finish is even smoother. If you do this between ALL grits, you get a fantastic finish, especially if you burnish with the sawdust. This helps when you want to add on a finish at the end. Say shellac for example. That's it. All the best.

    Hello Conrad, great work, can you just let me know which tools you used to hollow out the part in the queen's coronet? (Perhaps scooped out is more accurate?). I'm considering making my own set sometime around November/December, and I'm looking at which tools I should be using, so I can buy those. At the moment, I have my eye on a spindle gouge, roughing gouge, parting tool and skew chisel to get me started. Should I get a bowl gouge for this though? Thanks in advance!

    • @ConradCraft
      @ConradCraft  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maik Arets Hi there! A bowl gouge is a really handy tool for turning in general... But I don't think you actually need one for this project. For creating the concave top of the queens coronet i did use what amounts to a home made micro bowl gouge. I made this micro bowl gouge by grinding a bowl gouge tip shape on a really cheap harbour freight carving gouge. You can usually get a whole set of these things for 10 bucks and then grind them into what ever shape micro tool you want. Pretty handy. m.harborfreight.com/wood-carving-set-11-pc-62673.html

    • @ConradCraft
      @ConradCraft  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maik Arets i also grind a few different shaped micro scrapers out of these cheap gouges and chisels. making Scrapers that fit the profile of the shapes you wish to make is the easiest and least risky way to turn. Having nice tools is great, but I find I like not feeling guilty about grinding the heck out of a cheap tool so it fits my needs. Saves time and the stress of a big learning curve.

    I was hoping for some kind of reaction from the young gentleman, but there you go, maybe he needs absolutely no advice. Happy woodworking. I hope you enjoy Chess (I'm sure you do). Oh by the way, the international official size of the squares is 58 millimetres. You'll have to convert that (it's something under 2"). Your country is one of the last to use the Imperial System. Very awkward at the best of times. A cabinet maker colleague of mine (in England) had to divide the inside of a drop leaf bureau to make partioning. 39 5/16" into seven compartments - six smaller and one double for the middle. That means 8 dividers - 2 of which were 5/16ths thick and the rest 3/16ths. Result please ? It's a riddle to start with, but adding the complication of fractions turns it into a nightmare. Using numerals is so much easier. Steve had to use a rod system; the poor chap nearly went mad. Allez jeune homme, bonjour de la France.

      @@ConradCraft ok. i noticed later on it wasn't doing it.

    • @ConradCraft
      @ConradCraft  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      mainlymusicman much of the wobble is caused by a belt drive setup that needs more tension.... As I carve material away from the piece there is less weight/resistance for the motor and belt to have to handle... So the more I turn off the less pronounced the wobble is.

    GREAT video! A lot of talent there! Chess is not called "The King of Games", without a reason. Once one learns it, all other board games are trash. As are all silly electronic thumb-joint wearing time wasting crap. Get a life........learn chess! I taught all my kids to play and I STILL can't beat them!
