What's funny is y'all keep saying this (Which completely contradicts the original showcase/reveal of the game before it was secretly canceled), and I have yet to see anyone actually show where Hyde stated the game was more VN than sRPG. Even from the few trailers they've shown off in their horrible advertising of the game, each trailer gives me the impression of story focused in 1 and sRPG focused in another. Which would also lead anyone to believe the game is minimum 50/50 between the two.
Now we can't do anything about the game now since it's already here, but I would at least like to see where people keep getting this info from that Hyde or Bandai outright said this game would be 70% VN, 30% sRPG BEFORE the release of the game. That would be nice/helpful for folks like myself.

Been playing this game all weekend, I went in knowing from a quick google search before I bought it that it was going to be about 70% visual novel based on what the creator said. Getting into it never played a visual novel before and I’m honestly not a big fan of Tactical RPGs, but oh boy if this isn’t the most invested I’ve been in a game since DQ 11. The story really grabbed me and it really had me so immersed that I am analyzing every decision I make like I never have before in a game! Unlike Digimon World or Pokemon, having the heavy narrative element had me actually invested in my little monsters beyond ‘o he looks cool’ or whatever. Definitely get how this game might not be for everyone but it is one of best times I’ve had gaming!

To be fair in Survive's defense, aside of the creative differences of the game causing the delay, Covid also was a major part. The game was originally meant to be released in 2019. And it wasn't too far off from Hacker's Memory's release. So to answer the "this isn't what Digimon needs" complaint, it's just poorly timed.

I think this is probably the more realistic dive into being transported into the digital world, and the fact that there isn't any plot armour to keep characters alive and no matter how perfect your first play through is you will at least lose 2 characters which is really great for replayability. Loved how the characters interacted with eachother and their digimon especially with a couple not exactly accepting their digimon to be their partners. I grew up with the anime, so I had zero issue with the visual novel style. The story clearly took a lot of inspiration from Adventure 01 and Tamers, easily the best of the original 4 seasons. I thought the art style was very appealing, and yes while the battle segments aren't very detailed, I much prefer the anime inspired 2D art style over the 3D models of the recent Pokémon games. I went in looking for a classic Digimon story that could have been a new season of the anime, and an art style to match, and that's exactly what I got. I cared about a majority of the characters and even though the ones that died were really pissing me off before hand, their deaths were still shocking and by the end, I wanted to go back and see if I could save everyone. I only wish they had done an English dub, but that's not a big deal. Also the subtitle translations were very wonky at times.

"This isn't what Digimon needs right now"
Yeah it is. We have plenty of variety in Digimon. From VPet to Racing and Platform Fighter, we've got a bit of everything and that's what makes it so enjoyable.
Digimon doesn't have to make a comeback, it never went anywhere! The new card game is more successful than ever, the anime right now is solid. The Virtual Pets have been so popular they release outside of Japan now. The games are picking back up over here now that CyberSleuth is available in more places. We'll see more "World" style games eventually. But we don't desperately need them at this time.
Digimon isn't pokemon, it isn't TRYING to be pokemon. It doesn't need to push a mainline game every year or two. Whatever "mainline" means to you. Digimon Survive IS a Digimon game, just one you happen to not enjoy, and that's alright.

    • @AlejandroRodriguez-cy8ee

yes it did what are you on about? this series was almost dead were it not for the reboot in Digimon Adventures and Cybersleuth/hacker's memory (and even then Toei was adamant about Digimon content being covered they straight flagged a lot of people for just talking about the anime, while also giving little budget to the anime, which is why we got some MS paint animations at time in the episodes). Digimon isn't pokemon, it's competing with Pokemon. Just as BOTW is competing with other open world games, so is Digimon with monster catching and raising games, however the only ones that everyone remember about those are Digimon and Pokemon.
it doesn't need a comeback, because it already made the comeback like 2-3 years ago. giving it the track it needed to even warrant an Anime reboot (and those don't easily come in or are even approved. so even then it's a miracle Toei even approved it).

    • @shipool
      @shipool 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

@@AlejandroRodriguez-cy8ee It may shock you to hear this but, Digimon and Pokemon are not competing for the same player base. The inclusion of monsters does not make them the same genre, not even remotely so. That's like implying Pokemon is competing with dragon quest because they're both JRPGs... Nah bruh.. nah. Shin Megami Tensei is my favourite pokemon competitor!
2020 reboot got approved after the success of; Kizuna, Tri and the VPet reboots, even featuring designs from the latter as protagonist digivolutions. Those got approved because of continued success in Japan and support from fans, both domestic and international.
The franchise didn't need to make a comeback, the west is not the whole world, and not every series needs to be in everyone's pocket. They're doing fine and have been for awhile. If you want, you could call it a "Western Comeback", but domestically, and to fans that have been following the franchise, the series never went anywhere.

