- We bring you our last episode of our time in SE Asia, where we go out for our second day of sailing on a Max Cruise 44.
On our first day we had worked with a combination of the Code 65 and the genoa, just to test out different points of sails. On this morning, we had a specific destination in mind!
Going through the setup of turning on the different systems and starting up both of the electric engines, we left the marina under electric engines only. Once we were in the harbour, the mainsail was raised and the genoa was let out. We had a tight course to keep, if we wanted to make it to our destination of Koh Khram, so sailing a course of 35 degrees off the apparent wind, we'd switch back and forth between sailing and motor-sailing.
Coming up on the breathtaking island, the sun popped out once again, and we enjoyed a refreshing swim before making lunch and getting on our way once again. The Code 65 was packed away, and with the winds at our back, we sailed ourselves back to the marina under spinnaker alone.
Between our 2.5 days of living aboard and two days out sailing, we completely fell in love again with what will be our future boat, and all the features it has which fit exactly what Matt and I are looking for, not only in terms of a performance multihull, but a comfortable liveaboard.
Stay tuned to the end of the episode where we recap our time and a few of our favorite features.
We hope you enjoy!

Marvelous, we are so Happy for you both.
How fun to get out on the water with a boat like yours! I’m sure it gave you a boost to keep on building yours! What a whirlwind trip you had.
It was a crazy 5 days we spent between Vietnam and Thailand, but man, what a boost to our motivation to complete our own build! 😍
That made it worth the trip!
So good to see you reminded of some of the things that make your choice of Max Cruise a wise and happy one. I completely agree about how a fast manageable boat adds dimensions to life. Many moons ago I did coastal hopping crusing on a J24, that lightwind speed was a joy, and more comfortable that lolling around or motoring. And if the wind picked up we flew home in the teens with reduced white sail up. Looking forward to see your build progress!
So good to see you both relaxing!! Beautiful there 😊
Thank you! Yes, we had such a wonderful time in Thailand, I wish there were an easier way to get here once we're finished, without having to cross the South Pacific.
You picked a good way to wrap up the trip. Fun and good information.
Jess, Electric is a motor, internal combustion is an engine.
I enjoyed this episode!
Thank you! We appreciate your videos!
Thank you so much for watching! 🥰
Great to see Jess back in a swim Suit 😊😊
While I am enjoying the build videos, this video makes me realize how much I miss the videos where you are at sea. If I can't wait, I can only imagine how you two are feeling.
The first two years of the build we were enjoying the things that land life affords, but since then we have been more than ready to get back out on the water!
Great to try things out. I also like the more open concept that you’ve got.
Great to see what you boat is going to be capable of. It certainly has the promise of a a sailing catamaran , keep in the light wt push !!!!
Cheers Warren
Matt & Jess in the water and on the water! Yes!
Hey! I see you pulled out some of the Element merchandise Jess. Brings back years of memories. Stay safe. ❤️🙏
Love the light wind sailing ability of the Max Cruise. Not many can sail easily in light winds. Great boat Terry. Great job showing it off MJ. I am really looking forward to seeing the 48 and 55 hit the water. :)
It's going to be awesome. All the best on your continued work🎉
It won’t be too long before your doing this on your Boat.
Lovely Video you two and a nice recharge.
All the best to you both from us in England
One excellent episode.
I imagine that getting out sailing on any boat right now would motivate you to complete the build as fast as possible, but to be on a "sister" boat to yours and be able to draw the comparisons in your mind to what the future can be like has to really amp up that motivation to a peak!!
That's a nice looking boat. I can't believe that you guys have already been working on your boat for 3 years... in doesn't seem like it's been that long even since you worked on the last one. It's really turning out great and I'm impressed with your willingness to work on it yourself.
wow max c is close winded - sails very nice
We're so excited about being able to sail so close to the wind, it's going to open up so many new options for us as we cruise! 😃
You are so so positive, hard to believe
New subscriber. Like#504. Great video 😎🇨🇦 Just a old dude from Pender Harbour BC.
You guys will go that much faster and higher with your daggerboards. Our daggerboard cat (Pescott) could match all the performance monos both in height and speed-- TP52s however were another story...
We should be higher than this mini keel, but wouldn't come close to your Prescott! Very cool boat.
Very glad your light-air sailing verified the performance you hoped for. I get your decision to open the doorway and skip the L-shaped settee but I like the sociability of an L-shaped seating area and the usability of a fixed table so I would almost certainly go for the L-shaped arrangement. You still get a heckuva good view aft from the salon even with a smaller doorway. Seems like a great boat.
I really liked having the L shaped cockpit seating, but I think a convertible option with the movable seating will be the better solution for Jess and I. Worst case, we can permanently bond it in place later if we want. :)
Great Job!!! Thank You… :-)
Nice to hear that you have affirmed your choices and design of your boat. You two look very comfortable and hope you are able to splash soon! What ever happened to the boat shed? Did it get repaired or is it still in tatters?
