- Demoing the JOYO American Sound Amp Simulator I recently bought for a very affordable price.
This pedal actually sounds pretty nice, especially considering the price!
If you are interested in this pedal, please consider buying the Thomann branded version through my affiliate link:

So, I’ve just purchased the pedal literally 20 minutes before finding this video. I wish I’d seen this video beforehand, because I would have bought the pedal 30 minutes ago. Easily the best demo of this pedal, the versatility of its tones and capabilities. This is the first to really show the Tweed sound from any other ones I’ve watched. Brilliant.
Thank you very much! It could have saved you 10 minutes at least haha. Hope you enjoy playing it, I still do. I have recently done the mod to bypass the built in cab sim, and now use it with a separate cab loader to get even more options. Such a fun pedal for so little money.
Hola!! Realmente se asemeja a un tweed deluxe, vale la pena??
Me gusta el catalinbread F55 pero su valor es mucho mayor...
Saludos!!
@@RudyBressers Hi.. great review. I purchased it used just yesterday and waiting for the shipment of the seller. May I ask two questions? is it good to gig for a pedalboard ampless un a band with funk music?
where I can find the mod tutorial for the exclusion of the internal cab simulation?
thank you so much.
regards.
@@ace-rob71 Thanks! I think you absolutely can use it as a pedal board amp. Maybe add a compressor somewhere in the chain, that's always good for playing funk music.
There is no video I believe for the mod, just one or two pictures floating on the interwebs. But its only a couple of steps, so ease enough if you're comfortable with soldering.
hey @@RudyBressers thats awesome! Could you tell me how you did that mod? Or the source of the info. Thanks.
Best and most thorough demo that I've seen of this pedal.
Thanks for doing all the leg work for us.
@@bobmoire5676 thanks for the nice comment, I appreciate it!
Man, I knew it! This pedal (and all of us here) needed you to post this review. Finally, a great guitarist using it on TH-cam. Thank you very much, sir.
Thank you for the compliment! Very much appreciated :)
Great playing and great demonstration of the pedal, thanks a lot.
for jazz enthusianists like me its heaven, althou its a preamp (too) its sooo warm with solid state amps, , its a wonderful ped
Definitely! It's incredible such an affordable device can sound so good
After watching this video, I got 100% confidence to bought this pedal last year. Now I'm so happy using it with minimalist pedalboard setup. Thank you! 😊
Thanks, that's great to hear 😀. Happy that you like the pedal and are using it on your board!
Best review I’ve found. Great playing, and playing “into” what the pedal was giving back. You sold me. 👍🏻
Thanks Jordan, I appreciate the comment!
Im Watching This Even Though I Have Joyo American Already😁 If you are interested into Quality Clean And Slightly Break Up Clean. This is For you❤️
Exactly the demo I was looking for. Great cleans, very Knopfler-esque. Waiting for mine, I can't wait! Thanks, cheers!
Thank you for the comment, glad I could help! Enjoy playing the Joyo American Sound 😀
Very good demo especially concerning the dynamics of the pedal. Your playing is extremely expressive and refine picking soft, mild or harder. Very tender touch. Thanks.
Thanks, I really appreciate the comment!
Best review of TH-cam. Great job!
Thank you very much Lucas, I appreciate it!
I bought an American Sound a few days ago and I'm commenting the videos that helped me to decide. Because it rocks!
It's drive departmant is capable of even heavy tones. That was the most surprising side of it for me. I wasn't expecting it. Even when you record directly it's enough for heavy riffs and leads. (Of course adding delay or reverb in your DAW will make it sounding even better)
Voice knob works like a saturation or soft overdrive. So it allows you to achieve AC/DC type of sound. And drive channel sounds like a heavy overdrive / distortion. So it's like having an amp simulation, soft clipping overdrive and distortion in the same pocket.
I really recommend it.
Glad to hear you're happy with your purchase! It's a very good and versatile amp-in-a-box for an extremely affordable price.
The drive tones can get very thick indeed, you don't need an additional overdrive pedal just to get to a heavy overdriven sound. And luckily the clean tones are very nice too.
Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. And have fun using the American Sound! :)
It helps me a lot. Thanks for the review! More power to you
Glad I could help, thanks for the comment!
This seems perfect for me. I’ve played through tweeds and blackface amps for years but it’s handy to grab something like a Blues Jr or other little amp for jams or small rooms and it’d be great to get something closer to my normal tone from my bigger rig out of it
I absolutely agree. It's an easy way to get a good (and familiar) tone and this way you won't have to lug around a large & heavy amp. Especially for rehearsals that's a big plus :).