      3. Pretty sure people were talking more about pokemon, monster hunter, nintendo, Elden Ring and Covid in japan. Digimon Survive is now a completely new type of Genre for Digimon which doesn't fall into either of those Series. I loved Digimon survie. I spent a week playing it and I lost 5 people on my first run. Sure the visual Novel playstyle was annoying at first, but it works for this game. Also, the game was heavily advertised as a Novel based game, has been for last year. Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my all-time favourite games and I was ecstatic to see the classic style of combat back, I loved that the Digimon evolve differently based on choices you make. Not just your main character but all the other characters too.
I thought Cyber Sulth was great but this game topped my expectations. the Dark themes, the fact that every conversation matters along with almost a dozen different endings...this game is exactly what Digimon needed. I will admit there are some elements to the game that could have been done better, I won't say what to avoid spoilers and there were 1 or 2 plotlines that I would have like to see resolved(hopefully I will see them resolved in runs where I don't kill the characters off) and grinding for Evo items is a pain. But you take the good and the bad, Digimon Survive was in my opinion mostly good and well worth it. The game is all about Survival, there are no second chances unless you start a new game or savescum.
I think the main issue some people have with it is it's so different from the games we are used to playing. It's not actions based, it's not easy, it's not light and friendly and it is certainly not a kids' game. It's dark. gritty and done in a gameplay style not seen in the west. It's unique and quite frankly I hope to see more Digimon games like it in the future.

People talking about how a Visual Novel game is not what the Digimon franchise needs right now clearly don't know how popular Visual Novels are in Japan. You know, the country Digimon originally came from.
It might not hit it off as much in the West, but I can guarantee you the game is going to sell well in Japan, which is the number one priority for Bandai Namco and Hyde here.
For comparison, the entire Fate franchise (Fate/Stay night, Fate/Zero etc.) was birthed from Visual Novels. And the games sold so well over there, Type-Moon didn't even bother to port them to the West.
Japanese developers are always going to develop games primarily for the Japanese market.

I think the game is great, it's kinda exactly what I was hoping it'd be and as I went through it I was rushing battles to get back to the story even. And I mean that as a positive. This sort of story and presentation, imo, was almost perfect in execution outside of localization issues. My biggest issue was I accidentally got a really good ending and I thought my decisions didn't affect the story much, and they do lol

5:51 the review actually starts for those wondering.
Also, I am somebody that hates reading. I struggled through The Call of Cthulhu even though I enjoyed it. But I really enjoyed the story of this game. I'm usually a monkey brain about games and want shooty bang bang. But I enjoyed the story and characters, maybe that’s because I played Persona 5 before and that kind of got me used to reading a lot in games? Idk. And idk if this was just me, but I played on ps4 and the graphics and such were fine. There was barely any stuttering for me.
Also, maybe it’s not what “Digimon needs right now” but it’s a Digimon game. Digimon for so many years have made games that use the monster raiser type thing in what I feel are really fun ways. Digimon Cyber Sleuth was a fun JRPG with fun mechanics, Digimon Dusk and Dawn had a great style and amazing cast of Digimon to select. Digimon world brought that Tamagotchi aspect to Digimon games. And now Digimon Survive has created a Digimon Visual Novel with tactical RPG elements. Sure, the trailers and such didn’t really show that, but then bash the trailers and marketing. I enjoyed the game and I’m just happy to be getting more creative Digimon content.
And to be honest, I was surprised too when I started playing, but I got over it quickly. I just enjoyed it because I was able to see Agumon on the screen talking and being goofy. I started enjoying the game and tried getting out of the mindset of “Digimon games should always be RPGS or JRPGS”.
Also, quick tangent, no hate, but don’t be mad at people saying you only review games you hate to get clicks. Because let’s be honest, this title is very loaded with bait. But I digress.
My message to Digimon fans on the fence is, do the research before you get a game to make sure you enjoy it. You might not enjoy this game, and that’s fine, but please. Don’t ruin the enjoyment for the rest of us. As a Digimon fan since I was younger, I hate when Digimon fans have this idea of what Digimon games “should be” because that’s different to all of us. To some it’s this mystery filled world, to some it’s a monster collect-em-all, and to some it’s a Pokémon rip off (saddening). Just enjoy what you enjoy, but don’t be slinging buzzwords and harsh criticism for no reason (not saying this guys doing it but I’ve seen people doing it) because the Digimon fandom is already kind of disliked by other fandoms, and we don’t need the reputation of being gatekeepers that are never pleased. Let us discuss these things calmly and with understanding of both sides.
Let us be the best us we can be, and be the lovers of Digimon we are.

