"Arriving from India on the heels of an illustrious festival run, we’re pleased to present you the online premiere of Wade, an intense post-apocalyptic animation that showcases its creative team’s fresh design ideas in terms of visual style, worldbuilding, and storytelling, all of which they marry to…a deep sense of environmental conscientiousness?
Set in a future version of their home city of Kolkata which has been made uninhabitable by climate change, the film’s directors, Kalp Sanghvi and Upamanyu Bhattacharyya, craft a moody meditation that imagines survival in a post-disaster landscape, only to then explode the proceedings into a visceral action-thriller. While the film’s setting and supernatural undertones appeal on primal geek levels, and a kickass confrontation with a streak of tigers is unquestionably the heart of the film, Wade manages to transcend its stripped-down plotting and feel more substantive than a simple exercise in badassery. Wade’s initial and patient eye to its flooded surroundings, its thoughtful depiction of the group dynamics within its band of refugees, and the artful and inconclusive ending, all shine in the limited space surrounding its big showcase set-piece. Together, they provide the level of detail and specificity that elevates the action as well as justifies the high-concept climate angle of the film.
Animation and environmentalism have been engaged in a fruitful partnership for the last several years, a mini-trend I noted in last year’s review of the French student film, "Migrants". Animation’s freedom to depict whatever is imaginable with a total disregard for live-action cinema’s need for feasibility or budget has allowed it to be a useful storytelling medium for tackling big abstract concepts like climate change via metaphor or allegory. What distinguishes Wade from the other examples I’ve cited is not only in harder edge (ripped off limbs and infanticide make this a film to keep away from the kiddos) but also its status as a project hailing from Southeast Asia, one of the areas most afflicted already by climate change.
In conversing with Sanghvi and Bhattacharyya it became immediately clear how much this premise really inspired Wade. It was at the heart of the team’s crowdfunding pitch in 2016 when they became the fastest project on the Indian site Wishberry to meet their funding goal, and much of the same reasoning persists in 2022, as the directors noted that,
“While there is a lot of nostalgic storytelling about Kolkata, being a space steeped in centuries-old culture and tradition, not very many stories envision the future of the city. Sadly, Kolkata, along with several other cities in the world like Bangkok, Dhaka, Shanghai, New York, and Amsterdam are extremely vulnerable to rising sea levels…

my small take on the newborn tiger and tiger fight was:
The newborn was a sign of adaption and change. its paws become more human-like and its strips are almost liquid-like to blend with the water while the orange tiger that killed the blind child's mother and try to kill the cub might have been a figure of how some people refuse to change or adapt even when its clear you have to the fact the bigger mother tiger had to assert herself to the orange tiger that not only went after a large amount food alone and try to ward off other tigers to keep it. A sign of greed and self-interest instead of helping and staying with the pack.
When it saw the newborn new features that would make it very adaptable it try to kill the newborn because it was clear it would be survivor better. So the tiger rather kill of any changes or run away when it is lost. Given it's neck got cut it will die much earlier than before.

I think this is probably a pretty correct I interpretation overall. There probably isn't just ONE way to look at this film, like most art. But that's definitely most of my takeaway.

It feels like the cub of the water walking tiger took the spirit of the drowned baby, which turned it human. Very cool animation.

This touches a nerve. Being born and brought up in Kolkata, having roamed Park Street since childhood, and having experiences all the subtle references that the animators so cleverly disguised, this short presents a truly nerve-racking alternative future. And of course, incredible work on the animation!
Since I've never been out of my country and I've never been to India, could you share some or even just one of the "subtle references"? I'd love to appreciate this short even more than I already do. Even if you choose not to, thanks for your comment!

It seems like there is a lot of interest for people to know about Kolkata so thanks for making me rewatch this video again. Here goes few points:
1. 0:42 That's the famous Howrah bridge
2. 0:56 The object in the foreground is a tubewell. "Bishti" are people who deliver water from these tubewell to your doorsteps in big leather pouches for a fee.
3. 1:13 That's Howrah station - the largest and the busiest station in the entire Indian railway system.
4. 1:19 is the entrance to the Park Street metro station which is at the heart of the Kolkata metro system. This station is always crowded. Kavi Subhash and Dumdum are the two ends of the line ofc.
5. 1:25 train assembly station, dont know the name though. Something like Battersea region of London
6. 1:27 classic power grid unit pasted with yellow tinted ads. These are notorious for advertising shady massage parlours of the city.
7. 1:34 that's Victoria Memorial
8. 1:49 Classic bengal architecture - the arched doorway and red bricks
9. 3:05 That's the bengali script below English ofc. Clearly shows signs of a rebellion.
10. 3:16 That's the iconic Flury's bakery at Park Street. Probably serves the best breakfast in the city even today (if you look carefully at the banner, you can see the year it was started). The billboards you see are various brands and shops. Since Kolkata was the capital of the British empire, they modelled a lot of the city on London. This was the hub of Anglo-Indians so the legacy of the place is still rich in aristocracy. Although, the number is dwindling now, IMO.
PS: I'm a student who is away from home so this video just adds to the fact that I miss my city a lot.

