bruh, I was just about to say wind could have been a factor. Sometimes winds may me moving in the same direction but there are times when the wind dies down a little or you might get a few small gusts here and there. If you had all the time in the world it would be nice to test each bike 3x each and take the average of both to compare. Great video regardless~ I'd still take the BMC over the SL8 tho haha

I really like the comparison of how it rides. I would love more comparisons, on you riding different bikes. you can find specs on any of these bikes, but how it rides/feels that’s what riders wanna know. Madone next?
From living in a windy area I know it doesn’t take much of a difference in wind speed/direction to have a massive difference in bike speed.. you need to do the test again and: Pick a non-windy day Do a circuit (not a straight road) Do two rides on each bike and take the average
The video is great content, very nice to see your opinions and facts about the bikes. As far as the science it’s not accurate, not because the power meter, but because in south Florida the wind is never flat or perfectly from the side; perhaps if you did 2.5 miles each way it would be closer. But again, your opinion and description of the bikes is very good content.
BTW, I used to live there, and rode A1A all the time. The wind.. if you know, you know. The difference in the result could simply be because the wind, as you know, is stronger later in the afternoon.
You have to repeat the test many times and average it out to come to an accurate conclusion. You would also have to alternate the order as winds pick up from morning to late afternoon more times than not (especially around the east coast). As little as 1 mph of tailwind/headwind can explain the difference.
This is a fun video, something different from the usual. Wouldn't stress about the exact power. It's not a closed course. More important is all the personal preferences about which one you like better. Even handlebars or saddle. Once you're at this price point, swinging a bit extra for components you like is no big deal
The comparison with wind and traffic varying you do have to take with a grain of salt, the direct comparison of feel riding both back to back is pure gold
Hey GC! I really enjoy your videos, and yes you do look good in that kit! Not everybody is a tour level rider, so f... the haters. Keep up the good work!
Hey GC Performance, Great Test 👏🏻 I’m SL8 fanboy so I’m happy with your results haha the only difference that I can see is one bike ascent 37ft and the other 30ft. Could be that 1w and 7ft elevation the 24” differences between these 2 bikes? Idk we’ll be waiting for your next test
I have no idea why the elevation was different, ti was the exact same course, so unless the hammerhead gps that was recording the data is off and had a spike, because i did not have a speed sensor on there, but also I ride the same group rides and same routes over 30 miles and some how my elevation is always different
Great tests. And this shows how hard and time consuming it is to do comparison tests. I guess a way to make the test more comparable is to do it with a buddy and pedal powermeters. Then both ride the same distance (as much straight line as possible like you did) about 100m behind each other with same wattage. Then switch powermeters and ride again for the same distance (in the same direction - not back - so any differences cancel out). And I also think that using the same tires would make it more comparable. They are really responsible for a measurable part of friction and can actually vary a lot. (Switching tires is not comparable to switching wheels or steering bar as those changes would be way more costly.)
By the way, the weight of sl8 is 7,28. How come this weight? I have got a Scott addict rc pro 2020 with dt swiss arc 1400 with a weight of 7,1 for less than half the price... (also with pedels)
it comes stock like that and literally 5 years ago this use to be the norm, the whole industry back in 5 years were winning the tour de france with 42 bars
It’s a great point. Just bought an SL8 and was shocked the Rival bar didn’t come in a 130/38 never mind 36. It’s 2024. WT guys have been turning in the hoods for 3 years now. BMC can do it, so can Specialized.
I don't think you need apologise for any deficiencies in the test, it's pretty good, and if you want to do more of them this is a learning experience. 1W difference between runs is on par or better than some of the GCN efforts, and they're ex pros! You can't do anything about the wind, but maybe you can use a gadget to log the wind changes between runs and estimate the effect? Does Peak Torque so something like that? Traffic is a PITA and those vehicle blocking the lane could easily account for unexpected time differences. All I can suggest there is go out at 4:30am - 5:00am before the traffic builds up, but I think everyone understands that's not necessarily possible with family and job commitments. Power meter pedals swapped between bikes would be useful, run them in parallel with the Quarq meters you would see the difference, it probably won't be much though. Probably the toughest challenge is getting the bike setups identical, and holding an identical body position for the duration of the run. Slight changes in you body will affect the result quite a bit, but you're not Dan Bigham and you don't have access to a wind tunnel, so I wouldn't worry about being perfectly optimised. Maybe one of those phone apps could help? What matters is being consistent, but if that sucks the fun out of it then just don't worry about it. Most important thing is just to enjoy it, and just share your thoughts on the experience of each bike. Anyone complaining the test isn't perfect is in the wrong place.