Thanks, Rudy. Great demo. I can see this replacing my amp at times in my studio and live. Also would be great to just have it along as an amp backup. I'm sold. Lol
Thanks! Yeah for this little money it's always handy to have around. Can't really go wrong with it.
Amazing demo! I'll use it as a reference for my settings... Thanks!
Thanks! :)
LOVE your playing!!. Great demo..Thanks!
Thanks a lot, I appreciate the comment! :)
Pretty convincing clean tones! I ordered one to use as preamp connected to single channel tube combo power amp input.
Nice! I'm sure it will work well as a preamp too.
I have an analog power amp on my board that pushes 50 watts into a 10” eminence patriot. I’m thinking of getting this as my “preamp” as the analog circuitry of my power amp is made to “pass through” all signal.
This American pedal does that classic fender sounds perfectly.
It works really well as a preamp, especially with a 12" whizzer cone "full range" PA speaker in a semi open guitar cab.
Amazin sounds, just bought 2 pedals for stereo setup
Cool! Even better in stereo :D
I'm a bassist, but I do a lot of demos and home recording. I got this to go with my Orange Bax Bangeetar. This little pedal gave me the cleans I was looking for. Can't get a better deal than that
Absolutely, it's amazing that this super affordable pedal can give you such nice clean sounds.. it's a great deal!
I have a Bass and saw a guy reset it for Bass and it's great for bass as you don't have a bass head ripping the twelves on a Guitar cab it seems tweaked just right for a Bassman approximation.
I just lay really mild compression before it and use my Catalin Bread Belle Epoch Deluxe Delay on 80 milliseconds about 10% wet between those it is an amazing Bass sound I've heard engineers do way worse spending ages tweaking.
I can also get that 70's slapback David Essex Rock on with the Catalan bread.
Superb playing and great demo 👍🏼
Thank you very much Andrew!
This with a silver horse, pure bliss
Nice sound, like your playing
Thanks!
Really nice demo. Pete Townshend-like dynamics.
Thanks a lot! :)
Nice tweaking on this monster
Thanks!
great review
Thank you! :)
Nice demo!
Thank you :)
Sounds great. How does it react to picking attack. Does it clean up and break depending how hard you hit it? And dues the volume knob clean up up the dirty sounds when you turn it down? Thanks
It does react pretty well to picking, the tone can clean up nicely when you pick a little softer. Feels organic. And indeed also when you dial back the volume on the guitar.
Terrific demo. I'm curious, how would you set it with an OD? I've had it for years and love the amp tones by themselves, but I had worse luck with other (dirt) pedals.
Thanks! I would probably keep the JoYo pretty clean / low gain. And then use the overdrive in front of the Joyo. Maybe add a booster too before the JoYo if you want to drive it more. I have two pretty affordable drive pedals, I haven't tried 'em yet with the Joyo, but definitely will now... just to see how they will sound :).
@@RudyBressers please make a video with the drive pedals and the Joyo. The audio quality of your setup gives a transparent representation of the gear!
@@sandrosadhukhan Thanks for the compliment Sandro!
thx for this review. Do you think the pedal is as effective in front of a normal amp? Or is it better suited in an effects-loop to avoid the pre-amp eq?
There are people who use it in front of an amp (but I am not one of them). I think it's going to be a matter of personal preference. Both options are definitely possible!
@@RudyBressers So you have it between the guitar and the Audio interface? that's all (plus a bit valahalla ;-) ?
@@deadcatforcutie9349 In this video I did. With a bit of compression too if I remember correctly :). But these days I use it with an IR loader after it (I have bypassed the built in cab sim).
7:14 even sounds like an amp making air in the room move, like classic rock or Neil Young on the Dead Man soundtrack.
It really is a fantastic little amp. Still on my pedalboard today.
Hey Rudy! Fantastic sound and pkaying! If i was to plug direct into desk/pa with this would i need a specific cable or would a standard inst cable do the trick?
Hi! Thanks 🙏. Usually you would plug into a DI box. Especially when it's a longer cable run to the desk (front of house).
But at home you could just plug straight into a mixer, no problem.
Ah ok so end of pedal chain into a DI box, then standard male to female XLR into a channel on the desk?
@@samchristmas1667 That's what I would do, yep
i used as an EQ and boost after my drives
If you don't mind paying a bit more, check out the Sonic Blue Twanger. I really like mine... however it does have a very assertively warm scooped sound
Thanks for the tip! Didn't know that one, checked out a video just now and it sounds pretty good :).
Nice content! Have you tried turning the drive all the way down? Did it give like a really clean sound?
Thanks! Turning the gain all the way down basically kills the volume (even with the volume all the way up).
