i have noticed on a good majority of the counterfeit zippos i have purchased that a pinkie nail dragged over the logo on the bottom of the lighter you will always have crisp lines on a real zippo on a good majority of counterfeit (80%+) the edged of the lettering on the bottom are rounded over and smooth
@45Blackjack your zippo was made in 85, before numbers they used symbols slash marks and straight marks even dots...before that patents numbrs gave a general date
Genuine zippo box and the 'lifetime guarantee' stuff and zipp blue advertisement inside...but if it had no orange sticker is it still ALWAYS counterfeit? I bought them off Amazon
Hello, I have what I think is a real Zippo, It was purchased in 2002 and came in what appeared to be genuine packaging. It has a 5 barrel hinge, steel rivits, 16 holes in the chiminey and a brass eyelet at the flint. I can see from wear that the body is brass, clad in an "antique silver" finish. the bottom is marked "A" Zippo 02" "Bradford PA Made in USA" What is makeing me wonder is that the bottom of the body is flat, not canned. Did they make flat bottomed Zippos in 2002?
Maybe someone could help me...I purchased two 2011 Zippos from Amazon.com a few weeks ago and two things strike me as odd: 1) neither came with the orange sticker affixed to the reverse of the casing, and 2) the insert on both says, 'ZIPPO MADE IN U.S.A.' rather than 'MADE IN ZIPPO U.S.A.' like all my others do. I know that the absence of the sticker is not necessarilly an indication that I have a counterfeit, but if anyone else has a 2011 insert I would like to know what it says. Thanks!
i have a chrome libra zippo, had it for years, it was a birthday gift. but on the bottom the R restistered trademark symbol in not top right of the zipp"O", it's next to the bottom of the O. should i worry that it's fake? it didn't come with a sticker, but in an original zippo box.
btw you can get zippo for less than 5 bucks cause my aunt works on the finishing line in bradford PA and she gets the five finger discount all the time
My "Zippo" caries the the 1981 "/" marking on the left side, however the wording is Zippo (Rights reserved R thing) next line Bradford, PA. Does not say "Made in USA"? Also the insert markings are written vertically, not horizontally. Is it real, or fake?
I have an chinese lighter. The funny thing is that it had three layers. The outter layer was chromed, second layer was copper, and the last layer is steel, weird , lol
My zippo, a $10 from Wal-mart ($15 from meijer) one, has a "k" as the month and the inside of the case is also turning green from tarnish. What does this mean?
Should be real if you buy direct from Amazon themself. But then it might be missing the sticker if it was a return. Real Zippos would also have the circular price on the front of the Zippo too. I would check to make sure all the other tell tell signs of a zippo are still there. Or you could just return it to be safe.
I looked on amazon for a black ice zippo and they are selling for 15 dollars normally 25. it says the seller is zippo and there is a picture with the sticker on it. is this still fake because of the price?
I've bought 6 zippos and only one came with the sticker, are you sure they're meant to all come with stickers? I've bought 4 from Amazon and a couple from a local shop and one of them from Amazon had the sticker. I even bought the 80th anniversary zippo and it didn't have the sticker D:
So what does it mean if the letter like the "J" for example is a "G" like mine. "G Zippo 11" I baught it at walmart and it came with a Zippo box and the orange sticker.
I was reading a zippo buying guide on ebay and it says that not all countries receive zippo's with the orange safely sticker on it. If it came from a country that doesn't have the stickers than it can still be real.
just a side note ive got around 5 genuine zippo. I know there genie cause sound, importing, brass wheel. In UK and other places the information shown is in the instruction manual. No sticker :)
From watching this video, my $10 Zippo that I purchased from Wal-Mart is real except for the inner piece. Where it says where the lighter was made in it reads "ZIPPO MADE IN U.S.A." instead of "MADE IN ZIPPO U.S.A." On both parts of my Zippo have the letter "I" and the number "11". Or the letter "I" should have serifs?
i have a day of the dead zippo i bought from a corner store earlier this year, in a zippo display case and came with a box and guarantee and everything. the insert says zippo made in usa, and the case actually looks copper, im not sure though, it has a new type of coating thats like that smooth paint. the bottom stamping is exact. it sounds real as hell. i may post a video response to this video to show you
so if mine says L and instead of the year it says XI as in roman numerals..what does that mean..by the way the lighter was purchased in 1997..all other markings are correct..came in the official box as well with the zippo manual that comes with it
good video jeff.i actually have real copper zippos.i got like 3 or 4 but i dont use them because theyre so tarnished and they smell like old pennies as u said.i wish i could use them but they will just tarnish as soon as i touch them with my dirty salty hands.any ideas as far as a coating i can put on them after i clean them? i would really like to use them because they are pretty old and in decent condition.hell i might even send u one if u make a video on it.get back to me please -tonino-
