12:22 I thought it was implied that the anti feral ghoul serum is what is in the IV bags that you show as background footage when Cooper is in the coffin.
It's literally in the shot he edited in as he's saying that, I thought it was clearly that he was being dripfed the serum by whoever was keeping him hostage to keep him sane. and the show also shows the same rad away serum in the iv bag that's in the power armor.
I think the issue he was trying to raise was more with how often he needed it/how much of a resource sink it would realistically be to keep refilling the IV bag just to keep someone prisoner. I don't think he was trying to imply it was like a massive plot hole or anything, just one of those little nitpicks that can sometimes stretch suspension of disbelief and arguably doesn't add *that* much to the show overall. Honestly, my bigger complaint with that particular scene is Cooper retains any sanity at all...not because of feral ghoul stuff, but being buried underground, unable to move but still conscious and kept alive for even a short period of time is bound to have an impact. I feel like the scene would play out more or less the same if he was approached by a group that tried to capture him, still had an action scene, then got the offer and went on his way without having any of the buried underground stuff. But, again, it's a pretty minor gripe overall
@@paulg.4812 underground in the coffin he's protected from radiation and unconscious. One could say that between those two things very little RadAway is needed to sustain a ghoul, since the RadAway is only needed to counter ongoing radiation exposure and/or consciousness/activity. (and for those who'd say that the bags would be stolen, one could say that the bags were only shown for audience purposes, and that they were actually either inside the coffin _or_ hidden inconspicuously on the ground (more likely, since even with low RadAway consumption, it would probably still need occasional refills over long periods of time)

Most criticisms about plot I've heard and read on the internet are stupid. So is the criticism about the humour and music. One might not like it but it certainly works for a segment of the audience that is into a show/game like fallout.

Not at all, because VATS is a gameplay contrivance and not something that's literally happening canonically. Implementing stuff like VATS causes narrative inconsistencies, e.g. when Lucy can magically heal a stab wound with a stimpak but Dane can't do the same with a cut from a pristine razor blade.
The way I read the sex thing with the BoS is that, basically, they've got all these child soldiers they're training to send out to the wasteland to fight, die, and find tech...and that's it. They don't care if they know how to have sex or not, because that's irrelevant to the Brotherhood. So as a result, You have alll of these emotionally stunted, soon-to-be soldiers that have never learned sex ed, explaining it to each other.
Yeah the whole "Moldaver is actually good" thing almost got me for a second then i remembered she brought a group of actual raiders to pillage a vault full of innocent people. People not unlike her lover or best friend, when she could have brought a team of NCR remnants. When you learn the reverence moldaver had for Lucy's mother, it just seems unbelievable that she would choose to put her children at risk, and do more than what was absolutely necessary.
The storytelling makes no sense in so many ways. What you just mentionned is a proof that most things were written for the sake of the wow effects. The whole first episode vault part makes no sense (the marriage with only strangers, the overseer not knowing anything despite being able to communicate, the "choose your daugther or them" which has no consequences...).
Yeah, it has blown me away how many people praise the writing, when it makes little to no sense on the regular. Just a few of the many things I noticed: Why did the sophisticated Enclave mini-gun turret miss the Doctor at nearly point blank range even though he was shuffling quite slowly? These would not be of use against a real hazard if they could not hit a slow moving older man. Why is there a mystery about the Vault 31 in Vault 33, when people know that all of their leaders come from there, and they literally sing a song about electing the next leader from Vault 31? How was it suspicious that all their leaders come from there, if they have been singing that song long enough that everyone knows the lyrics? Why did everyone in Vault 32 kill each other and themselves when they found out that Vault 31 has cryofrozen Vault-Tec people? They presumably loved their Vault just like their friends in Vault 33, and thus probably thought highly of Vault-Tec. Are we to believe that when they found out they were to be trained to conquer the wasteland, they all lost their minds and killed each other and themselves? Why do the Vault 33 people get to see the Vault 32 people every few years, but have *never* seen anyone from Vault 31 except their 'elected leaders' (and Stephanie Harper for some reason), and not at all find that suspicious or at least weird? Why was Stephanie Harper unfrozen in 31 to join 33, when she is shown turning wrenches with Lucy instead of having a leadership role like the others from Vault 31? How did Moldaver survive 200+ years? Why is this not explained? If she were still alive, one would assume it would be answered in Season 2, but well... seems less pressing to answer once she is gone, so it seems like and oversight. Why did Moldaver go through Vault 32 to get to 33, when she could have just gone directly to 33? After all, that is where her objective was. She had Roses Pip-Boy, which was from Vault 33, and would have granted easy access. There are tons more. This show is a disaster.
@@BobSmith-kk4kp Here are some "answers", I guess. 1/ the turret miss because it is convenient, of course, and they always can say that this kind of things happens in the game in SVAV mode. Note : I am playin Fallout 4 right now and no turret ever missed me. They are annoyingly accurate. 2 / No reason. I bet there are some teams of different writers failing to communicate, or some writers who have new ideas from one episode to another and absolutely no script doctor. They surely believe that the gore and wow effects will distract the viewer of any flaws and that they will forget about it when seeing the next episodes. It might be the reason why they realesed the whole series at once. 3 / as more and more viewer are noticing this incoherence, they might come up with another reason in seson 2. Or not (see "answer" /2 above). 4 / Someone came up with the song idea at one point and nobody cares about fact checkings. See "answer" /2. 5 / I believe some 31 come as 32 in disguise for the marriage. Which leads to another problem. How 32 is ok with having unfrozen newcomers from 31 once in a while and lying to 33 for the wedding party ? Maybe 32 was a control of some sort ? But I guess "answer" /2 is more probable. 6 / This one is easy. She was retrieving luke skywalker's light saber for maz kanata. The writers don't care and you will probably never know. 7 / She knew her target was in 33 because she met him before, so it really makes no sense, unless maybe the access from the outside was easyer from 32 and she came up with the stupid wedding plan that eneded in a slaughter anyways. They must consume some interesting things on the writing room. Or maybe it is the showrunners who totally screw up afterwards, who knows...
