    I will use this video in some training. The basic premises are all there. But this is more of a 'what not to do' or a 'why were best practices developed' teaching experience. Still I have to admire the ram and slam ability of these fellow. Imagine if they had real training and real machinery? "Buddy, What's the recommended preload on these huge tapered roller bearings, again?" "I usually just hit retaining ring with my hammer about *this* hard." The entire time I was thinking how awful it would be to have to repeat this job in another month or two when everything is out of tolerance and in shreds and how much those bearings alone might be.

      The 'Ram' on the crane idea has been in use since the start of engineering and was still in use in British heavy engineering up until at least the 1960s. We used to call it a 'Tup' and it was a common way of 'shunting' something very heavy over a short distance.

Regardless, those guys did an amazing job considering their working conditions etc. Pakistan would be a much more prosperous world-player if the government worked as well as this team. I worked as an oilfield drilling electrician in Quatar UAE. I learned all about ingenuity and how to "get things done" from my two fellow electricians, Mr Jacoob & Hadji from Karachi in Pakistan. In 1977-8 I was a drilling newbie, and they saved my ignorant ass every single day. I was ashamed that my salary was 5 times theirs, but they still treated me with the highest respect, which I greatly returned.

    Good Lord! These men are amazing. I worked in the Tool & Die trade years ago and still keep my hand in machining in my small home workshop so I have an immense appreciation for what these skilled mechanics are doing. They got that shaft running true in the lathe without a dial indicator and picked up the screw thread for the retaining nut. And they nut went on and looked like the fit was perfect. That battering ram is obviously a standard tool with how mushroomed the end it. They have mastered the art of using it the way they do.

    What, exactly, was the repair here ? They welded & turned the journal, which leads me to believe the inner bearing race had spun on it, yet they re-used the same bearings (after rolling them around in dirt, of course). Wouldn't the inner race be scored if it had spun enough to destroy the journal ?
    I think Pep Boys keeps those bearings in stock. 😆

    • @ludditeneaderthal
      @ludditeneaderthal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Bearing races are very hard, the shaft is softer. Vast majority of damage will be to the shaft. The shaft was built up enough to make a fair interference fit on the race ID, so at equal temperatures there won't be appreciable slop. "Perfect job"? Of course not. But it will do what it's supposed to for quite a while. It's a crusher not a jet engine lol

      The journals for the outer bearings were worn, when they first removed the bearings you can see little dots on it, that is where on a previous repair they had peened the journals so the bearings would be a tight fit. Obviously the peening did not last, how long this repair lasts is unknown without at least a semi accurate interference fit.
