For anyone wondering. This video is 3 years old it was my first essay video I had ever done and i re-released it with a few tweaks. If you didnt finish the video just want you to know i love this game also i dont hate ds2. This video is to talk about why its so flawed and what are the issues. The last 7 minutes are about how much this game is still a great game and is better the 90% of other games. Just in my personal opinion its just not a great from software game but a decent souls like. Also its ok to love this game and see its flaws.
@IAmVehement I dunno what parts it falls short on cus I keep coming back to it more than the other 2 😅 For me the ranking is based on the order I played them, so DS3 is a 10, DS2 is a 9 and DS1 is an 8. They are all so similar yet so different from one another. Oh and I also love Archthrones, it's probably the best, but it's so short and there isnt much to do now that I've completed it.
I'm sick and tired of people creating clickbait videos with "wHy dOeS EvErYOnE hAtE DS2" as their title. Yes, dark souls 2 has its flaws, but the general consensus has been for years and years that it's a fantastic game with great lore, great pvp, great covenants and great build diversity.
Dark Souls 2 is the bread heel of the series. Everyone touches it but no one wants it on their sandwich. On the serious, though, I think the different engine, focus on the Undead curse, the game being too big for its own good at times, and some of the odder bosses make it FEEL like a spinoff. The dodge being tied to ADP is just an inconvenience, the animations are stiff and wooden. It's not a bad game; in fact, it's probably the deepest game there is, mechanically. It's just presented like a 3rd party knockoff and having to deal with silly dodge mechanics, odd character movement, and stiff animations through the whole thing make it hard to consume.
Lucatiel is the best NPC in the Souls games. DS2 has a lot of flaws, and yes, more than the other 2 Souls games do, but it, at least in its original form with the DLC was pretty great. Scholar edition is complete and utter crap though, i grant you that.
Tanimura saved DS2. Souls games no longer need Miyazaki to be successful. Lies of P example. We saw Tanimura's true vision with Elden Ring, and Miyazaki knew it. I found the world of DS2 very interesting. Drangleic sounds "dreamy". Even in the opening cinematic, there is a reference to Alice in Wonderland. I loved Drangleic, considering how vast and disparate lands it covers, Drangleic is truly amazing. DS2 is great in terms of atmosphere. The sun of Majula, the star-covered sky and waving sea of Heide, the Blue Full Moon of Lost Bastille, the seemingly post-apocalyptic landscapes of Earthen Peak, the hellish tones of Iron Keep, the completely dark and stormy atmosphere of Castle Drangleic... I don't know about you, but I love beautiful landscapes in games. I'll take it. I have a lot more beautiful images in DS2 than in DS1. Other than Firelink, Anor Londo and Ash Lake, I don't remember a single location that looked visually good in DS1. But DS2 had plenty of it. What do you mean when you say that the NPCs in DS2 do not have the Lore depth like in the first game? The 2 best written characters in the Dark Souls trilogy are in this game. King Vendrick and Aldia. I have never forgotten the Emerald Herald, Lucatiel of Mirrah, Shalquoir the sweet cat, Gavlan, the Rat King, Vendrick, Aldia and Forlorn. Each of them has great Lore. I think there are enough good NPCs. Many of the areas in DS2 are interactive. If you just move randomly through the areas, the game can turn into hell for you. I found the areas in DS2 very interesting and fun. Of course, there are certain exceptions that everyone agrees on. Black Gulch, Iron Keep, Shrine of Amana, Sir Alonne Runback, Blue Smelter Demon runback, Charriot Runback. Other than these, there are generally no problems in the sections. You need to try to learn how to interact with your environment, that's all. Also DS2's graphics are better than DS1, only areas of the game that don't have enough lighting look worse. We should not forget the downgrade that DS2 ate. Additionally, DSR emerged after SOTFS. ADP sucks yes. However, it is very easy to level up in this game, you can easily make 20 ADP and this will get you closer to DS1 i-frames. You won't have much of a problem other than mimic hitboxes. The game would have been better without ADP. However, I think there is a bigger problem than the existence of ADP, and it is that the game does not inform you of its existence or what it does. This is unacceptable. I agree that DS2 felt artificially difficult due to the abundance of enemies and their placement. But I played both the original game and the Sotfs version. I think everything