Absolutely astounding both is animation, artistry and storytelling! I also love that super early on it already hinted at the tigers, not just from faded murals in the scenery, but with one man wearing a mask on the back of his head. For those who may not know- many people in India, especially those that work on the outskirts of forests such as loggers, wear masks painted/carved to look like faces on the back of their heads because tigers are ambush predators. Tigers are less likely to attack prey head-on because the risk of being seen before the pounce can allow the prey to escape a potential surprise attack. This way, the chance of being attacked unaware from behind is greatly reduced.

That trick would work on predatory humans who aren't close enough to see clearly which way the guard is looking.
Tigers also have white dots on the back of their ears to look like eyes, so they have a natural mask like that themselves

I got chills running down my spine when i saw the trader's assembly frame. So beautifully drawn and animated. Kudos to the artist, I literally see every place shown in this short everyday. Damn
EDIT: For anybody curious I think the mystical tiger that could walk on water was probably an inspiration from "Dakshin Ray" a shapeshifting tiger God of the Sundarban tribes quite similar to the Sming of Cambodia.
Is that's why one of the man is wearing that mask on back of his head!! .. I just googled about dakshin ray after seeing your comment 😅

sadly majority of consumers or society as a whole are still in that phase of "cartoons/animations are for children" and doesn't understand or appreciate the amount of hard-work and dedication that goes into making animations

the problem is animation like this, though amazingly beautiful, is really time consuming and hard.
animators are thoroughly underpaid. and this style must have been painful to work with
so people tend to want to make cheap shite that is for children, because they think they have no standards (which they are wrong about)

For those who do not know, in the Indian Sundarbans people are killed by Tigers almost weekly. Also, people of the Indian Sundarbans used to consume tiger flesh many decades ago.

Isn't it due to depletion of the forest land? Since the forest land is vanishing the chances of hunting goes less every time as the other wildlife animals are almost vanishing so they depend on human flesh of sundarban.
I love how original the animation style is and how the faces of each character, human or tiger, show so much individualism and personality.

This is so amazing ! Can someone explain what is the meaning of the mother tigress walking on the water? Is it because that the cub is magical? As the cub comes out of the womb, the mother tigress sinks in the water. Is it like the baby tiger is bridge between tigers and human living together?As the paws looked like human hands. And also the girl at the end seems to have the same magic that she can walk on the water. Is it like they are next generation so they have special powers? Can you guys share your thoughts .

I think the piece as a whole is meant to convey both the clash and coexistence of man and tiger in a world ravaged by the changing climate. Like in the Sunderbans
It's a beautifully animated short film.
The animator is a senior from my college. As he had explained in the first screening back in 2019, the tigress that walks on water is an outcome of evolution. This evolution takes place to due to constant floods in the area. Over the years, sea level is rising in costal areas of India because of the climate change. The tigress and the cub are depictions of how everything is slowly adapting to new environmental conditions. And the tigress sinks in water, not due to the cub, but because of going unconscious after giving birth.

Incredible animation and drawing style. The view of shattered and sunken cities populated by animals and with almost no humans left has it's own unique atmosphere.
They story is a bit confusing for me, but very likely it is related to reincarnation. A life of human child goes to the tiger cub.

This is...absolutely INCREDIBLE. I love how the tigers are slightly pale and squiggly and drawn with super thin lines. I love everything about this. I love the implied worldbuilding and MIRACULOUS sense of setting and atmosphere.
No one's gonna talk about how one of the guys just literally took a crying baby out of it's mother arms and drowned it right in front of the mother
After that the tiger gave birth to a tiger cub. Perhaps the soul of a human baby has been reincarnated into a tiger cub. Meaning life and death is an eternal cycle.

It has some inspiration from Chinese animation. You know, Chinese animation have a lot of landscape shots and negative space.
So, I am presuming kolkata swallowed by the rising sea levels was completely abandoned, and the city transformed into a biosphere for the nearby wildlife to occupy.
The people seem trapped there for maybe a couple of years.(time is something I can't get my head around but presumably if it's longer it might be max 10 years)
The group we are following, could be travelling to a different location, maybe they haven't found a safe location yet so they keep changing.
The tigers seem strange they're not the solitary hunters we know that trek the Sundarban forest. But they have an anomaly with them, maybe with superstitouse powers I assume.
The feline group had a man-eater let's call him, who attack's our travel out of pure spite, doesn't even consider them as food. The anomaly doesn't seem to agree to violence of the maneater and thus calls him back.
Amd then the transfer happens.
There is a similarity to the boy and Space/Jesus tiger they're both devoid of iris, the boy shows signs of unable to see and shows clear signs of confusion and only reacts to senses like sound and touch, thus blind. This might mean the Anomaly might be blind too.
In the end we see a rise in the water droplets just like how the The Tiger Jesus would cause distortion around him, and maybe the boy was given the powers similar to the Blind tiger. Their lack in senses might the requirement for the acquisition of this mysterious power, and the tigers body reacted to this and might have caused his rebirth and then later protect his successor from the man-eater knowing he would later kill the boy after his death.

