  • I know I know...Finally right. I have had an exceedingly busy/productive summer with work and traveling... with uploading videos....eh... not so much. Well, hopefully it is worth the wait!
    Before I go further, let me say that the tools and techniques I will be using in this video ARE NOT being used as a representation of the fastest, most efficient, or the best way to carve a chess knight...
    My intention with this video is to present the task of carving a knight using simple, primitive techniques with tools that are cheap and fairly readily accessible to most of my viewers. Could you use a band saw?...of course. could you power-carve the whole thing with the dremmel or rotary tool?... absolutely. Can it be done faster and easier than I show here? YEP...... I simply want anyone watching to be able to do it with what they have on hand for super cheep.
    (ffwheeewwww... now that thats said). So here you go you amazing, do it yourself loving, wood working, chess playing, TH-cam watching, hand crafting nerds!!! ENJOY
    VIDEO DESCRIPTION
    Make the pawns...check. Make the rooks...check. Make the bishops...check! Make the knights.......... :)
    What is one of the biggest determining factors in the pricing a chess set? HOW THE KNIGHTS ARE CARVED! Carving the knights in a chess set is one of the most daunting tasks to consider when taking on the chess set project. The knight is definitely the most tricky of the minor pieces... And there are so many Knight designs to take into account... French, German, English, Dubrovnik, and the plethora of stylized luxury knights found in high end sets. The style you choose will in many ways be determined by the intended use for the chess set. do you want a chess set for the chess club? Do you need one For rough tournament play or for hustling chess in the park? If so, You probably are not going to want a pretty rough and tough set with no frills or fine details that could be easily damaged by one of those games that end with the board being turned over.
    the chess set I am making here was for a New York client that wanted a custom designed heirloom quality piece as a gift to her husband... So in this video I will be starting the process of making a more stylized and refined set of knights. It is a JUMBO chess set after all, and as such it is intended to be admired as a quality piece of hand made craftsmanship. lets see if I am up to the challenge.

      Thanks for the kind words! It's long... And not all in one video.... Making it more work to watch. I need to upload a fast and dirty knight video that really shows a much easier and faster set of steps. That's why I think it has dislikes.

      Hi Mike. I am using soft maple and african mahogany.
      "Craft by name, Craft by nature". That is a beautiful family phrase!
      I am descended from the Crafts of Picayune and Cole kills Mississippi.. And then The Brazos valley. Have you relatives from those parts?

    • @mikecraft4506
      @mikecraft4506 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are all mainly UK based but have had US relatives who claimed we had some red indian blood from way back in time. Our family trade was as Coopers working for Watney’s Brewery. With a service record of 345 years in total. I was the first to break this tradition and have been very successful and had my own Advertising agency in the city of London. Other family members are following this direction now. My love for carpentry is still in my blood and I love work in my workshop. We have a few talented and clever members of the family and my father was very good at cricket playing for England up until the Second World War. During the war he was a James Bond character being a spy in Egypt and Scilly.. All at the time of the Suez crisis, he had done something very great during this time of which we do not know anything. After retiring from the secret service with me aged twelve he took great pleasure in taking me to the cinema to watch Dr No he gave a few hints that he had followed the same training. I could write a book but this isn’t the place for it. Love your work and wish you much success. Craft by name Craft by nature.

    I don't know if I have the hand strength anymore to do all that carving. I might have to cheat and resort to using a Dremel. I have quite a few small round and pointed rotary cutting tools intended for jewelry making (carving out recess in gold to fit gems) that should work fine on wood.

    Why use laminated wood to make what some consider the most ornate piece of a chess set?

    • @ConradCraft
      @ConradCraft  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Was definitely not my first choice. My hardwood supplier was simply out of the 3x3 maple stock i required to do this project with single pieces. So I had to make due with laminating up blanks. I chose to laminate 3 1 inch pieces so that at least the lamination lines would be symmetrical and leave a solid piece in the center for a perfectly clear head with no glue lines.