@@nassiled You clearly put more thought into your answers than any of the writers put into the show, and I appreciated it. Number 6 got a genuine laugh from me. It really is remarkable that people have paying jobs to produce this utter drek. Hollywood has always been a horrible cesspit filled with creepy awfulness, but at least many of them used to have talent. Guess it is mostly just a cesspit now, with little of a silver lining. Seems like their must be tons of talented writers around, but clearly they are not interested in hiring them. Fallout deserved better than this, and so did we. I hope more people will start to think critically about this show, the mindless praise for it is pretty staggering.
@@BobSmith-kk4kp Thank you for your kind reply ! The recent low level of bad writing made me consider to become a writer myself, or maybe just a script doctor's assistant. It really started for me with "The force awakens" and the "who cares?" attitude which is post-modernist at its lowest and lazyest. On the other hand, I think nobody really wants to create an horrible show (except if you are trying to kill a genre or a franchise, which could be the case for some). I believe this is the result of the "new" and non efficient processes of the industry. Short deadlines, costly projects (mainly for marketing), the "showrunners" supervising an army of expendable directors, and a strong business agenda. The filming becomes acrobatic and nobody has the time to have a clear overview. Re-writing scenes on the set at the last minute is something I suspect to be more and more common. That said, Fallout is a miss but could have been a lot better with a little more effort/time/budget/ talent maybe. There is potential and I actually liked the actors and many aspects of it. This is why I take the time to point out the flaws. Praising this show blindly will not improve its quality.
I think you still missed some things in the show. About one of your two main criticisms: Cooper's family definitely *is not* in Vault 31. That's a vault for middle managers. Cooper is looking for another vault.
Correct: Barb said they'd be in the vault that oversees ALL of the other vaults. Vault 31 is not that vault, obviously. Betty and Hank were personal assistants prior to the bombs falling, they're not gonna be in the main vault.

Maximus=Fallout 2 A Wasteland native on a quest to prove himself to the wider world and secure a treasure for his tribe. Lucy=Fallout 3 Vault Dweller looking for their father who it turns out knows more about the outside world than he initially let on. The Ghoul=Fallout 4 A Pre-War veteran with extensive knowledge of power armor looking for their lost cryogenically frozen lost child.

my fiancé and i watched the show and finished it a couple days ago. i absolutely loved the show and all the easter eggs, and frequently info dumped on him since he hasn’t played any fallout games (beyond starting 4 and getting irritated that he spent a lot of time editing both nate and nora only for nora to die). however, loving the show doesn’t take away from the fact that there were things that didn’t make sense and took away from the narrative. thanks for the video pointing everything out!!
While the Fallout games do have a dark humor to them, I think the show leaned on comedy (not even good comedy) a bit TOO much. They tried to make it 50/50, when for me, the dark/comedic balance should be closer to 70/30. Good review. I thought the first episode and last episode were quite weak, but the stuff in the middle was decent. Not a bad show, but certainly not the second coming everyone is making it out to be. I agree that the New Vegas hook is strong enough to bring me back, otherwise, I'd just move on.
I agree on the Maldover thing: I thought it was pretty ham fisted to have her be “the good guy all along”. The show would’ve benefited from keeping her more morally ambiguous at the end - like she is a batshit mass murderer, but she genuinely wants to rebuild the NCR. It seemed like the show was a bit too much on her side at the end and forgot about her crazy cultiness
I dont think it calls her the good guy. Max says that everyone is just trying to save the world in their own way. There is no good side. Even her. Look what happened because she brought the fusion core online?
You got a lot wrong, let's go down the list. 1. Cooper, while buried, is being drip fed the same mysterious substance he takes later in the series, it's not a plot hole. The relatively low amount he needs to be fed while underground as opposed to the constant supply he needs could be chalked up to activity, the more active he is, the more he decays, this is consistent with ferals in F4 who are usually lying still like a corpse until a human walks by. 2. Vault 31 is not the admin vault where Cooper's wife is. It's explicitly stated that it's for junior management, senior management has their own control vault. 3. It actually is plausible that LA would still be wired 200 years later, that whole region was NCR central as in this timeline Shady Sands is in the LA ruins. 4. Surprised you weren't annoyed by how Cooper is able to bring down dozens of T-60s but Maximus still kicked his ass in Ep2 for most of the fight. He forgot about the weakness or needed a special bullet? Anyway, good ep. Farscape episode sometime?
4. He needed special bullets. He was not expecting Max in Filly and was unprepared. Since then he knew what he needed to have on hand aince clearly these guys were going to be in his area now
Thaddeus has the perk Ghoulification I think, is not rly a Ghoul. But he heals when exposed to radiation. They kinda do the Perk thing in the show for several characters. Maximus has that idiot Perk :D Because of that he doesnt know about sex or other things. Other Ghouls kinda died even without headshots. So its maybe just Cooper who is that tanky, you also have to take in mind that he is mostly always full on drugs, speak also MedX!
I know the “This series has always been silly” argument can be annoying if taken too far, but it’s a genuine point. Lets be honest, some fans take this franchise WAY too seriously. For my part, I felt it juggled the goofy and the grim very well, and implemented it in a way that fit the characters. What I mean by that is most of the silly humor comes either from vault dwellers or people’s reactions to vault dwellers, while darker humor is left to characters like The Ghoul. I hope i explained that well enough. I’m just happy I enjoyed the show and actually care about what happens next.
I would argue that while the series always had humorous moments, they existed in order to make the world even more bleak and depressing(mainly referring to Fallout 1, though fallout 2 mostly adhered to this).
