This pedal is simply amazing for the price in what it can do. If you're a guitar player that has minimalist approach in terms of gear i cannot sterss enough on how good this pedal does it's job. My rig for live gigs is the following: DS1 -> NUX CH-3 -> DD7 -> JOYO American sound -> MOOER Shimverb and straight into the mixer or a sound card and that's it! It's definitely the best choice I made without busting the bank.
Bought this recently and was delivered today (12/5/2021). This pedal is LEGIT!!!!!!! The hype is real!!! I tested mine this evening with a Roland JC-55. I only used the JC reverb and the pedal. Awesome "Blackface tones" and decent "Tweed tones". Nice overdrive on this. This is a steal for $35!!!
I use the American to record directly into my Tascam.. I usually go guitar, tuner, wah, OD, delay, reverb than the American.. Sounds great.. Also use it as an OD pedal b4 my soul food OD... with my Hot Rod Deluxe.. Pedal snobs are missing out...
I have a huge request called "Budget amp tuning" episode . There are lot of guys like me who started guitar journey with cheap equipment. As long as modyfing guitar is relatively easy, amps are something more complicated. I am user of fender 85 SS amp but i wanted to go into more valvy/ less transistory sound. I found out Tech21 and its cheap alternative Joyo American Sound (30 $) . Putting this pedal into my efects loop absolutely changed my tone. I know that analog pedal in ss amp is not exactly what gives you tube amp but in this case i felt in love with that sound.I would love to see episode in which you take just normal SS amp and try to get as much as posible from it using for example Joyo pedals. Of course you can always buy tube amp, but is some countries 600 $ is two mounths sallary. I know you are professional but you impact a lot of home-amatours with rather limited budget. Thanks :)
Got my Joyo American today. Breathtaking. I had been going into a Sweat Cream then to the Tone City Reverb, Tone City Delay, then to my decimator then to an A/DA-GSC-2 Cab Sim then out to the PA. I needed an Amp to bracket the A/DA-GSC-2 on the other end. My thinking was I would then have my Amp setting the base clean tone, then the Sweet Cream would take off. I was right. Even without the Sweet Cream on, the clean tone from the Joyo with the Tone City Reverb has me wanting to play Lenny all day. Adding the Sweet Cream just fills the room with bliss. I feel like I can add maybe a Golden Plexi and have it set up essentially as my lead boost pedal. I already have the Tone City Chorus on the way. I'm almost done. Maybe a compressor. Best sounding rig I've ever had now that the Joyo sits in front setting the base tone for the rest of the Pedals. I did move my decimator right after the Joyo. It doesn't make a peep
About a year ago, I bought the American and the British. I eventually sold the British because it lacked the sparkle & presence of a real Marshall amp. However, the American sounds fantastic. Sometimes I even run it into my little Peavey Vypyr 15(set to Deluxe clean) for low volume practice and it still sounds great. You would think running it into a little digital amp would defeat the purpose but no... It remains dynamic, punchy, sparkly & warm. It's almost like playing thru a small tube amp. Anyway, Big props to Tech21 for their amazing design and big props to Joyo for making it so affordable.
I use the Joyo American Sound as preamp direct into the return effects loop (using just the power-amp). The sound may be affected by the speaker of the amp, but eq and voice knobs are very responsive, so it's not really a problem. I use the Joyo jf-11 equalizer to crank it for solos. No hiss, just plug&play. A little bit dry, so you need a short delay or a reverb. The result is: no more heavey stuffs to carry, just the guitar and the pedal board. I bought a Crate GX-65 for 60euros for little gigs in case there is no amp (I just care about the power-amp as I said). Thank you Shane for your review, you made me make the right choise.
That sounds really, really great. I have the British Sound pedal, which is geared toward Marshall tones and I couldn't be happier. It has become the foundation for my sound. It really is amazing. I may have to get the American too, thanks to you. :)
Hi Shane, today I received one of this pedals... unbelievable sound, and the price is just ridiculous... thanks for this review Shane, now I do have a backup for the amp in case a tube blows or anything.
Finally someone that's actually knows HOW to really use these pedals. They aren't overdrives, They're analog emulation of complete amps. I use in many of my reviews and demo of my channel. You're invited to watch them =)
I bought this pedal as soon as I heard both your videos. It's pretty cool (and inexpensive) and works great when I'm recording through my computer. It also works well on stage when I want to tweak the EQ on my DRRI.
Ok. Wow. To my ears through my headphones it sounds super close to the real deal. I guess I'm going to have to buy one. Wow. Great job Shane. I also enjoyed your blind A/B test on this thingy as well and I thought the A was the amp. Which turns out sounded nicer than the amp in that shot.