is fairer in the SOTFS version because the game usually gives you signs by which you can spot the enemies. I proceeded by paying attention to my surroundings and had no problems throughout the game except Shrine of Amana and Frigit Outskirts. So I think the game is still "fair enough". Regarding bosses; There are the same amount of "good" bosses in DS1 and DS2. You may notice this after replaying both games. However, DS2 has a greater amount of "bad" bosses. That's why DS2 is weaker in terms of overall boss quality. There is no boss of the quality of Ornstein and Smough in the main game. Actually, Darklurker could be a candidate for this, but it has a terrible runback and arena. Still, I think the "good" bosses in DS2 are at least as beautiful as the "good" bosses in DS1, and some are even more beautiful than the ones in DS1. I always have Sir Alonne>Artorias, Fume Knight>Manus, Ivory King>Kalaamet. However, I agree that DS2 would be a better game without some bosses. The accessibility, build variety and life improvements this game offers are things I couldn't find in DS1 and DS3. My order is DS3>DS2>DS1. But I always find DS2 unique among them for these reasons.
Dark Souls 2 with The scholar of the second sin mod, is amazing. It really highlights the actual problems of the game. That not being the core assets but level and enemy setup. In the standard versions every area is crowded with monsters in an unnatural amount just to make it artificially harder. As well as s being a stat, stamina consumption being ridiculously high and lock before u can roll after an attack being way too long. The Scholar of the second sin mod makes the bosses and enemies harder in general (faster, more hp) but fixes all the issues mentioned above. I used that mod for my first playthrough, just so I dont even have a bad version of DS2 in my head xD
Ayo, I never knew that at 6:20 that you could backstab the giants. Besides me pointing that out I mean to be honest there's not a single area I dread going through in this game compared to the others(yes I have played every other game apart from Sekiro) like to name a few areas in the others I hated right off the bat would be lower tower latria in demon's souls, sen's fortress in dark souls 1, irithyll of the boreal valley(hopefully I spelled that correctly) in dark souls 3, and probably caelid in elden ring. Can't name one in 2 unless it's a dlc area as I hated going through each dlc but I enjoyed the base game so I'm in the minority there I know but the areas in dark souls 2's base game aren't that bad. I'll actually admit something, I have actually died many more times to the red smelter demon in iron keep than from all the knights, one of the main things most complain about. Personally I didn't like how most classes doesn't start off with a shield and that fall damage is much more unfair in this game but that's about where my negatives end honestly. This comment however is NOT me saying the other games are bad by any means but I much prefer playing dark souls 2 over any other in the series.
Yea you can backstab the Giants I figured it out by accident on my first playthrough. I think the whole series has at least one or 2 terrible areas per game. I just found that ds2 felt like they were trying to hard to make the areas that I mentioned annoying. I however also feel that in ds3 that farren keep was also intentionally made to be miserable to deal with. I personally like sens fortress but it is also an area intentionally meant to be annoying. I just personally dont like a lot of areas in ds2 a bit more.
@IAmVehement I guess different things are annoying to different people and that's okay. You probably could've just been under leveled or just used to the combat and movement from the other games. I personally couldn't enjoy the newer combat of the newer souls games even though I did beat dark souls 3 multiple times but for me it just felt like fromsoft just designed enemies and bosses to just literally spam attacks at you for difficulty purposes but again it's just how I felt and I can tolerate playing it again but I prefer to stick to demon's souls through dark souls 2 over and over again. Everyone's different in the end after all
I think the best example of poor the gameplay is just showing someone the enemy agro range for Iron Keep. I just finished my SL1 run and nothing made me or my friend more mad than walking two steps and every single enemy in that map just makes a full on run to your character. I know the people that like the game like to turn a blind eye to a lot of the valid criticism but this game is far from perfect.
Iron keep is an extremely frustrating area I can't even imagine sl1 run through this game. I agree some people don't want to see the issues and ignore them.