@@Tr33ba1t this, 100% this. people who say it's always been THIS silly or unserious don't take into consideration that yes there are moments that are funny or silly but they're only seen that way by US, THE PLAYERS, but the characters and world take it all pretty seriously
Come on, that point about Moldaver sooo misses the mark. She's a 200 year old woman who had seen Vault-Tec sabotage her every attempt to make the world a better place. She saw Vault-Tec destroy not one but TWO civilizations in their insane attempt to control the future. She's a woman jaded and angry, of course she would have no issues unleashing raiders at a bunch of Vaut-Tec stoodges, in her eyes they are far from innocent. Is she a bad guy, yes, is she a good guy, also yes. Moldaver is an anti-villain.
It's obviously house bruh why tf do you think they focused on him in the pre-war? 😂 it makes sense for the literal ruler of New Vegas to still be the ruler in the show. Yes-Man ending is a fail safe device used by the New Vegas developers to give the player a way to beat the game if every other option becomes bugged or glitched. It should be taken as seriously as the bad ending in Fallout 1 where your player becomes a super mutant and vault 13 gets genocided by the master. An interesting ending to the game but obviously not canon
I think a lot of your criticisms leave a lot to be desired. Don't get me wrong, i don't think the show is perfect. It has minor issues and some holes that we'll have to wait until season 2 to see if they get filled. But outside of some of your nitpicks, I don't think your criticisms are super valid. 1.Pacing: You say that the show takes too long to get to things you already figured. As if storytelling was just giving information to the audience and nothing else. With Maximus and the Titus, Iwas wondering if you had ADHD because it's one scene thats a few minutes long, yet you act like it was the focus of the episode. And a character like Maximus that had been brought up by the brotherhood for years may need something more serious than "This guys a dick" to betray him. Maybe something like the threat of death, which is where the scene goes. With the Vault 31 conspiracy, you act as if the show doesn't expect you to know something's up and you're painstaking waiting for the characters to catch up to you. But but in the "When things look glum, vote 31" Norm knows something up with 31, you and he are on the same page. Norm, and presumably the audience, wants details. Why are they conspiring to control the other vaults like this? What makes them different? Is it an experiment? Something else? You just seem to think you're so smart for figuring out the start of the mystery and completly disregarding the rest of it. I just dont buy that the pacing of scenes or information to the audience is too slow. Except with the shows over use of slow-mo, I'll give you that one. 2. Morality: In a series famous for its ethical delemas, its interesting how quickly and certainly you are to convict Moldaver as the capital B bad guy becuase she raided the vault for the key to unlimited energy. I'll remind you in New Vegas 3 different factions and pretty damn blood thirsty and kill hundreds, possibly more, to secure the hoover dam. And thats not even unlimited energy, just a lot. And all she had to do to get it was raid the home base of her oldest, most viscious and hated enemy while also getting revenge for the greatest attrocity.commited against your people. Downside, some innocent, or as close as possible when dealing with vault tec citizens, will die. As far as ethical connundrumes in the fallout universe go, that seems like a pretty easy one to me. Is she a morally perfect angel who has done nothing wrong, fuck no. But you write her off really quickly for reasons i do not understand. Okay, there's more i kind of wanted to say, like how you thinking cold fusion is boring and it would have been better if we got a zombie robot is stupid, though I'm honestly not sure if you were being sarcastic or not. Or that i think your reading into some things incorrectly, such as Maximus's shitty sex ed, but im tired. I dont think your critisims here are very good. If anyone wants to disagree i can go on and we can discuss.
Thank u man. I'm watching his criticisms n I'm thinkin "is this guy slow? " so much of what he said was either wrong or just plain old stupid. The way he was talking about the pacing makes it sound like he caught a case of tik tok brain rot n cant sit n enjoy a show that isn't constant action n moving pieces. It angers me how stupid most of his points are
I agree. Anyone can have any opinion, but his problems with the show aren’t really problems. They might be problems for him, but they’re not really problems.
New Vegas makes reasonable points of why the Legion and the NCR wouldn’t control New Vegas. So, I like the idea that not only does Yes Man control New Vegas but also Victor. Victor would be a more reasonable and stable leader than a robot that says yes to every single request. Yes Man could say yes to the Brotherhood of Steel if they ask for Hoover Dam but Victor probably doesn’t say yes. I could also see a potential scenario where Mr. House rigged Victor to run a Mr. House AI in the event of his mortal death, so no matter what the House always wins.
What are you even talking about? Securitron AI is extremely basic, they're glorified computers that mimic human speech. They're Chat GPT with faces and voices, you might as well put a Mr. Handy in charge at that point. Like seriously, Yes Man or Victor? Yes Man is even more basic than the rest, the only reason he even has a personality is because it's the bare minimum Benny had to do to get it up and running. Yes Man is a tool, not a consciousness. Even fucking ED-E the Eyebot outsmarts them all.
They were not reasonable points, they were cliched criticisms of the Roman Empire overheard by media studies types and then repeated verbatim. I LOLed out loud out loud when you could just speech Lanius by going, "but the upkeep" and he was like "egad you're right, roll out lads." NV is ridiculous as hell.

I have to disagree on the series attempting to "sell" Moldaver's nobility. The Fallout universe showcases what happens when ordinary people have to do horrible things for the right reasons, and what happens when horribly misled people *think* they have the moral right to take action for the rest of us. Pay attention, and you'll realize Moldaver has no redemption arc. She did what she did, there's no excusing it - and she did it to give her people - and the memory of Shady Sands, in effect - a purpose. Of course, it only follows that the Brotherhood are going to turn the Cold Fusion tech to their own ends. There's no winner, here. New Vegas has several similar instances, as do Fallout 1 and 2. Your best choices typically come with a catch, and you're never allowed to play as the "Good Guy", per se. Powder Gangers might be initially violent, but siding with them reveals that not all of them are sociopaths or hardened criminals. Some of them are just poor SOBs with serious problems. Ceasar's Legion offers a complete and working social structure that only seems barbarous and wrong because the setting rightfully assumes the Courier is going to be disgusted by slavery or crucifixion. Only the Bethesda Fallouts tend to have narrative structures that simplify things, with Fallout 4 only having a few added moral wrinkles compared to Fallout 3's defacto stating that the East Coast BoS had gone full-on Paladin Build. If anything, I'm pleasantly surprised by how morally grey Amazon's take on Fallout has been. I was actually afraid that with Bethesda as producers, we'd get another case of an easily-hateable villain. The fact is the series does a great job at illustrating the murkiness of the series, and Cooper Howard is probably the best embodiment of that. If the only way I could get some answers about my wife and child's whereabouts involved turning into a centuries-old mercenary with Murder Hobo tendencies, then I'd do it in a heartbeat.
