I know this is a super late reply, but both Grossman and Muenzner left Necro because Suicmez wouldn't allow them any creative freedom... and as you can see with Obscura, they've got freedom to do their own stuff.
@deargodlifeishell No Idea why he left but Christian Müenzner also left and joind Obscura... which are 2 of 3 people to ever be on a Necro record, to this point. there very diffrent bands with a diffrent direction
@behindthen0thing I'm pretty sure he is not touching the hi-hat pedal and left kick pedal at the same time :) . He uses a different double bass pattern than normal drummers, he does 2 right and one left...this frees up his left leg. I'm pretty sure he leads with his left too.
@jgejerrit he turns his foot to cover both pedals as he does that part, making the hi hat close on the offbeat 16ths. good groove element. i personally like how he does the double bounce roll at 2:44. really shows that he knows proper technique. :)
@Philsberry85 yeah muhammed wrote everything (rhythm, lead, bass, drums and lyrics) for both albums and most likely the up and coming album. im pretty sure muhammed is a control freak. i like both band but necro seems more robotic while obscura has a more natural flow to their songs while having the same technique as necro.
The only problem with Obscura live, is that the bass needs to be really clear and audible, so the sound engineers put it higher than everything and it kinda takes the edge off Hannes' drumming, but his cymbals always sound sick!
ok but that didnt contradicted anything about what I said, hannes become an top drummer and he used that skill and awesome creativity in obscura, that is why it is a pleasure to hear it in there too
From 55 seconds to about.. 1 min 22, is he doing 16ths with the right foot and 8ths with the left? If so, madness. Or is he straddling both the hi hat and kick pedal with his left foot?
@deargodlifeishell I think Necro is definitely more complex, except for the bass in which case Jeroen kills it. But I find that Obscura flows a lot more than Necro, they sound a lot more musical.
anyone know what he left necrophagist? Ive listened to Obscura a couple times and just think the only thing Obscura has on Necro is a better recording sound, but musically Necro kills it
@leothedrawer3 lol not even. it goes right down the collective song writing. Muhammed slays most guitarists out there and he opened the door for Grossmann to be a very musical and creative drummer, which is hard to find in death metal anymore.
@deargodlifeishell I believe I read that he didn't have any input in Necrophagist. He had to play all the pre-written drum parts exactly and could never bring his own ideas to the table.

It's amazing how uneducated people are about necrophagist, especially with respect to Christian Muenzner, who wrote half the solos. Who do you think is the lead player in Obscura? Suicmez can sweep and play fast runs, over and over. You don't know shit if you think he was ever better than Christian. All the cool tapping riffs are his on necrophagist, including the one on the title track, then he took it to a completely new level with Obscura. Doing fuckin major 7 sweeps in death metal, and developing his unique two handed technique. Nothing necrophagist has done compares in terms of the writing, theory, and uniqueness, not even Christian's own material then. It was fast, in perfect time, and sounded cool for the solos. In terms of the songs themselves, they weren't great death metal. Christian also suffered from focal dystonia while in Obscura, and still played everything on Omnivium, not to mention Spawn of Possession, his two solo albums, terrestrial exiled, a Gorod solo, a Loathing Requiem solo, and the list goes on. He also went to Munich Guitar Institute, and is a teacher/player almost if not full time. What has Suicmez done? Wrote epitaph, but only half the solos on epitaph, and the first album. That's it.
Christian persued music. Suicmez pursued a career in engineering and wrote a thesis for his university I think. both amazing musicians, a lotta bands have that guitar wizard and muenzer was the one for necrophagist for sure.
one of the most well versed metal drummers as far as speed, power, precision, groove, and creativity. Hands down one of my favorite!
Hannes is awesome..its a real pleassure to watch him play those songs with all the little improvisations here and there!!
