    At my level of group riding I am not interested in "aero gains"or "weight savings." The SL8 to me is one of the
    the most unattractive bikes ever made while the SL7 is remains one of the most attractive. I can always lose a little weight and practice a better arrow position, but I will only get uglier as I age!
    I just bought one of the last available S- Works SL7 in red , satin black, fade. A very pretty bike indeed. I am very happy.

    Looking at the price of the frame alone, wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a frame and build up with top tier groupset and wheels? Looking at prices in Auatralia it works out several grand cheaper than buying the whole package. What am I missing?

      If your buying an $8,500 bike, or more so the s-works - you are probably of the “time is money” mindset. Plus anyone fast enough to take advantage of the s-works is a pro and getting the bike as a sponsor. Purely a halo product like an exotic sports car that will never be on a track.

    As someone who has both 10 and 12r bikes (sadly, not the new sl8), I can 100% say the 12r is noticeably smoother. To continue the car analogy, it’s like comparing a Benz to a Bentley but there is a feeling that makes that 12r worth it. Personally, I’d customize the build but def go with the s-works.

    At the end of the day my Canyon Ultimate SL8 weighs the same as these two bikes and only cost me $2700 plus $368 for my carbon wheels on sale so $3,068 to get a bike that is just as light and aero for racing. So I saved over $5,000 compared to even the lower end of these two models.

    • @theflyingmozart
      @theflyingmozart ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You know the Canyon Ultimate is not aero at all, right? Someone here (I think Dave Arthur) tested it, and it was even less aero than the Giant TCR despite the Giant not having integrated cables.

    • @Bellerophon17
      @Bellerophon17 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@theflyingmozart I think David Arthur found an average difference of 7 W at 40 kph, showing the TCR was faster. Being pedantic, he said he kept a similar position but the Ultimate in that test had a clearly shorter stem (he was more cramped up). Either way, it's a handful of watts.
      I don't think the Ultimate is super-aero, but it's not a bus either. Compared to the Tarmac, the many thousands in price difference is really the issue. I'm sure there are people racing at a level where the speed difference is worth it, that cost:benefit ratio will vary for people.

      @@Pablo_Coach yep. It’s a solid race bike. For pure racing I liked the Scylon slightly better, the layup and tube shapes are a little different. ADH is very stiff. But, the ride quality feels like my steel bike (Columbus Cento Omnicron tubing) but much more snappy and quicker responding. That’s probably just as it’s lighter. Side note: if you’re riding slow on flat ground, under around 25kph, the handling feels a little sluggish. But, at speed and on descents, it’s great! On climbing you don’t notice the slower handling. It’s a bike that disappears and you don’t think about it. It just does what you want. The rear wheel is tucked under you so steering is more from the hips and core. Very stable, plush ride, zero flex. It’s great. If you can find one in your size, get it!

Dropping 100g from your bike or shaving your legs or any of the other insane things cyclists do is not at all important. Then one day you go to a race and some dude beats you by a quarter of a second. No biggie - but then the next race same dude beats you by the same quarter of a second. And the next race. Eventually you do everything possible to squeeze those quarter seconds off. The S-Works is one of those things you can do. Insanely expensive, but maybe this time you beat that other dude instead of losing to him. I'll take the Pro, but then I've never been competitive.

    Sworks is good but 40% more is a lot. In reality it should be a totally different bike but I don’t think anybody believes it to be. Another middle option is to buy an sworks frameset for the logo 😂 and put on some ‘cheaper’ components to get a middle ground without paying 14000.

    $5500 for 580 grams difference??? Idc if you're filthy rich, but if you buy the s-works variant and you're not a professional racer, you're DELUSIONAL. Just go donate the $5500 to charity or some sort.
    Also, $8500 and you're only getting a DT 350 hubs??? Broooooo

    36tooth ratchet on a 2800 "top tier" wheel? LOL. Bruv, I just bought a brand new 500eur DT Swiss ER 1400 wheel set which comes with 240's hubs, 36 ratchet, bladed spokes and both wheels weigh 1450 together (spec says 1493). Aluminium spokes piss all over carbon in terms of ride quality. And in case I hit something chances of scraping the wheels are minimal.

    I don't really even want an S-Works for even 4 grand. I would happily pay 3k but no way am I spending 8k for something over 16 lbs. I hear the Chinese economy is horrible right now. Not sure I want a cheap frame from them either though so I'm looking at Taiwan manufactured bikes. The other thing about used though too is you don't know if the bike has been left in a hot car that could weaken the resin and joints if they ride it without letting it cool down so I'm very cautious when looking at places like TPC. Hoping prices drop soon.
