So for awhile now the JBL Boombox has been a fan favorite for a lot of people looking for a large portable bluetooth speaker. But now, ultimate ears has put out a very formidable contender… their new UE Hyperboom. Now just keep in mind that the new JBL Boombox 2 is set to be released in the next few months… but for now lets see how the new Hyperboom stacks up the original JBL Boombox.

it surprises me that I've seen more than one reviewer talk about the Hyperboom not changing it's performance between battery power and AC as a negative. The fact it gives it's best performance even when on battery, to me, is a testament to good design and not a negative. If other products were better designed they would also perform at their best regardless of battery or AC. I don't look at the Boombox as having an increase in performance when on AC as a feature. I see it has having a DECREASE in performance when it is on battery power and that is something that needs to be improved.
So much agreed in 2020 if the bluetooth speaker would have to survive over the newer wifi and assistant based speakers the manufactors needs to up their game in my opinion with this category.
EXACTLY! I wish he would have let us hear the jbl when it's plugged in so we can see if it actually sounds better with the plug than the hyperboom.
Dave Tomlinson fact is UE have better engineers/designers as well as quality control. I own the JBL Xtreme and it died just after 1 year of use. I have 2 UE Megabooms that are over 4 years old and still going strong, albeit with reduced battery life but still good enough to get through the day.
And as you mentioned, UE’s speakers performance is consistent whether they’re plugged in or not. The Xtreme was not as loud when not plugged in.

@@lauchlanstill6677 so you don't know about Jbl Arena, for Cars, all their HIFI products and Partybox. Beats is only trash, don't even compare. It sounds like 30€ JBL headphone and worst than a 40€ Akg or Superlux headphone. JBL is like Marshall and other serious companies.

I just purchased the Hyper boom yesterday and I love it granted I paid $450 after taxes but still worth it. No buyers remorse in doing so. I’m really considering buying another one so I can pair them up. I currently have 2 echo studios paired with my Amazon cube. But I find it a pain at times when I play my music. The issue at times is the delay when I’m skipping tracks and the echoe studios have to be setup with Wi-Fi. And the sound is great and you can adjust the eq from the Alexa app. But I prefer the hyper boom as you connect it thru Bluetooth from your phone and when you change your songs it’s immediately plays the next song without any delay. I’m gonna try to connect my hyper boom to my fire cube through Bluetooth and see how it works.
I paid 450 too. Got tired of waiting for a sale. Brilliant clear open sound. Makes my JBL extreme 2 sound rather average.
Well I already own two Boom 2's and two megaboom 3's so you know my preference, while it doesn't really matter as much for a speaker like this I do wish the Hyperboom was ipx7. Based on other reviews and hands on, I gotta say the sound description he gives isn't entirely accurate, the Hyperboom has a much more neutral sound than than the Boombox with more dynamics and a wider soundstage, and the Boombox gives way more power to the low end than it's mids and highs giving a louder bass presence than the higher frequencies. So what I just said makes it sound like the JBL has more bass than the Hyperboom, except it doesn't. The Hyperboom gets louder and has more bass than the Boombox, and the bass doesn't consume the rest of the mids and highs like the Boombox does making it more balanced and better sounding in my opinion, especially if you listen to many different genres. However I would be on the lookout for the Boombox two, as they will probably fix these problems. But I have a team of UE speakers that I initially chose over JBL years ago because of their combination on 360 sound, there balance of sound, and durability. While this speaker doesn't have the same durability and 360 sound as the smaller models, it certainly isn't required considering I already have other speakers better suited for events where more durability is required, and this speaker adds enough with it's big sound, and certainly will bring everything your smaller speaker's are missing to the party.
I don't like the lack of clarity that the UE Boom 2 has, having only 2 larger woofers and no tweeters. It also is not more "neutral", it literally has a flatter sound, with boosted midbass 120-160Hz, with a drop off around 80Hz and a drop off in highs around 12Khz. I prefer bigger low bass that I can tame, over low bass that isn't there.
This Hyperboom however, sounds very appealing to me, it is a significant improvement in SQ over the previous UE speakers, regardless of size..