Since I've never played one of the Fender amps it's supposed to emulate, I can't speak to how close it gets, but I can say it sounds great on various settings. If nothing else, it works as a great clean boost.
Tech21 made only a very limited batch of a "Deluxe" version of the Blonde; it had the same analog circuit, with added digital control and the ability to store presets (much like the SansAmp PSA-1, or TC's Nova Drive, they use digital volume controls as digitally-controlled variable resistances). That's the only feature I miss in the American Sound. Joyo should make a Deluxe version!!!
Hi, although Ive enjoyed the video its typical of many pedal demos which concentrates on the dist/overdrive sounds. There are a lot of us that are looking for a pedal to go direct into a PA system that gives a warm tube "body" type sound to a CLEAN guitar sound. Most guitars sound lifeless and "plinky" when direct into a PA and Im looking for something that will give me a good clean rich amp sound while on a clean solo setting direct into a PA ( Think Vince Gill song "Liza Jane" or Johnny Hilands standard country sound ). Most reviewers of pedals skip the "good clean sound" review and go straight to the overdrive rock sounds! No illwill meant, just saying :)
The clean sound is GREAT ! . I'm going into the Joyo into a stereo reverb and delay into a P.A. and recording consol and absolutely nails the real thing. I have the real thing and AB them till it was sport on .
I just pulled this out of storage. I almost forgot that I got it years ago for Christmas but at the time I had shit amps. Now I play the Classic Vibe strat (looks like the one Frusciante plays) through Silver trim Bandit.
Hi Shane! Thank you so much for your rewiews, always worth checking out before buying any new gear. In this case I just couldn't believe my ears, but once again, you were right. Mine has just arrived, and it truly sounds amazing. And if it wasn't for you... Thanks again!
2:20 sounds very similar to a demo a guy did on a Fender 75 amp head. So yeah, this thing is very Fender authentic. Can't believe only hearing of this pedal today. Gotta get one
Excellent demo! It's amazing the kind of gear you can get for so little $ these days! I was wondering if you've ever had similar experience with JOYO's Vox sound-alike. I have that one and it sounds superb, to my ears.
Shane- that sounds amazing. I'm a little confused on the amp simulator concept- is it really intended to only plug into your computer? I have a small Fender Champ 600 and was wondering if I could use them together to get killer tweed tones while maintaining a low bedroom volume level to maintain peace in the house- what are your thoughts?
You can plug it into whatever you want. A PC, the front of an amp, the fx loop return/power amp, or whatever. There is no right or wrong way to use them.
Great demo! I was wondering if I need this, as I already have the California Sound pedal, which I guess emulates a Mesa/Boogie? It was ridiculously cheap... Whatever it is I love it, if only for the massive amount of fine tuning you can do with all the knobs. But this one sounds even better! Looking forward to playing around with it soon. Thanks!
My pal had them all, but The American Sound was the one I went for. Well worth the money. I use it for the crunch or just a boost. Not tried it straight into a PA...
How can you not venture into what sounds great but designed to pretty much bring identity of a period of amps being introduced and thereby becoming ''Legends''!!! All up for it I distinctly heard a simulated 5E3 Tweed Deluxe cranked up and with an injection of reverb imagine if you will a Bassman possibly a Tweed Fender Twin with slightly more hair on the midrange breakup.Heck I plugged in with a TC ''Hall of Fame Reverb'' and a BOSS TR-2 (with the upgrades of a Frommel kit) and it was a Hybrid of magic lending itself also to a late '60s Ampeg GV-22 cranked to 12! Beautifully engineered to bring in Marshall tones as well! I also have the AC Tone version that bad boy I hooked up a Gretsch discontinued Pro Jet with TV Jones Classics, sounding every bit of a VOX AC30 with a Beatles era toned Ricky and Tom Petty/Birds ''Top Boost''! These pedals are really imaginatived producing several voicings and not embarrassed to say it all comes from pedals/preamps ''Engines'' for well under $50.00. Well worth the efforts and investing for studio/recording! Now to set up a reliable pedal board for gigging, indulging yourself with key operatives and the magic has only just started!!! A nice Moen ''Shaky Jimi'' MO-VB Univibe/Tremolo pedal(s) for under $50.00 and you won't believe the world of music and what you can accomplish with literally no limits!!
