Captain Q and Ran-Day - what absolute champions?! Made my Friday morning coffee so glorious here in Pittwater, Sydney. 20 out of 10 on the good bloke scale!!!
Hi David, the dream of Sailing is the best part of the sport. You should definitely try it but on somebody else's boat first. Its not all fair winds and Gin and tonics!
Wonderful to watch and learn from Captain Q...I was in the USA Navy on a Aircraft Carrier 1973-76 The Connie 64 I was communications repair ...Don't think I would ever have a sailboat unless I had a crew to work her for me and I could just enjoy the travel...well until I could learn what was what..Thanks for the wonderful videos...
I love your channel. Living in Kansas, I'm about as land locked as anyone could be. I've never been sailing. Ever. There weren't even any lakes near where I grew up. But now in my mid 50's I've taken an interest in sailing purely as a intellectual diversion from the daily grind and your videos bring me joy every week. Some day I hope my wife will let me buy a small lake sailing boat. Until then I'm learning what I can.
I was hoping to learn to sail by reading books from the library. The book that spoke to me most was one written by a French sailor and translated to English. The first thing he said was, he couldn't teach someone to sail by reading his book. He said, get on a boat and try to sail and then come back for answers to your questions. I bought a 21' San Juan from 120 miles from home. I took it 60 miles from home to a fishing lake in April for my first time on a sailboat. If I had any questions they were few. I believe I learned to sail in a past life and it all came back to me.
Capt'n Q and Ran-Day you have outdone yourselves again! I've been around boats for 40 years and I'm learning tons in every video. What a beauty and what an incredible value for a 2009 wooden boat! The wide side decks are awesome. Three strand is much better for dock lines too because it gives.
Still landlocked in Moscow looking at some past episodes I somehow missed Cap. This little sweet heart, old school traditional rigged gaff, really brought back some memories! Made me wish I had stayed the course and finished my shipwright apprenticeship! Thanks Fair Winds 🤙🏻
Great Boat, Interior is classic Paul Rollins, like a working boat. I own his 82 build 42’ gaff Schooner Simplicity, impeccable workmanship many similarities. Look forward to future interviews. Thanks
These episodes get better each week. Keep up the good work. Love the drone shot of the salty dog hanging out the window of the Jaguar. Also, that Hinkley last week was a work of art. Dream boat.
Great episode and lovely boat, Capt. Q... Rollins is one of the mainstays of traditional boatbuilding. Also, Bud McIntosh’s book was our textbook at the Landing School in Kennebunk in the 90’s.
Thank you for showing a boat like this and the simplicity that can be had leaving more time for sailing. Also “Riddle of the Sands”. I reread the book and the biography of the author, Erskine Childers every couple of years or so. Oh and also the movie is a good watch.
Another great vid! Thanks you guys! That wooden tiller reminded me so much of the wooden and fiberglass tiller my grandpa made many years ago for our 18’ little sailboat that we used to tack back and forth the St Lawrence River off of the shores of Wolfe Island and Kingston Ontario. Loved this one! But then again, all of your videos are top notch! Cheers!
I spent 25 years on the West Coast, USA, Mexican Border to the Canadian Border, out to 200 nautical miles (fuel limit), in a boat built in 1912. She brought me home safe and sound when other, more modern boats sank, with all hands lost. Inch and a half Douglas Fir planks on two inch frames 12 inches apart. Remember, wood floats!
Well said! If you get a chance to check out the sailing channels Acorn to Arabella or Sampson Boatworks you'll see the massive wood framing is not going anywhere for the next 100 years with proper maintenance.... Sounds like a fantastic 25 years on the water! cheers!
