In 2022, small sound bars are more than just TV speaker replacements. Small soundbars with big sound are more and more common with the likes of Polk Magnfii Mini, Sonos Beam and LG Eclair hitting the market. The "soundbars suck" days are slowing becoming a thing of the past, with some of the more innovative advancements in home theater coming in the tiniest of packages. Is Polk's latest compact soundbar, the Polk Magnifi Mini AX the best small soundbar in 2022?

so... Yes I am around. - My personal desire of Audio Reviews I'd like to hear are the differences between MC low-cost solutions and MM equivalent examples.
... I DID buy the LP140 Audio Technica that you suggested, but with INFLATION at the Grocery & my budget for a Otofone 2M-Black disappeared - so - I looked and looked and FINALLY FOUND something about 1/2 the price NAGOKI (sp) 200 mm Chartridge and have been happy.
..... But that doesn't mean I didn't find a few others maybe as worthy but costing more or less the same, but requiring a further cost by being MC that needed it's own Amp to Boost signals.
..... anyway, thanks for the continued work! - m.

Absolutely cannot wait for the day that Kristi just appears alone with her audio review as if it were always that way and upon conclusion looks off camera and says, “Now let’s find out what Andrew thinks…” ;)

My friend was using his TV speakers for years, I tried to get him on the full 5.1 channel band wagon but he wasn't willing to commit to the cost or the space. I then suggested a sound bar combo as they are small and inexpensive. He bought one and they love it. There is a HUGE demographic that has no interest in a full home theater set up, but would greatly benefit from a sound bar. TV speakers suck, and an you can get a VASTLY improved performance with a sound bar for minimal investment.

    WELLLLLL....
If you live in a New York City studio apartment like I do, a room full of gear (to show off) just doesn't cut it anymore.
Almost 20 years ago, when I came back to NYC (from Oregon), I sold most of my Home Theater gear just to move. Except my PIONEER LaserDisc Player (still can't part with my 100+ LDs). Been through quite a few soundbars within that time. A humbling experience for an Audio/Cine-Phile like myself. Who was used to multiple components and speakers.
So unless one has a big house and makes Da Big Bucks, SoundBars are the way to go. Especially for apartments dwellers like myself.
And they have been getting better over the years for sure.
I have everything hooked up to my Nakamichi.
Even my old PIONEER turntable (via my LG TV's RCA ports).
    Again,
    Great Review.

Thanks to your review, I purchased this for a small condo. Really does do well. I also found that night mode does a good job for music. It sounds like it makes it a simple stereo sound. So, I can live with it for music and movies pretty well. I was able to get it on sale for $100 off, so it is an easy keep for a bedroom or small space.

Kristi gets my vote... Having two viewing rooms one a bar and the other a room full of gear I can say they each have their place. Listening to Tacata and Fugue in D minor with two 15" subs carrying the pedal notes is priceless and clear dialog on a bar is great.

Thanks for the review! Always interested to hear the opinions of people who have heard VERY expensive gear, on more affordable home audio equipment. As someone who has a small living room with not a lot of room for equipment...I personally prefer the tiny little soundbar that can emulate a room full of gear. And for Kristi, some of your glowing reviews for soundbars opened me up to the thought of owning one myself, and how good they can sound. Thanks again.

I bought this sound bar for my parents and it suits their needs perfectly and for the size I was pretty impressed. the bar itself is very mid-heavy due to the size of the drivers I assume. wish all the Polk bars had adjustments for treble and bass and then a separate adjustment for the sub. that's my only gripe. For myself I tested out the MagniFi Max AX SR and was surprisingly impressed compared to my every day Vizio elevate and the Bose 900/700 subwoofer and other higher end sound bars I have tried. I was pleasantly surprised to see a treble adjustment button on the remote. I would love for you guys to review that sound bar because I'm very curious about how it stacks up to the more expensive sound bars in your opinion. Plus there are no reviews of it on TH-cam so I had to basically purchase blindly.

