Think about it. The amount of shit confirmed for smash meant people were honestly, feasibly thinking that Master Chief and Doom slayer were realistic chances. Like, actively anticipating their arrival. Imagine being told that 5 years ago. What's important to remember is that when these trailers were first revealed, they didn't have the Smash logo in the beginning so it was actually a surprise mid trailer that it was Smash in the first place.
Smash trailers were and still are known for baiting you into thinking it's not smash, see Rosalina's reveal, where it looks like Kirby is getting into Mario Kart more than anything.
@@Doudoussin Not when they were live, they didn't. Go watch the Nintendo Directs were they debuted or the Game Awards footage. That's why people thought the Rosalina reveal was Kirby in Mario Kart.
Plus it was really unexpected. Nobody expected characters like Lucas and Roy to come back and in a time where there were a lot of leaked characters, Lucas was one who nobody knew it was coming before the trailer.

Counter is already smash's "we don't know what the fuck to give so here's something to fill space" thing, and they just plain-ass refuse to make the existing ones unique. Plus out of everyone who has that kind of move palutena is by goddamn lighyears the one who has the least reason (as a character) to have it, the least they could do is give hers some sort of bonus special effect to add some diversity. EDIT: also more of a nitpick but i hate how reflect isn't a 'projectile' anymore (and it just works like zelda's neutral special).

For me, this trailer and this character coming to Smash is what got me into Fire Emblem, with Fates being the first game I played. Max was right about the cross promotion thing. So for people who were into Fire Emblem at the time, those in Japan who got the game sooner, and current Fire Emblem fans through hindsight, it's an amazing trailer. I know that's not everybody's experience, but it's funny how Max is so quick to sh*t on this trailer, yet rates the Minecraft Steve trailer super high when he's also indifferent to that game. He's like using the "I haven't played this game but I know it's big for some people" logic to give both high and low scores for trailers, which doesn't make any sense. I remember the trailer being poorly timed, yes, because we were sick of getting sword users, especially from Fire Emblem. BUT Fire Emblem is such a great series, nothing that comes from it can be less than a 5, unless it's like a no-effort whatsoever trailer, which we have yet to see.

Hearing Max recite his original reaction to the Cloud trailer from memory gave me goosebumps. I’ve rewatched that original video so many times because it makes me so happy.
The reveal was hype but it was extra special because Mega Man was treated like dirt by Capcom prior to his reveal. 2011-2013 was Mega Man's dark age, and Smash helped revive the series
Little Mac's trailer will always be my favourite smash 4 trailer, just that amazing artstyle for the start, the beautiful music remix of the training theme, then the speed and great showcase of his moveset. Honestly an easy 10/10 one of the trailers I could not stop watching and being a huge punch out fan it was a massive reveal :)
@@kay_sou yeah, I remenber when I first played Fates, some years after Corrin beign in Smash, and I just watched this cutscene in the game and thinked "where the hell did I watched that before?".
I think an important thing to know about Lucas and Roy's trailers were that initially, there was no indication that _any cut characters other than Mewtwo_ would be returning in any capacity as DLC. If they had announced more fighters would be returning as DLC after Mewtwo then it'd be understandable that their returns would be "not very surprising". That said, they didn't make it in until quite a while after Smash 4 launched, and unlike Ultimate new characters weren't given dedicated directs, so these inclusions were pretty much dropped completely out of left field in random Nintendo directs Ryu and Cloud. Not saying that should boost Max's scores for them or anything, but for anyone not familiar with the context of the Smash 4 days, these were a pretty big deal. After several Melee characters were cut from Brawl (Roy included), it was assumed cut characters were *_cut._*
Max being kinda disappointed in the returning characters as DLC in smash 4, instead of all new characters, forgets that Smash 4 wasn't like Ultimate where we were still worried about certain characters being cut or not returning. Yeah they were already in Brawl or Melee, but I think we're spoiled by Ultimate being the first to not remove any characters. While Roy Mewtwo or Lucas werent as hype for me I get why people got excited.
I agree. It's understandable that he wouldn't get the significance, but he really under-appreciates how bummed people were that Lucas was cut, or how many people wanted Mewtwo and Roy back.

