It was a none hiking week as I mopped up a few Trigs that were right by the road. I do prefer a nice hike, but walking in circles to tag trigs by the road seemed a bit pointless. I was still recovering from my eye infection, which tends to wipe you out. But they needed doing, and they all count. Hopefully, by next week, I'll be back at it.
A roadside walk, (providing it's a quiet one) can be quite interesting because of ancient street furniture that can lurk there on older ways - old boundary stones, ancient way markers and so on.
Our kind of "Trig Point Challenge," Chris! 🤣🤣Love a road trip! Glad to hear your doing better and will be back to your normal self soon. (eyes still look a little tired) Your hikes too! Thanks for bringing us along.
The important thing is not how many km to do but to be in these wonderful places and with this green grass I love seeing the rolling hills of the United Kingdom...today the weather wasn't calm but it's always nice to go for a walk, I'm happy that you feel better.. 😊👏20👍❤
Hi Chris, I just realised we missed this video. Very handy that all six trigs were close to the road! 👍😀 Yep, they all count. Picturesque countryside with lovely green meadows. Nice job ✅ ❤
Such beautiful countryside. I had never heard of a Trig before. I had to look it up on google. Very nice challenge. Thanks for sharing with us. Have a great week Chris.
This is a great idea, grab the road side trigs! Think I might have to grab a few of these! Love that the car is still running on a couple of them! ❤ don’t feel guilty, they all count!
Hello Chris, I loved this type of hiking, ha ha, the weather looked a little cold with the snow still on the ground and the fields a bit muddy. Glad to hear yyou are feeling a little better, enjoyed your video, take care of yourself x Julie and Tony x
Thankfully it seems like most of the trigs aren’t guarded by barbed wire 😂. Great share. It looks like you’re having a similar winter to ours here in Kentucky. Mostly wet, mostly cold. Regardless, we’re both getting out there and putting in some distance 👍
That looked like a muddy field to the start and later in your walk Chris. Your trig points seem to be in such weird places. Amazing how you discover where they are. Hope you get back on form again.🙂
They certainly are in strange places. Like Michael said, they aren’t always on the Peak. Thank you for your continued support Shanita. I really appreciate it.
Ok, you have instantly become my most fascinating YT channel! I'm a land surveyor, so finding old "monuments" as we call them is just so cool! Plus I like building drystack stone walls which I see on this video also! I love how y'all call those monuments "trigs", since that's exactly how they were used by surveyors in the time to triangulate location & later vertical also. Now, they're established with some serious GPS location measuring. But I've found them on the highest mountain tops & from Alaska to Arizona to the Blue Ridge Mountains of my home. My work brings me across streams, mountains, valleys... in wind, rain, snow & hot sultry humidity too. I've lived in Great Britain long ago also & been to that area where you're filming. Just a kid back then, but have always been fascinated with mapping & astronomical sites such as Stonehenge which I remember well. I love nature in the raw, but especially how nature & man can act together. In a real way, not a wishful thinking way! Thanks for this video, it definitely made my day, & I'm happy to have subscribed to you!
Thank you so, so much for a wonderful comment. The trigs in the UK were put in situ between 1930s and 1962. I am on the 88 Trig Point Challenge, so each hike will be to a Triangulation Pillar. 6,500 were erected in the UK with 5,500 remaining. There are 88 within the boundaries of the Peak District National Park where I am hiking. Thanks again and welcome to the channel.
Definitely on the mend Anita, yes I've caught myself on barbed wire quite a few times over the last couple of years. You have a great weekend too Anita and thank you for your continued support.
Nice way to bag a few trigs. Some look as tho they'd seen better days. The weather wasn't the best especially towards the end. I hope you're feeling better now 👍
Hi hope you are feeling better. Some great stretches here was a little concerned at times with the barbed wires but you did well to get out and bag some. Some great views despite the weather. Best wishes Dave and Dawn 👍
That was a good way of bagging more trig points Chris 😊 You'll have still have clocked up quite a few miles by the end of the day though, even just walking from the car and back, they all add up. Hope you're feeling a lot better now 👍
Hi Chris, cracking little video again mate, a trig is a trig, there is no rule saying you have to walk to it! Haha I'm back out in the lakes for a shorter walk tomorrow, staying relatively low in the hope of finding some views but the forecast isn't great. But I have to get out. Waiting for decent weather at the moment is pointless. All the best mate, Dave
Afternoon Chris! Was wondering why I hadn't seen a video of yours for a while. Hope you're recovered from your eye infection now! Didn't take you long to get cold and wet from by the car there! Some of the trips look a bit weather-beaten as well. But the views are decent as always! And the fresh albeit cold air is always good. Cheers Chris!
Just about there Matt. It's been a bit of a haul. It was bitterly cold with that fine rain. Yes, that Trig was a bit battered. Thank you as always for your continued support Matt.
Did well here Chris (a good day of trig bagging mate 🤠👍) Those road side ones are odd aren’t they (tend to think of these trigs summit markers but of cause they aren’t ) Hope your feeling better really soon Chris ATB Simon 🤠👍
I certainly did, too, before I started out in this quest, Simon. Thank you. I hope to be up and at them next week. Thank you as always for your support.
Best way to Bag them at the moment Chris, I've not be able to get out for a hike for a couple of weeks now, everywhere is saturated. Did have a small "welly walk" though but its not the same 🚰.
I just felt I had to do something, Owen. Totally wiped out and run down. I'll be back at it in my usual way next week. Thank you for your continued support, Owen, even when I put a lame one out.
Trying is not lame , far from it . I felt Ike this in December , totally wrecked after taking a month off .. Did table mountain yesterday . .. was a killer . Got kinda lost in clouds , turned around and still alive . . We pick our fights Chris . Its not the winning , it's the getting out. I just wasn't feeling well and thought I'd get them out of the way. Back to normal next week. I'm really enjoying your 75. Thanks for your support Steven.
Ah, I see. A Trig is a spot height, usually the top of a hill or mountain. In the 1930s, they wanted to map the UK accurately, so they installed 6,500 of these Trigs. From any trig, you could see two others. Then, with a theodolite, they were able to map the country out. After the space age started, there was no need for them. Some were pulled up, some built on, and about 5,500 remain. They are a bit of history slowly disappearing.
@thepeakdistrictviking I've just been really wiped out Stu, most of the time in bed, and just needed to put one out. I'm not the first, I've seen three others do it that this way. But yeah, it's not my best one, but the best I could do this week, sadly. Even just doing the three hours round trip wiped me out. Next week, I'll be back at it in my usual style.
Thank you, Gavin. I wasn't really up to it but felt that this was a good a time as any to get these ones out of the way. I went right back to bed afterwards. Thanks again, Gavin.
I had never heard of a Trig before. I assume they're some sort of survey marker? How old would they be and are they confined to a certain region or are they all over the UK? Interesting video! Cheers from Canada. 👍
They are or were all over the UK. Starting from 1936 until 1962, they wanted to map the UK accurately. 6,500 of these Pillars were erected all over the UK. From each pillar, you can, or could see two others. With the advent of satellites, these pillars were no longer required. There are now 5,500 left in various states of disrepair.
