Called the octopus because he can play multiple rythems time signatures at the same time where it would take 4 different drummers all playing together to do what he does all by himself. Just watch his hands and the high hat going at 3 different speeds at the same time. One story is when John, the drummer from System of a Down was invited over to Adam Jones' studio to listen to the new songs as he was playing this for him he asked " are those multiple tracks mixed together"? Adam said nope, that's Just Danny playing, and john was like "he's a freaking alien.!
The sheer accuracy of and attention to every strike is profound. Even how he changes the volume of rim hits at the perfect intervals is mad impressive by itself.

I like your reaction. You may want to pay more attention to how well skilled Danny plays those many drumming sounds precisely and on point. Before you wait on the big pop of the harder hits, notice the intricate and delicate drumming of the softer hits, and many of them in fact. How many sets of those drums he goes around with those octopus arms. He is one of the greatest drummers. Damn gifted.
From what I heard, Danny originally joined the group because he felt sorry for them, cause no one wanted to be their drummer. A wonderful decision he made!
Nothing like the poly-rhythmic time signatures like Danny Carey's. And hitting all the shots on Maynard's vocal's. Some subtly, some not so subtle. Danny is a machine
Just the control of the high hat while he playing the pads is nuts. It never falters it hits the same every time. He is the best living rock drummer for sure.
You two are always great. Thank you for uploading your explorations into music. So many of us "subs" love hearing/seeing these things again through new eyes. See you on the next video!

I requested this video, i'm glad you're reacting to it, as a drummer myself, Danny is my favorite :) He has his own name on the jersey ;) "You know why they call him the octopus? Because of his arms?" I lmao at that one ^^
*The dude, Danny, is older than me by a year. So he turns 61 yrs in 16 days from now. He isn't about to go off....he's already doing so. He's playing time signatures not commonly done. It is changing through these; 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8. Some say it is a cycle of 33/8ths or 33/16ths. Try bobbing your head or tapping your feet to it in rhythm, and you find yourself constantly off. I just find it mind blowing when trying to find and even keep the beat.*
He is thee best drummer of today. Yrs ago when me and a couple friends saw them on the Lateralus tour, at the end of the show he tossed out an autographed drum head that my friend had caught. He then later gave it to me. Still have it to this day of course with my ticket stub from that show. Great video!!
It's hard to believe a human brain is capable of that. During that section he literally has four different things going on. Left foot on the high-hat, right on the kick-bass, right hand and left hand playing two different time signatures. Enough to give me a seizure. Hahaha. Incredible.
Danny Carey wears the jersey of the best player in a basketball franchise for the city they are performing in, that’s why he has a personalized Boston Celtics jersey. Thanks for reacting to Tool, I love this video and wish DC had more drum cams but covid robbed us of that. (This was recorded just before pandemic) I hope you guys noticed at the point he's slow building the song about midway through, he is drumming with all 4 limbs at completely different timings, a leg on symbol (high-hat), a leg on bass drum, right arm double tapping something like 5 different drums, left arm triple tapping something like 4 separate drums, all at different beats and all gradually increasing speed to match the emotion of the song. Try tapping your head and rubbing your stomach, now add legs and do them gradually quicker over time and all different rhythms while changing the spots you tap or rub. He's probably the best alive today on drums.
@@diesel2460 It definitely is, you are too right, but I figured they may not be familiar with it so why muddy the waters. DC does polyrhythms better then anyone. Thanks for reply, appreciate you!
It's almost impossible to explain how insane what he does on the drums to anyone that doesnt play an instrument...The only way i've been even close to describing it is, imagine using your right hand to hit something 8 times, your left hand hitting a different thing 5 times, your right foot hitting 1 pedal 4 times and your left foot hitting another pedal 6 times...and making it all sync up...I read this back to myself and even i'm confused lmao. BUT he really is amazing

its the incredibly different rhythms he does ...one with the left, one with the right , sometimes adding the foot action in....you cant count a regular 4/4 rhythm in this song.,..so different, so perfect!!!

neat side note about Danny Carey, he is 6 foot 5. He was also a basketball player and chose music over basketball when he went on to higher education. TBF, he even admitted he only received offers to play for some smaller schools and his chances of going pro would have been very slim to non-existent, he was still none the less a fantastic athlete for where he came from. Glad he chose to pursue music to the extent he did. Like other people have mentioned, he is getting close to his 60's and he isn't showing any signs of slowing down drumming and skill-wise. He's a complete beast.
