      Also Dany 100% was molested most of her life by her brother, we literally see some of it in the show. Cersei just being Queen after killing the High Sparrow (who was widely liked) and Margaery (who was widely liked) and her own uncle (kinslaying is supposed to be a big deal) and a quarter of the city kind of ruined that whole plot arc for me. Like.. things like that used to have consequences and know they don't, which makes everything kind of pointless.

      there was an entire season worth of consequences we could have seen from Cersei doing this - she killed a military strategist and patriarch of her house, the king, the queen who the smallfolk loved, the head of the religion that dominates the smallfolk, and a bunch of other characters, and there were ZERO fucking consequences for it lmfao

      Even better when at the end seemingly the only purpose of there still being any Dothraki left is for two of them to nonchalantly stroll past Jon on his way to the ship that will take him back to the Wall without doing anything, even though Daenerys declared ALL members of her horde to be her bloodriders, meaning their only purpose in life should currently be to hunt down and slaughter her killer and then commit suicide themselves.
      Also we're supposed to buy that there would be no serious repercussions for the introduction of this culture of tribal, nomadic horseback raiders who largely don't speak the local language, openly practise slavery, operate on a might makes right system of ethics and politics and don't answer to any Westerosi authority anymore. Yeah, I'm sure those guys will just abandon their centuries old way of life and bow to a king and lords that they have no reason to respect and won't be causing problems for the smallfolk anywhere.

    What I think makes Robb's death during the Red Wedding most effective isn't that we care about Robb dying so much as we care about **Catelyn's son** dying. This whole region was really Catelyn's story, as she was the POV character in the book and present for most of the intrigue in Robb's camp and the West. So when you see Robb go down, you're really grieving with Catelyn, and it primes you for her death as well. I'll never forget Michelle Farley's scream.

    One of my biggest complaints about the show is that Cersei basically blew up the Vatican killing the pope who was really popular with the people and the queen who was really popular with the people. How the hell does she become queen after this. Sure she has an army, but there are no mentions of people rioting or even protesting, meanwhile in season 2 Joffrey almost dies because the people aren't happy. The writers just forgot about consequences for a cool moment.

It wasn't even a good surprise like a shocking or impactful plot twist, more of a "huh, really now" moment. Also, why did Tyrion make good on that promise? The whole Sansa and Arya set up Littlefinger subplot is so good on paper, but it really didn't land in execution. Like yes, season 6 ends with Sansa knowing she has to get rid of Littlefinger, and I don't think she could have done so by just snitching on him, so the idea of her laying out a trap, letting him think he was the one manipulating them was such a cool idea that wasn't given its due.
    Cause basically it all boils down to Bran just saying "yah it's all true" when Petyr is accused. The whole plot would have been so much more satisfactory if we had been misdirected as an audience, but with the last reveal showing us how in retrospective she was collecting the evidence and laying out the trap.
    This was the plot that could have so fully made use of Sansa and Arya's skills. Like imagine if Littlefinger had been all season believing he was talking with his agents keeping an eye on the sisters, to be revealed that Arya had been impersonating them for most of the time.

    • @stackspace
      @stackspace 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I like the idea of Arya impersonating Petyr's agents, but I always thought this plot should've been a call back to what Sansa learned from Tyrion, which is that you can be dishonorable to achieve honorable ends.
      It wouldve been so sick if Sansa had played Petyr and Aria. Because of Brans's logic-breaking power of knowing everything everywhere all the time, the plot wouldve had to have been that Sansa "kidnaps" Bran and tells Petyr it was Aria explaining she had spent so much time with the faceless men and the Hound and she wanted his power for herself. Alternatively, she tells Aria it was Petyr. She lays all of the evidence herself until Aria kills Petyr and then Sansa reveals she took Bran and needed Aria to kill Baelish. This would obviously hurt their relationship but Bran would explain that Petyr was too clever and there was no other way.
      I have written this over and over again in my head due to sheer frustration with how this plot played out.
      I agree with pretty much everything you said, though. A coupla jabronies in TH-cam comments coulda made this series actually worthwhile.

      @alonsogonzalez7539 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@stackspace Mmm, I do think that thematically is just stronger if the sisters are working together, you know? To show that Petyr couldn't destroy the Starks. So while he spends the whole season believing he's finally succeeding in isolating Sansa from her sister, it truly is that both of them have been playing him.
      I just really like the idea of Sansa coming up with the plan and Aria lending her skills. So all they both learn in their journeys comes together, to avenge their family and make Petyr pay.

      Meh, I think any plot Arya is in is almost entirely ruined. Like Bran she's too much of an xmen character for the plot to really have any suspense. Also Petyr after season 4 is just too much of a mustache twilry villian, he's like the obvious bad guy we used to see in those cartoons when we were 10, he's just too corny. And his plans are idiotic after a certain point they don't make any sense. Honestly this plot point was a waste of space, they were trying so hard to give Arya and Sansa something to do it felt way too forced and convoluted.

    One note - Dany doesn't have a reaction of disgust to sleeping with her nephew because that's sort of what Targs did. A LARGE number of them married their direct sibling. Plus uncle/aunt married to niece/nephew is already established elsewhere in the cannon for her family so she likely grew up just thinking of it as normal. Her brother HAD to have spent the first 14 years of her life doing nothing but telling her stories of their history as she seemed to know a hell of a lot about it for someone who hasn't seen a member of her family outside her brother or ANYONE really who knew them since she was a literal infant so no doubt he included this part as well. There’s honestly not much reason for him to even be mad- the people aren’t going to revolt so who cares if they find out about her escapades, and if she marries Daemon, their affairs before their union wouldn’t matter to the other houses. I think the best way to have ended Dany's story would have been for her to burn the Red Keep and accidentally blow up King's Landing in the process. It's been well-established that there's still a tonne of wildfyre stashed away by King Aerys; burning the Red Keep could ignite the stashes and kill the whole city. We'd get to see her deal with that guilt, which is about 20x more interesting than what we got.