the vintage replica come with brass inserts too i want a 1962 era insert for my 1962 zippo. how can i tell if im buying the right year. and of course a authentic one thanks
Hey you might have said it in the video and i missed it, but what if instead of a two digit year on the bottom, I have roman numerals? everything else checks out but this. I know it is a 1996.
What some people don't realize is that there will be slight inconsistencies even in genuine stuff like this.. Examples will be vintage american fender stratocasters. Sometimes even a month apart in production means a slight change in wiring or even headstock logo shapes on transition models. Just because two items don't match exactly doesn't mean one is fake, in this case especially considering the two items are 3 years apart.
i got a real zippo from the 80s thats a special zippo for the chopper legion in the country my uncle bought it for my father and i got the real zippo storage for it but the stamps are not close at at to this one?
I went to a vintage shop and bought a all black zippo for 7 dollars and it wasnt working (could work with gas and flint) but I noticed it had the initials P.A.K. on it and it looked as if it was spray painted black. It has a zippo logo over the black paint that is fading and has brass showing through the paint. The hinge is really firm and tough to open. And the inside features no instructions on the metal. The screw for flint is way smaller and the cotton and cotton cover are very thick. The bottom has the zippo logo but the paint I believe has covered every piece of important info. Overall a really weird lighter I now own. Don't know if its real tbh.
Just tried to move a new lighter into case and it does not fit. Might be a clue as to if its real or fake.. (as in not fit I mean goes in but will now close right)
@45Blackjack Zippos started their roman numerals in 1987 and put just the year beginning in 2000. Sometimes you will see a double stamp of 2000 and xvi. Zippos didn't always have the orange stickers and it is a US only thing. I think it started back in the early 90s
hey dude i have a question, i just bought a zippo quite expensive one. the code is 28320, but the inside says " ZIPPO MADE IN U.S.A". but i got the orange seal on before i open it. But when i see ur video it's the fake one??? please explain XD
Not much more? Jeff, you should remove cotton and wick and look inside. Fake ones are usually not as hermetic as real ones plus they will not have filler hot-glue alike substance in there that prevents leakage from through the top.
@cutlerylover the guitar face one is only one month older than the zippo i carry i swear ive learned more from you in the last week about zippos than i learned in a lifetime from family members who carry zippos like yesterday i went to my grandfathers (hes been an active zippo user for 40 years was showing my (I) 08 zippo to him and i watched him light his cig, and then i seen it a 70's zippo with the old scroll type lettering and i wouldnt have know that if it wasnt for you so thank you
I have this old zippo style lighter marked "Moss Invincible" on the bottom. Also marked Japan. Its similar to a slim style zippo. How do i find replacement parts for this thing?
@sportssox10 I have one that dates to 1994 and it too is printed from cam to wheel. I could be wrong, but I think that the chimney to bottom printing started in 2002. As for the inside color, my older Zippos tend to have slightly darker hued internals which may mean that the older ones are a bit tarnished or that Zippo was using brass with a different amount of zinc in older models.
Zippos since 2001 have come with numbers, from 1986 to 2000 they came with roman numerals, from 1974 to 1986 they came with slashes ( /, \ ), from 66 to 73 they came with bars ( | ), from 58 to 65 they came with dots ( . ) and the ones before that came with patent numbers. Since your's is from 1996 it should say XII on the bottom.
you forgot to say that the cam on the real one is darker and more black....and the real one has a notch or chip on the bottom corner but the fake does not
I just boght a zippo and the wick was exposed like the fake one. I am positive it is real zippo, only a bend in the wick was exposed on the side of the packing, but it was still exposed.
you may have experience with zippos but i have experience with ferrous and non ferrous metals and im sorry to bust your bubble but both zippos are made from brass
i have gotten a few real zippos for cheap i got a set of them for $10 one with a eagle and one with a wolf on the front i also got a 1963 zippo for $6 but of course they where both from a pawn shop
i have noticed on a good majority of the counterfeit zippos i have purchased that a pinkie nail dragged over the logo on the bottom of the lighter you will always have crisp lines on a real zippo on a good majority of counterfeit (80%+) the edged of the lettering on the bottom are rounded over and smooth
The orange, "No sad onions" sticker is important for the survival of freedom.
why would they use copper instead of brass? wouldn't that make it cost more to make?
I can see the difference in the metals, the brass is goldy yellow while the copper is a more tarnished color.
Jeff - I also have a zippo stamped with an H and X Made in Niagara Falls, Ontario
@45Blackjack your zippo was made in 85, before numbers they used symbols slash marks and straight marks even dots...before that patents numbrs gave a general date