@@IAmVehement just did it at sl1, its a cake walk if u dont run around and aggro the whole area and then complain for the enemy spam when its the lack of skill and observation of the player that makes it frustrating
No one truly hates DS2, we just have such high expectations for it being a souls game. If it was a complete standalone game, from a different studio, everyone would love it! It’s so ethereal and dream like, I absolutely love DS2 and its atmosphere. It’s like a long lost dream that you’re trying to remember
as far as dex weapons that are actually fast and have good dps, the thrusting swords would be your best bet. The katana are also really good, but mostly because of their absurd counter damage.
Misleading title. DS2 might be a little more divisive compare to the other From games, but it is NOT hated. Unless my eyes are deceiving me and it doesn't have a user score of 4.55 out of 5 on the PS store and an 'Very Positive' rating of 87% (85% for SotFS) on Steam.
in the last weeks i play and watch lots of DS2 and became aware of the differences between DS 2 and DS2:SOTFS. I am happy i still try the first version of DS2.
Actually just decided to go through the whole series again. Just finished DS 1 and am on to DS2. My character from 10 years ago, I think. Is beautiful and level 200. I loved DS2 so much, I can’t remember which NG I was on, but I’m restarting and it feels like a new game again.
Yea sorry people who don’t like ds2 need to get good. Half the complaints I see is just people needing to get good. I like all 3 games tho my favourite is ds1 then 2 then 3
My criticism isn't that it's too hard it's actually very easy. They tried really hard to bring fake difficulty with overwhelming the player with more enemies then necessary and level design that's designed to be "hard" ds 2 is actually the easiest from software game they have ever made other than demons souls.
Yes I could theoretically bait out every enemy for every boss run I make to make it easier, but would it be fun ? Absolutely not quite the opposite actually, some of you forget the goal of a game isn't just "it's hard isn't it ?" But to be enjoyable
So, not liking something means you're not good? It's not possible to just have a different opinion? What a shock, another "git gud" commentor with comprehension struggles...
base on my experience. ds2 is the easiest in all fromsoft games. despite having many enemies. its not so bad, infact other games are guilty on the same thing. example the dukes archives, the catacombs, blighttown, undead parish, heck even in the dlc. what im trying to say is, its really manageable if the player knows whats he/she is doing. the adp is really the bad part because its never been clear to player of what it means. i wont say hitbox on ds2 is bad infact all the soulsbourne games are the same. also people whine alot about the ds2 runbacks, uhhh.. isnt that the main problem from demons souls and ds1? there are like 4 bad runbacks i remember in ds2. the chariot, blue smelter demon, lud and zallen and sir alonne.
I totally agree that ds1 has really bad runbacks as well. I've still not played demons soul but from what I've seen it's the worst offender. Also ds1 and ds2 has a few bad areas too ds1 more so are unfinished areas but there is still blighttown which is 100% finished and 100% bad where I feel ds2 just has bad levels and more of them. Not to say there's no good areas there is. Every souls game has at least 1 or 2 bad areas in them I just don't mention it here because it's not the topic of the video. Also I think hitboxes are more of a problem in ds2 then the others but they all have there issues.
DS 2 needs a polished remake. Another engine (DS3/ER) maybe no iFrames on stats and soul memory (just not impacting pvp/coop) its just confusing even after watching/searching how it works.
I think ds2 aged pretty well but I'd honestly say that ds1 is first evolution of this formula and ds3 is where the game really came into its own. Ds2 stands by itself as a turning point in the series. I come off really negative in this video but I do still really like the game but it's far from flawless.
I love how many people in the comments can't comprehend that somebody would have a different opinion than them. Someone disliking something that they like? Not possible, just call them bad at the game and make no logical counter points. Great video BTW!

Greetings brother, how are you, a pleasure to watch your videos a favor what headphones do you recommend to play Shooter fps games but above all to hear the footsteps more clearly? Thank you
I made this 3 years ago it was my first commentary/essay video I had ever made. I was learning. I re-uploaded it because I still was happy with what I said but my delivery wasn't perfect.