Despite it being advertised that it’s 70-30 in terms of story and gameplay, I find myself playing around 30-45 mins (sometimes more) for each battle. Then again, maybe it’s because I’m not used to tactical RPGs so it takes a while for me to “strategise” and because I read pretty fast so I go through the visual novel aspects pretty fast 😁 either way, I find it even. I hope Digimon/visual novel/tactical RPG/mystery genre fans will give it a try with an open mind.

Even the lead developer said it would be around 70-30%. Now, saying that Bandai should not do these kind of projects is also wrong, since a Digimon World is under development and a Cybersleuth also. This was also confirmed, since this game was mostly delegated to another studio that did most of the game since they have different development groups for different games. I agree that sometimes the game feels slow, but it doesn´t look bad and less if you compare it to Legends Arceus for instance.

VNs come in a lot of styles, but while there certainly are heavy novel-like lite on choice/action VNs that are practically books, Survive strikes me as more similar to watching a anime season with subtitles on, except you also can make choices to change the story and play out battles. I'm pretty excited to get my copy! I'm avoiding spoilers but practically everything that I have seen sounds like the type of experience I personally really love to settle into and fixate on for days.

I'm confused, how did you not expect a visual novel to be a visual novel? Every media that covered it and even the devs explicitly said it multiple times: 70% VN, 30% game
This is my first visual novel, by the way, and this mix works perfect for me!! Also, this is soooo Digimon, more like any other game ever since Digimon Adventure

I have allot of switch games and this is the first time hearing about vn. The trailers lookd just like a normal game and that is not what you get.

Literally the first line of the game page: "Digimon Survive presents a hybrid visual novel and tactical RPG"

@@mathiasm8489 the trailers show a lot of visual novel, no clue what you mean. It tells you that your choices impact story, and the way it looks scream visual novel. It's not the creators fault if someone cant recognize a game genre when it literally shoves it in your face.

Luckily, they supposedly are making a new Digimon Story/World game in the nearish future. And releasing Re:Code in english (though it probably won't be as good of a translation as the fan patch). So hopefully Digimon will have a comeback.

Yeah, Habu said a Digimon Story game focusing on the Olympos XII was being developed alongside Digimon Survive, but Survive getting delayed also delayed the Story game.

That's weird, I actually like the free battle experience in this game. Not bad for a novel focused game.

I did look it up before buying and I expected the visual novel aspect of it
I personally have a big library of visual novels so this won't want a difference to me so I'm happy so far playing it

I'm loving Digimon Survive mostly for the story and characters. Like the tactical RPG stuff is there and it is fine but I have been playing on the hardest difficulty and have failed a stage maybe twice. The thing is I'm not a visual novel person. I have tried to get into several whose premises seemed interesting and they always put me to sleep, but with this game I feel like I am getting a high quality Digimon story where I actually care about the partner Digimon unlike most Digimon games that treat them like pets or Pokémon substitutes that I switch out of my team as soon as I get something stronger. I'm also excited about the branching narrative paths as from what I have gathered it is possible to prevent certain character deaths on subsequent playthroughs and given how impactful those moments are on the story I'm curious to see how that changes the narrative. That said it is far from perfect. The tactical RPG elements feel tacked on and could have been better fleshed out, there is a severely limited roster of available Digimon to recruit, and I have noticed several grammatical and spelling mistakes in the English localization which I feel like if you are going to lean heavy into visual novel territory should be something that you are meticulous about. It probably also helps that I am playing this alongside Xenoblade Chronicles 3 so when I hit the point of visual novel fatigue I can switch to a more standard JRPG. The one thing I didn't quite understand about Wood's review is that he wasn't expecting it to be mostly visual novel, and I will agree that there wasn't a ton of marketing for this game. But everything I saw made it seem pretty clear that we were getting a text heavy visual novel with tactical RPG stages mixed in. I can still respect his opinion, but would encourage anyone looking for a darker Digimon story that doesn't mind a lot of reading to give this a go.

I agree. I came across some character deaths and it is extremely gorey. The VA really did an amazing job realizing the game's lack of graphic/visual capability

I think they did I've seen people on TH-cam who already have beaten the game 4 times and 1 route would take about 40 to 50 hours(they beat the game on ng+ 3 times)
