    This longer version is the only way to watch the movie, the scenes have a natural flow and are allowed to play out. The theatrical version's breakneck speed and abrupt cuts don't give context to a lot of things happening making it very hard to follow. Its actually kind of funny to watch the theatrical version with the average popcorn munching movie goer in mind.

    • @dancnkc
      @dancnkc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True, this intro would have helped people understand the movie much better, however there is a strong counter argument. 1. This intro would have made the first half of the movie too long for the average movie-goer who came expecting to see an action film. 2. Virginia Madsen (no explanation necessary).

    • @gooseabuse
      @gooseabuse 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dancnkc I think the intro is actually less important than how the rest of the movie is cut. For instance the theatrical version you get a few seconds with Piter then he's drooling all over jessica. I've read the book and even I am thinking "who the hell is this little imp and WTF is going on!?!"

  • @jamesdenofantiquity
    @jamesdenofantiquity 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    As a research historian and now also as a history teacher this intro makes it feel like a real world, a world with a past and excellently contextualizes what is to take place. I saw this intro way back in the 80s on cable, HBO I think, it came in through the snow if you know what I mean, and I always loved it. The one with the Princess always seemed rushed, tacked on, and frankly trying to appeal to some other head than the thinking one.

    • @kiemer4531
      @kiemer4531 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That opening only makes sense if you have read the books and know that Irulan became a historian. So basically the newbie is left wondering who she is and why she is narrating. Taking them out of the story before it has even started.

    • @jamesdenofantiquity
      @jamesdenofantiquity 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiemer4531 I'm speaking of the long prologue that was added to the "special edition"re-release that was added. I am aware of the original opening with the Princess but I always found that inadequate and unimpressive.

    I read almost all Dune novels including the many, many prequels. In fact I just finished ''Navigators of Dune'' , taking place about a century after the Butlerian Jihad. It deals more or less with how the Spacing Guild came into existence.

    • @andersonarmstrong2650
      @andersonarmstrong2650 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      An atrocious and needless addition. All Frank Herbert's son's additions lacked the multifaceted multidimensional quality of the original series. Frank was a cribber extraordinaire:Poonji rice (Caladan's main export) is actually a Myanmar variety. The Mahdi was a 19th century African jihadist scoring spectacular victories against the British Empire;The Sardaukar were clearly SS troop derivatives with their predominantly blonde elites;The Atreides modelled on French Foreign Legionnaires. The Fremen took the nomadic desert strictures governing Bedouin culture, applied Berber blue eyes yet gave them a naivete associated with British Empire African troops in WW2:unheard of resourcefulness, casually dismissive of encounters with hitherto invincible enemy formations...Layered over this is the feudalism of the Houses major/minor balance,with the corporatism emerging in the 19th century East India Company=Choam,and Cunard=Spacing Guild..The Samurai sword fighting benchmark forced by shields repelling projectile weaponry added edge to an anti-tech future where the real transformations impacted off-planet and in micro engineering,eg stillsuits,hunter-seekers&Bene Tleilax genetic liberties clearly reflecting anti Chinese/Japanese fears.
      The Americans are represented in the references to the Ixians,Germany=Richesse.
      Dune enabled the author to project an ecological necessity threshold where the rigours of the planet nullified technology. Satellites avoided due to secret spice bribery;shields attracting sandworms;lasguns/shield interactions causing nuclear fission explosions. The film needlessly messes up most of this.The Gom Jabbar scene probably an exception except the boy Paul is ridiculously too old.A sean Connery kind of masculinity would have cemented Duke Leto's stature instead of the almost school teacher figure the Fremen grew to respect.
      Hopefully the remake will learn from these and many other mistakes.

    I was at the Dune movie (first run) in 1984. They handed out a sheet to “explain” all of this. This intro is so much better and should have been used. In all fairness, Dune is a complex book, and has too many plots, sub plots, twists, and subtitles (thanks Mr. Herbert) to make a 2 hours movie make sense no matter how much you try.

    • @georgemulford2910
      @georgemulford2910 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you see the new one? Just wondered if they handled it any better? I still think its too complex for a film or two. A series like Game of Thrones or House of Cards would be great.

