Thanks for the feedback! It was actually a lot of fun, and also helped me personally to see where the bumpers would affect the lines I would normally take in a practice race. Although I still need some experience with the Golden Fox's handling, if it wasn't obvious in the video 😂
You edited them into a Practice race? 😂 That's hilarious. Nintendo should let us turn bumpers on in Practice. I have a feeling they _wont,_ but it'd be nice.
The funny thing is that it actually doesn't look THAT much different from the game! No shadows and the sprites don't turn... but it's passable if you squint lol
One simple comment to make on this. Your speed can vary by vehicle type, and where those bumpers will be when rounding a corner can vary depending on the top speed of that vehicle and if you're boosting. I think it is best to memorize not only which of the 5 lanes they spawn on in each level, but also how to handle their spawn in every vehicle. Most of the time, frontrunners and first place drivers on maps like mute city and big blue are going to be in golden foxes. However, in a grand prix setting, a pro player using the gray bumper method can easily bring a wild goose into first place on the last 3 tracks of the prix, and it is important to understand how to pass the bumpers in a vehicle with a higher top speed and higher grip. That said, the transition shouldn't be that bad, as the bumpers will not spawn in a different lane depending on the vehicle in first place. Also, the editing in this is fantastic. It's quite hard to edit vehicles onto a moving picture like that!
Thanks for the compliment! I do a decent job editing, but I am by no means an expert. I'm just glad that I was able to make it work like I had visualized.
i'm reviewing this 4mos later and it is all very helpful. one thing i noticed though is that some bumpers do a "prep" before turning where they outswing themselves past their rail to complete a sharp turn. one example is mc2 after the rotunda where bumpers take incredibly wide turns
Golden Fox's tight cornering and highly responsive handling makes it noticeably easier to evade bumpers than other machines. Wild Goose can seriously be a struggle to make a lot of these last lap turns without hitting anything.
@@heyniles No, Stingray is also hard to steer in its own special way. Falcon and Fox have much more lightweight handling. They can turn on a dime because they're less locked into their momentum, even in spite of Fox's low grip.
@@wesnohathas1993 I suggest you check out my video where I break down the stats on each of the vehicles - the Fox has measurably the worst handling of all 4 vehicles. Now, that's not to say that you might be most comfortable turning with the Fox. In fact, you're right that the Stingray can be more difficult to pilot if you're used to power sliding into turns.
Hopefully this helps me stay in 1st place. On the rare occasion i get into 1st, im always screwed over by the bumpers or someone turning better than me...
Thanks! I really didn't expect it to come out that well because I wasn't sure I'd be able to do the keyframes, but it worked much better than I thought it would!
Bumpers are tough to track when the course cuts to the left or right. It's usually a good idea to use a super boost here because it'll often carry you through the next couple of corners.
For sure! This is one of MANY ideas on my list of videos to make. A quick tl;dr version for the comments section: release the gas for long sweeping turns until you straighten out, use the lean buttons on sharp tight turns. 😉
Would you be able to do some sorta top 10 beginner tips video? I wanna get more into this game but my most comfortable F-ZERO game was GP, and the transition from that to 99 has been rough
Absolutely! It's in the works already. I just want to make sure I'm giving good & useful tips that will not only help, but isn't the same old stuff everyone else is saying. Also, I'm learning new things each time I do research for one of these. Wait until I put together the car comparisons... 😁
I know that this has nothing really to do with the video, but it is about the game. There's literally nothing anywhere saying if you/ we should be using the antenna or not. I always used it because the game would always tell you to with their little recommendations while waiting to play. If you could please let me know on your opinion I'd truly appreciate it. Thank you
@@TheSeanMcC1 I will do a little bit of research and present my findings in a video, this is a very good question. And thanks for stopping by my live stream!!
During team battles, there are also pink and green bumpers, which replace the blue bumper and like the blue bumper, are controlled by a crashed out player. The colors corresponding to the team they were one when they crashed out. Unlike the blue bumpers which have a 30 second time limit before automatically exploding, the green and pink bumpers have no time limit . Later on In standard 99 races, there's also the big yellow bumper, an ai controlled bumper which drops a lot of super sparks when collided with. Only one such yellow bumper appears per race
The yellow bumper can actually spawn multiple times in a race, but it's usually back in the pack; this works as a "rubber band" mechanism to help racers falling behind build up their super boost faster.
I don't know why you played the same clip twice, once without commentary. next time I would just get straight to the spawn point graphic and commentary
I appreciate the input - it was a style choice, to be honest. I would totally understand if you decided to go with a different choice if you had made the video. Thanks for the feedback! 👍
I know editing those bumpers in with key frames must be a pain in the butt, but it would be cool if for your next video, you grab the other bumper sprites, so it looks like they are actually turning. It can help make it look more like they do in a normal race. Or, better yet, record a successful front running race so you can simply use that footage rather than having to edit them in. It’s ok if you don’t though, I understand that can be very time consuming.
Thanks! I actually had a lot of fun making this, and I was honestly surprised I was able to keyframe the bumpers like that (even if they are slightly scuffed).
Pretty much, yes. Turns are tough because they seem to change direction; the best way to avoid them is by either going to the outside or aiming right at them (they will follow the turn and move out of your way)
seems erratic that they will return to their lane after being bumped so skillful players can nudge them out and make then move sideways to hurt other players
Just knowing they stay in their lane is massively useful
It gets tricky on some of the turns, but you can at least have an idea of whether to go inside or outside.
Yeah I second that, good to know. Thanks!
Great job editing in the bumpers into that practice race. I didn't fully realize what was going on until I saw it in action. Very impressive.

Could be that you are confusing the Fox with Stingray, regarding the cornering abilities?

I've noticed that tracks with similar pieces, like Mute City I and II, shared segments have similar or even identical bumper placements.

Speed up like a boost and hard brake juat to get you.
The bumper A.I has been my biggest hurdle to get 1st place consistantly
given this I wonder why they dont have a "practice with bumpers" mode... like they do spawn the same every time so why not?
This would be SUCH a great inclusion into practice mode!
We need a bumper free playlist . I’ve lost so many games because of them .
Classic Mode was "less bumpers" but was also more challenging to catch up to leaders because of this.
Great edit!
