YOU, are the ONLY one to mention the nutrition lost, as time goes by because they consume their sac. where all the nutrients are.
That's probably a pretty important fact to know.

Mine worked fine at the start but the hatching rate went down fast.
Turned out that the cat was drinking from the center with the shrimp too!
Mesh over the hole fixed it.

I have 2 of them, I run an air lin with a stone through the little spout. I can keep adding eggs for at least a week before changing the water.

This will be perfect for me. Mine just arrived. I got myself a baby betta fish on December 30th. I got a hatchery for the purpose of being able to feed him frequently. This is the perfect size. He is the only one I’m feeding bbs to, so this is just what I need.
Thanks for this video. I wanted to try BBS for quite a while now but don't have the time to set things up and seemed a lot of work. These though is perfect. I only have 3 tanks, and really easy to use.

I found this kit a few months ago and have been using it weekly since. I do not breed fish, but my tetras and dwarf rainbow's go CRAZY when i feed bbs. I thought about hatching bbs before but kept putting it off because of the setup needed. Not that its hard but this does make it SO much easier that i actually do it. It isnt cheap but if you have to feed fry or just want to give your smaller adult fish a tasty treat now and then it is definitely worth it in my opinion.

I just ordered one for my birthday. My plan is to start hatching the shrimp, and freeze them as I go. I would think it could work.
Finally, a very easy, simple way to raise BBS. The size and amount is just right for me...only have a 40 gallon breeder and 2 - 10 gallons. Have a lot of nano fish, endlers, and fry and when I do have fry, they seem not to get much to eat. I have been using First Bites from Hikari for my livebeares, but I know live food is better. I just got this kit in the mail and will be setting it up soon. Have a bunch of Angelfish fry that are in the wiggler stage. Thanks for a great video on this product and the fact that you said about losing nutrition after a certain time. Never heard that before! Maybe this company can come up with a similar system for microworms! :)

It’s terrible for hatching. I had nothing for 6 days! Then hardly any. However, the baffles in the “hatchery” work extremely well stopping shells and eggs contaminating the hatched shrimp. I do suggest to anyone reading this to buy one but instead of adding eggs use it as a separator. Hatch in a bottle with a bubbler then once hatched. Fill the inner rings to the top with water then add the hatched shrimp, cysts and shells to the OUTER ring, top up the water from the centre, put the lid on and in 10 mins the centre will be full of shrimp, no eggs. Good product, wrong purpose.

Good hint about a bright light over the cup. I put one over about an hour or so before harvesting and the catch is far greater than from ambient light. Great invention!
RICK LETT Yes! I now keep a small LED light for a nano aquarium just above it...harvesting is a snap that way. I wish I had known about this 30 years ago! 👍
Thanks Rus. This thing is a no brainer! Set up at 4:30 pm yesterday with tepid water and a pinch of baking soda. Left overnight with a small desk lamp and had a cupful of nauplii by 10am this morning!
😊👍 It’s fast, isn’t it? I took mine indoors and set it on a flexwatt heat pad so the water is at about 80 F. Wit is next to a gecko vivarium so it gets plenty of light. Works like a charm! 👍
2 Q's. 1. I live in a cold climate and use a heat mat beneath the incubator. What is the optimum temperature for hatching brine shrimp?
For decades the advice has been to aerate artemia cultures. But now we don't need aeration? Has anyone done any yield measurement of aerated versus non-aerated cultures?
Just set this very same hatchery up today. Hopefully I have success and can feed my freshwater community tank live food for the first time.