We have a Sonos Playbar in the living room and I’m constantly amazed at the quality when we turn on a program with a solid surround mix. It has excelled in two completely different rooms. Still does not compare to the Anthem/Emo/Triad setup in the theater room but for a single box it’s VERY impressive.

I've seen people put big Samsung soundbars and it takes too much space this is a great solution for a small room. Too bad that you didn't had the LG at hand because they look pretty similar too but for me this one is great for a bedroom TV and might wait till the holidays and pick one up.

The speaker looks so small compared to your TV lol. Less is more as I grow older, so yeah if I could get something that sounds like my room full of gear with one speaker or 2 instead of 5.1.2, then yes. 100%.

I've had soundbars for over 20 years now and they have come a very long way. I think once they started introducing upfiring speakers it has changed the game and now more recently Dolby atmos. It's no question that now is the time to transition over. Right now I have the q900a with rears and it sounds good. Buy I'm looking to get the 95qr but when it goes further down in price.

My dad just purchased one of these and has been telling me how good it sounds (after giving me back the bar he was borrowing from me). He said the dialog enhancement is really good because I hate people doing current sound mixing. It would work well in my living room since I have my sub up by my hearth. He said the 3d is really good at the wide but lacks some height. Can I set up 2 Bluetooth speakers for a L and R channel instead of rear? Our living room just doesn't have a great way to do rear sound.

I bought a Magnify mini for the bedroom a few years ago and was immediately impressed.
Aside from the tweeters being close together, it provides excellent, mostly full-range sound. Though the small sub doesn't shake the house like my Cinema 600 sub does, it still provides accurate, present low frequencies. Small as it is, it still has HDMI-arc and Bluetooth functionality.
I must agree, that it's better for TV and movies, than it is for music.
All said, it's a great, solid performer in a small package.
The "ax" looks as though it's a worthy successor, but not enough to warrant upgrading from the mini... IMHO.
    Thanks for a good review!
    With regard to your question:
The small soundbar is GREAT in the bedroom, where WAF rules.
In the den, the Klipsch Cinema 600 is much more appropriate with it's width and powerful sub.
I've had a 7.1 system in the past and for my needs, it simply wasn't worth it.... speakers everywhere, big receiver, etc. The Cinema 600 provides all the immersive sound I want for movies in a small, simple, uncluttered package. Well, that big sub isn't exactly easy to hide or ignore.
Since my serious stereo system is in the same room with it's speakers an dual subs.... the less imposing soundbar system is all the more appreciated.

I mean, I am closing on a new house soon. We will be dedicating the bottom floor to a home theater with "all the gear" but there's still the matter of televisions in the kitchen/living room and bedroom which require better sound than what any TV can muster - that's where sound bars like this make much more sense. There's no reason to set up atmos and surround sound in every room. If we're doing critical watching/listening, it will be in the theater. But, having something like this in the bedroom would be perfect for those other occasions. In this regard, it makes much more sense even than bigger or more expensive sound bars like the ambeo.

While your channel has opened my eyes to how impressive soundbars can be (3 drivers that sound like 15? What is this magic??) I still haven't encountered one that made me think "I not only need that, but I want it over a traditional pair or suite of speakers." I guess I'm just too old school. Big room full of gear all the way!
That said, in high school I would have loved this thing atop my 9" TV.

QOTD: I find the smaller devices more impressive. I think both soundbars and full sized systems have their place. One big advantage of soundbars is easier integration, which should result in more folks getting a better home audio experience. As someone whom doesn't always love the value proposition of soundbars compared to flexibility and upgrade paths of more components, I am genuinely curious to hear some of these models for myself. So yes I think your channel is doing its job, and doing so in the most entertaining way. Also loved that you had to get one more jab in at marantz.

I've got my 5.1 downstairs and my Yamaha soundbar upstairs. The Yamaha even sounds pretty good with music. It can give my Denon/ KEF system a good run for the money. I have no problem recommending soundbars to most people. In fact they are a must have for any TV. If you are listening over TV speakers, get out of the stone age and into an electronics store to see what you are missing.