    • @buildwalls2001
      @buildwalls2001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@georgemulford2910 - Yes I did see the new one.
      "Did the movie makers do a better job at explaining the Dune book?". Yes, and no. I won't post any spoilers but the story was communicated a bit better since there are 2 new movies (each about 2.5 hours) so the total movie time may be 5 hours. Maybe more time to go into depth.
      I do not feel Mentats, and Suk Doctors weren't explained much at all. The viewers had to make some assumptions.
      The special effects were fantastic so many visual aspects of Dune were up front center (so to speak).
      Bonus: No heart plugs, or weirding modules (opps, is that a spoiler, SORRY!!!).
      Nitpicks
      1. Never use a laser near a shield
      2. We learned to say Harkonnen again (back to 1984).
      If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. I saw this in the theater (1st live movie since Feb 2020). Maybe wait for in home streaming or purchase option?
      Let me know what you think!

    I will never watch this version. I wasn't even here to watch the video. David Lynch's Dune is not a bad movie, but rather a film with flaws and a perfect example of just how unfinished and still a masterpiece in it's own right. David Lynch's vision and directing style is ahead of it's time. When they released this extended TV version, it was not even his work. They had somebody else reconstruct it and saw clips of it and thought it was pitiful. Dune has gotten lots of crap over the gears, but it tried. I resoect David Lynch's vision of Dune now and even more. If only they had let him finish it and had more faith in him. Even he was not happy with the final product.

I'm thinking they are subcontractors because they are already extracting spice as soon as the Duke arrives on Arrakis. I suggest that the Atreides family is acting more in a general contractor role. This makes sense to me. I think the scenario plays out something like this: the Harkonens lose their contact, the mining subcontractors give the Choam corporation notice that they will stop production until they see some money. So a settlement is reached between the subcontractors, the harkonen's bonding company, and the Choam corporation picking up whatever debt is left outstanding while Atreides recompensates the Choam corporation once the Atreides family inspects facilities on Arrakis and finds them acceptable. Thusly, production continues uninterrupted through the transition.

They have done the first book four times now, it is time to move forward in the stories! And I want to know what happened to Varion Atreides, after he left for deep space! I don't have anything against this long prologue - my only objection would be that Freddie Jones and not Virginia Madsen is speaking it. In the first three books, many of the chapters are preceded by what are purported to be excerpts from historical books and Irulan wrote - Irulan is practically the narrator of the story at least in its beginnings, or she provides a critical voice about Paul as a ruler that is confirmed by the story we are told.

  • @hypnogems7680

    I always hated this opening compared to the one with Princess Irulan presenting the prologue.
    There were more than two schools still in existence also.
    The Mentat training school, the Face Dancer training school, and the Ginaz school of Swordmastery still existed; else Scytale (Face Dancer conspiritor against Paul Maud'ib), Piter De Vries (Twisted Mentat of the Harkonens), Duncan Idaho (Ginaz Swordmaster), and Thuffir Hawat (Atreides Family Mentat and Master of Assassins), could not have existed.
    Nor would Paul Maud'ib himself, have been able to be subject of the secretive and aimed at the unconscious mind initial stages of Mentat training in his own right; or been able to continue the conscious Mentat training at his own choice on being made aware of the prior.

    No Jess, your not. This is by far the better of the two. Not to take anything away from Virginia Madsen, who is an excellent actress, but the original narration voice work was the better of the two. His voice was full of the depth of an ageless sage who is outside of the tale.
    Frank Berst who posted on this comments page, stated that this narration was done by Frank Herbert, the author of DUNE. I do not mean to contradict him but I would like to see a citation on this as I believe it was performed by a different person. I believe it was done by American actor William Phipps', who passed away just this past June at the ripe old age of 96.
    This actor may not be well known by name. He had a supporting role in the"The War of the Worlds" (1953). In that movie he was one of the three towns people left as a fire watch at the crater site. Phipps was the actor who said "...Welcome to California", and the character of Leroy in the movie "Crossfire" (1947). I have no citation for this, but I do have a good memory and a facility for recognizing faces, voices, and tonal qualities. I found nothing so far in my search for evidence on this matter. However, on several of these sites, which listed cast members, referred to the narrator as uncredited.

But then let's face it, viscount Hundro Moritani is a real piece of s***, because not only did he do that, he also carpet bombed the Ecazi Palace and its surrounding peninsula, physically destroying the mahogany throne, and then he killed two of archduke Armand's young relatives.