@@supershot9729to be fair. The enclave are the closest the fallout series ever gets to Irredeemable villains. Ive seen enclave defectors that are morally positive but for the most part the Enclave as a faction is villainous with a moustache twirl and a half.
Yeah I never saw Moldaver as good. We see she is feared by a lot of the Wasteland residents, she uses the raiders to attack the vault and she keeps Lucy's mother around as a ghoul pet when the merciful thing would have been to kill her (even Cooper did this when his ghoul friend turned feral)
@@kityhawk2000 I 100% agree, I really don't see how people find her to be the overwhelming good guy when so many story arcs prove her to be more selfish & morally ambiguous
She has no redemption arc because she does not need redeeming in the show's eyes. The only "redemption" she needs is in Lucy's eyes and that's just Lucy needing to see through the lies/propaganda she has been fed about Moldaver. The fact that Lucy and Lucy's mom choose Moldaver is enough to say that the show is on Moldaver's side. You could argue that yes, she did indeed murder innocents in the first episode, but the only time the show really questions the morals of that (while it has the full knowledge of her plan) is Lucy's dad saying it in the end - and he is clearly presented as only trying to keep the truth of Vault Tec from Lucy, so he's not really denouncing her as much as he is trying to protect himself (and he is clearly the villain so his ethics are not as weighty as a good character's would be).
I would like to point out that it doesn't say that shady sands was destroyed in 2277, it says it fell and then there's an arrow to a nuke that implies that the new happened later, Howard confirmed this! Edit: it's quite impressive that people actually don't understand that a civilization a country whatever can "fall" still be around and then be destroy later like that's a pretty sad that our educational system can't make people understand that, it's kind of sad but hey at least they have the internet and that internet drama!

@@horsegam because if you look throughout history many countries have fallen before they were destroyed and they're just a shell of themselves. Remember this is a starting point for many many people. Also when cooper was in the ground you can see his IV drip of the liquid above his grave obviously thats why he didn’t go feral you even showed that in the clip as you where complaining about it lol
Man, the idea that Todd Howard or anyone at Bethesda would want to ruin New Vegas, or people's memory of it or it's legacy or whatever, is just ludicrous. Fallout is still Bethesda's IP, why in the hell would they wanna self-sabotage now when so much more money, time, and resources are on the line for development? Shit's crazy, mang. Todd Howard has been on podcasts and interviews where he straight-up said he really liked New Vegas. Obsidian did an incredible job, which I presume was why Bethesda gave them the opportunity to make that game. Because they felt Obsidian could do the best job out of whatever other developers they were considering to offer that job to. Collectively as gamers we really gotta get our heads out of our asses, or mainly just step back from all the mob-think because that shit will make you stupid.
You were way too harsh on the exposition in the show. You have to remember that fallout fans isn’t the only one that is going to watch the show. All the vaults is evil things if not properly explain will confuse new audience. A lot of show doing exposition way worse, they talk about every little things, making a documentary almost. The fallout show not so much, it explains what need to be explain, that is relevant to the plots. Otherwise it would be extremly unenjoyable to a lot of people who never play fallout.

Thanks for making an actually balanced review of this show. Seen a lot of people going to crazy lengths to defend it's glaring problems and just as many people attacking it for convenient political reasons. In the end, I thought it was fun, but incredibly lazily written.
I’m not saying I like it, or don’t- a lot hangs on the execution- but a crazy fan theory that seems true is that possibly the BoS absorbed the Legion or vice versa somehow. Red and gold emblems, even more fascistic than the Brotherhood already is, weird about sex, Latin names. 🤷🏻 would definitely explain Max’s sex ed
I went in without knowing much about Fallout and of course if you play the game the plot points seem slow. However I wouldn’t have been able to understand the series if it didn’t take its time revealing information. The first three episodes dragged but after that it really picks up. When The Ghoul’s wife revealed her idea, I haven’t had a twist hit me so hard because of all the emotional implications for both humanity and the characters involved. That episode where Lucy and Max go into a vault kept me guessing and at the end, I had to conclude that the wasteland had changed Lucy in a noticeable way.
One thing that I loved is that they didn't even try to tell one of the existing game stories. They went with the same basic theme, sure. An innocent vault dweller has to learn how to survive in an unforgiving world to achieve a goal while meeting a colorful cast of surface dwellers. It didn't give us a story we have already played though. New people, new places, familiar world.
Also, am I the only one who is starting to think that Cooper Howard's wife is the new overseer of vault 33? Or its his daughter and She's just been thawed out for quite some time..
No. I accidentally paused on when Cooper was listening in on his wife and the secretary was credited as “Young Betty Pearson”. So they’re are different people. I only figured that out by chance so I can see where you’re coming from
Bryan Cranston as a down and out theme park owner who loses it in his desire for larger crowds and purposefully creates coasters that kill guests on mass
21:45 the show never tries to imply that moldaver is pure at heart or noble or some shit this is an unsubstantiated criticism, she is clearly a heartbroken revenge seeker who was trying to kill everybody in the vault. I mean the dude literally nuked her home city and someone she loves, why wouldnt she massacre the entire vault???