I need one of these to go with my new bullet strat. I have the joyo British petal and I love it.. Run it right into my little 5 channel mixer to my 10 in PA and if I need I can put on my headphones and jam away and not tic off the family lol
Mexican strat, donner blues driver, joyo American, into a clean katana 50 mk2, with a bit of reverb . Getting some sweet tones for a verry modest budget.
Hello from Argentina! For home use, is it convenient to use this pedal instead of connecting the guitar directly to the interface and use plugins? Is there a difference? Thank you very much for the video
I replaced my Seymour Duncan Twin Tube with this. The Duncan was problematic because it uses tubes and they get crackly, are a pain to replace and hard to find. I also added the JOYO Cab Box, another cool pedal from JOYO. I have a basic setup really, Fulltone 69’ always on, Tumnus Mini, MXR Chorus, , into American Sound or Burning Sunn pre-amp then Carbon Copy, into Oceans 11 on Spring the Cab BOX depending on what sound I’m after. I’m set. Running direct is the way to go these days. Especially for me I play solo blues/jazz sets. At home my Katana and my 57 Champ get the job done. I really I would play every show with the 57’ Champ but running direct is easier and the sound is pretty close.
I use it live in the fx loop of my boss gt8 or with other pedals with no amp, straight to the mixer for clean sounds. It sounds like there's an expensive amp on stage but no, just my pedal board. Once I did a gig with this pedal only and my guitar, cleaning up with the guitar volume. That's being lazy but it works. And it's dirt cheap...
I just ordered one of these for my bass. These things seem too good to be true. I don’t get how they can sell these as cheap as they do. Also hell ya, lefty love.
One thing I wish is that this thing had a stereo (dual mono) output that way you can plug in headphones and it would play on both ears - or you could plug it into a stereo speaker with an aux cable. And I'd like if there was a switch on it to just turn off the cab simulation. That way you can just use it as a drive in front of an amp. I know this can be done with a mod, but it should just be made that way.
Hi great video but I just wonder why didnt you try and show how it sounds in full clean mode? Well I used to have a fender deluxe but I sold it, so I need an amp emulation pedal sounds like it. I dont see a big difference between fender sound and this pedal, but I really really wonder what happens if I add my big muff pi or brit combo from boss. Local stores dont have this pedal, I cant try it myself, gotta buy it online... And my second question is, can I plug in directly to the stage system? I mean directly to the mixer without any amp or cabinet? Thanks...
Usually clean is easy for solid state devices which is why I went for more gain. It does clean no problems at all I use it all the time for recording and swear by it.
Hi Shane. I hope you can reply this message. I'm a fan of your demo's and mostly buy a pedal upon seeing your demos. I have a question on my recently purchased American Sound. Which location on the board suits best for this mighty pedal? After Overdrives and Next to Modulations,Delays? or Last in the chain? Thanks in advance.
When you connect this pedal to an amp, do you connect it as a regular pedal? Or do you use the fx loop? And, if you are using a pedal chain, do you use it at the beginig? I mean, before the overdrive?
Shane would love to see you do a video on your approach to recording song demo's - pertaining to how you get your bed tracks together, live canned - whatever your approach is. Thanks
call me crazy but i have the real deals, a 1965 Deluxe, a 1962 Vibrolux and a 1953 Deluxe and this pedal complements them better than any EQ, it's a great box
I just got one and yes this is the real deal, I am putting it through a 74 silverface twin and this is amazing I might get another one light distortion on one more gain on the other, will see in a week if I still love it but this is good
Great demo Shane nice work as usual I already have the California sound and just purchase this today based on your demo thanks again you really have a good year which I appreciate... It seems like everything you recommend is a no brainer and no risk because if you endorse it I end up liking it as well Thanks for your honesty and integrity
hey man, it's driving me nuts - what's the name of the song you play briefly between 1:51-2:08 on this vid? pleeease respond (great review, btw, already won an American Sound and love it!)
Hey, after watching your videos I bought the pedal and it's amazing indeed! Question: which input of your soundcard did you use? Line in, Mic in or Instrument? Thanks for your time, keep up the great work!
Thanks very much for doing this video Shane. I bought the joyo after watching this and think it is amazing. I like your style and enjoy your videos man. Take it easy
Hi Shane, How were you using the amp sim? Through a PA or running through an amps' clean tone? I'm thinking of getting one but running through a Bugera V22. Thoughts?
It sounds absolutely sweet. I'd like to know your opinion on how it sounds through a vox ac15 though. I've got a vox, but what do you reckon of using this pedal in front of a vox as an overdrive type pedal? cheers.
I think thats what the Voice knob set at 9'o'clock is spose to do. It (apparently) gives it a mid scooped character. But cant confirm this, or how well it does it, as im just going off videos.
