    This episode will make you feel "Jol-"-ly and "Braai-ght." We had a LOT of you guys the South African Geograpeeps involved in this episode, I'm so glad you gave your input. South African Katharine just so happened to be in town while we were filming and volunteered to co-host with me! She loves her country and loves talking about it. That's all I ask for in a guest-host. Hope you enjoy this episode. It is officially the longest one (for now as of March 2021) just beating Russia by 13 seconds. #SouthAfrica

      It's kinda funny. Dutch and Afrikaans are like, "Hey, we're different languages." And all the Scandinavian languages are like, "Yes, us too. We're not the same thing as each other." Meanwhile Mandarin and Cantonese are all, "You're just going to call us both 'Chinese,' aren't you?" Then Arabic walks into the room.

    Edit: I know South Africa isn’t as corrupt as certain countries but when I lived in the UK and told people I am South African, there was the common stereotypes like we have no water, has wild animals in your backyard etc . One of the main stereotypes is South Africa is corrupt and has no money. In this case from my personal experience, people keep calling South Africa corrupt and poor. These stereotypes may vary from where you live.

    Interesting fact I learned recently - J. R. Tolkien was born in South Africa in Bloemfontein.
    My husband and I wanted to watch something and then he said “maybe Geography Now - South Africa?”, and when I searched it I saw that this episode was out just 8h ago and my husband didn’t know about it. So funny! We both enjoyed it!

    It's kinda amazing and I like on how South Africa has an app where it alarms and warns you when the power is going to be out for a significant amount of time or hours. Unlike here in my country where the power just shuts off unexpectedly or randomly and the issue would be fixed but in an unexpected amount of time. I kinda like that South Africa.

    • @lopezlizimo1236
      @lopezlizimo1236 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Brother there is nothing amazing about South Africa giving us the load shedding schedules... It's like being thankful to your torturer for giving you water!
      We don't have just load-shedding, but a crumbling infrastructure, there power goes out at random times and takes days to repair at some times, even our water supply is unstable, they refuse to upgrade the asbestos pipes in my town.
      Every other day there is a burst water pipe which causes massive water flooding's and damages to our properties. Our substations are left open with absolutely no protection or locks so the poor go to sleep there, then they make fire to stay warm and boom. They also steal the batteries out of our cellphone towers so we lose signal for days in a row.
      Never be exited to visit South Africa, you'll be robbed within 30minutes of being here.

    • @elliotselekedi982
      @elliotselekedi982 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No it's not amazing, there are multiple apps which some don't work properly, the load shedding schedules are inaccurate mostly which defeats the purpose of the app. The electricity crises has been going on for a long time with no strategy being implemented to fix the issue, not to mention the skyrocketing unemployment rate, the wealth gap, increasing crime rate. So yeah South Africa may be praised on certain attributes, it is by no means a good country, not by a long shot. The country has great potential but the problem is the government and how they run this country.

    Fun fact: The crown Jewels are South African. The Cullinan Diamond was discovered in 1905 and was the largest diamond ever discovered. Since South Africa was a British colony at the time, we had to hand over our diamond and it was cut up and made into what we now know today as the crown jewels.

The diamond was unsold for 2 years and then bought by the Colony of Transvaal (a British dominion) and subsequently presented to King Edward VII, who had them cut by a cutting company in Amsterdam. None of the diamonds are currently used in publicly displayed crown jewellery, although many were used in older necklaces and one of them was used as the base for Queen Mary (wife of George V)'s crown.

      Check out Far Cry 2, as much as that is a fictional Central African nation a lot of the map is pretty much rural South Africa especially the populated areas not to mention the people there are speaking isiZulu, isiXhosa and Afrikaans which are all South African language.

      Zambia is one of the countries that i love as a south african. One day i was watching a Christian channel on tv, and they were interviewing a young lady in zambia by the name of Makoma. I was so surprised cos i could understand what she was saying. Since then, i truly believe i may have some relatives there.

    I am a history and geography buff myself...
    **Side note: Cape Malay also falls under the Coloured people group (They are also of mixed heritage)

    I bought the Album 'Scaterlings' with Johnny Clegg and Mchnu, known as Juluka in 1982. It was rarely off my turntable and I wore it out. I still have my replacement copy today.