I’ve used this kit. One of the easiest kits I’ve used and I’ve tried a bunch.
I bought it last year but really started to use it this year when my guppies have birth
I made my own much cruder version by putting a black plastic container with a 1" hole in the side middway down, then put this "inner" container in a wider square white tupperware container. Fill with water and put the eggs in the black container, when they hatch they swim through the hole into the brighter outer container, if you put the container in a windowsill they tend to crowd at one corner and you can easily siphon them out. It worked but I don't have young fish now so stopped using it. You can make a few of these and whatever size you want depending on how many shrimp you need. I also want to say that a lot of young fish will eat the decapsulated eggs of the brine shrimp so you might not need to hatch them at all. There is very little nutritional difference between the two. I was surprised to see my young killi fish ate the eggs with gusto so I stopped hatching them, just make sure they are decapsulated, meaning outer hard shell removed.
MoreChannelNoise Nice DIY version! I have decapsulated the eggs before, as well as purchased descapsulated cysts for use with my fish. The company I bought this hatchery from sells both hatchable and nonviable decapsulated cysts. 👍

Did you ever find a heat mat with a thermostat that's reliable? Looking for suggestions here.
Theres a port for adding an airstone/diffuser since tumbling is supposed offer more successful hatchlings and less waste of eggs, but as mentioned.. movement may cause eggs to mix with the harvest area, Feeding your brineshrimp the infusoria (sold n many pet stores with BS eggs) and in a few weeks you can have young adult Seamonkeys, I mean brinshrimp. You could get a goldfish bowl to raise your newly hatched brineshrimp, feed them and see how fast they mature and their size increases greatly in a few weeks, they can be amusing.

So i only have two or 3 tanks that would “need” brine shrimp. I don’t need a whole bunch and I hatched my first batch last night and I hated not knowing if the eggs had settled enough and if I was feeding my fish shells or not. I’m 100% getting this

I use this for my apisto and betta fry and this thing is an absolute lifesaver. Also keeping the brine shrimp eggs apparently makes them last longer.

Aquarimax Pets in the freezer. I kept them in the refrigerator for a couple months but after that I read somewhere that freezing the eggs makes them last longer and hatch quicker. I would just keep them in the fridge for now. Which animals did you intend to feed with these?
Aquatinsect Ah, yes, if you’re going to store them long-term, the freezer is better. I am using them up pretty quickly though. I am feeding mine to Neolamprologus multifasciatus (multies) and Poeclia wingei (Blue Star Endlers)

What is the little channel sticking out of the main case for? It doesn't seem big enough for pouring.
I think ithas something to do with how the lid opens. When the channel is aligned with a certain part of the lid, it opens more readily, other than that, I am not sure.
Any interested.., you can buy Infusoria and feed that to the brine shrimp (babies - adult) and over a couple weeks you will have large brine shrimp that are a great food for your fish and Seahorses and Pipefish.
L 1 I have raised them to adulthood in the past, a fun project. I would like to do a larger-scale saltwater pool outside for them at some point. In the past, I have also collected them in the Great Salt Lake.
I'm thinking this would be perfect for me when I put crabs in my palidarium once it is finished.

In the summer , just outside. In the cooler months, I use a reptile heat Matt with adjustable temperature and an LED lamp above for light. Works like a charm!

You could drain them in a coffee filter, rinse them in fresh water, and freeze them for later use…or just wait a few hours and feed your fish again. 👍
So do you mean that in order to harvest more brine shrimp, it is required to get additional incubators? I thought I could just add more scoops to the plate. Also, should we freeze all the remaining cysts and shrimp in the plate and then put them back in the plate ? If so, would they take about a day to keep hatching or can we just collect whatever the drain catches after the brine shrimp unfreeze to give them to fish? Thanks.
@@augukern9708 to some extent, you can add more scoops, but at a certain point, there will he too many and hatch/survival rate will be poor.
Whatever remains after 48 hours is of little value, so I just toss it. It would be difficult to freeze due to the salt content.

I have matured them several times, generally the best thing IME is to use a large aquarium with marine grade salt mix and light aeration. The density of yield isn’t great, though

Joe wright Those temperatures will slow the hatching process, but if you use an incandescent bulb above it, that will help to warm the water. I use a reptile heating pad on a rheostat to heat mine in the winter.