Hi Grant I thought that you looked good in your kit in the thumbnail and then I was watching it and you mentioned you wanted comments Looks a lot better than your old kit Colourful kit for a Colourful bloke
I love doing them just it takes time and money, filming that alone was 4 hours and also having the camera man out there I had to pay him for his time too
Cool foortage! Is this recorded from a drone or someone with a motor bike? In terms of the test, yes it's uncontrolled environment + diff pwr meter. I think it would have been better if you do a back and forth route. I am not surprised SL8 is gonna be faster than that BMC, but the 1mph avg speed is quite massive. In a race, that's almost like between 1st and last place
it was filmed from a guy on a super 73 and a nice camera, it was awesome, and yes I tried my best and I was happpy with the results of staying within 1 watt on my computer and doing what I was suppose to do
Your kit is 🔥🔥🔥. My team is currently looking for a company to do our jersey. May I ask which company you used… right now we’re using Jackaroo but the guys are complaining they need a better looking kit.
Not just the wind would have had a huge impact, also the different tyres/tubes and therefore the rolling resistance. Put the same wheels on both bikes and the assioma pedals, try hitting a day with no wind, and repeat if you have the time.
I suspect the gearing being different on each bike may have created a difference too. I agree narrower handlebars are way more comfortable. I am bias to the SL8 myself. Great Vid
Gearing shouldn’t change anything when power is controlled. Power (Watts) = Torque (Pedal Force) x RPM (Cadence)/9.55 You can put out 220 watts with higher torque, and lower cadence, but also with higher cadence, and lower torque. Given the drivetrain losses should be identical, 220w should be good for x speed provided all other conditions are the same.
Tough to do these comparisons given the variables it needs more runs to try to average them out. Obviously the wind, but also how you sit on the bike, slight fit changes - saddle height etc, being warmed up & a bit looser vs earlier on in a ride, riding over slightly different parts of the road, tyre differences if tge wheels aren't swapped, any change from vehicles or parked cars you pass etc etc. The powermeter differences can be reasonably large all mine measure differently. Even using an aerosensor to help you need to be strict on your testing protocol.
yea I know I was trying to get a test data for real world use, those roads I ride everyday up and down so I want to see how the numbers perform on that road
Very cool comparison. Is it possible to tell us, the saddle height you ride (center to top of the saddle) and the sizes of the bikes. I would much appreciate it!
Enjoyed your comparison. How tall are you? Approximately how much do you weigh? Do you get concerned about the seat stays getting damaged? I am sure at that price, you would recommend getting bike insurance? Would like to see a comparison of bike insurance. Would also like to see a review on the new Factor Ostro VAM. Thanks.
Test is fun, but I'm more looking to your opinion of how it feels, how it rides. It is subjective but that's what I'm expecting while browsing TH-cam - people sharing their impressions. THANKS! You look good 👍
Your position is one of the biggest factors in this test. There could be a significant difference if your stack and reach values vary. I’d say the variance in these result has more to do with your position and wind changes rather than the bikes.
Yea I tried to stay in the hoods the whole time and both bikes had same stem length and also lowered the exact same. The only thing was bmc had the 36 bars. But that’s there own winning formula. I tried my best to stay true to
Liking the shades. I have a set of Adidas similar. Love em'. Only plus would have been if you gave us speed. Oh, the beard is hip as well, might have slowed you a bit..
hahaha thanks so much for the compliments, I am riding an sl8 right now so I tghink I might biased but I would love to own both bikes because they look so sick but If I had to choose one I am going specialzied
all this tests you should do in velodrom where wind varaintion is excluded and having controled evironment no traffic turbolences when passing you etc.
Really interesting comparison Grant 👍👍 I wonder if the tyres are responsible for the difference in speed? Something tells me that BMC isn’t that much slower! If you saved the rides as two different ones then you should be able to compare them on Strava and pick random points to see what the differences were.
Yes many variables. But the purpose of this test was to compare off the shelf bicycles as is. Not to make all specs completely equal. Example: Rim depth and handlebar width were also different…
@charlesmansplaining lol..believe it or not it's cheaper to buy the frames and build them..I guess they look at me as being rich too...most folks don't know I cut corners..I always buy brand new frames a year later(cheaper) and then add sram red or shimano di2 ultegra with my wheels(roval rapide CLX2)..lol
The ascent was different too, regarding the fact that it was the same route one could conclude that air pressure has changed and that means, or could mean, that the wind indeed had picked up. I assume that the height is measured using air pressure, not sure though...