What's the app on the iPad when doing the sound tests? I'm really considering buying the UE Hyperboom. Ultimate Ears knows what they're doing when it comes to portable audio. Since the second generation Boom and Megaboom, they're goal was to always provide the best portable audio. I have 2 Megaboom 3s.
I’m nervous about buying a JBL Boombox because I’ve read about a possible buzzing noise when the battery goes below 50%. I’ve seen TH-cam videos confirming this problem. Does the Boombox 2 suffer from the same flaw? I was considering the original Boombox to save some money, but if it has a buzzing sound at low volume when the battery is below 50%, it’s a deal breaker. Considering the hyper boom as well. Any advice? Thanks. I love your videos and how articulate they are. Keep up the great work.
Do yourself a favor and buy the UE Hyper Boom you won’t regret it. I bought one myself and I love it!!!
I prefer the boombox not because it sounds better witch it doesn't but the UE looks like a bookshelf speaker that's made to be in doors and it's rubber handle is a no go for me too flimsy the JBL boombox looks better and carrying handle makes me wanna just take mine around outside because it looks better gets and gets loud enough for me and the handle is firm and easier to grip but UE DEFINITELY did good with the hyper butter stick speaker
tbh i like the design of it! it also looks like the new Xbox ahah ! and the carrying handle looks more comfortable on the boombox of course due to the form factor! im really impressed by what ue did , i will consider buying it maybe , ill wait until boombox 2 comes out and go test them irl to see what they both have to offer!

@@687donny I think the sound difference between them is not a big deal, as you said the form factor is more important. For me Hyperboom is better since I need to have it on a smaller surface and I need to be able to keep my phone on top of it. I've really been waiting for a speaker that matches all of my needs and finally this is it. It's great that there are different form factors for different people, for me the cube is a winner.

UE is the better speaker, no doubt, but I prefer the boombox because it's fully waterproof which is a must for me(pool lover here), also it's easier to carry around. And last but not least, the price. I bought it for 190£ and the hyperboom cost 300£+ so yeah, I made my choice 👌

Just wanna say that anyone who buys any speaker based on ip rating and not sound is a complete jackass! Up until 5 years ago no speaker could even get wet,much less be fully submerged. So tired of everyone bitching about ip67 vs ip4 etc.....So I should by a shitty sounding speaker cause I can drop it in the pool where I can't hear it properly anyway or at all because it might lose connectivity in the water!🤦🏾♂️

I have both party box 100 & 300. It’s worth buying, but there not water resistant. But overall has a ton of bass. Good for parties.

Love your reviews, man! Please help me sort out couple of these confusions. So, I'm pretty much into debate, amongst these speakers, Boombox 2 and Hyperboom. Definitely I'm looking for a clear, crispy and most natural sound but then the bass at lower frequencies shouldn't be compensated. Which one do you think can deliver better my needs? let's not bring their prices to the decision! Secondly, it seems here in India, the Hyperboom has gone out of stock, and can't expect it to arrive back, im anytime within 3 months. So, if I go with Boombox 2(owing to its availability better ) , does that seemscompensating with the sound quality in any manner? Or should I be biased enough to hold on, until the thing arrives back? Third, does the Boombox 2 really does drop the vocals and that sound signature, around higher volumes, say 80 percent? And lastly, if I were to listen, around 50 percent volume, which one would you suggest to vibe out? Do, you think if I won't make it to Hyperboom, there'd be lot regret about?
I bought the hyper boom and I’d recommend you the do same. The hyper boom has a 5-6 band Eq that you can adjust to your liking and it has a few EQ that you can choose from. The hyper boom as all the bass that you want, and you can lower the bass if need be. The fact that the hyper boom sounds the same on battery or plugged in is the best selling point than the jbl. Your gonna want that same sound when you show your friends and it won’t be there unless you plug it in. That’s my thought.
Nice review/comparison but you need to invest in microphones that are similar to or better than the ones in Jim’s Reviews. I’m wearing earphones and you could hear the richness of the bass in his reviews. In yours it’s just not there because of the microphone you’re using.