While the initial Villager trailer is pretty standard, it _did_ introduce the concept of the "Smash Invitation", which has gone on to become one of the most iconic images in gaming. Credit where credit is due haha.

The Mii Fighter reveal with Reggie and Iwata was a trip back then and it’s still a trip in hindsight. Lowkey one of the wildest trailers in the series.
2 things about Palu: 1) the shots probably meant to emphasize her accessories, but the double meaning is there 2) If people didn’t play Kid Icarus, they should’ve at least recognized her from her brief appearance in Brawl’s Subspace Emissary.

While I guess it's possible, it's pretty highly unlikely anyone who is actively following Smash Bros, watching all the reveal trailers would be unaware of characters like Pac-Man. Even if you've never touched a Pac-Man game, you still KNOW who he is. As weird as it is, it's similar to Steve from Minecraft. You could've never touched that game before but you know for sure who Steve is (even if you just call him "that guy from Minecraft") Not saying it's a bad thing if a character is obscure or more niche but an obscure character won't get the same kind of universal pop-off as others. I mean even if you like Fire Emblem, the fact that Corrin got announced before Fates even came out outside of Japan is still gonna make you scratch your head a bit.
Honestly, Mega Man wins everytime. The build-up, the references to the games, and the blue bomber just moping the floor with everyone with that banging’ Wily Fortress remix never fails to get me hyped. The only other reveals in Smash that has brought me this amount of joy were Pacman, Ridley, the Belmonts, K. rool, and Sora.

It's stupid that he forgot that no one knew for sure if cut charachters would be coming back even with the promise of DLC. So Metwo, Roy, and Lucas WERE suprises for alot of people me included.
I kinda wish we could go back and give Cloud and Bayo CG trailers. They're hype as they are but....they would have been godlike with how good the Smash CG ones are now.
I was pretty happy about the Lucas reveal when it came. At the time, Brawl had set the precedent that characters could just be cut and you wouldn't see them again, so with Lucas missing from the base roster, having him back was a pretty damn big deal, not just as a Mother 3 fan, but as someone who found him way more fun to use than Ness. And of course, characters like Mewtwo and Roy who had been missing since Melee were even bigger for some.
I think it’s still quite scummy to cut him from the roster only to add him later as paid DLC with next to no changes made to his moveset, mewtwo and Roy at least had been missing for two games at that point and also got a complete moveset overhaul. Lucas feels cheap in comparison, although it’s not the first scummy practice from Nintendo and not the last either
I always wanted to see Max’s reaction to Ryu’s trailer back in the day. Too bad he was leaked and couldn’t get it then. Max giving it praise now is nice.

