My dog can't possibly be the only one: he redirects out of frustration, adrenaline, high arousal, all the same as what you're describing BUT...
My dog's trigger is that he's super friendly, wants to say hi to anyone and everyone who might look at him when we're on a walk, any strangers getting out of a vehicle, etc
But I cannot allow him to meet all these strangers, not that I would want to, but he is also very likely to jump on them.
When he gets over aroused, he has lunged at me over and over, biting my hands. Another scenario: go to empty park to practice recall. As soon as I clip the long line on, bam! Big drama, lunging and biting until we're both exhausted.
IF I see a "trigger" coming up, I calmly put him in a sit and he's usually able to control himself but I'd really like to not have to micro manage this behavior constantly.
My dog is now 7 yrs, a very big mahogandy golden retriever. I "rescued" him 6 months ago.
Thanks for sharing your story 💚 It sounds like he could use an alternative that lets him move a bit more. Sitting uses up a lot of impulse control and then it's gone at one point.
My first idea would be to build up a new default whenever he saw somebody with a well-fitting alternative. To build that up really well you would need a quiet area at first and only add distractions, when you would bet on him being successful.
As for the leash, my first instinct would be to check your body language and how the training setting is done.
Of course, for a very excited pup that recently moved into a new home, taking care of the overall relaxation can also help a lot 👍
This has happened to me more than a few times
I'm so sorry 😔 it's a horrible feeling