If you hold down the Bluetooth and volume up button on the JBL it increases the volume even more. I think might be louder than Hyperboom if you do that

The Hyperboom sounds way way way better, from bass, to mids, to high notes. Sounds so much more impactful too, like comin from a larger cabinet. The 90 degree firing woofers and tweeters are perfect for sound dispersion. The Boombox (and especially the Extreme 2) sounds thin in comparison. I also like the fact that the bass of the Hyperboom can be easily increased via speaker placement and an EQ. I love the Boombox, but its showing its age. The Boombox 2 has a lot to fill. I really hope the Boombox 2 is not just a refined version of the original one, it needs to be a hooligan and polished gentleman when it needs to. Hope the Boombox 2 has a power increase overall and not cut off when on battery. Im gonna wait for the Boombox 2 before deciding what to buy. IMO, the Hyperboom / Boombox is in its own category and its hard to find other speakers that fit in this category. The Go Play maybe.....

JBL Partybox 100 @ $379.00 vs $400.00 for the UE Hyperboom, the UE Hyperboom is an after thought, plus there are 2 orientations with the Partybox 100, verticle or horizontal, UE has only verticle. Portability maybe an issue for some. I've lugged too many Bass cabinets around so a little speaker like the JBL Partybox 100 is nothing to consider for me.
The JBL Boombox and Boombox 2 are built for ease of transport so your paying for a design difference. JBL is a speaker company and has been for years, there's are reason for that.
JBL gives more options at different price points than UE.
I'm glad UE is pushing the envelope because competition drives these companies to compete for our dollars.
In the end we're the ones who win!

from this video I honestly think the hyperboom sounds a lot better than the jbl. It sounds a lot more full whereas the jbl sounds a bit more narrow......where the higher and mid sounds are given more importance. The hyperboom sounds more balanced than the jbl. it looks really nice and the fact that its just as loud and nice sounded when on battery compared to it being on battery is awesome. i'm a fairly big jbl fan and tend to lean towards them most of the time but the hyperboom really took the cake for me on this one. hope the jbl 2 is better.
On a side note, 400$ for the jbls speakers which are about 3-4 years old is too damn much.
I would take the hyperboom even if the boombox 2 cames out because i think the new boombox will be around 450 or even more and hxperboom is 400

The JBL sounds great all round. That UE is just a bass box. Off course the bass is bigger, it's a huge enclosure. Sounds like a blanket has been thrown over it.

The only time I use the eq setting is when playing a podcast or something u want to lessen the bass trying to use the eq to get "more" bass simply dosent work and really isnt needed

Side firing passives are harder to enhance bass in a corner and honestly, there are not many people that have 2 walls close by. The Hyperboom's 90 degree angled passives are meant to do that anywhere in the corner. The Boombox is getting old, the Boombox 2 has a lot of catching up to do.

Nearly any speaker is goin to get a bass boost when placed in a corner of the room or on the floor, my point is that back-firing passive radiators by far enhances bass when placed in a corner, not side firing passive radiators like the Boombox. Off topic, the Hyperboom has 90w and has larger woofers and radiators, its not a wonder how it sounded better than the Boombox. I really hope the Boombox 2 has larger drivers and higher power.

Don't know.... in my opinion Hyperboom Is too boosted which Is too much in my opinion. And the form factor is better for jbl boombox. Easier to carry around and looks more interesting. So for me the winner is boombox.
Put the boombox on AC Mode and the Hyperboom will have a Challenge in terms of loudness 👍🙂
