Gauteng is a shortening of the phrase gau(gold) e teng(is here or is present) it does not mean only gold, other than that good video if you want more fun names try the provincial capitals and major cities

    • @ChristoAbrie
      @ChristoAbrie ปีที่แล้ว +3

The "au" in Gauteng is actually pronounced similar to the "ow" in words like wow, how, etc. And it literally translates as "place of gold"

One interesting name confusion is that of Port Elizabeth (which has a new name). Unlike the other Port-cities in the Eastern Cape, the city wasn't named after a British Monarch (Elizabeth II was already on the Throne at that point), it was named after the founder's wife.

A video that could generate lots of views might me the name changes streets, towns and cities in South Africa. The idea is to replace the "colonial" names with indigenous names, but it is not without controversy.

I visited South Africa in 2020 from Philly. It blew me away! I stayed in Jo’Burg CDB in Franklin Lofts which were dope af! I hung out a lot in Melville and Rosebank and out in Sandton. You would think you were in California from the looks of it. I went to Kruger National and stay at Skakuza for 3 days. It was one of the highlights of my life. As a Durban baby, I agree Kwa-Zulu Natal is a 10/10. I never get bored of exploring this province. I'm surprised the Western Cape is so low. Most people want to flock to CT.
I hate Gauteng, I grew up there for a big part of my life and felt so depressed, it was boring and the only exciting things to do back in the 90's and early 2000's was the glass bridge at Menlyn Mall and being amazed at the painted roof in Monte Casino.

The best part about North West is looking at the map it appears to actually just be in the North Middle, Northern Cape is almost entirely further west, And a decent portion is about the same amount north as North West. For that, I'd give it some extra points for not being entirely accurate, At least a 2.

Some exceptions being Gold, Texas; Gold, Pennsylvania; Gold, North Carolina; Golden, Colorado; Goldsboro, North Carolina; Goldberg, German; El Oro, Mexico, and Golden City, Missouri. There is also a city named Gold in India. Also, there's the Gold Coast in Australia and the Gold Coast neighborhood in Chicago, and the 740 locations of Gold's Gym. 😜

But you skipped that the original British colony in South Africa was the "Cape Colony." I don't know it's exact borders, but I bet the three modern provinces largely correspond to the old colony, and surely historical legacy is worth at least a half point?
Also, I enjoyed "North West" because it made me think of the "North West Territory," which is still a subunit of Canada and certainly in The North but isn't in the west (any more; at one point the NWT was everything between Ontario, the Arctic Ocean, British Columbia (at the time a separate country) and Russia (when they still controlled Alaska).

Some important things you missed. The Free State was initially called Transorania because it was across the Orange river. That's where the orange came from. Then it became Orange Free State and then Free State.
When South Africa had 4 provinces, the Cape Province was one. That split into the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape. Kwazulu Natal used to just be Natal, but it is the home of the Zulus. Hence the name today.

The Orange remained in Free State until political changes in 1994. The name came from the Orange river (perhaps named to honour the Price of Orange in Holland). An alternate name was Trans (across) Oranje (Dutch for the colour, not the fruit). Likewise at that time the 4 provinces above that other side the Vaal (Dutch for pale in colour) river were 1 state named Transvaal.

Completely uninformed take here, but: Gauteng - Gaut - Goud (Dutch word for Gold)?
In Dutch there is no real difference between 'au' en 'ou'. So if one voiced the 'd' pretty harsh, more like a 't', I could see this misunderstanding taking place.
But yes, the pronunciation is completely different, but the likeness of the spelling does make me ponder a bit. :)

Another example of SOuth Africa's regime change not going nearly far enough. Why the hell are any of these provinces still named from English or Afrikaans? Generally when you throw off the shackles, you're meant to take down the colonizer's runner up trophies.

Maybe because there are still living English and Africaans in the country? What are they supposed to do, Einstein - flee into the water and die? 😤

The provinces also have names in African languages. They are often used in official government communication.

I dunno we just don't make much of a fuss over the name of provinces and nobody has suggested doing so. It would cost billions and take a lot of getting used to.

Well, some cities did get renamed recently.
East London got changed to Gqeberha.
Renaming entire provinces would cost a lot of money (which we don’t have right now)

Because Afrikaans and English are the third and fourth most spoken languages in the country...