Great video. I really enjoyed the show, but yeah the finale was mid. In regards to the New Vegas stuff, while I love the game and agree it probably isn't retconned, I think your reason for believing it's still canon is slightly off. Just because the city is shown (potentially destroyed) to still physically exist, doesn't mean the story that took place there hasn't been retconned in favor of something else. Instead I'd say in response that the blackboard is inconclusive for several reasons. Firstly, the 2277 date and the mushroom cloud drawn in chalk are separated by an arrow which probably implies that "The Fall of Shady Sands" and it being nuked are separate events, with the bombing taking place post-Vegas (even though the cloud is the only thing on the board without a date attached). Secondly, the sign in front of shady sands' crater says "first capitol of the NCR" which maybe means that the capitol was moved before the bombing. That one I'm not sure for personally, because the whole reason shady sands was nuked to begin with is because it was the location of the NCR's government. Anyway again great video
It feels weird that moldaver doesn’t get any sort of call out or feels any regret about the slaughter of vault 31, she could try to justify it by believing everyone in the vault is just like Hank who willing to destroy others even innocents for the sake of their own goals (which adds a bit or irony how she destroys innocents for her selfless one) or it’s her hardened to try and save the world no matter the cost post the destruction of Shady Sands, but it doesn’t…
Genuinely disagree with the take that Moldaver was 'the good guy all along'. You can make the argument that she does the least vile stuff out of any faction, but she does some vile stuff to get what she wants. She dies getting exactly what she wanted, with a road of corpses behind her. Hell, i thought it was implied she was psychopathic for keeping the mother alive, despite being a ruined Ghoul. Thats why Lucy kills her; she needs to make tough choices, but wont let revenge and evilness ruin the upstanding morality she was raised under. Putting her mother down was the 'least bad' thing to do, even though it involved... killing her mother.
I think the issue is that the show never really addresses these points explicitly, while it is very explicit about the morality of the other factions. I got the impression that the show wanted me to think that it was sweet that Moldaver had kept Lucy around this whole time to see their plan through (in some way "restoring" Shady Sands). Lucy's moral dilemma in the end also doesn't have to do with Moldaver's actual reasons, it only had to do with her dad lying and Lucy having to take time to understand that Moldaver clearly wasn't evil. I think the show has been SO overt about morality (like they really had to have Vault Tec say the line "WE WILL DROP THE BOMB OURSELVES" to hammer home how evil they are), but the only one questioning Moldaver is Lucy's dad at the end who is arguably just trying to protect himself/his lies. (Obviously Lucy is also "questioning" Moldaver in earlier episodes but she doesn't have the full picture here.)
@@PrettyTigerlilly John Doman is also pretty old by now (he's Homelander's surrogate lab dad in The Boys) so if you wanted to depict a Caesar who survives but is a decrepit old man, that would work.
@@PrettyTigerlilly Yeah, so had Mr House in 3 of 4 endings. We still saw him in Season 1. They'd need to explain the history of the region to people who haven't played New Vegas, and Caesar is an essential part of that history. I'd be shocked if he wasn't in any flashbacks.
14:55 There are more problems with this show in regards of retconning than just "boo hoo, NCR was nuked". I love all fallouts before 76 and I have no problem with NCR's capital getting nuked. The problems were: 1) It happened 3 years before the Fallout New Vegas even began (I am willing to forgive this because it could be a production mistake) 2) The reason for it getting nuked was really stupid 3) NCR reduced to raiders and they lost to BoS somehow 4) New Vegas being completely destroyed. Even in the shot before the end credits the city and it's area is lifeless, abandoned and has no electricity And then there are other fallout1&2 retcons: 5) Boneyard just does not exist 6) Ghouls are magical zombies now. Also they dont need food and water except when they do. 7) Ghoul serum 8) Vault Tec nuked the America for profits (???). Also that whole meeting retcons Mr House's character and Sinclair. 9) Enclave is back, somehow 10) BoS is now Adeptus Mechanicus that wants to help people So, overall, even though Fallout 1,2, New Vegas weren't retconned (supposedly) everything you did before doesn't matter and had no impact and everything you learned from them was a lie. Meanwhile, Todd doesnt ruin 3 or 4 because they are his fallouts. Also naming the ghoul Howard and making him the origin of Vault Boy was just idiotic vanity.
I also kinda saw Cooper's character as a nod to raul from new Vegas as well. The whole ghoul cowboy bit. I guess the drug addict ghoul part is a little bit of Hancock too
I dont agree with all your criticisms but appreciate the quality of this review overall as your points were articulated and reasoned and much better than a lot of other criticisms some youtubers have brought up which seem to mainly be "New Vegas Reeeeeeeee" or "women and black people in a show Yuck!" That said I argue that the story about vault 31 was not massively foreshadowed in my opinion. Sure we knew something sketchy was up with 31 and that they seemed to be influencing the other vaults but we didn't know that it was full of Vault-tec employees in cryosleep and I liked how this tied in with the Bud's Buds scheme we heard mentioned in a flashback scene. Also I don't think the NCR woman was really shown to be a good person. She more seemed to me like someone who used to be good but got twisted after the destruction of Shady Sands and was prepared to do whatever it took to acheive her aims hence why she used the raiders to attack the Vault. Lastly I don't think the show explicitly confirms that Vault-tec starts the war. The conversation between the CEOs more shows they were prepared to do this not that they actually did. In fact I think they might have planned to do this but events overtook them and the war started earlier than they expected. A big reason I think this is that we see the bombs drop while Cooper and his daughter were at a birthday party. I definitely do not think his wife would have allowed her daughter to go to that party if she knew the bombs were about to drop she would have probably already been in a vault if so.
Yeah, I don't think they actually dropped a bomb. China launched the first nukes in canon. And them not launching them would also explain why Hank had a nuke lying around to launch.