But if you keep the gain very low (around 1), and the volume up, then you get a very nice and clean tone. Pretty much 100% clean I would say 👍
@@RudyBressers great! Thanks man!
Thank you for this :)
In small venues that don't have amps, can I use this pedal and plug it straight to the PA? Thanks again :)
You're welcome! And yes, you can do that :)
@@RudyBressers Thank you :)
Think I'll get it then!
@@Shalini_Jay_Music Nice, I hope you have fun with it!
Hello, thank you for your demo. I use this with a frfr 108 speaker and works well. Do you suggest I add a reverb pedal after this or before?
Hi! You could just add the reverb before the American Sound. Normally, if you use an amp without an effects loop and you want to connect a reverb pedal, you would also do it like that.
@@RudyBressers Thank you!
Can you go directly into mixer and PA with this or do you need an actual AMP/preamp?
You can indeed, you don't need an additional amp.
Good video, by the way I want to add it to my pedalboard, where should I put it? I have in this order: equalizer, compressor, overdrive, dist, noise Gate, chorus, tremolo, flanger, and delay. Where should I put it? Thanks
Thanks! Personally I would put it at the end of the chain if you don't plan on going into an amp. If you are playing through an amp I would place the Joyo more to the front of the chain (after the drives and before the noise gate).
@@RudyBressers thanks really healpful
@@xavixavi4959 You're welcome! :)
Awesome video man! just wanted to ask, where do i put this in my effects chain? i currently have guitar signal>distortion>chorus>delay>reverb>amp
Thanks! Depends on how you want to use it. As an amp you would use it instead of your current amp.
An an overdrive/preamp pedal probably at the very start of your chain.
@@RudyBressers so as an amp i put it at the very end?
@@fachryhakiki Yes indeed, instead of the amp you're using now.
@@RudyBressers alright thanks man!
I want to use it to connect to my church sound table. Do I still need anything else like a direct box?
Hi! Depends a little on the setup there. Would you have a very long cable run going to the mixer? In that case a DI pedal could still be useful. With shorter distances you can plug the JoYo directly into the mixer, no problem.
i use it as my Direct box . by Pinstripe pedals they have stereo & mono check them out. you wont be disappointed !
It is very dynamically sensitive and easy to use. I had the AC Tone also I think it’s somewhere in my car 🤔
I ran a Walrus EB-10 into the American sound and it reacted like an amp, tube sag and such, sounded great. Joyo stuff seems durable/reliable, but what do I know
But can it chug?
dos it mean that any OD pedal can be used as an "amp simulator" correct?
That depends on what you mean by 'amp simulator'. You could say that basically any overdrive can be used as a preamp (sort of).
But an overdrive doesn't have a cab sim built in, so on it's own (without an actual cabinet) it's not gonna sound good.
really good reverb what are you using
That's Valhalla Vintage Verb, a great sounding plugin. Versatile too, and quite affordable.
Pls do a video of Joyo American Sound with Joyo King of Kings
how did you record it btw through an amp or clean amp simulator on daw
Straight into my interface and into the DAW, so not through an external amp.
By amp sim, you mean we can connect this directly to a cabinet?
I would rather use it to record direct, or maybe to go straight into a PA.
I am considering buying this pedal for direct recording.
I can put it in my chain like this with no issue right??
Boss SD1 -> BD2 -> Joyo american -> Delay -> Reverb --> into my soundcard
Yes, you can absolutely use it like that.
Good day sir, does it needs battery ? my amp simp wont start working, the LED don't work
Hi! You can use either a 9V battery or a 9V power supply to power the American Sound.
Great demo! I just bought one of that badass the other day. I am playing it through my Orange amp (Amp - American Sound - Guitar). What should be the knob settings in my amp?
Thanks! The amp settings should be what you like to hear. There's no right or wrong here, simply dial in a setting that works for you :)
Got it. Thank you for the reply man! Keep safe!
@@boltybolt8774 You too, and have fun playing!
When I plug this using a TS to TS cable into my studio monitor only the left channel has a sound. If I buy a TRS to TRS cable would it output on both left and right channel?
I'm not 100% sure, but I think probably it would still be mono.
@@RudyBressers alright thank you so much
How does it sound with an overdrive/distortion?
Guitar to OD/DIST to Joyo American Sound?
Pretty good as far as I'm concerned, depending maybe on which overdrive/distortion pedal(s) you put in front of it.
I happen to have a video demoing two overdrives together with the Joyo AS:
th-cam.com/video/96Yh9vkeNgE/w-d-xo.html
Did you use any amp or cab perhaps?
Not on this video. I did use some compression and reverb though.
nobody demo's this pedal with the "drive" knob all the way to 0 which is what I really wanted to hear...