And sure Indian animation doesn't need to look the same but at least there's a hope now. Man I'm so glad India is making animation like this. I know there are talented people there and we need more! Not the weird childish ones you get on TV but animation for adults.
There's a small detail that the person who is wearing mask behind his head harkens back to the Indian miners in the 19th century who were prone to tiger attacks from behind while working. So, they wore face masks positioned behind their heads which stopped tiger attacks drastically
In my interpretation. After the world has flooded tigers winded up thriving as they were adept to living in pools of water. So their ability to swim increased. now they are more like jaguars. In a way relying on the water to get around. also in the wild there have been instances of tigers working together. Or fathers taking care of their cubs. On rare ocassions male tigers even let young cubs feed. And due to environmental pressures tigers honed in that skill of compassion and basically became family groups.
As for the weird miracle baby it may have been a result of reincarnation. The infant who was drowned scarcely had enough time to live so when it died its souls immedietly went to the tiger cub. Resulting in the human hands. As for the magical female tiger. Probably just that. A fantastical twist to this story nothing more.
That's how I saw all this anyway.

2:11 man wearing a mask behind his head. It's a practice done wet to this day to prevent tiger and leopard attacks. You see Big cats always prefer to attack their prey from behind and if people wear masks they think they ate looking back. It's a life-saving hack, especially when going out at night.

The city is Kolkata and very accurately depicted especially the buildings and the air conditioners.
And about the tigers, I don't know about west Bengal but where I am from every coastal village has its own legend of a mandating animal be it a tiger, leopard or crocodile.
This is a wonderful piece of film. The phenomenally written story, the drama intensified in the subtle scenes and the dementia of the characters(both human and the tigers) all make it a memorable piece of art.

This gave me the chills. Amazing animation and one of my favourites short films, when the baby was drowned I had to cover my mouth. You perfectly captured the terror of the people and the dread of the mother once her baby was drowned.

That the planet doesnt give a shit and it will kill us and erase our existence from it surface. In the words of George Carlin go ask the people of Pompeii if the planet feels threaten by humans. We are tiny bacteria to this planet nothing we do matters to it.
This short film is spine chilling yet mesmerizing. Most importantly a very good job done in terms of animation considering the fact it is produced by a young bunch professionals. Eagerly waiting for more such productions. 👏🏻

and to be honest at first i totally got studio ghibi vibes...
Would like to see a part 2 of this, where it’s focused about how the mother will develop after her loss and how her relationship dynamic will progress with the group, most certainly with the guy who forced her to give up her child in order to prevent from being exposed where they were hiding.

This is really a piece of art. This was a deep story and that too without dialogue but still perfectly conveyed the story. The moment when that man kills the baby was very dark but deep at the the same time truly this was at another level. Thought it's a 10 min Short story but from the perspective of story telling was better than a average 2hr movie
Dang the alpha tiger really give me Princess Mononoke vibe, like the floating bubble and magical feeling.

In my opinion whoever dies becomes reincarnated as the tigers. As sundarbans is a habitat of tigers mostly. And all of them are fighting for their survival as the climate change has created havoc in both human and wildlife. The girl at last was shown as blind and the same eyes of the mother tiger was same as hers. The child drowned was rebirthed as tiger cub. It meant that whoever dies the last becomes a savior (water walking tigers) to protect others from death and the
transformation hereafter. Both the mother tiger and the baby cub tried to protect the blind girl. Other tigers tried to eat the humans for survival and the humans ate the tigers for theirs ( it was shown in the last )
I have watched this film at IFLA 2021 & man o man I was so blown away by this film's animation & sound design. Kudos to the makers & the people behind it.

In a turbulent flood world caused by climate change an Indian city must adapt and evolve to overcome the obstacles just as the Tigers do a blind tiger has evolved to walk on the water and can see that so too has the blind little girl
However through life there is death and as the blind tiger gives birth to the next generation of evolved Tigers she must pass on
The village moves on and continues to adapt the best of its ability such as processing the tiger meat for their people
Only then do we discover that the girl too has the ability to walk on water as she is the next generation and has evolved
The blind tiger could see that though she could not see her she felt it which is why The tiger protected the girl in her last moments so that the other tiger did not kill her
A respect for nature for those around us and the ability to adapt and evolve in a very turbulent world

What is dystopia?