Had to watch riddle of the sand again last night after 40 years, I had a better appreciation of the movie this time. I owned a 1926 Nevins wood sailboat long ago with even less headroom 😄
glad you enjoyed it.... .. as Paul Rollins said, "you go down below and lie down" which makes sense since he is about 6'4" ... a '26 nevins sounds like the both of us would hit our noggins...😄
@@YachtHunters I found the boat used in the movie and the original boat that inspired the novel, one is rotten and the original one scraped. The authors actual life was bizarre and he died from a British firing squad for running guns by boat to Ireland.
Thanks again captain Q & Ran-Day for sharing with us something unique and timeless, interesting insight into New/old school hand built yachts... Cruising with style Still more than capable to do the job
Bravo to you both! Such an enjoyable, pleasant, and informative series. Attire and attitude is pure New England. As a Maine native living in exile in CT, the videos bring me back home. Thank you.
Thank you, Dave! But you have the luxury of a longer sailing season in CT... and we may just have to venture that way to get some early season sailing under our belts
Beautiful boat but I'd be unconscious after cracking my head inside 😂 always excited to see the notification that Captain Q and Randay have been out and about again!
I seem to remember someone saying that the difference between repairing a wooden boat and a fiberglass boat is with the wooden boat you replace parts and with fiberglass, it's all one piece.
It must be love, I enjoy the video just about as much when I'm not tempted to buy the boat at all. Somehow I can imagine myself stooped over in the 5 foot headroom and smelling the top 2 layers of skin from my face frying away on the flue pipe from the stove. It is lovely but, for someone much smaller in every way than me. Great work again fellas! Thank you much.
Thanks fellas, really enjoy your reviews, especially the personal recollections, “the C&c that disappeared to the horizon straight after the start”. Also really interesting tail of provenance in both design and build (eg Vindo begat Hallberg and Rassy....) all great stuff, teddo Flinders downunder
Captain my captain, I hope you are writing a manual for future generations to understand block and tackle on gaff rigs. I think this boat should have been named "The Hobbit" for it's headroom. Lovely boat and presentation . Thanks again.
Lovely ship! If only I was a foot shorter! Wood has its own advantages over other building materials. It really likes salt water. As long as you keep the rainwater out, keep it floating in cooler climates you can maintain her for ever. Replacing planking is possible without ruining the interior, like welding will do on a steel boat. With a steel boat it is harder to find a place to work. Welding and grinding is not allowed in most places in the Netherlands. Most of all the amount character in a wooden boat just can't be beaten. Oh, and if you happen to be young, the skills this boat wit teach you will keep you at work with good pay for life!
Captain Q has warped my mind, I’m a real sailor so I bought some Dinty Moore Stew, damn it man. So I opened the can and warmed it up, taste a bit like dog food but not bad and I’m a man who cooks for his dog..
Another great video and review! I always enjoy the captain’s perspective. Great job Captain and Randy! I’m looking forward to seeing the captain on a Cape Cod catboat!!
that is my presumption so don't take it to the bank but i can see no other reason off hand unless she was originally designed to have an engine when she was built . The engine was added as an after thought
BTW i think you were talking about mousing 6.50 when you meant seizing wire. The former is a "Dummy" wire or string that you use to pull through the required wire the latter is wire being used to secure cotter pins etc
Amazing channel. I watch and re-watch each episode. It quenches my thirst for sailing knowledge. Thank you Captain Q, thank you Randy. What is the story of the dog?
Nice boat. Those off center props take some getting used to. The "walk". Wooden boats are whole different ballgame. I recently put am offer on an old lyman, refused. I thanked God.

Wow that boatbuilder Paul has a fantastic job.
and an enviable workshop!
Would love to to see Captn Q and Ran-day do a series on classic historic NEw England working sail boats. Friendship sloops come to mind..
I’m not a sailor, but with every episode sailing moves up on my bucket list for when I retire.
Don't wait. Do it now. Its the greatest stress relieving activity I've ever known. Until you get caught out in a blow that is.
What are you waiting for? Seriously, make some time for yourself. Life changing.
It's absolutely convinced me! I'm looking for my first sailing dinghy now