The Mii trailer makes me realize just how special Iwata's presidency was, I mean, that kind of stuff never happened before, and it's probably never gonna happen again.
So when the Theme of Love from Mother 3 started playing in Lucas' reveal, I started bawling my eyes out. The sheer power that music holds emotionally in the entire Mother series is second to none. Theme of Love, You've Come Far Ness, Eight Melodies, Pollyanna; once you've played them you really begin to understand the power they have. And of course the greatest of them all. Smiles and Tears. For those of us who grew up with or even found a new love in the Mother series, Smiles and Tears holds a very, very special place in all our hearts.
Rosalina's reveal didn't have the Smash Bros logo at the beginning. People legit thought it was a trailer for new Mario Kart characters until the announcement splash screen.
26:20 While the Mega Man reveal is still my personal favorite, this trailer- to me- was neither a Lucina nor a Robin reveal... but a Captain Falcon reveal! I remember as time went on and more about this game was shown I was growing increasingly worried that Captain Falcon- one of my personal favorite Smash Bros Characters- wouldn't make the cut, as he hadn't had a relevant game in... a good long while and it was the fourth iteration of the Smash series that I felt would eventually have to start downsizing it's roster somehow. I was so stoked when he showed up here, you have no idea. I remember my comment just as clearly today: "Captain Falcon is so strong it took THREE Fire Emblem characters to take him on even footing... and one of them got punched right out of the roster!" Chrom would eventually show up in Ultimate, but he didn't feature in Smash 4. He had to recover from his injuries first. (Yes, I know he's in Robin's Final Smash)
My favorite part of the Lucina trailer is that even Nintendo leaned into the Captain Falcon's internet fame and gave him a badass part in an animated trailer. While other returning characters were simply introduced with a few screenshots, Captain Falcon was shown mudstomping Chrom and Lucina without breaking a sweat in their own trailer.
I love how Max's original Cloud reaction was so hype, that even he is quoting it word for word in the review. It was such a good reaction too. Max's reactions always feel so much more genuine unlike a lot of other TH-camr's who are just *so* over the top, with them constantly throwing every guess they can come up with just so they can act like they called it or figured it out so fast. Then acting like every character is exactly who they've been waiting for their entire lives.
It’s been a nonstop ride since Smash 4, like 7 years of character after character that we forget we used to have to wait years between entries each console generation to get new characters
Considering the roster was still mostly unknown at the time, unlike Ultimate, the Robin/Lucina trailer was also Captain Falcon's reveal, which was significant because people genuinely didn't know if Falcon was going to make the cut. I ended up playing both Robin and Falcon anyway, but knowing he was in made it so much more hype for me.
Greninja's one of my favorite starters so I'm biased, but I would've rated his reveal a little higher. You got Charizard as a solo character, Greninja as a representative back when Gen 6 was still really new, confirmation that Lucario was coming back, and showed that Mega Charizard X and Mega Lucario were in the game. Before GameFreak, apparently, hated Megas.
That Rosalina trailer gets me every time, because the music they used is one of my favorite pieces. There's just something so friggin wholesome about it.
Man that reenactment of the Cloud trailer reaction is pure gold! Laughed as much as when I saw the reaction the first time. Also it was thanks to the Cloud Reaction that I started following Max and I've been a Dood ever since! SHINE ON!!!
The Palutena trailer is significant because it was animated by SHAFT, who had also previously animated the OVA “Palutena’s Revolting Dinner”, which was paired alongside the original release of Kid Icarus: Uprising.
The Fire Emblem hate really started with Corrin when you think about it. And Byleth took most of the hate from it many years later. However, many like Awakening because it saved the franchise but you can easily tell Smash characters from this game are the real problem. There is 3 of them in Smash, 2 of them being echo fighters!
That was isolated behaviours and the reccurent counter then. Because it really became an actual mouvement when people started to complain about Corrin who was just a way to promote the game and who was totally unknown outside from Japan. I totally remember that people became mad because they got a character they didn't even know and started to see the Fire Emblem favoritism and to massively say Fire Emblem doesn't deserve so much from this moment.
The reasoning within fe community wanting to drop corrin over roy was always a lil weird considering a) hes kinda like the epitome of where the "fe characters are just marth" started from b) he's probably the lesser unique fighter and rep of the franchise considering the moves comparison c) I mean he technically was in the same boat as corrin back in melee except the difference being his game didn't exist in Japan either so he technically debuted in smash
It didn't helped that the character was in a game that hadn't been released on the west yet. You have so many fan favorite characters to put into the game, and you literally put an unknown from a franchise in a game that already bloated with too many characters from that franchise? So they hired an outside writer, Shin Kibayashi was that writer. Nintendo wanted Shin to write the outline for each pathway, what happened instead is that Shin wrote 500 pages for each pathway. Intelligent Systems knew this was too long so they cut the story into pieces without the writers permission and the fact the Nintendo demanded Fates come on the Fire Emblem Anniversary only made things worse. Which resulted in this hilariously mess of a story. The good news this that there is a manga based on Fates that is a little better. Its called Fire Emblem If: the Crown of Niberlung.