I’ve played bloodborne and sekiro (loved both and platiunumd) and decided to play the souls series next. I loved and have a great appreciation for ds1 and am currently on my play through of ds2. While the game has its moments, I’m also looking forward to platinuming ds2 and being done with it for, potentially, forever
I agree but I understand why people don’t. Here is my take: I can IMMEDIATELY feel when DS1 fell apart because of the rush to finish. I hardly ever finish the game. I enjoy making a new character, playing up to Anor Londo, then I lose interest. And for how much people talk about how great the areas in DS1 are, I have to strongly disagree. They are short and usually pretty meh. DS2, yes has a lot of enemies. But I feel like the reason why is to hinder people from just running past everything to get to bosses. And part of that is probably also because or why you can warp to every bonfire (which people obviously love and was used in DS3 also). My 2 biggest complaints about DS2 is the movement being more constrained directionally, and yes I can concede that the textures are copy paste in a lot of places. But there is not a single level where I think, boy they just really didn’t have time to finish this. Whereas literally 50% of DS1 I say that and it totally loses me. This guy including ash lake and the great hollow in the “memorable areas” baffles me. They both COULD have been cool, but they felt like backrooms levels. And if you’re gonna complain about the gutter and not literally all of tomb of the giants, that’s wild. Think about DS1: everybody gets the master key to skip blight town, does anyone actually enjoy tomb of the giants? What about lost izaleth? Centipede demon and fire sage were super fun? Bed of chaos was awesome? Does a good (again I’d argue half good but I digress) DLC with Artorias make up for the entire second act being plain white bread? DS2 had fully developed levels - period. And then released amazing DLC content. They took risks and not all of them landed. A lot did. And to the people that complain about places like Shrine of Amana - look how easy it is to get levels. And to upgrade weapons. And to re-allocate your levels. It gives you all the tools you could ever need to make that level a cake walk. And it’s fun to have a high level character that can be a strength powerhouse but also use a bow for one single level to snipe magic people. It’s fine if you don’t like that, but it was a new thing they tried. It was cool. DS2 is unironically my favorite of the 3 and my most played. Yeah it’s flawed but they all are. To me it felt more like an old school rpg like Gauntlet or something where you play a level and kill every enemy. Not just sprint past everything to get to a boss.
@@drewvaldez you summarized my feelings for DS1 and DS2 excellently! I agree with everything you said from areas, to bosses, and to how DS2 really felt like an old school RPG, which I absolutely adore! You my good sir, have made the ultimate and best nuanced take I have seen yet in the comments section. \[T]/
Can't speak for everyone but I own this game, have tried to play it multiple times, and it's just not a good time for me. The main reason is how dodge frames are tied to a Stat, which is just bad game design. On top of now taking damage where you normally would have avoided it just because of menu numbers, the feedback on the hits is so minute that I often don't realize I've been hit at all. This combines into an issue where I'm focused on combat, in the zone, dodging and not seeing any visual indicator that the dodge isn't working, but my health bar is getting chunked down anyway. So for me, taking one of the series (and genre, for that matter) staples, dodge rolling, and making it have a Stat requirement to function normally is an absolute game breaker. It's like someone wrote a really good story, best story ever written, but every time you turn a page, you get a paper cut.
I really think that agility/adaptability was one of the weirdest and unusual decisions they could have made. It just shows they were trying way to hard to mess with the player.
@IAmVehement Right, like instead of just relying on good game design and a few jump scares, they tried to make the mechanics of the game itself work against you. And even then, they don't commit; a few Stat points in ADP and you've nullified the disadvantage, so why even bother with it?
Tbh when I made this video back in 2021 I realized I missed lucatiel but I only realized it after the video was made. I didnt add much to the video when re-releasing it this time around I only cut stuff that wasn't necessary. I do think lucatiel is a good character but I still think most characters are kind of forgettable.
That you don't remember characters, does not mean others don't. When you say "I don't feel immersed", is that objective? And Solaire is just a fan-favourite, it doesn't make him a good character that the fanbase loves him. I personally more like Andre and Giant who wish you luck all the time. If you replay DS1 today don't be too mad, because game aged terribly and it's not how you remember it. So saying that DS2 has blank areas (why?) compared to old aged looking game, and with much more graphically advanced one (DS3) is really weird.
