BGC and Manila (Makati) is 1% of the Philippines. Your experience/perspective is based on a small part of the Philippines. IMO your perspective is very naive and one of privilege. It is a third world country, with high infant mortality rates (4x higher than the U.S.), with slums that pale in comparison to what we perceive as "slums" here in the U.S. Sure, it's a developing nation, education is more available, and things are getting better. But the infrastructure outside of the bubble of BGC in the poorer parts of the Philippines is very rough. Older areas of Manila are completely flooded anytime there's a heavy rain. There are brownouts in many areas of the Philippines on a weekly basis. First rate medical care is only available to those with money and live in a big city. I have relatives that live in Mindanao who can't get basic care for dental, or get proper insulin medication, because its so expensive for them. Many of them don't even have flushing toilets. If you think the Philippines is a 1st world county, go ahead and drink water out of the tap. You wouldn't even do that in Makati or BGC unless you have a filter system installed. I can guarantee you are drinking bottled water everyday.

From my perspective as an American who lived in the Philippines for nearly 3 years traveling around the country with my beautiful Filipina girlfriend during that time, I have to say the Philippines very pleasantly surprised me! The people are beautiful, friendly souls, the culture is very unique and grows on you, the water, mountains, and beaches are unbelievable and the malls are out of this world and unlike anything in the US. They are like miniature cities with parks, fountains, flowered terraces and more restaurants, shops, banks, salons and movie theaters than you could imagine. The food is quite good although not even close to being on par with Thailand. The infrastructure is spotty but okay. It’s not perfect but it’s much more enjoyable than people can imagine. I love the Philippines and its people! It’s a developing country, not third world.

Before i came to the US, i thought life here is always sweet and all people are rich. My eyes were opened to the reality 4 years after when I started working for human services where i realized that USA being a well known progressive country, has a lot of impoverished people and families, uneducated, dirty homes (in and out), street beggars and homeless people. I realized that wherever you are, whether 3rd world or 1st world, there is always a problem. No perfect world. I still work in the human services side, and i know how real life here in the US. Philippines just happen to have higher poverty cases. People are nicer in the Philippines than the US, in my honest opinion.

It is a developing country but there is a big discrepancy between the rich and the poor. It needs to address the high unemployment and underemployment rate, poor health care and social services, education, security, infrastructures such as sewage and transportation, discrimination, ageism, and environmental issues such as waste management and water supply among other things. There is also a high crime rate including murder, robbery, rape and sexual assault, and drug addiction. Many corrupt officials use their guns and money to intimidate people! I hope that someday, I can retire in my own country not worrying about these problems.

The place you visited is a posh district in NCR. There are many areas in the metro where you can witness depressed communities. It isn't a claim as you can see them with your eyes. Sadly, in my country, there is a huge gap between the rich and the poor.

Since kids we were thought to be nice, kind, resilient and respectful of other people. Filipinos or otherwise! Sure there are bad fellas but they exist even in G7 countries where I am now. But as Filipinos, we love to enjoy life, we always find time to relax and be happy in our own littlest way. Having said that, I wish you a wonderful stay there, you will be safe in BGC for sure, be happy, stay safe and enjoy life whenever you can! 😅 ✌️🇵🇭 ❤

ok... Just like the video stating Filipinos are more intelligent than Americans. You Filipinos can believe what you want to believe but it's a hell of a lot more comfortable here in the US. Homeless people by choice. I live in a $650,000 home, I have over 2 million in investments, and collect SSN as well. I was raised by a single mother and grew up poor. I educated myself and worked for the future as well as for the present. In the US, this can be done no matter what Filippinos state or people from other countries that don't like the idea of the power of American. TRUMP 2024!!!!!

What defines a third world country?
The modern definition of “Third World” is used to classify countries that are poor or developing. Countries that are part of the “third world” are generally characterized by (1) high rates of poverty, (2) economic and/or political instability, and (3) high mortality rates.

@@toddeifert410 "The term Third World was coined in a very different time. In the wake of World War II, it seemed reasonable to classify nations as capitalist powers (the First World), communist countries (the Second World), and countries that are neither (the Third World).
Current classifications will probably seem equally outdated in 70 years. But for now, there are developed nations, developing nations, and underdeveloped nations."
It is being replaced with terms such as developing countries, least developed countries or the Global South. That's my point. UNCITAD and World Bank have moved away from the term due to multilateralism- in which some developing countries are emerging as economic powers. Southeast Asia has become a middle income region of almost 600 million people.
Great, now put an effort the same way how you got your degree to update yourself in current terminologies.

I'm thinking about this for a long time now. Western countries or we call media tarnish Philippines name for decades. It's dangerous and so on... looking back in our history with Americans, I think it's because of the Filipinos who killed 50 Americans and as revenge, Americans killed 50,000 Filipinos. I think it started that way as well as Philippines drove Americans away in 1990 from their American bases here in Philippines. My opinion just why we are as a nation dislike by media and western world.