You know how every went NUTS over Sora's reveal? I had that same energy when Mega Man made it into Smash. I could not believe it and was on air for days/weeks. I grew up on Mega Man so seeing him in my favorite crossover series was HUGE.
Honestly same for both. I grew up with the DS and GBA so i played a Lot of the Megaman and Kingdom hearts games on those systems, so having both in smash Is exciting.
I didn't go nuts over it. I still believe it should've been Crono. I wanted Crono in since melee even though brawl was the first smash bros game that I properly played
Lowkey, I really miss the old smash feeling. When it was a Nintendo crossover not that ambitious. Moments like 2:12 or 19:47 really hyped me back then, seeing my favorite Nintendo franchises coexist. Nowadays if a character is not a third party it's disliked. And I don't say this as a bad thing. I just love that simple emotion. The standard grew, so the expectations.
The only time it was "not that ambitious" was when the first game released, ever since melee was announced smash has been a BIG deal, it only got more famous over each release but it’s very clear that every game has been a big deal since. Saying otherwise is very much wrong and most likely it is just you who saw it from a different perspective, being a kid at the time of smash 4 probably

@AT Productions Fates was not even released back then in usa when he was revealed and the trailer received a lot of backlash similar to byleth because it was mostly destined to promote the game and he was another anime character for some people, and fates is the most hated Fe in the series. It was never the same thing for Robbin
I wish I had actually felt the intended shock during Ryu's reveal, if it wasn't for those good-for-nothing twats who were quite active leaking and spoiling shit. The reference at the beginning of it was perfect, ideal throwback, but at the moment it was just a lukewarm "ah yeah I knew this was coming already, cool."
It was an oversight by the devs, which definitely wouldn’t happen in Modern Smash, given the secrecy. The devs left code for Roy and Ryu in one of the updates.
Ah, these were simpler times. When trailers were hype no matter the character, people weren’t threatening Sakurai/the Smash team for not adding certain characters, and generally lower overall toxicity.
I loved seeing him referencing his original reaction to Cloud. I still go back and watch that one now and again. His reaction to Cloud specifically is... kind of nostalgic to me, honestly.
Man, it's been such a long time since Cloud's reveal for Smash. Definitely one of the vids that introduced me to Max's channel. His enthusiasm and ability to hype up things are so contagious and wholesome.
It was my first video of his. All the other reactions didnt pick up on the opening from FF7 and were guessing Wolf. Max was the first one to immediately pick up that it was related to FF7. I had a similar reaction to Max when Cloud was announced, where I recognized the FF7 opening and the Smash Bros Logo made me lose my mind. Max's reaction is iconic to me because it mirrors my own.
Corrin wasn't too surprising because, if you can believe it, there actually WAS a precedent for a character from an unreleased Fire Emblem game being added to Smash in order to promote the new game. Roy was added to Melee about 4 months BEFORE Fire Emblem 6 was released in Japan. I believe Sakurai even admitted to not really knowing what to do with him as a character. Even trying to differentiate him from Marth by having him deal more damage by hitting FURTHER from the tip of his sword, despite his actual in-game animations showing him almost always doing the exact opposite.
Nostalgic I can't believe how long ago this was it still feels like it should be today at times. Summer 2014 was like nothing else with all the hype and the esrb leak and stuff. I was so big into Fire Emblem Awakening, seeing Robin's trailer with Lucina and the weapon switching and durability then was just fucking incredible. I'm also glad Chrom got his chance lol.
Megaman's trailer even still to this day is one of if not the best trailer for a new Smash character ever. Not even that huge of a Megaman fan having really only played X and X2, but the buildup to Megaman's reveal to all the love they show him in the trailer, its just perfect
Catch me always coming in for the Fire Emblem trailer reactions, I would like to bring up that the reason why Robin wasn't feeling quite as familiar as Lucina is because Robin was a customizable avatar acting as the second protagonist (with Chrom) of FE Awakening. Most people just designed their own and renamed them, so "Robin", as a character, wasn't quite as prominently shown, and even for pre-release Awakening stuff, Robin was mostly shown to be hooded, or to have multiple designs. Awakening released in 2013 (2012 in Japan), so neither Lucina nor Robin were really long running characters. I think at the time of their reveal, they may've been the most recent existing characters to get added into Smash, but I'm not 100% sure on that. At the time, Awakening did end up becoming one of the more popular games on the 3DS though, selling a million copies within a year or two of release (ftr, both Awakening and Fates are currently sitting in the top 30 highest selling 3DS games of all time). Far be it from me to hate an FE character addition, but I do think Corrin was a little odd. Being released before the english version of Fates dropped, coupled with the fact even people who knew about Corrin weren't the biggest fans of them as a character, thanks to Fates having poorly written them, it just leaves a strange feeling, even for me at the time. I had imported Fates and read through most of the game's fan-translation before the english release, so I was well aware of their quality as a character (or lack thereof), so I was far better equipped than most people, FE fans included, going into this reveal. I was hyped about it for sure, but less about the fact that it was Corrin, and moreso the fact that this series I had been in love with for over a decade (now nearly two decades), that had been largely ignored by practically everyone, was finally getting some extreme recognition. I don't care what anyone says, it warms my heart to know how much Sakurai loved Fire Emblem. I do think Azura should've been the Fates rep over Corrin though, had there HAD to've been one, but I do have to admit that Corrin's tools in the game are fun, at least. I just wish they were written better in their original game haha. They're very flaky, childish, they lack awareness, most of the other main characters do all the heavy lifting (both in writing and in combat), it's hard to really get a good gauge on them. The localization for Fates is also notoriously poor, pulling tension out of scenes and improperly presenting certain characters. Fates is a decent game overall, and I do recommend it to anyone interested in the series, just not as a first game... Finally, in much the same way that Roy was added to Melee to promote the then unreleased Fire Emblem: Binding Blade in Japan, I definitely agree that Corrin mimicked that choice without a doubt, even if Fates had released in Japan at the time. Fates did get many trailers in english before Corrin's reveal for Smash, so they were "recognizable", but as previously mentioned, yeah not many people actually knew them.