Good to know but performance is a general term. I m interested to know in which aspect SLR performed better? Aero speed, climbing speed, handling, comfort…
@brunomiguelgomes700 lol..knock it off..they're just bikes at the end of the day..I have no loyalty to brand..just quality..I own several bikes from trek , cervelo, specialized..they're basically all the same w a little tweak to each one..
@Questioneverything72 the SL7 sworks is quicker but the SLR madone is faster..the madone holds speeds better at 25mph..even though the madone weighs 16.6lbs with tpu inner tubes and a pair of roval CLX2 wheels(I don't like bontrager) i find myself slightly faster going up hills..maybe because of the aero properties??? Who knows..lol
I've had several Tarmacs from SL3 to SL7 and it was the bike that felt best for me, so I used it as a gauge for all other bikes. Then I got a Team Machine SLR01 and that bike just fit even more like a glove, felt smoother, and faster, until some guy crashed and slid under me and cracked the chainstay. 😭 I now gauge bikes off the BMC.
This is good.. However you should run that test with the same exact tyre/width. And maybe run 2 or 3 times for avg time and then up the wattage and do it again and get an avg. Weight does not matter much on flats. You couldve encountered some more winds and that's the only reason sl8 could be faster.
Thorough testing takes bloody ages. You'd have needed to do 4-5 runs in both directions on both bikes to get a representative result. For the sake of a TH-cam video, this was interesting enough from an experience POV. You can't say there's a difference between the two though; the standard deviations would most likely overlap over several runs. It's scary how many 'testing' videos (not just in cycling, golf is one of the worst for it) completely ignore standard deviation. It's one of the most vital bits of context when comparing anything.
Wind, traffic (having to swing around cars and then accelerate after) or even wind/draft coming off passing vehicles will all have an impact on speed, even with the same avg power. Need a course where there's zero traffic.

Not just the wind would have had a huge impact, also the different tyres/tubes and therefore the rolling resistance.
Put the same wheels on both bikes and the assioma pedals, try hitting a day with no wind, and repeat if you have the time.
but yea I was trying to use the companys spec for there bikes for the reason of maybe they think a certtain pair of wheels pairs better with the bike
Most importantly, the shades match the beard 🔥
hahaha for some reason the red beard stands otu bright on the camera
I only ride Specialized, so the results don’t surprise me. Very popular in my circle. I love my SL-6.
I suspect the gearing being different on each bike may have created a difference too. I agree narrower handlebars are way more comfortable. I am bias to the SL8 myself. Great Vid
Gearing shouldn’t change anything when power is controlled. Power (Watts) = Torque (Pedal Force) x RPM (Cadence)/9.55
You can put out 220 watts with higher torque, and lower cadence, but also with higher cadence, and lower torque. Given the drivetrain losses should be identical, 220w should be good for x speed provided all other conditions are the same.
Ayeee, you really stepped up the video quality, you hire a new editor👀. Great video and content, keep it up!
thanks dude gonna try to make it out to weston soon again
Jersey is SHARP!
Thanks so mcuh
Favoro pedals would have made the test more accurate. Back to the road for more test GC
yes I know I should have done that, it was my fault for assuming the quarqs would perform similar
How is the Bjorn Saddle ?? comfortable ?? worth investment ??
Absolute love. It is my main saddle now, it worked so well for me.
Very cool comparison. Is it possible to tell us, the saddle height you ride (center to top of the saddle) and the sizes of the bikes. I would much appreciate it!
lol to be honest I forget, I think 79cm i am so sorry
Enjoyed your comparison. How tall are you? Approximately how much do you weigh?
Do you get concerned about the seat stays getting damaged?
I am sure at that price, you would recommend getting bike insurance?
Would like to see a comparison of bike insurance.
Would also like to see a review on the new Factor Ostro VAM.
Thanks.
I am 6 foot and 200lbs, no I never worry about the breaking of seat stays, I am thinking of doing a video on bike insurance
Test is fun, but I'm more looking to your opinion of how it feels, how it rides. It is subjective but that's what I'm expecting while browsing TH-cam - people sharing their impressions.
THANKS! You look good 👍
thanks so much!!!
22.3 mph. Got it!