      There's a theory that was the original plot. You can SEE where they CG'd in green fire (aka wildfire), which feels so out of place in the version we got - not to mention, that is literally what Emilia was told they were filming. @@LordofFullmetal Also in the scene where Drogon is specifically burning kids in the streets you can see Dany isn't riding him so Emilia didn't film that scene and they just added it with CGI later. And they lied to Kit Harington too, they told him back in season 3 that Jon would be the one who kills the Night King, sometime in season 6 they changed their mind and told Maisie Williams it would be Arya but never told Kit anything. He didn't find out until the table read of 8x03! Remember just 4 episode earlier he was having another stare down with the NK after Dany saved him...All for nothing! And D&D knew it would be Arya but still wrote that scene in 7x06, I'd be pissed if I was Kit tbh. Jon really just became a plot device for them which became way more obvious in season 8.
      What I realised is those writers just didn't care. Didn't care about lying to the actors, didn't care about the story, the show, the viewers, the actors, everyone involved in making it etc to spend more time on it which HBO was handing out like free Candy plus free money! They didn't care about putting in enough effort to give the biggest show on TV the ending it deserved and I think they knew season 8 was an inconsistent, nonsensical, illogical mess before they put it out. But they just didn't care. That's what makes it still sad until this day, this thing we all loved so much was being handled by people who just didn't care about it.

It was a terrible attempt at setting up the made queen, that they knew was coming (The actor didn't). Following the books she has like 4 chapters, so they kind of just made shit up.
    Season 1 is really tight because it follows a book that was supposed to be one of three. The “being like his father” aspect was with how he treated the Karstarks. He only needed to go back and grovel with Walder Frey in Season 3 because he executed Lord Karstark, despite everyone telling him not to. Honour compelled him to do so, but the consequences were that he lost half his army and the only house he could replenish them with were the Freys.

    So in the scripts for the massacre at kings landing, Dany was supposed to do exactly what Slip Maker suggested he thought she'd do in the video - start massacring lannister soldiers while making her way towards Cersei.
    Certainly not exactly moral, but not stone cold evil either. However, the dragonfire set off the wildfire that the mad king had placed around the city, and that is what causes the thousands of deaths.
    Not only is this more in line with what we already know about Dany as a character, but it makes her death that much more tragic when you consider that Jon may have killed her when it became apparent to him she felt no remorse despite the deaths that she caused - accidentally, but still. It adds some moral greyness that was absolutely needed.
    The worst thing though? I read somewhere that David and Dan changed the massacre in post production. Emilia Clarke believed that up until the premiere screening of the episode, what was in the script was what was going to happen on screen. That's why we don't see Emilia Clarke herself after the massacre begins - because it was an edited CGI fest that wasn't in line with what Dany was supposed to be actually doing. It would have been interesting to see her reaction to the wildfire blowing up the city, and I reckon that's what they filmed, and it'll be on the cutting room floor somewhere. Honestly, the embarrassment and disappointment she must have felt when she saw it for the first time must have been overwhelming. Poor Emilia. Deserved so much better.

    I will say in the books Tyrion tenure as Hand of the King is far less him being 12 steps ahead, as him barely being more skillful than Ned. He manages to get over the more incompetent players that are Cersei and Pycell, mostly by doing so alienating potential allies, Cersei being his sister and Pycell a Lannister lackey. His attempt at Justice just see him removing Littlefinger pawn to have him replacing him with Varys pawn, and Varys and Littlefinger running circles around him while Tyrion is too busy self congratulating. For example when Tyrion do his letters plot to find the traitor who give information to Cersei Varys outright tell Tyrion he know exactly what he’s doing yet Tyrion still think he played him for some reasons, and for it he end up having to reward with an absurdly large Lordship to Littlefinger for what was overall relatively minor actions. And he’s still very much a villain. He knows he work for the bad side but doesn’t care, he doesn’t have any regrets for the war crimes his side his committing, etc.

The main one for me is Cersei, in the books one of her absolute key character traits is that every man wants her and she uses that sex appeal to manipulate them. I don’t think she does this once in the series and I’m not sure Lena Headey was the right cast for that personality type. She did fantastic with what she was given though.
      Other more minor characters who were seriously miscast were Mance, Renly/Loras (Renly in particular is butchered in the show), Mace Tyrell (who is a bumbling idiot rather than a proud and prickly lord) and Jorah (who they make farrrrr more likeable in the show.

    You are the one person I’ve actually heard using the word “myriad” grammatically correctly in a sentence! Bravo!

    We stan Emilia Clark bc she has 2 brain aneurisms between 2 different seasons and still came back to slay Queen Daenerys. There are very few episodes where her acting is ehh even after all that going on in her personal life.

    Stannis saves the Night's Watch by defeating Mance Rayder and then Mance's army becomes Jon Snow's army which he uses to recapture Winterfell in the Battle of the Bastard's. Also when Stannis is attacking Winterfell it gives Sansa and Theon a chance to escape. So stannis still had a part to play.

    I'm not sure why the Rachet and Clank 2 Megacorp soundtrack plays in the background of this but, for the sheer nostaglia, and for the bizarre sense of pride I felt at immediately knowing a song from a game I haven't played in 15, years I very, very much appreciate it

      Season 7 should have been 10 episodes and the Dany vs Cersi war. Season 8 should have all been the White Walkers and Jon vs Night King

    She isn't creeped out by doing her nephew because she's from a family that normalized incest.
    To her it's likely only creepy because he's only remotely related not a true brother.