It’s nice to have options, soundbar for those who want better sound with ease of use , or go all out with separate components and speakers.
Even with turntables including Bluetooth connection can be added to a soundbar as an option to enjoy vinyl . If your happy with a simple soundbar no need to go all audiophile. Depending who you ask and circumstances no right answer to the QOTD only opinions. Appreciate your reviews.

This sound bar is truly impressive. I experimented with the sound modes and agree that 3D mode is THE mode to use if you want a dynamic cinema experience. It blows me away especially when I crank it past 50%. My friends thought I was playing a trick on them with hidden speakers
Something that stuck out to me was Kristis comment on dialog not being great. I had a similar “issue” and found that my wife and I prefer movie mode for most of our TV watching in the evenings. Movie mode seems to boost the subtle details and dialog especially at lower volumes compared to the mighty and dynamic 3D mode.
Going from 3D mode to movie mode reminds me of setting Dynamic range setting to “Normal” on my Yamaha receiver in my man cave. Night mode works well too but kills a bit too much of the bass imho

Hello Andrew and Kristi. As always, I love your reviews of all thing audio and visual. In response to your question about considering a sound bar . . . . yes I now feel that the tech is that good that I would consider one. I currently have a 5.1 setup with descrete speakers and an AV receiver which are 10 years old. However, I don't think my wife will let me start cutting holes in ceiling for some Atmos speakers. I am very much looking forward to you doing a review of the new Sennheiser Ambeo Plus soundbar (and sub, hopefully!) as I feel it could be the sound bar to replace my current system.

While it is fun to have your "big" speaker / amp / receiver setup and be able to hear what you've paid for in all those purchases, there's something about a small speaker setup that sounds big, that can just put a huge smile on your face. I had my Klipsch - The Fives setup in the front of the room, along with my "big" speakers, and played them for a friend and asked him which speakers he thought he was hearing the sound from.... without hesitating, he told me there was no possible way that what he was hearing was coming from the small speakers sitting on the tv stand and it had to be the bigger speakers with the sub.... I couldn't help but grin from ear to ear when I told him he was wrong. If I hadn't purchased some new speakers recently, I would definitely be looking at a soundbar setup that I could hook everything into the tv with and just use eARC to run it all through the soundbar. Thanks for all you guys do! Kristi, I LOVE LOVE LOVE having all the links to the things you guys mention in your reviews... thank you for all of that work EVERY TIME!

Well, to answer your question, I could have chosen to answer your question in a more direct fashion however I'd rather choose a different approach here.
Been following your channel a long time now and you have adopted a different route to reviewing the products compared to the ones that you used to review couple of years ago.
You have opened yourself up to new technology based all-in-one home theatre products, soundbars etc..
So, now, to answer your question, like you mentioned in one of your reviews, even when it comes to two-channel bookshelf speakers, hi-fi systems, powered-speakers is the future.
Similarly, in home theatre field I think this is the kind of future we are looking forward to.
Polk Maginifi mini AX is an excellent starting point for any HT enthusiast.
For a more hardcore enthusiast, I would probably suggest Sony HT A9. I know you were pretty impressed with that system too 🙂
Similarly, in the two channel set-up, one can probably start things off with SVS Prime Wireless Pro Powered speakers and then work their way up to KEF LS50 Wireless II and then given the space and budget could go up to LS60s.
This is the future aka Future-fi.
10-20 yrs ago, people had more space to play with and discrete systems made total sense.
Hell, I still have discrete two channel set-up and discrete Home theatre setup.
But in the last couple of years, i have started leaning more towards powered/active speaker setups and Magnifi-like setups for HT solutions. Simply because space is a limitation we are all facing now.
Hope that answers your question. It was an interesting and a practical one 👍✌️
As always, excellent review buddy 🙏 keep them coming. God bless ✌️

Arguably one of my favourite reviews of yours, just because of the affordability factor. I have a dedicated room full of speakers etc. But I've always loved Soundbars. Used to have the old Philips Fidelio with detachable wireless side speakers and have just always had a week spot for the form factor.
Because they're now getting so good, the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) is also a lot higher.
I like this a lot, but my question would be to you: do you prefer this kind of solution, or the Sony A9 kind of solution with respect to virtualizing. (Not comparing the 2 accrual systems, as there's a 4x price difference.