I agree that Megaman & Cloud had two of the best overall trailers (though Palutena’s reveal had arguably the best non-CG animation), but I disagree entirely with Max’s rating of the Robin reveal. What with Fire Emblem basically being Nintendo’s post-Mario Final Fantasy, Robin showing up was one of Nintendo’s biggest flexes because they managed to prove that they had the ability to revive one of their own intellectual properties and stick it in Smash Bros. Gameplay-wise, non-Fire Emblem fans also need to remember that Robin’s contribution to Smash includes being the first character to introduce limited resources as part of a character’s gameplay mechanic. Whereas Lucina as an echo fighter served to show Sakurai’s team had both the ability (and more importantly the BUDGET) to pull a fast one on us by using Lucina’s reveal as a red-herring, Robin is all about micromanaging resources mid-battle. But of course, all that matters are the memes and third-party characters, right? Woo. TL;DR: Non-Nintendo characters are cool, but a lot of them were only made possible because Nintendo knows how to flex. Robin + Lucina = BIG flex.
I will say, the one place where Max's biases become most known is in reaction to the 3DS fighters. Awakening pretty much blew up the Fire Emblem series so was definitely not a "who?" pick and was well received. Likewise Palutena got big fanfare because Kid Icarus Uprising was iconic for the whole system. Definitely not an unknown character.
It’s kind of like that with every Nintendo character. People forget amid all the hype for 3rd party reveals that this is still the Nintendo fighting game at the end of the day. You have to expect Nintendo characters to show up; it’s not a wasted slot or forcing YOUR most wanted 3rd party pick out. No, Robin and Little Mac won’t have as much of an impact as the biggest Capcom or Square character getting announced... but it’s about Nintendo’s legacy first, and gaming as a whole’s legacy second. It’s like asking why there weren’t more Mortal Kombat characters in Injustice. Yeah it’s a great bonus, but at the end of the day, you’re gonna have more DC characters in your DC fighting game.
The biggest giveaway is the Shulk Trailer IMO. He knew who Shulk was because he's friends with Simmons, but Robin and Palu were easily bigger "Reveals" to the general fanbases than Shulk was at the time. So his biases show extremely hard in that stretch.

I knew nothing about Shulk before that trailer, but seeing Shulk seeing visions like in That's So Raven holding his own with Link and Marth and seeing him change his stats made me intrigued.