Would this be suitable in front of a Multi Effects Unit to substitute for the units poor (FDR Clean) amp sim?
Absolutely you could use it for that. As long as you can bypass the FX units amp sim. Otherwise you would be stacking two amp sims and that often doesn't sound great.
@@RudyBressers yes I can turn off the onboard amp sim.
Cheers
@@tonyharley5230 Great, good luck! :)
hi can i use joyo american sound as transparent od?
Hi, I don't know if the AS is the best choice for that. I would sooner go for the Azor Overdrive for example.
do you think this is a noisly (hzzzzzz) pedal?
No, not too much in my opinion. Unless maybe you crank the gain all the way up, but that would probably make most amps a litte more noisy ;)
Just bought one because of all the great reviews, but there was a tremendous amount of hiss at any volume over unity. I went ahead and reflowed all the capacitors on the board, because the work seemed subpar and the hiss was gone, so the issues I’m seeing people talk about are more likely bad soldering jobs and not bad components/design.
@@thesonnyboy Ahh that would explain a lot. That's such a shame, but maybe something that happens sometimes when corners are cut to keep the costs as low as possible. Definitely something to be aware of before buying. Or a good reason to return a unit when someone experiences a lot of noise.
Try to stack it with behringer gd, it so killer
Very interesting! :)
Do you use cab sim?
I mean, do you use cab sim in direct system
The Joyo has a built in cab simulation, so that's the cab sim I use.
Have you plugged into P A or powered speaker ?
No, not yet.. So I don't know if it sounds good going directly into a mixer for example. But seeing that it sounds pretty good going into my interface, I'm willing to guess it'll sound ok too with a PA or powered speaker.
@@RudyBressers This little gem was actually made to be played into mixer since it has a speaker cab built in, i do it for live, after it i've got the Mooer Micro DI and it's even better...
Good demo.
Cheers...
@@lowrencemayfield4271 Hi Lowrence, thanks! I haven't yet had the opportunity to use it live (not a lot of gigs lately understandably). But good to hear that it's working well in that setup. Especially considering the very low price point. Could be a nice backup live in case an amp breaks down for example.
@@RudyBressers Hi, yes it's a great back up, actually lately i don't even bring the amp with me, so it's my main amp. :):):):):)
Walking around town to get to the gig with just the guitar and the pedalboard is priceless....
@@lowrencemayfield4271 That's a great way to get to a gig or rehearsal! Not lugging a heavy amp around, just a guitar and pedalboard. I could get used to that too :) :)
How do you connect that pedal to a USB interface? Do you need any DI box solution or something in between?
I just went straight into the interface. If you're on stage, I would go into a DI box.
can also be powred by not batteris
Yep, you can use an adapter or a battery. Whatever works best for you
so this is not a total demo of this pedal, battery powreed depends o n battery power, rite r wrong , get the ped powered by
You can also use a 9V battery to power the pedal indeed. That's not a very exciting thing to demo however ;). Personally I use an adapter, it's just easier for me.
Why is every single demo of this pedal was on a strat duh.
I'm thinking of getting this but i'm not sure it plays well with humbucker guitars.
You can check out a different video I made with the JoYo and two overdrives:
th-cam.com/video/96Yh9vkeNgE/w-d-xo.html
Around 5:20 I switch from my Fender to a Gibson Epiphone SG with Humbuckers. At least you'll get some idea of how the Joyo sounds with a different type of guitar. I hope it helps!
@@RudyBressers Nice, but i think it would be easier to hear amp demos without reverb.
Also your SG sounds very bassy.
Is your pickup polepieces flushed all the way down to the pickup bobbin/body?
They came in stock like this, but i usually raise them about 3-4mm to reduce that boomy sound.
@@melodica5407 The pickup polepieces are quite a bit down. It does sound bassy, but I like that actually with humbuckers. Sounds a bit jazzy, especially clean. I always use a little reverb to make it sound 'real', but maybe that's just my reverb addiction haha :).
@@RudyBressers I see, we have completely different taste. I prefer more balanced humbucker sound and minimal reverb (think room reverb), but that's just the way it is with guitar players, that's what makes it fun 😄
Anyway, thx for your demo. I'm getting this pedal today to go into my super clean neutral solid state amp. I hope it works well.
@@melodica5407 Absolutely, different tastes is what makes music interesting :). Thanks for your comment, I hope you enjoy the Joyo. Have fun playing! 😀
the drive honestly sounds pretty terrible. low gain is fine but then again what isnt at low gain really
Yeah not a big fan of the drive either. That's why I use pedals in front of it to get a good overdrive/distortion sound.