I'm having a hard time hearing the difference between this and the the Caline Overdrive. I suppose there's more control with this one. But what would you say the main differences are between these two orange overdrives? (As an aside, I'm thinking of building a pedalboard with nothing but orange pedals. For some reason, all my favorite pedals comes in orange enclosures lately.)
hi...i watch most of your review. got a question about these amp sim pedals, where do i put them in my pedal chain? do i put them at the end. or after my distortions before my chorus/delays? thanks!
If you play primarily ambient music, I’d suggest the pedal going before delays and reverbs to not muddy those effects with extra gain/dirt. If you play primarily rock music without much ambience, I’d put the pedal at the end. It’s subjective. The general rule is usually: amp after anything that alters the EQ (Wah, EQ pedal, compressor, Dirt, modulation) but before time based effects. But someone like EVH put his modulation effects and sometimes his delays at the front of his chain to have very dirty phaser, flanger, delays and reverbs going into distortion and then into the amp. Experiment. The beauty of this pedal is that it’s small and you can just switch where it is on a pedal board easily enough.
what do you think about playing the American sound into a VOX amp (like ac15), or in a really different amp? D'you you think it's a good match or a chaotic choise?
could use it as a dist pedal, for example I have the joyo bantam as a amp, and I don not if it is possible to use the joyo american as a dist. what do you think?
Shane: terrific video, as usual. ***Would you consider making a video of this pedal with a bass played through it?*** I believe this would work terrifically for bass, and there are no videos of this anywhere (that I can find).
Thanks, I think it sounds killer. I am not sure how it would sound in an amp .. yet :) I have the VOX pedal as well but no AC-15 so maybe I can run them both and see what happens. Odds are it would sound okay in a VOX it should give you the fender-like tone as long as the amp was set clean.
Really?! This thing sounds sweet! Hey man, I've got a question about this Joyo... Can it go straight to the PA? Sometimes I really don't want to carry my amp for rehearsal so I'd like to plug this thing straight into the PA. Have you tried it? Greetings.
I have used it that way for an entire year, and - yes, it can (and should) go straight to PA - that IS the original purpose of that series of pedals (Tech21 SansAmp Character series of pedals)... It has built-in cabinet simulation which is always active, and sounds phenomenal.
FYI these don't have "cab simulators" in them despite what people claim. The so-called cab simulator is nothing more than a couple of capacitors and resistors. That's it. There is no simulation being done. It's just caps & resistors that the signal passes through and they call it a cab simulation.
I love how players get great tone from low cost gear. Well done!
I can't believe how close this gets to the real thing. Who knew the best American tones came from China?!?!
That's just plain dumb.

I'm surprised of how well this pedal takes dirty fuzz pedal in front of it. Best for the price
Found the same with the Billy corgan signature op amp big muff pedal 😍
I just ordered one of these for my bass. These things seem too good to be true. I don’t get how they can sell these as cheap as they do.
Also hell ya, lefty love.
So essentially it's a di box, cab sim, and preamp? Wow.
It is a great pedal, but it still needs a di-box if the PA is a distance away.
Get a Simplifier DLX.
It does clean no problems at all I use it all the time for recording and swear by it.
intheblues Well, thank you :)
Great demo,have ordered the pedal.Thanks.
Hi! Great video! Thanks! Where do you suggest it's best to put the other pedals? Before or after the Am Sound?
When you connect this pedal to an amp, do you connect it as a regular pedal? Or do you use the fx loop? And, if you are using a pedal chain, do you use it at the beginig? I mean, before the overdrive?
I connect it to the effects loop return if my Fender tweed deluxe. Sounds amazing!
Pretty damn close indeed ! Affordable as well. Thx for the vid - cheers.
Shane would love to see you do a video on your approach to recording song demo's - pertaining to how you get your bed tracks together, live canned - whatever your approach is. Thanks
This pedal is so good it's a joke! I can't get enough of it. And it costs peanuts.
Sounds great so far. How does it clean up by rolling off the guitar's volume? How about dynamics?
call me crazy but i have the real deals, a 1965 Deluxe, a 1962 Vibrolux and a 1953 Deluxe and this pedal complements them better than any EQ, it's a great box
+strangher11 So, you use it as a pedal before your amp? If so, into which input? Thanks.
I just got one and yes this is the real deal, I am putting it through a 74 silverface twin and this is amazing I might get another one light distortion on one more gain on the other, will see in a week if I still love it but this is good
Meant to say I listened to this vid a couple of weeks and ordered one.