It's sad how America inspired other countries that animation is more than just a few frames, but then half a century later becoming the country that created the "animation is for kids" stereotype.
The emotions behind this are raw, it hurt but thank you for sharing your vision.

Indians love supporting from the sidelines. They say "prod 2 be from india" but aren't willing to fund animation projects. They make fun of arts degrees and animation is seen as a job for underachievers. They don't support projectslike these either, this had to be crowd funded over 4 years and almost closed. "Proud indians" are fair weather allies. They love taking credit but refuse to gove any support whatsoever. So much for indian pride.
This needs to be a series. Some one fund these guys!
this is so cool, indian animators are very talented but there has been no way for them to let out their talents through indian cartoons, many people make fun of indian cartoons because of shows like motu patlu and pakadam pakdai which lack any spirit and are made for the soul reason for money. Animations like these show how great our animators are and I hope the indian animation industry grows and becomes huge like the japanese or american industries because there are so many tales to tell from here and there are so much talented people here.

Today I'm feeling proud to be bangali (because someone raising the awareness that our culture is filled with great artists) & indian after watching this - even though it's been 2 years since i first watch it but this stuff is so good it's not coming off eassily.
This was absolutely stunning ..... I felt an accute sense of horror and creepiness throughout the story.... I really hope to see more Indian, to be more precise, more Bengali made amazing animation like this ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I absolutely love this. Every scene has purpose in furthering the narrative. It's dark and scary while being internally consistent. Watching this gives you doesn't give the impression that it is trying to be scary because it does that naturally. The art style is unique truly feels like it was inspired from real life which makes it so orginal. I have seen a lot of stories based on climate change and many with the same message as this one and it's a very important message as climate change is one of the biggest if not the biggest problem being faced by humanity right now but they can get become repeatative or preachy. This one however nails it in execution and makes something genuinely enjoyable and unique despite there being millions of work with the same theme.
In short, it's very good and the creators who made have all my gratitude and respect. Thank you for the great animation and making it so easily available to public.

in a recent "down to earth'' issue , i read an article about how the cyclic tidal destruction leads to many living in and around Sundarbans to move to inner parts where they are exploited to human trafficking in the lure of stable job . Watching this with that certain context , did made this weigh in differently . The tension captured is so so good. gave me goosebumps . the character designs for the tigers evoke those mystical feel and the paralling theme of life and death with many interpretations , all within a time frame of 3 mins makes it magical. Congrats Ghost animation team

Like in Life of Pi, I believe the tiger represents the brutal nature of humans. Drowning that baby was absolutely cruel, but was it a necessary evil? Tigers are also seen as cruel, performing necessary evils, and evolving to the cruel world of mankind.
Hats off, to this wonderful team on this animated short film. Really enjoyed watching this. The music, animation, story everything was very well made. Your hard work paid off. And to know that this was made by an Indian Studio Awesome, let this be an standard for Indian animation. Let there be more like this, Animation can be a powerful entertainment influence let it grow further.
Hope this heralds a new age in Indian animation storytelling. The film hits where it hurts most. The details are excruciating- পালাবি কোথায়- are we really coming to this? Is this dystopian waterworld our future?

The best experience of the disasters that lie ahead of us if we do not take care of it now. Amazing architectural spaces, so well defined and with great detail. Amazing to convey a whole story through a short film. Surreal, tense, thrilling and with a message, so subtly conveyed! Hats off to the creators.
Climate change is an issue of intergenerational equity. Radical mitigation now will minimise the damage and save our ecosystem. Congratulations to the young Directors and the team in capturing this problem in context of Sundarbans, a world heritage listed national park in West Bengal and it's iconic animals. This short animated film should be used in primary schools to raise awareness amongst children. Great effort, excellent production. Keep up the good work and spreading your key messages!!

This is a masterpiece of art and cinema in a handful of minutes. I'm absolutely blown away at the art, the shots, the cinematography, music, sound, and more importantly, the animation. This is straight-up Hollywood material all over. My compliments on the amazing work from Upamanyu Bhattacharyya

This short film is not able to leave indifferent. This is real art. A very atmospheric picture, reflecting the despondency of poverty in a flooded city, obviously the victim of a severe crisis. It's like I've been there. You can not put without praise and the storyline. It's terrible when animals are not much more humane than us. Since we have imagined ourselves to be the crown of nature, we must correspond to our title and not be disgraced, degrading in all aspects of our life. This is definitely one of the best things I've ever seen on TH-cam. 😃👍

hats off to this masterpiece, especially the sound designing. its just off the charts and was so immersive. the animation style was really indian-like and i love it. the design of how kolkata might look as an aftermath of a disaster is really awesome. it gave silent, deserted and threatful hazard vibes. really splendid work. love this. and this should be recognised even more than it deserves. still feels like these words arent enough for this gemstone.