Great video, love your enthusiasm for the boat and the lifestyle you see in your futures. Hope you went home ready to kick some fibreglass ass 😁 You may not work for Max Cruise, but you are great ambassadors. I enjoy the build process and I am genuinely excited for the day you wet your hulls and drop your lines.
Very nice to see M & J enjoying sailing for a change of pace in a beautiful place. I’m just one data point, but the music kind of detracted a little away from the video. I can’t wait to see you sailing your own Max Cruise in the future.
I guess you'll have diesel as a backup, but when will you even use it? It's so cool that between solar, regen, batteries and sails you'll be able to travel indefinitely without ever turning a motor over.
It's a good backup. I'd love to say that we'd never use the diesel, but I think in reality when it's a liveaboard boat, we'll use it a bit to act as a genset or when we need some more grunt getting into someplace.
Soon Matt & Jess, soon 💪🏻👊🏻
Awesome Boat, looking foward to your Build😊 A new Audio Setup for windy situations would be well spent money😅
Would be nice to know how much speed could add with engine assist consuming only the wattage generated by the solar panels. Love your content.
nice boat to sail to Sa Coma )
You vould have a movable folding table.. or having a floor mounted bracket and a removable leg and top.
If the floor brackets set flush into floor you wont get catching your foot on it.
We'll probably have four different recessed sockets in two areas to allow the table to be used in a few situations.
thx
Not a fan of the way the steering position cover looks but the rest of the boat is really nice. So looking forward to seeing yours splash.
Were you able to garner any information on regeneration from the hybrid system? You did good on your choice of cat for sure. It’s going to be an awesome vessel when it’s done.
It works well in sailing like this, but when in bigger seas, the production tends to vary quite a bit as the boat accelerates. They're working on new software to help keep it producing power in more 'sporty" conditions.
Jess, you were talking about looking forward to down wind and putting up the kite. Disappointed it turned out to be a spinnaker. Otherwise it was still a nice video.
Seems a longer, triangular hatches would make for easier stowage of longer items in the front bays. I'm sure there is a reason.
I think (I'm guessing here) that the size for opening deck hatches are dictated by CE for European boats. They have all kinds of requirements - some make sense, others....
Interesting video. Now I’m starting to get it: reasonable speed, light wind sailing while recharging the batteries, multiple seating positions, etc. Nice! Just out of curiosity did you inspect the finished boat’s fairing areas for smoothness for the sake of comparison?
We did see how they did the spots we were having trouble with. And even that little bit of knowledge made the trip worth it.
Not IF, but WHEN!
Hahaha, good catch
Just the facts Mam, speed over ground to us novices, how it handles and what the ride is like inside the cabin below deck,, Thanks
Can't wait until I see you guys sailing your awesome cat!
I've become so invested in the construction of the boat that I'd forgotten just how ridiculously attractive you both are! Which one do I congratulate for being the lucky one??? 😍😁
What kind of tender/dingy is he running on that boat?
It's the old Max Cruise tender. The new version is much sleeker and more refined.
Another year or 2..😅
Another 16-17 months until she's in the water - but that will be next year!
Will you also be using B&G or something else?
Not sure yet what we'll have on the boat. We learned last time to wait for electronics until the last thing, because you never know what will be available when we launch
@@MJSailing Thanks. Sailing Sweet Ruca uses B&G as we'll as another type that I've never heard about before. This is one of there videos about it. th-cam.com/video/yZJtomdTZLA/w-d-xo.html
IF you finish? Is there some doubt that you will?
!
It really should have been, If We Finished *Faster, lol
I really like that wonderful boat but that canvas 'wheelhouse' is IMHO a disgrace. How about some light (carbon?) design with more fluent lines doing the yacht justice?
I think a nice fixed design would work well for the dodger/bimini. HH used to have something a bit more "flowing" on their 50.
@@MJSailing Do you intend to make an alteration yourself ?
How about you have episodes on separate channel 1 for boat building, the other, such as m j sailing looking for free stuff and advertisements.
It takes a build crew of 40? people 12 months to 18 months and more to build a good working catamaran. You two are 3 years into a 7+ year build project as you stand. You need that shell in the water and working. In hindsight, you would have been better off to build a much larger (70'+-) aluminum cat that you could also charter with.
We'd hate to run charters. And we enjoy the build, so I don't see the need to follow some schedule.
"If we finished" and stop hopping on other cats, and actually get to work. And don't forget the fairing ofc...
Sorry we took 6 days off from boat building after doing it for 58 days straight. Next time I want a day off I'll put in a request to you for approved time off. 😜
@@MJSailing NO!!!! Back to work RIGHT NOW!!@ ;) :*
I'm only interested in the build, not this type of video.
Same here
Feel free to skip these videos and come back once we return to building. 😉👍
