Christopher Hitchens - The Best of the Hitchslap - Part Two

  • I have been working on this video for some time, and had planned to upload it today as the rendering completed just yesterday morning. When I heard the sad news of Professor Hitchens' death late in the evening, I struggled with the thought of canceling this upload. It seemed somehow opportunistic to release a video so soon after, even if this coordination was not intentionally planned in advance. The beginning of this video especially carries a different meaning now that this news has reached all of us.
    In the end, I decided I could cope with this feeling of unease in order to share more of his thoughts, provide a moment of reflection, and pay humble tribute to the man that is an inspiration to me and so many others. If the first video was a general critique of religion, this edition is aimed at responses to common complaints non-believers hear again and again.
    Mr. Hitchens, your contributions to the struggle for liberty, equality, rationality, and freedom will never be forgotten. Your forcefulness, wit, and intelligence gave me the strength and courage to argue for these ideals in my own life. That you have done the same for so many is your great and immortal contribution to mankind. These seemingly small victories are what change the world; one action, one mind at a time, until the tide cannot be held back any longer. Your actions and words have moved us ever closer to that point. Thank you.

    His death was devastating to so many of us. I think Hitch was the most important and influential public intellectual of our time. I've read every book and letter I could find and I've never been let down by his tremendous and graceful writing. We all miss you Christopher.

      Well the afterlife claims are useless as no one can prove any of it, so I will not waste the one life I'm know for sure I have worrying and stressing about a place I might end up for simply thinking for a split second that the holy spirit doesn't exist! How preposterous is that!
      You are right, I am amazingly happy that his work will live on and inspire people, I just wish He was around to write more, and talk and debate more, I mean, I just miss him, and it's extremely sad, as he was one of my heroes.

      I agree with both of you. Christopher Hitchens' death was absolutely devastating, and it is a damn shame that we do not have him around anymore to teach the world in a way that only he could. Yet we should also rejoice at the fact that his work does indeed live on, and continues to change the lives of so many people. His debates and books are one of, if not the main works that converted me to Atheism.

      @MrAristaeus 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      FINIKY civility is important. It leads to coherency. What you’re advocating is some kind of animalistic freedom. Anti-theism is much more than that. (Think about it, animals - creatures of the animal kingdom - aren’t anti-theists or atheists in the same way that they are not theists or things capable of following theistic doctrine). Civility towards your fellow humans, even the incredible obtuse and uncivil ones, promotes equality which allows viewpoints to be heard (that can then be embraced or discarded on their merit). You’ll note the civility of Hitchens throughout these clips. You should do the same, not because you have been told to do so or wish to blindly follow him, but because rigorous intellectual debate is enabled and everyone benefits. That’s a contract unaffected by religious beliefs. You should honour it.

    He changed my life... for the better. I used to live my life, watching myself instead of being myself. I was taught that I was always being watched, so I lived my life with the experience of watching myself as if I was watching and judging my behavior like God saw me and what would he think... Watching all of the videos I could, including the debates for 4 months... last year 2015 was a freeing year for me. Since then, I haven't experienced life as a 3rd person in quite a long time. Now, the drivel I was fed all my life is comical. I teach my daughter the truth, instead of fantasy.

    My favorite section is 20:32 to 22:22, which is nothing less than an answer to the question "what is the meaning of life?":
    "The discussion about what is good, what is beautiful, what is noble, what is pure, what is true ... that is the only conversation worth having."
    This moves me to tears, and fills me with both sadness that Christopher Hitchens is no longer among the living, and a profound joy in his works and his words and his memory. May he never be forgotten.

    After watching the video and reading your comment, Jesse, I just wanted to thank you for uploading this footage. I also wanted to thank all of my fellow skeptics, non-believers, and atheists for sharing in the memory of Christopher Hitchens through coming together here and watching this collection of videos. It truly amazes me just how many views these videos get, and I find it incredibly encouraging that so many of us atheists aren't just opting out of religion and then sitting idly while hoping that others will get out too. I see now that many of us are actively challenging the illogical status quo, but not through evoking baseless fear of metaphysical wrath; instead, we are simply telling them what is, can, and already has been proven in the universe, and for which the pieces of literature known as "holy texts" simply cannot account for. Thank you to all of you for carrying this struggle with me.

    I agree with others, Christopher had a profound effect on many lives, including my own. The loss of him is truly tragic as he was in fact a genius and if I may say, a hero. I've lost many friends due to my alignment with Atheism, which proves Mr. Hitchens was and still is spot on. Thank you for this impressive compilation.

    The poison of religion is so deep inside the veins of humanity that fighting it takes enormous courage, perseverance and dedication. Christopher Hitchens was fighting against the odds but fighting nonetheless. If that is not good, beautiful, noble, pure and true, I don't know what is.