I just want to point out that for the Mega Man reveal, they chose to play the two most iconic songs in the series, Mega Man 2's title theme, and the Dr. Wily Stage 1 theme, also from Mega Man 2.

Lucina and Robin's trailer was actually also the reveal of Captain Falcon. Even though he was an OG veteran of the series, a few months prior, every *_other_* Veteran had been revealed over Sakurai's Twitter all in the same week, but Captain Falcon was notably absent from that.. Meanwhile in an interview at around the time of the Palutena trailer, Sakurai is quoted as having said that Smash4 was going to reevaluate character inclusions. And with F-Zero being a pretty dead franchise there was serious talk that he'd been removed. It was serious hype seeing those eyes light up and that smile.
The Cloud reveal was pretty much the confirmation I needed that anybody, Nintendo based/affiliated or not, could be on this game. Was an absolutely mind breaking trailer

What's important to remember is that when these trailers were first revealed, they didn't have the Smash logo in the beginning so it was actually a surprise mid trailer that it was Smash in the first place.
Smash trailers were and still are known for baiting you into thinking it's not smash, see Rosalina's reveal, where it looks like Kirby is getting into Mario Kart more than anything.

For me, this trailer and this character coming to Smash is what got me into Fire Emblem, with Fates being the first game I played. Max was right about the cross promotion thing. So for people who were into Fire Emblem at the time, those in Japan who got the game sooner, and current Fire Emblem fans through hindsight, it's an amazing trailer. I know that's not everybody's experience, but it's funny how Max is so quick to sh*t on this trailer, yet rates the Minecraft Steve trailer super high when he's also indifferent to that game. He's like using the "I haven't played this game but I know it's big for some people" logic to give both high and low scores for trailers, which doesn't make any sense. I remember the trailer being poorly timed, yes, because we were sick of getting sword users, especially from Fire Emblem. BUT Fire Emblem is such a great series, nothing that comes from it can be less than a 5, unless it's like a no-effort whatsoever trailer, which we have yet to see.

Little Mac's trailer will always be my favourite smash 4 trailer, just that amazing artstyle for the start, the beautiful music remix of the training theme, then the speed and great showcase of his moveset. Honestly an easy 10/10 one of the trailers

To be fair, no DLC got a CG trailer aside from Corrin, but that was just literally a reused cutscene from Fates.

In hindsight I don’t think it was a budget thing, I just think Square Enix wouldn’t allow it because they were working on the remake at the time.
I think an important thing to know about Lucas and Roy's trailers were that initially, there was no indication that _any cut characters other than Mewtwo_ would be returning in any capacity as DLC. If they had announced more fighters would be returning as DLC after Mewtwo then it'd be understandable that their returns would be "not very surprising". That said, they didn't make it in until quite a while after Smash 4 launched, and unlike Ultimate new characters weren't given dedicated directs, so these inclusions were pretty much dropped completely out of left field in random Nintendo directs Ryu and Cloud.
Not saying that should boost Max's scores for them or anything, but for anyone not familiar with the context of the Smash 4 days, these were a pretty big deal. After several Melee characters were cut from Brawl (Roy included), it was assumed cut characters were *_cut._*

Max being kinda disappointed in the returning characters as DLC in smash 4, instead of all new characters, forgets that Smash 4 wasn't like Ultimate where we were still worried about certain characters being cut or not returning. Yeah they were already in Brawl or Melee, but I think we're spoiled by Ultimate being the first to not remove any characters. While Roy Mewtwo or Lucas werent as hype for me I get why people got excited.

While the initial Villager trailer is pretty standard, it _did_ introduce the concept of the "Smash Invitation", which has gone on to become one of the most iconic images in gaming. Credit where credit is due haha.