SolZ_King 26 it depends on the temperature and the freshness of the eggs, and there is some individual variation in eggs themselves, but most of the eggs generally hatch within 24 hours if the temperature is around 77-80 F.
It's cold outside right now eventhough its sunny outside in California. Will the eggs hatch right away? Is it even necessary to use baking soda in the kit?
Kathleen Monsegue The sun will probably warm the black container somewhat, but unless it reaches about 78-80 F, it will probsbly take a while. Baking soda is not strictly necessary, but it can help increase hatch rate.
I put a heating pad on low wrapped in a plastic bag, under the unit and it cut the hatch time from 24 to 12 hours.
I use a reptile heat mat on a rheostat when I use it indoors, it speeds up the hatch too. :)

Great question! Brine shrimp cannot eat for the first 24 hours or so after hatching, so feeding them phytoplankton at that age is not effective.. it can work with older shrimp though.

I like to aim for between 78 and 82 F, though it still works at somewhat cooler temperatures…just more slowly

No circulation is required. The high surface area helps keep oxygen in the water. 82 degrees will help them hatch more quickly than cooler temps, but mid to high 70s are fine too.
Hi Rus, I had an air line in mine for several weeks, I found the separation much better once I removed it and used the hatchery "still" It just moves too much water with an air line. Your results may vary.....

LittleImpaler honestly, at least during the summer, it takes 18-20 hours. Then I get subsequent hatches for until about 48 hours if I let it go that long.

Once they are past the nauplius stage, yes, that can enrich them.
For this we dont need air bubbles at all? How is that still working without air bubbles? I heard this kit is only usable when I want seperating them, but not to hatch them
I have never used air bubbles with mine…the high surface area and shallow water do the trick. It works great for hatching and separating the nauplii from the cysts in my experience.
is it ok to use iodized salt?
Moayad Sewar I have never actually tried iodized salt. Sea salt, marine salt, and rock salt all work. I have even used baking soda instead of salt to hatch them, and it works too! Of course, they need marine salt to grow to adulthood.
Can I use unscented undyed Epson salt?
I am. It sure about that…I have actually used plain baking soda successfully though
How do you clean the mess of the harvesting cup. Because after a while it gets clogged.

You can feed shrimp,within the first 24 hours for good nutrition. They are edible but much less nutritious after that.
Hi there. I just recieved my baby brine shrimp hatchery, and was wondering if I placed it on top of my 50 gallon fish tank with the l.e.d light over it, of the eggs will hatch? The light generates a lot of heat. And leaving it outside in the sunlight didnt work. It is night time now in southern California, so there wont be any light for it throughout the night if l were to leave it outside in the backyard. So I tossed out the contents and started over lol. Do you think the l.e.d on top of it, and the room temp of my house, will help the brine shrimp eggs to hatch?

Light can improve hatch rate, but is not as necessary as you might think. I get great hatches without additional light, but for the best possible hatch rate, I leave the lid off for the first few hours, with a light overhead. That seems to boost hatching quite well! This video was filmed in summer, so the temps were warm enough. Im the winter, my house gets cold, so I put this hatchery on a heat mat set so that the water is about 77-80 F. Works like a charm!
So I really have a question and I hope you can respond but when I put my eggs in, they leaked into the other chambers and I tried to suction whatever wasn’t supposed to be in places out but I may have overfilled.
How bad is this going to effect this or should I dump this out ASAP and start a new batch?

As long as they are not floating in the egg collecting cup, you are probably fine

Obviously works but I have read everywhere that brine shrimp need light in the first couple of hours to activate certain chemicals before they will hatch. Does anyone know how this hatchery works as eggs are left in darkness. Just curious,
James sails I was surprised when I learned about this hatchery too...it didn’t make sense, but it worked. I know light can be a cue for many crustacean eggs to hatch. I guess other cues can suffice in its absence. 👍

In the video at the end you dipped in clean water, then poured in transfer water... How do you do a partial harvest?
miadaisys when you harvest, you can gently pour some of them back before removing the cup to harvest later.
So dip basket in clean water and pour out amount want and put rest back in container??
miadaisys before you rinse them, just release what you don’t want to harvest directly into the hatchery.

You shouldn't worry too much about the salt. It can even be used to treat many fish diseases in larger amounts. Small traces of salt with the brine shrimp shouldn't be a problem.