Solid review, glad to see one from someone who actually played the games. While it was easy for me to guess Vault-Tec’s malicious intentions, it definitely hit harder for my friends who had no knowledge of the lore going into the show. Overall a very cheesy and fan servicey season, but I still loved it. Can’t wait for the Severance retrospective ❤️ season 2 can’t come soon enough
There is only one correct Roller Coaster Tycoon story, especially with Bryan Cranston as the star. A madman builds the world's best theme park only to magically turn the whole place into a death trap while at max capacity.
If Pete Hines and Todd Howard had creative control, or worse, actively contributed to the writing, that would explain why adults behave like six year olds, the terrible sexual jokes, and the lack of any meaningful story beyond a Hollywood Macguffin. Watching a dude fly from The Boneyard to New Vegas without any head-gear and an unlimited fuel supply in a busted set of T-60B, showing up to a New Vegas Strip that looked even smaller than the in-game New Vegas Strip, was absolutely wild to me. I was going to give the show an 8/10 until that last episode. They should have done the Vault-Tec nuke reveal way, way later when Lucy comes across The Glow or some other Artificial Intelligence machine. They really, really premature-ejaculated all over themselves. Edit: Vault-Tec was going to be working closely with Robco to begin interstellar resource acquisition on other planets and a lot of the Vault-Tec experiment parameters were justified as a way of filtering out different colony-failure scenarios. Heading up to a Space Station would have been a part of Van Buren, the isometric cancelled Fallout 3.
11:50 I think the point of this is to show that the Brotherhood DOESN'T have any sex ed. The way Maximus talks about it is like what you hear from middle school boys on the playground. I think they're trying to show that he was basically taught nothing about it and his only frame of reference is what he's heard, which isn't a lot because he's not too popular. It's also possible that other Brotherhood initiates just lied to him because it was funny. Not sure how you could see that scene and assume that it was the Brotherhood that told him his dick would explode like a pimple.
I'd argue that the NCR ending being canon for the show makes perfect sense. Like you said, Slip, they were already spread way too thin and had plenty of internal problems. So if Shady Sands got nuked and the government fell apart, it makes sense that New Vegas would be left to fend for itself, and, thanks to the Courier killing Mr. House, it wouldn't have his Securitron aemy protecting it anymore, either. So no wonder it looks like the city's going through hard times.
Yeah, but that brings a whole mess of other problems like where's all the brahmin barons? Same with Gunrunners or Van Graffs, or the rest of the towns in the NCR. They were a multi-state nation with hundreds of thousands of people, enough to field an army of 120K +. If at an extreme, 1 in 3 were soliders in the NCR, where are they all?
@@tanepukenga1421 Well, the NCR covers a huge chunk of California, and in the show we never saw anything north of the Grapevine. Might be that Vault City, the Necropolis, etc. are holding together just fine, but no one sees much value in trying to resettle L.A. again. (Since the show also moved Shady Sands waaaay further south.)
@@TheNovakv23 See, that's what New Vega's did so well that the show wasn't as good on. Building an outer support base for the worldbuilding. The old Interplay team thought about things like "where are they getting all the food? Better lore up some cow barons or farmers. What about other towns nearby, wouldn't they pop up from time to time? Lets mention how they're supporting themselves defense-wise.". It's so sad they missed simple things like a single shot of smoke on the horizon and a line like, "Oh, that's Necropolis. It's out of our way though". Just not enough forethought in the excitement to get it out early.
@@tanepukenga1421 As a resident of what becomes the Necropolis, I feel like I should point out that there's no way they'd be able to see smoke from LA. Im just really excited for the roller coaster tycoon show😂. “I want a coaster that slams the guest into the ground at 120 mph now why wont you let me do that”😊
I don't think that the vault where Goocey's father is from is the same one where the C-Level Vault Tec guys are. Vault 31 is Bud's Buddies experiment. So no, Cooper won't find his wife there.
Something that annoyed me about Moldaver. She needed Lucy to use as leverage to get the code from Hank. Why did Moldaver leave Lucy behind in the vault if she was essential to her plan?
Lucy wasn't essential to her plan. Moldaver was presumably trying to get the code out of Hank for two weeks straight, but he obviously held out. When Lucy happened to show up at the observatory it presented an opportunity for Moldaver to exploit to give her a better chance at having Hank give her the code. Remember, Moldaver was expecting someone else to show up with Wiltzig, not Lucy with just his head.
@@Boy-fv8jw Right, but the point is that Lucy was valuable to Moldaver from the very beginning. Given their past relationship, there's no reason for Moldaver to leave her in the vault, if only so that Lucy's mom could see her daughter again.
@@TPubbieI think Moldaver presumed that Lucy would stay in the vault where (theoretically) she’d be safe. Maybe once the power was restored she intended to tell Lucy and Norm the whole story in hopes that they’d consider returning to the NCR.
@@starkman78 Yet that makes Moldaver's line, "You should see it sometime", paradoxically against her own agenda then. The fact the fans have to come up with justifications for the writing and dialogue choices make it pretty clear the writing for the show was not good.
@@tanepukenga1421how is that “paradoxical?” Did I not say that Moldaver might have hoped that Lucy would want to come back to the NCR once it was up and running again? Remember, Rose wanted to raise her children there and Rose clearly meant a lot to Moldaver.
Mister House must be the cannon for new vegas on the show. Considering he has appeared at the meeting at Vault Tec, and that Lucy's father was a pre war Vault Tec employee that survived on cryo, he might be there to seek him out.
Man, you using that clip with the power armor circular valve flexing because it's made of cosplay-style materials just reminded me how much I noticed that the first time and was taken out of the moment. I kept subconsciously looking for other moments when its clear material softness would show up again. 😞
I really enjoyed the show, however my biggest gripe characters find each other so easily. It just seems too convenient. Maximus is nearly dying in his power armor, oh hey theres lucy just finding him under a fucking bridge. 7/10
I’ve always loved your retrospectives and it was great to have one so quickly. Short review but short show. Like you, I joined with 3. Although New Vegas is the superior title, I thought 3 gets an unfair amount of… maybe not hate, but certainly… disappointment. I like the show, I live bouncing between the characters, the vault and before the war. The characters are fun but also engaging and it looks fantastic. Total agreement with you that there were enough nods to the games to feel fun without smashing you in the face with every reference.