I actually switched back to a discrete 5.1 system but with a twist.
I have the Enclave CineHome II. Bought this used at a good deal and it is game changer for me because they are wireless.
The sound is impressive and easy to set up. These are WISA certified speakers. I don't have cut outs or subwoofer drops in this system which was a problem when using my LG SN10YG soundbar with the rear speaker kit.
Using any WISA speakers, you can upgrade to a 7.1 or 5.1.2 Atmos setup but I have not tried this yet (considering the cost right now for additional speakers).
Also, my 2020 LG tv is WISA certified but I prefer using the system with ARC/eARC.
So I'm curious if you have thoughts on WISA speakers and the Soundsend/Axiim transmitter.
Platin Audio just announced their 5.1.2 wireless Atmos system which is interesting as well but expensive!
Thanks for the content by the way! 🙌

The virtual surround bit is a moot point considering the original uses their patented SDA technology and supports Dolby 5.1. Meaning it already has decent virtual surround. The true leg up the AX has is the wireless satellite speakers that turn it into a true surround system. Or at the very least a hybrid.

Sound bars are here to stay, like it or not. I think it's incredibly satisfying to have someone marvel at how good a sound bar sounds given its respective size. I also think a lot of people would be hard pressed to discern a difference between discrete audio channels and an all in one solution like a sound bar.
What I think sound bars offer more than anything is a higher acceptability factor from significant others. I can tell you my wife hates the look of speakers. She doesn't even go into my basement because she hates looking at them. 🤷 I've added my sound bars on my other TV's, though, by using added mounting brackets to the TV wall mount and they just become an addition to the TV. She doesn't mind this view at all.
I don't know where I'm going with this comment, so I'll cut it short. Sound bars are a fantastic invention that pumps out way higher fidelity audio in a much more space friendly package and for that reason, I think they aren't going anywhere and people shouldn't turn their noses up at them, but instead root for continued innovation in that product sector.

  • @duprie37

It's a big improvement generally on the previous Magnifi Mini which seriously lacked timbre especially with music, but while it's nice that it can decode Dolby Digital, Atmos and DTS: X there's nothing really very "surround" about the setup. It creates an impressive soundstage for your screen area but the rears and ceiling channels are indistinguishable from the front channels except for a non-specific effect of big room ambiance. Still a really nice sound for such a compact unit but don't expect the sound of a helicopter flying overhead to magically come from somewhere above you for example despite what Polk advertises, or you'll just be disappointed.

Not to ride the fence on this one but they’re both impressive for different reasons. For someone like me, I kitted out my office (work from home so I’m in there ALOT) with a 55” C1 oled with my Klipsch the fives and a Klipsch sub. In that room it’s an amazing combo that truly rocks and is amazing for movies. That said now that I’m starting the living room I’m at a loss… I’m not a baller or anything but I want a nice, versatile media experience. Gaming, movies, music and sports. Every time I think I’m set there’s something else that seems like a better option lol. As of now I was pretty set on a Polk reserve system with two R700s two R900 height modules two r200 surrounds the R400 center and an svs 1000 for the hip hop and r&b as well as feeling like Godzilla is stomping through my living room lol. That said I was set on last years Klipsch reference line (hard to beat money wise), set on a focal chora system similar to the Polk and even the Sony AH-9 set up seemed tempting. There are so many good things out these days, it’s easy to not really know where to go, especially when starting from scratch (no av receiver yet either and that’s a whole other wormhole lol) basically it’s all impressive haha.

