I've listened to this song over and over for my whole adult life, and yet it never gets old. I'm 70 now and I still hear something I hadn't previously noticed, each & every time.
Undoubtedly, a timeless masterpiece and definitely one of the best rock songs ever written and performed. 🏆👏💪
I graduated from high school in 1983. Stairway To Heaven was the theme of our senior prom that year. I might be old, but I got to see all the really cool bands live!!! Including Led Zeppelin!
My take is similar to yours Josh. For me this is about the pursuit of happiness. What they are saying is you can’t buy it and if you chase it, you won’t find happiness. But if you listen (to the whispering wind), if you are still (like a rock) and you find peace within yourself and the World around you (when all is one and one is all), you may find it. American author Nathaniel Hawthorne once wrote “Happiness is as a butterfly 🦋 which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp but if you sit down quietly, may alight upon you”. To me this is the essence of what the song is about.

You just listened to a masterpiece for both the ears and the heart and soul. A moving classic that will never be laid to rest. I cry every time. Such emotion and power in Robert Plant's voice. I get chills as the song begins to transition. It serenades and then it rocks you to heaven. A beautiful experience I'm glad to share with you Josh.✌🎶
Listening to this song for the first time is quite an experience. I'll give you a couple of intense ones: Since I've been Loving You, and In my Time of Dying. There's plenty more but make sure to keep those in your list. Stick to studio versions at least for first listens. Also... more ELO dude :)

I think it's about greed and the mistaken belief that money can buy anything and that you have a chance of changing your belief, but in the end she's like a rock that doesn't roll (unchanged).
Please listen to Since I've Been Loving You by them. Possibly the greatest blues rock song ever.

Try their song, "Dazed and Confused"
When the Levee Breaks and Since I've Been Loving You might be their best, but Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song (the live video is great), along with Kashmir would round out a good first survey of Zeppelin. Strongly concur with commenter below who urges studio versions; there's phenomenal live stuff on the dvd compilation and a few other recordings, but one of the joys of Zeppelin as they matured was the construction of the songs, the layering, the production.
A (possibly contentious) note on lyrics: Don't worry about the meaning of Stairway. You get everything you need from Plant's astounding delivery. The actual words are ad-hoc hippie/college poetry, nicely put together for the song, but nothing deeper than that. Of course many people read into them what they want, in that regard they're very good lyrics, but they are not one of life's great lessons. I feel this way about a great many-but by no means all- of Plant's words. His delivery sells the songs, but especially in the early days they were problematic on several levels: uncredited borrowing of words and the afore-mentioned hippie/Tolkein fare foremost among them.

Money can't buy happiness, and 16th Century INDULGENCES did not BUY their deceased loved ones into heaven. There is only ONE way. Robert Plant has always maintained the opening lyrics just came to him, he doesn't know WHAT they mean. The rest of the lyric that he did 'work on' is typical Love & Peace sentiment to 'fit the music' with a curious mention that the 'Stairway' that she bought was worthless... You can't BUY your way into heaven. Just MY interpretation. Peace.
Gee your last song was Yes, Close to the Edge (I left a post there about Yes) now Led Zeppelin! Some of my all time favorite bands so I have subscribed. This song is on Led Zeppelin 4 a rock and roll masterpiece. On volume 4 try Black Dog, Rock and Roll, The Battle of Evermore, When the Levee Breaks. On Volume 2 try; Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, Living Loving Maid. Led Zeppelin are one of the three founders of heavy rock. The other two are Deep Purple and Back Sabbath. So if you like heavy rock here is an intro for Deep Purple. Try these songs Burn from the Burn Album, From Machine Head, Highway star, Smoke on the Water, Lazy and Space Truckin' then from Deep Purpule in Rock try Child in Time, Black night and Flight of the Rat. I hope you really enjoy the ride through these great songs, we did!

you mentioned "pan flute" and you're almost correct...it's a synthesizer programmed(or whatever they do) to make it sound like a flute/recorder, etc. Excellent reaction.

Live, I think it was a synth/keyboard. But the studio version was played on a recorder, multiple tracks.
This song has been number one, or at least top three lists for about 50 years now. The live of this & many of their songs are even better, solos are longer & Plant adds extra lyrics. That’s why the each are the GOATS, & together the GODS of music.

Be forewarned though, because it’s about Lady Somerset Belenoff, just by listening to this song can possibly put you in grave danger?

I first heard it as a teenager when it came out in '73 I think, but yeah.....there was a lot of excitement about this album with friends, especially older ones. Every house party from then on had this album spinning at one time or another...........legendary moments.
One of the best bands to come out of the UK.
Occasionally they step outside their normal pattern. Try D'yer Maker.
Do: In My Time of Dying by Zeppelin, live or studio, but live is well worth watching.
Just so you know at one time Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin were going to join Alan White and Chris Squire of Yes were going to join together to form a group called XYZ (cross Yes Zeppelin). It was shortly after Yes had broken up and John Bonham of LZ had died. Plant left the merger early but Jimmy Page hung around and there was a group of demos to come out of those sessions. I have them and I believe you can still find them on TH-cam. They never formed the group but the demos live on. Yes eventually re-formed and the remaining members of Zeppelin very occasionally got together to perform the one off concert once in a blue moon.

All of their first 7 studio albums are masterpieces (or, at a minimum, each album has at least one masterpiece on it).
Check out every song on their first album -- it is essentially a "live" album done in the studio and has a rawness and energy to it that they never quite recaptured (though they surpassed it in many ways).
Now you need to listen to Black Sabbath's Heaven + Hell.
You should check them out live At MSG in 73. Its a movie they did and to me it shows them at there best. You will notice the do alot of improv on stage songs can go twice as long You need to see this one live and Since I been Loving You and the Rain Song you wont be sorry. They own the stage like few others can