Thank you! Finally a review that points out the illogical things! Everybody else is praising the series to heaven. It's still good. But very far from perfect, or brilliant or whatever they call it.
New Vegas having a canon ending is unimportant however, what is important is that season 2 could introduce the Kings and the King himself should be played by Bruce Campbell.
10:14 i mean kinda i can remember max getting scholded by the scholar for not being able to identify the pre war items in class. and even when lucy makes a point about “using pre war tech to find pre war tech
Honestly, as someone who has a pretty surface level knowledge of Fallout, I found a lot of the reveals at the end pretty gripping. It never occurred to me that vault tec ended the world themselves. At the very least, I agree with you on how they tried to make Mulldover (however you spell that) some secret noble character. I'm really just excited to see more of Cooper in season 2 lol
Someone has fun with the New Vegas conspiracy theories. Slip Maker goes from "NV fans jump at every shadow" to "Todd Howard plotted NV's demise in series two I just know it!" Love the self awareness of that joke at the end.
All of the vault tech lore reveals might’ve been obvious for people that know the series but I never predicted a single one completely. Also I was genuinely convinced maximus was going to heal his knight and get his ass beat anyway for some reason lmao
One thing that I can't stand is when the bad guy turns out good at the end, and it's like the writers forgot how awful that character was. A redemption arc is great, but I think Nolan tends to skip steps on the way there. I remember feeling that way about some of the characters in HBOs "Westworld".
Yeah I wasn't a big fan of the last episode, either(and that damn chalk board a few episodes before). Man, I never thought I would have preferred Ulysses to be the one to destroy shady sands over Lucy's dad. Also cowboy cooper is the best. Season 2 will be make or break for me(but I truly did enjoy my time with season 1). I hope the moldaver is truly dead and fallout tactics gets some love(vault 0 and the mid west BoS were dope). Imperfect but fun. On a side note Emil accidentally made the fallout 4 guy one of the war criminal from the fallout 1 tv intro(the laughing guy not the executioner).
Well they're definitely struggling with writing the games and coming up with a different plot idea, 4th time around for "I need to find my special person" in the series
76 was a joke at launch, and Starfield isn't great. Good initial sales, but the modding community has somewhat given up on Starfield and the main story isn't very good. Even though those are from different arms of Bethesda, it's still two bad games after one another, and if TES6 is bad, Bethesda might struggle in more than just reputation.

The joke with Brian Cranston as a roller coaster tycoon made me laugh way too hard
The slow mo kinda makes sense if you think about how you would incorporate VATS into a live action Fallout series
I didn’t mind the slow mo in shooting scenes. But I didn’t need close up slow mo shots of Maximus’s face every time he looked surprised or sad/mad
😮🤯
I was just trying to trace the train of logic for making that particular creative choice for the show from the game.
I get that but the show ruins it by showing one of them jerking under a blanket
Just a few of the many things I noticed:
Why did the sophisticated Enclave mini-gun turret miss the Doctor at nearly point blank range even though he was shuffling quite slowly?

When we gettin da Sopranos Retrospective
Goddammit. Now I want Cranston's RC Tycoon.
Well, I wouldn’t call her a good guy, more mortally gray if anything. She may have had a point, but she also slaughtered all those people in vault 33
Plus, how the hell is she still alive after 200 years??
@@NeverSaySandwich1 likely a plot point for season two
@@NeverSaySandwich1how was the sole survivor still alive after 200 years? Cryogenic pod
Since then he knew what he needed to have on hand aince clearly these guys were going to be in his area now
I think it’s implied he needed AP ammo
Can you do burn notice and psych your next retrospective series review. Those two showers were phenomenal both on USA network same as white collar.
It kind of reminds me of people's reaction to the Witcher tv-series. It's more based on the books which are more tongue in cheek than the games.
Yes Man ending being the likely cannon is so hype.
Doubtful, why introduce House and show that's the reason Hank went to New Vegas if it's just going to reveal he's dead?
I disagree. Why are you retarded? All I wanna know?
Thank u man. I'm watching his criticisms n I'm thinkin "is this guy slow? " so much of what he said was either wrong or just plain old stupid. The way he was talking about the pacing makes it sound like he caught a case of tik tok brain rot n cant sit n enjoy a show that isn't constant action n moving pieces. It angers me how stupid most of his points are
I agree. Anyone can have any opinion, but his problems with the show aren’t really problems. They might be problems for him, but they’re not really problems.
Why are you all so retarded?
That slip guy sounds like nitpicking for nitpicking's sake
New Vegas makes reasonable points of why the Legion and the NCR wouldn’t control New Vegas. So, I like the idea that not only does Yes Man control New Vegas but also Victor. Victor would be a more reasonable and stable leader than a robot that says yes to every single request. Yes Man could say yes to the Brotherhood of Steel if they ask for Hoover Dam but Victor probably doesn’t say yes. I could also see a potential scenario where Mr. House rigged Victor to run a Mr. House AI in the event of his mortal death, so no matter what the House always wins.
In yes man's ending he gets an upgrade that gives him a back bone. Pls learn the lore before saying dumb shit👍

I absolutely loved this show! Me and my best friend watched it together and we were both so hyped about literally everything bc we both love the games sooooo much. It was so insane to turn my brain off and inject pure Fallout into my system. Everything wasn't absolutely perfect but for a show I thought was gonna end up being garbage when it was announced, I was absolutely thrilled with it and can't wait until the next season!
Dude, love your work.
I know that was said a million times to you, but... we need The Sopranos retrospective from you.
You are our only hope!
Pretty please?