I just didn't connect personally with the characters in ds2 and no it's not objective it's subjective. Ds1 characters stuck with me but not anywhere near the way ds3 connected with me but I didn't wanna bring up ds3 to much in this video because I was looking at it from the lens of a sequel rather then a part of a whole series. This video was made in 2021 so before elden ring but I still wouldn't have used it as much example I really just wanted to draw a direct comparison to ds1. I personally think from soft landed better in the future games like ds3 and bloodborne and that ds1 is still a great game but isn't holding up as well these days. To answer immersion I just didn't find the world in ds2 to feel much believability in the world not that it's not interesting I just wasn't pulled in like I am in every other game in the series.
@@IAmVehement But how is this objective? How is this not just your feelings at the time? It's just your words and feelings against other ones, who feel the opposite, where is the objectivity in this?

They tried really hard to bring fake difficulty with overwhelming the player with more enemies then necessary and level design that's designed to be "hard" ds 2 is actually the easiest from software game they have ever made other than demons souls.
In ds1 the weapon durability was fine and unless you were cursed your health was kinda fine. The hit boxes are not great either.
Yes I could theoretically bait out every enemy for every boss run I make to make it easier, but would it be fun ? Absolutely not quite the opposite actually, some of you forget the goal of a game isn't just "it's hard isn't it ?" But to be enjoyable
Git gud @@IAmVehement
Another engine (DS3/ER)
maybe no iFrames on stats and soul memory (just not impacting pvp/coop) its just confusing even after watching/searching how it works.
I think if it got a rerelease with those issues it would help a decent bit. It still has its other issues but it would still be a good start
Dog about to cry 15:44
Dark Souls 2 ages like a fine wine, the older it gets, the better it is meanwhile Dark Souls 1 is like milk
Saludos hermano. Cómo éstas, un gusto ver tus videos ¿cuál audífonos me recomiendas para Gaming sobre todo que tengan sonido envolvente para escuchar los pasos con más claridad?
I breezed through shrine of amana on my first playthrough, I think it's just a skill issue man
Greetings brother, how are you, a pleasure to watch your videos a favor what headphones do you recommend to play Shooter fps games but above all to hear the footsteps more clearly? Thank you
Steel series artcis nova 5-7 or the hyper x cloud 2. I also recommend the Logitech g pro x headset as well.
Turned the video off once this dude said he hasn’t played the old hunter dlc lmao
Should be illegal.
You summed up my opinion really nice with "It's not a bad game its just not a good Souls game"
It really is a decent game it just doesn't stack up well against the rest
Goddamnit you're right, but this has to be the whiniest commentary ever. Does nobody love you?
I made this 3 years ago it was my first commentary/essay video I had ever made. I was learning. I re-uploaded it because I still was happy with what I said but my delivery wasn't perfect.
The 2 worse thing imo are the reduced hp (so you are punished for trying) and weapon breaking waaaaay too fast. You hit 9 enemies breaks.
I really dislike the reduced hp system in this game. I think that ds3/ds1 do it much better. Also yea the durability is quite low on most weapons.
DS2 was much better than 1
Ahhhhh HELL NAH
If you're a masochist
Agreed.
Yea pretty much! They also throw levels at you like no tomorrow so it's very quick and easy to do exactly that.
@@IAmVehement Well... you've got me wanting to start a new character 🤣
Maybe this time I'll persevere! TIME TO BONK
Ay do it up! The game is still totally worth playing. I've done a couple of playthrough since I made this video in 2021.
DS2 is perfect the way it is. Easily the best of the series.
you dont remember lucatiel or vengarl? did you played the game?
I didn't say it was objective I said it's subjective.
@@IAmVehement Okay... but what is a value of that to the conversation?

DS2 is a good game if it not from soul series
Totally agree
Just say you're bad at the game. It's ok.
God, you people are dumb. Not liking something isn't the same as being bad at. It's called a different opinion, genius.