They are both original. A high polished zippo sounds never the same as a brushed finish. Each Zippo is unique.
btw you can get zippo for less than 5 bucks cause my aunt works on the finishing line in bradford PA and she gets the five finger discount all the time
I did have one genuine zippo, a 1937 replica that came with the wick like that,
My "Zippo" caries the the 1981 "/" marking on the left side, however the wording is Zippo
(Rights reserved R thing) next line Bradford, PA. Does not say "Made in USA"? Also the insert markings are written vertically, not horizontally. Is it real, or fake?

he definitely realizes it. He says he couldn't find his 2011 zippo.
the size of the chimney holes look like they're different sizes too.
you should use the jewelers loop when showing those tiny details. just a suggestion
I have a jack daniel's zippo but it doen't ping, it is because there's a thick plastic design glued on it?
C stand for the month of MARCH because zippo made letter stand for each month from A TO L and those are January to December.
i wonder what would happen if you sent it in for repair?
actually what i found out is that upto 2010 models it says "Made in ZIPPO usa"
but after 2010 [2011-2013] models it says "ZIPPO Made in usa"
My zippo, a $10 from Wal-mart ($15 from meijer) one, has a "k" as the month and the inside of the case is also turning green from tarnish. What does this mean?

ive seen a four and a half dollar one on ebay before!
I looked on amazon for a black ice zippo and they are selling for 15 dollars normally 25. it says the seller is zippo and there is a picture with the sticker on it. is this still fake because of the price?

@Zach84932 no, but they're the only ones supposed to put zippo on their merchandise.
@Racngixer1 i dont think so mate is it a 2011 one?
all my 2011 ones have ZIPPO MADE IN USA stamped on the insert
I was reading a zippo buying guide on ebay and it says that not all countries receive zippo's with the orange safely sticker on it. If it came from a country that doesn't have the stickers than it can still be real.

Here in Denmark, the zippoes doesnt come with the orange sticker, only the box =)
i have a day of the dead zippo i bought from a corner store earlier this year, in a zippo display case and came with a box and guarantee and everything. the insert says zippo made in usa, and the case actually looks copper, im not sure though, it has a new type of coating thats like that smooth paint. the bottom stamping is exact. it sounds real as hell. i may post a video response to this video to show you
The fake one has a minute point by the flint wheel
so if mine says L and instead of the year it says XI as in roman numerals..what does that mean..by the way the lighter was purchased in 1997..all other markings are correct..came in the official box as well with the zippo manual that comes with it
is zippo the only company that can make that style lighter?
my zippo is real and it didn't come with a warranty but i do have a box and red sticker i've watched other videos could there be a reason for this
The UK retailer don't have the seal. Maybe someone took it off. If it looks like the rest of them, i assume it's real.
Is the pin on the backside of the wheel wider than the real zippo?
@Area612 some arent canned. espeacially tue ones without a matt finish. what kind of zippo is it?
i bought a zippo from a smoke mark bout $30(AU) it came with a zippo book but no sticker (C 08) street crome) is it a counter fit
good video jeff.i actually have real copper zippos.i got like 3 or 4 but i dont use them because theyre so tarnished and they smell like old pennies as u said.i wish i could use them but they will just tarnish as soon as i touch them with my dirty salty hands.any ideas as far as a coating i can put on them after i clean them? i would really like to use them because they are pretty old and in decent condition.hell i might even send u one if u make a video on it.get back to me please -tonino-
thanks i have a zippo i have been trying to figure out and the flame on the logo gave it away
the vintage replica come with brass inserts too i want a 1962 era insert for my 1962 zippo. how can i tell if im buying the right year. and of course a authentic one thanks
Do the zippo blu's come with the orange stickers too?
but they sell the black ice zippo's at the official zippo online shop... now i'm confused
he's explaining that the black ice one he's showing in the video is fake, not that the model itself is fake and not manufactured by zippo
I have this insert (my only zippo haha(first also)) the insert has ZIPPO before made in USA does it mean its fake?
Yo Jeff. I'm gonna buy a Zippo pretty soon. Anyway I can detect if its real? And any zippos you would recommend for a newbie
I have a zippo says 03 k bradford pa made in usa is it real or fake just curious
it means it was made in may. Each letter corresponds to a month. A is January B is February and so on.
Hey you might have said it in the video and i missed it, but what if instead of a two digit year on the bottom, I have roman numerals? everything else checks out but this. I know it is a 1996.
@geurgeury I think the emblem is pewter and yeah, it doesn't ping. Ive got the same model...Love it!
i have noticed on your real Zippo there are two dashes where the outer side part on the end. the counter fit did not have that from what i could see.
I have a 2011 one. it has ZIPPO made in usa. is it fake?
mine is with zippo first. But has the licence and this is in Australia and its brass with the zippo click.
@pim1234 the real one is well worh the extra costs cincer you get a lifetime no questions asked free repair or replacement
Are zippos from amazon real? some don't come with a sticker.
Are you planing to review the fake knife?
The cam on the fake is different too