Bro I agree with most but come on the enclave are literally killing puppies in the first scene you see them in, that's cartoon villain level stuff
Maybe if there's this much confusion about it it could've been done much better
why would they call something the fall of shady sands if nothing really happened til later. it's like saying the fall of Pompeii took place years before the volcano went off
@@horsegam because if you look throughout history many countries have fallen before they were destroyed and they're just a shell of themselves. And then they were finished off by some final attack whatever, just so happens in this particular case it was a nuke that finished off shady sands after the many years of its downfall, at least that was implied, that's how I took it anybody else can obviously interpret it anyway they want.
@@horsegam Why would they have a picture of the city for it and not the mushroom cloud if it was the same event?
That's like saying Hiroshima and Nagasaki fell in 1868

Matt Berry must be protected at all costs
I feel like you rightfully so aren’t look at this from the prospective of a new comer to the franchise i know alot of people you where genuinely surprised that vault tech was as evil as they are. You are saying that you found it painful that they are “dragging” out the reveal but thats because you already knew that you are knowledgeable in the lore my GF and friend are not and they where super enthralled by the mystery aspects of the show.
This long of a hiatus I feel we must be getting a FULL retrospective on Shameless 😂

New people, new places, familiar world.
would you eventually do a retrospective about person of interest?
Insane turnaround on this one Mr slip maker
Also, am I the only one who is starting to think that Cooper Howard's wife is the new overseer of vault 33? Or its his daughter and She's just been thawed out for quite some time..
No. I accidentally paused on when Cooper was listening in on his wife and the secretary was credited as “Young Betty Pearson”. So they’re are different people. I only figured that out by chance so I can see where you’re coming from
Betty was a secretary in the scene were Cooper meets Hank prewar
Bryan Cranston as a down and out theme park owner who loses it in his desire for larger crowds and purposefully creates coasters that kill guests on mass
21:45 the show never tries to imply that moldaver is pure at heart or noble or some shit this is an unsubstantiated criticism, she is clearly a heartbroken revenge seeker who was trying to kill everybody in the vault. I mean the dude literally nuked her home city and someone she loves, why wouldnt she massacre the entire vault???
7:12 holy shit he is a lot like Dean maybe we will see him in a season 2 prewar scene that could be cool
I think that John Doman could come back for a live-action Caesar if they want. I'd love to see it.
Caesar had a brain tumor in New Vegas, which is set 10 years before the show, that character is long passed away.
@@Horltum Oh he absolutely could be seen in a flashback. I thought you meant as a regular character.
@@PrettyTigerlilly Yeah. While I guess they always could canonise the courier removing his tumour, I don't really want to see that.
14:55 There are more problems with this show in regards of retconning than just "boo hoo, NCR was nuked". I love all fallouts before 76 and I have no problem with NCR's capital getting nuked. The problems were:
1) It happened 3 years before the Fallout New Vegas even began (I am willing to forgive this because it could be a production mistake)
2) The reason for it getting nuked was really stupid
3) NCR reduced to raiders and they lost to BoS somehow
4) New Vegas being completely destroyed. Even in the shot before the end credits the city and it's area is lifeless, abandoned and has no electricity
And then there are other fallout1&2 retcons:
5) Boneyard just does not exist
6) Ghouls are magical zombies now. Also they dont need food and water except when they do.
7) Ghoul serum
8) Vault Tec nuked the America for profits (???). Also that whole meeting retcons Mr House's character and Sinclair.
9) Enclave is back, somehow
10) BoS is now Adeptus Mechanicus that wants to help people
So, overall, even though Fallout 1,2, New Vegas weren't retconned (supposedly) everything you did before doesn't matter and had no impact and everything you learned from them was a lie. Meanwhile, Todd doesnt ruin 3 or 4 because they are his fallouts.
Also naming the ghoul Howard and making him the origin of Vault Boy was just idiotic vanity.
I'm so hyped for season 2
Why didn't Lucy's brother just threaten to kick the robobrain?
No one in the wasteland are the good guys. They are all just surviving. Being a good person is a luxury in those conditions.
The Minutemen are never shown doing anything remotely evil, although that's the Bethesdaverse
The mountains separating Los Angeles and the Central Valley are pretty dang big.
Absolutely agree with whatcha said, just sharing some perspective on the geography of the region.
Considering he has appeared at the meeting at Vault Tec, and that Lucy's father was a pre war Vault Tec employee that survived on cryo, he might be there to seek him out.
bryan cranston as The Rollercoaster Tycoon would go absolutely insane i feel like
Man, you using that clip with the power armor circular valve flexing because it's made of cosplay-style materials just reminded me how much I noticed that the first time and was taken out of the moment.
Do you plan to make a retrospective on HBO’s Barry? I feel like that show would be right up your alley
Why would Lucy's brother go into stasis when he just could release all the management and thus force brain to open the door?
The nerds are out in force
I think a lot of the issues stem from being a fan. As a non Fallout player, I thought te reveals and pacing were fine
That Mr Plinkett reference had me on the floor
Slip Maker goes from "NV fans jump at every shadow" to "Todd Howard plotted NV's demise in series two I just know it!"
Love the self awareness of that joke at the end.
Great, now I want to see Cranston as the Rollercoaster Tycoon ^^.
All of the vault tech lore reveals might’ve been obvious for people that know the series but I never predicted a single one completely. Also I was genuinely convinced maximus was going to heal his knight and get his ass beat anyway for some reason lmao
PLEASE do a video on JUSTIFIED it’s one of the most underrated shows ever
Video so good I just assumed I was already subbed, lemme fix that mistake!
Waiting for Slipmaker to do a review on Peaky Blinders, I feel it is a series he definitely can get into if he hasnt tried it yet
when people say bethesda is "struggling" I don't think they understand what that word means.
I mean, maybe he meant in terms of reputation? But yeah, they definitely aren't financially struggling.
Struggling to make a good video game is what they (accurately) mean.