While I guess it's possible, it's pretty highly unlikely anyone who is actively following Smash Bros, watching all the reveal trailers would be unaware of characters like Pac-Man. Even if you've never touched a Pac-Man game, you still KNOW who he is. As weird as it is, it's similar to Steve from Minecraft. You could've never touched that game before but you know for sure who Steve is (even if you just call him "that guy from Minecraft")
Not saying it's a bad thing if a character is obscure or more niche but an obscure character won't get the same kind of universal pop-off as others. I mean even if you like Fire Emblem, the fact that Corrin got announced before Fates even came out outside of Japan is still gonna make you scratch your head a bit.
Honestly, Mega Man wins everytime. The build-up, the references to the games, and the blue bomber just moping the floor with everyone with that banging’ Wily Fortress remix never fails to get me hyped. The only other reveals in Smash that has brought me this amount of joy were Pacman, Ridley, the Belmonts, K. rool, and Sora.
I vividly remember people losing their shit with the Megaman trailer. Even i got goosebumps from it and i haven't even played the game.

I was pretty happy about the Lucas reveal when it came. At the time, Brawl had set the precedent that characters could just be cut and you wouldn't see them again, so with Lucas missing from the base roster, having him back was a pretty damn big deal, not just as a Mother 3 fan, but as someone who found him way more fun to use than Ness. And of course, characters like Mewtwo and Roy who had been missing since Melee were even bigger for some.
I think it’s still quite scummy to cut him from the roster only to add him later as paid DLC with next to no changes made to his moveset, mewtwo and Roy at least had been missing for two games at that point and also got a complete moveset overhaul.
Lucas feels cheap in comparison, although it’s not the first scummy practice from Nintendo and not the last either

The Mii trailer makes me realize just how special Iwata's presidency was, I mean, that kind of stuff never happened before, and it's probably never gonna happen again.
So when the Theme of Love from Mother 3 started playing in Lucas' reveal, I started bawling my eyes out. The sheer power that music holds emotionally in the entire Mother series is second to none. Theme of Love, You've Come Far Ness, Eight Melodies, Pollyanna; once you've played them you really begin to understand the power they have.
And of course the greatest of them all. Smiles and Tears. For those of us who grew up with or even found a new love in the Mother series, Smiles and Tears holds a very, very special place in all our hearts.
Yeah if Max had more familiarity with Mother 3 I think his tune would have shifted lol

I remember as time went on and more about this game was shown I was growing increasingly worried that Captain Falcon- one of my personal favorite Smash Bros Characters- wouldn't make the cut, as he hadn't had a relevant game in... a good long while and it was the fourth iteration of the Smash series that I felt would eventually have to start downsizing it's roster somehow. I was so stoked when he showed up here, you have no idea.
I remember my comment just as clearly today: "Captain Falcon is so strong it took THREE Fire Emblem characters to take him on even footing... and one of them got punched right out of the roster!"
Chrom would eventually show up in Ultimate, but he didn't feature in Smash 4. He had to recover from his injuries first.

My favorite part of the Lucina trailer is that even Nintendo leaned into the Captain Falcon's internet fame and gave him a badass part in an animated trailer. While other returning characters were simply introduced with a few screenshots, Captain Falcon was shown mudstomping Chrom and Lucina without breaking a sweat in their own trailer.
Mewtwo's announcement seems so quiet without Etika's scream in the distance.

I love how Max's original Cloud reaction was so hype, that even he is quoting it word for word in the review. It was such a good reaction too. Max's reactions always feel so much more genuine unlike a lot of other TH-camr's who are just *so* over the top, with them constantly throwing every guess they can come up with just so they can act like they called it or figured it out so fast. Then acting like every character is exactly who they've been waiting for their entire lives.

Me being a Paultena-stan since Kid Icarus Uprising, I laughed my ass off as Max noticing the trailer properly.
Considering the roster was still mostly unknown at the time, unlike Ultimate, the Robin/Lucina trailer was also Captain Falcon's reveal, which was significant because people genuinely didn't know if Falcon was going to make the cut. I ended up playing both Robin and Falcon anyway, but knowing he was in made it so much more hype for me.
I love his little callback to his initial reaction to Cloud's reveal... In a way, he vocalized ALL of our disbelief that day.
Greninja's one of my favorite starters so I'm biased, but I would've rated his reveal a little higher. You got Charizard as a solo character, Greninja as a representative back when Gen 6 was still really new, confirmation that Lucario was coming back, and showed that Mega Charizard X and Mega Lucario were in the game. Before GameFreak, apparently, hated Megas.
They never "hated megas". Megas were just meant to be in one gen. That they were even in two was bizarre.
Actually Robin and Lucina's trailer was well received. Awakening was a phenomenum that revived the franchise.