would Zippo fix the zippo if the top broke off?
i got a real zippo from the 80s thats a special zippo for the chopper legion in the country my uncle bought it for my father and i got the real zippo storage for it but the stamps are not close at at to this one?

What if the ZIPPO logo on the bottom of mine is just plain text and the same font as everything else?
cutlerylover: the flame is alot higher on the fake one
me *pulls up zippo checks flame*
What dues it mean if the words on the insert ar going from where you fill it ti the top
Also the piece of metal that holds the lid is different
somone please help so my zippo where it has the month letter stamp says H obviously there is no month H does this mean it is fake
the zippo company themselves onAmazon sells Zippos for around 6-8$
The case on the fake one looks thinner
jeff, if they go through so much work for these fakes, why do they sell for 5$ and not like 15 or 20?
@45Blackjack Zippos started their roman numerals in 1987 and put just the year beginning in 2000. Sometimes you will see a double stamp of 2000 and xvi. Zippos didn't always have the orange stickers and it is a US only thing. I think it started back in the early 90s

how to get areal zippo (Egypt here) for low price?
Not much more? Jeff, you should remove cotton and wick and look inside. Fake ones are usually not as hermetic as real ones plus they will not have filler hot-glue alike substance in there that prevents leakage from through the top.

On the inserts the real zippo has a longer line poping out
14:25 there is a trade mark stamp after ZIPPO on the fake one.
my new 2012 insert says ZIPPO made in USA, so I think they might have changed that sometime after 2008
do a review on the waterproof zippo
Sometimes I wonder if zippo actually makes these they just dont package them the same and use cheaper materials to sell them cheaper..
zippo should sponsor this video
I have this old zippo style lighter marked "Moss Invincible" on the bottom. Also marked Japan. Its similar to a slim style zippo. How do i find replacement parts for this thing?

i was comparing my 2011 zippo and it says zippo then made in usa but i can garanty this one is a real one so i think they have changed that since 2008
I should point out that I do believe you that this one is fake though. It being made of copper is a huge give away.
The solid zippo has a brass insert
Yes my zippo from 1989 also has the "r" under the "o" but i had it checked in a couple of pawn shops and all told me it's genuine model.
@cutlerylover at 10:40 it looks like the lid of the real one is copper
is there amywhere that I can buy the inserts without buying a wholemlighter
On their website, they sell all that stuff I'm sure they sell inserts alone.
you forgot to say that the cam on the real one is darker and more black....and the real one has a notch or chip on the bottom corner but the fake does not
I just boght a zippo and the wick was exposed like the fake one. I am positive it is real zippo, only a bend in the wick was exposed on the side of the packing, but it was still exposed.
you may have experience with zippos but i have experience with ferrous and non ferrous metals and im sorry to bust your bubble but both zippos are made from brass
I have a 2011 zippo and it looks exactly the same as your 2008 zippo
i have gotten a few real zippos for cheap i got a set of them for $10 one with a eagle and one with a wolf on the front i also got a 1963 zippo for $6 but of course they where both from a pawn shop
the zippo on the casing of the real one dose not have the R after zippo but the fake one dose have it :)
@jurrian3000 probably not, I bought on from their website, and it did not come with a sticker