What? No end game on your thoughts? I think the BMC rocked it
hahaha thanks so much for the compliments, I am riding an sl8 right now so I tghink I might biased but I would love to own both bikes because they look so sick but If I had to choose one I am going specialzied
GC with the clean fade and beard, Travis who?
That BMC looks fabulous….I’m a Cervelo lover but the BMC could well peak my interest when I go for my next bike
the bmc is a bad ass bike
all this tests you should do in velodrom where wind varaintion is excluded and having controled evironment no traffic turbolences when passing you etc.
that would be dope but I do not think there is a velo anywhere around me
Hi, would you please review Sworks SL8 and V4RS?
if I ever get my chance to ride one for a while I will
What does Durianrider think ?
who knows
He think that Sl8 is Sh....t and slow
Really interesting comparison Grant 👍👍
I wonder if the tyres are responsible for the difference in speed? Something tells me that BMC isn’t that much slower! If you saved the rides as two different ones then you should be able to compare them on Strava and pick random points to see what the differences were.
Yes many variables. But the purpose of this test was to compare off the shelf bicycles as is. Not to make all specs completely equal. Example: Rim depth and handlebar width were also different…
yea the bike did not at all feel that much slower they felt very similar
@@Questioneverything72It wasn’t a criticism mate, just a comment that’s all.
Great test and fantastic kit 👍👏
thanks so much
Looking pretty sporty in that kit Grant! How do you get your voice to make that squeaky horn sound?
lmao everytime I racked my nuts on a bump
Hey, can you do a test on the LOOK blade RS too.
the look bikes are not as popular around here for some reason there are no dealers around me for like 100 miles
@@GCPerformance18 What a waste. The LOOK is a looker!!
Could you do comparison Pinarello Dogma F vs Canyon CFR Aeroad both equip with Shimano Duraace 12 speed & Duraace 50 wheelset/28mm tires.
I wish but I do not have access to those bikes
What town in FL were you riding through? The road looks busy...
Boca raton Florida, it was like mid day but yea that’s how it always is. Kind of shitty
What are you filming your ride with? Drone or someone following along? Thanks in advance for your reply.
My friend is on a super 73 filming me
That kit is 🔥
Yes….but it does not fit to the beard colour, or? 😂
I want the bike that looks faster (& cooler): BMC.
Lol
@charlesmansplaining lol..believe it or not it's cheaper to buy the frames and build them..I guess they look at me as being rich too...most folks don't know I cut corners..I always buy brand new frames a year later(cheaper) and then add sram red or shimano di2 ultegra with my wheels(roval rapide CLX2)..lol
great job Danny
The ascent was different too, regarding the fact that it was the same route one could conclude that air pressure has changed and that means, or could mean, that the wind indeed had picked up. I assume that the height is measured using air pressure, not sure though...
Very interesting, thanks
Looks like you got your warm up with the BMC
You can also experience a drafting effect from passing cars that can affect your average speed.
yea of course
I own the 2022 s-works SL7 and the new 2023/24 trek madone SLR...I love specialized but the madone SLR beats both SL8 and the BMC in performance..
Good to know but performance is a general term. I m interested to know in which aspect SLR performed better? Aero speed, climbing speed, handling, comfort…
Funboy detected, stay away kkkkkk
@@LOGICAL-JAY RSL 51 is very comfy and stable on crosswind... CLX32 u loose way too much speed on the flat...
Grant looking like snack in that new kit 🥵
zammmm making me feel all good and shittt
I've had several Tarmacs from SL3 to SL7 and it was the bike that felt best for me, so I used it as a gauge for all other bikes. Then I got a Team Machine SLR01 and that bike just fit even more like a glove, felt smoother, and faster, until some guy crashed and slid under me and cracked the chainstay. 😭 I now gauge bikes off the BMC.
ever since we brought bmc into the store they have been doing really well, and I am suprised with the qc of the bikes and the ride quality
@@GCPerformance18 That Swiss engineering and performance
It's one of the most vital bits of context when comparing anything.
yea I agree with this thats why I said it is more for fun, if it was my absolute job to collect exact data it would be an all day thing
Wind, traffic (having to swing around cars and then accelerate after) or even wind/draft coming off passing vehicles will all have an impact on speed, even with the same avg power. Need a course where there's zero traffic.
yea I was scared that was going to affect it, but I had similar cases with the bmc too
I’d love to see a Sworks Tarmac vs Sworks Roubaix. Same test. How much speed does the extra comfort cost you?