While it’s certainly easy to understand the appeal - particularly if you want music throughout the house and anywhere in the yard within range of your wifi - the sonics of even the ARC and Sub are, how can is say diplomatically - meh? While his 75” Sony X80 series TV deceivers a pretty decent picture, what I’ve heard from his rig so far hasn’t inspired my to replace my 7.2 HT system.
Thanks to a couple of your earlier reviews, I recently acquired a BlueSound Node for an upstairs system that is now streaming only, and so far no complaints; although at a certain age (70) I’m finding there’s a much longer learning curve to all the functionality - such as wireless streaming from shared PC/Mac libraries - it has to offer.

Even for music. It has a unique sound stage, definitely not mono, I find the sound stage for music is very wide. Now I'm sorely tempted to get the AX too. However it's currently selling for AUD$830 RRP here in Australia, so... dunno. Might wait a bit until there's more Atmos streaming content.

The original Polk Mini was the most impressive consumer electronics products I have ever owned (considering value and all). The fact that it is to 30% the width seemingly doesn’t limit the stage at all.
I have the AX in another room and it likely ties the original ‘wow’ record. I would note that $449 is a great value.
BUT the original mini has been around for a few years and can be had for insane prices ($150-175ish or even less) which is clearly significantly bellow half the price of the AX.
Proof that this (our hosts) is a solid marriage would be the better half chiming in toward the end in defense of the original mini. it DOES do MUCH more than simply enhance dialogue. The subwoofers are identical and both do exactly as described regarding depending on the sub for deeper midrange.
The midrange-sub integration was a very very intelligent point about both systems that I have certainly observed owning both….I just never really thought about it in that way. Party in the back? Not this time. Sub to the front.
I’ve Banged with Olufsen and Ambeoed at a friends home. Over the years I’ve Viziod my budget, multi-roomed w/ Sonos Barbara and 7.1 book tower shelved with Onkyo and cables.
No need for a paragraph to say ‘I’ve heard fancy shit.’ I guess I couldn’t help myself. Both of these sound great.
Born and raised in the Silicon Valley I hate supporting Amazon in all ways. With that said if you see the original Magnifi Mini used (as it’s been around long enough for this to be common) and in ‘very good’ or ‘good’ condition…..regardless of your tax bracket status the football and wireless sub at $170ish is MADNESS. Like amphetamine fueled midwestern used car salesmen tv commercial CRAZY DEALS CLICK NOW WE GIVEN IT AWAY level value.
It’s that great. Vizio can’t make a decent TV but they do nice things with budget soundbars. However that $150-250 spent toward either Polk is exponentially more potent, quality, versatile and like a weight training football of some kind. Don’t blow out your shoulder.
Good review. Remember just because they send it doesn’t mean you can’t say it sucks. You know there is a sponsored review disease going around. So far so good. 👍🏻

This review was incredibly helpful and convinced me to purchase the Mini AX. I watched "The Fall Guy" on it last night, and the experience was fantastic. I had read that the subwoofer was bass-heavy, and that is definitely true. I have mine set to "Movie" mode with the bass adjusted to -2. To manage the downward-firing bass and avoid disturbing my neighbors, I also bought the "Auralex Acoustics SubDude-II Subwoofer Acoustic Isolation Platform" from Amazon. This is an absolute must if you’re renting an apartment, and I believe it also helps direct the sound more effectively.

I like it, it's a little weird with not turning on sometimes with the power on the tv and constantly I have to change inputs or turn it off when it loses Dolby processing which happens often. Kinda of annoying but not terrible. I turned the bass down 2 notches and same with the dialogue. Just seemed a bit tipped up on both for me, especially the bass. Probably because my main room I use a sealed box sub (REL) and the polk seemed a bit much out of the box setting. Other than that for the price I enjoy it, fits well in that room with the small form factor.

Try getting a top Netflix plan or whatever service that supports that audio and you should be able to hear it.