BLACKSNAKEGUITAR Awesome stuff, thanks for the nice comments. :)
sounds great just like a Fender Stratocaster must sound
Great demo Shane nice work as usual I already have the California sound and just purchase this today based on your demo thanks again you really have a good year which I appreciate... It seems like everything you recommend is a no brainer and no risk because if you endorse it I end up liking it as well Thanks for your honesty and integrity
hey man, it's driving me nuts - what's the name of the song you play briefly between 1:51-2:08 on this vid? pleeease respond (great review, btw, already won an American Sound and love it!)
it's an original I wrote about 11 years ago.
I go Guitar > Joyo AS > Zoom GFX 1 > PA for live gigs with my reggae band.
Cool demo bro
Just placing an order for one.
Bd2 into this sounds dope
In retrospect compare this to the Chris Stapleton amp review. The contrast is stark.
Thanks :)
After watching a few reviews and seeing this on Amazon for £9.77 (new) I couldn't resist. I eagerly await it's arrival from China in a week or two. :)
Hey, after watching your videos I bought the pedal and it's amazing indeed!
Question: which input of your soundcard did you use? Line in, Mic in or Instrument?
Thanks for your time, keep up the great work!
Will it work if I plug the pedal straight to headphone, so it works as a quite practice tool?
Great review! Glad you play some real guitar parts and don't just strum a couple of chords over and over like some reviews, cheers
Thanks very much for doing this video Shane. I bought the joyo after watching this and think it is amazing. I like your style and enjoy your videos man.
Take it easy
Hi Shane,
How were you using the amp sim? Through a PA or running through an amps' clean tone? I'm thinking of getting one but running through a Bugera V22. Thoughts?
Good job
It sounds absolutely sweet. I'd like to know your opinion on how it sounds through a vox ac15 though. I've got a vox, but what do you reckon of using this pedal in front of a vox as an overdrive type pedal? cheers.
Great demo Shane, is it possible to get a Princeton / Deluxe tone with the American ? Thx
I think thats what the Voice knob set at 9'o'clock is spose to do. It (apparently) gives it a mid scooped character. But cant confirm this, or how well it does it, as im just going off videos.
Great review thx. I just bought one and am very happy with its sound and the incredible price [in USA]. Having fun. Cheers.
Great to hear!
I will like a video of the Joyo American Sound on clean settings with overdrive pedals connected straight through a PA
Thank you for the review - one question: did you use ANY kind of NOISE reduction/gate (during/after recording)?
Excellent sound...must get one to pair with my Strat. Great vid mate :)
I'm having a hard time hearing the difference between this and the the Caline Overdrive. I suppose there's more control with this one. But what would you say the main differences are between these two orange overdrives?
(As an aside, I'm thinking of building a pedalboard with nothing but orange pedals. For some reason, all my favorite pedals comes in orange enclosures lately.)
hi...i watch most of your review. got a question about these amp sim pedals, where do i put them in my pedal chain? do i put them at the end. or after my distortions before my chorus/delays? thanks!
At the end I think, like your amp would be lol
Mate, how much do you spend in importing pedals each month? Great video, thx.
could use it as a dist pedal, for example I have the joyo bantam as a amp, and I don not if it is possible to use the joyo american as a dist. what do you think?
mine is fantastic but really noisy with single coils. Could be a defect of mine. Does your make noise?
Shane: terrific video, as usual. ***Would you consider making a video of this pedal with a bass played through it?*** I believe this would work terrifically for bass, and there are no videos of this anywhere (that I can find).
Thanks, I think it sounds killer. I am not sure how it would sound in an amp .. yet :) I have the VOX pedal as well but no AC-15 so maybe I can run them both and see what happens. Odds are it would sound okay in a VOX it should give you the fender-like tone as long as the amp was set clean.
i have this pedal and love it
Whats the best way to get a better tone? Going through the input or to return?
Nenad Karisic
Can the cab simulation be deactivated?
ArriCAT5e Unfortunately, no, it can not be turned off.
So being analog it’s quite different from a kemper profiler, right?
Do I need a di box for this to go straight to my audio interface?
Hi! This sounds great!! Do u think i can use it with a carl martin rockbug?
FYI these don't have "cab simulators" in them despite what people claim. The so-called cab simulator is nothing more than a couple of capacitors and resistors. That's it. There is no simulation being done. It's just caps & resistors that the signal passes through and they call it a cab simulation.
Where should this go in the order of pedals on the board? I have Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail, EH-C9, Qtron, Donner Alpha Cruncher. thanks! :)