The Palutena trailer is significant because it was animated by SHAFT, who had also previously animated the OVA “Palutena’s Revolting Dinner”, which was paired alongside the original release of Kid Icarus: Uprising.
Kid icarus is still one of Sakurai's babies so it makes sense that the Palutena trailer got so much love lol
The Fire Emblem hate really started with Corrin when you think about it. And Byleth took most of the hate from it many years later. However, many like Awakening because it saved the franchise but you can easily tell Smash characters from this game are the real problem. There is 3 of them in Smash, 2 of them being echo fighters!

Because it really became an actual mouvement when people started to complain about Corrin who was just a way to promote the game and who was totally unknown outside from Japan. I totally remember that people became mad because they got a character they didn't even know and started to see the Fire Emblem favoritism and to massively say Fire Emblem doesn't deserve so much from this moment.
The reasoning within fe community wanting to drop corrin over roy was always a lil weird considering
a) hes kinda like the epitome of where the "fe characters are just marth" started from
b) he's probably the lesser unique fighter and rep of the franchise considering the moves comparison

@@kyurei4478 the Reason for Fate's sloppy story, is because the writers where trying to achieve too much with not enough time. Intelligent Systems had an idea for Fates to have three stories to appeal to everyone, but they realized that they didn't have enough writers. You know how every went NUTS over Sora's reveal? I had that same energy when Mega Man made it into Smash. I could not believe it and was on air for days/weeks. I grew up on Mega Man so seeing him in my favorite crossover series was HUGE.

I grew up with the DS and GBA so i played a Lot of the Megaman and Kingdom hearts games on those systems, so having both in smash Is exciting.
I didn't go nuts over it. I still believe it should've been Crono. I wanted Crono in since melee even though brawl was the first smash bros game that I properly played
Lowkey, I really miss the old smash feeling. When it was a Nintendo crossover not that ambitious.
Moments like 2:12 or 19:47 really hyped me back then, seeing my favorite Nintendo franchises coexist.
Nowadays if a character is not a third party it's disliked. And I don't say this as a bad thing. I just love that simple emotion.

The only time it was "not that ambitious" was when the first game released, ever since melee was announced smash has been a BIG deal, it only got more famous over each release but it’s very clear that every game has been a big deal since. Saying otherwise is very much wrong and most likely it is just you who saw it from a different perspective, being a kid at the time of smash 4 probably

Robin was actually a pretty big moment for FE fans.
Awakening was the game that (for better or worse) brought the series back into the mainstream, and Robin is arguably the most important of the 3 main characters in it.
Also, Robin using magic was FINALLY a shift away from literally every FE character in Smash only using 1 of the many weapon types in the series.
Robin was actually pretty big since Fire Emblem Awakening sold like crazy back then. He wasn't as popular as Chrom or Lucina, but still a big deal.

@AT Productions Fates was not even released back then in usa when he was revealed and the trailer received a lot of backlash similar to byleth because it was mostly destined to promote the game and he was another anime character for some people, and fates is the most hated Fe in the series. It was never the same thing for Robbin

I wish I had actually felt the intended shock during Ryu's reveal, if it wasn't for those good-for-nothing twats who were quite active leaking and spoiling shit. The reference at the beginning of it was perfect, ideal throwback, but at the moment it was just a lukewarm "ah yeah I knew this was coming already, cool."

It was an oversight by the devs, which definitely wouldn’t happen in Modern Smash, given the secrecy. The devs left code for Roy and Ryu in one of the updates.

When trailers were hype no matter the character, people weren’t threatening Sakurai/the Smash team for not adding certain characters, and generally lower overall toxicity.
I loved seeing him referencing his original reaction to Cloud. I still go back and watch that one now and again. His reaction to Cloud specifically is... kind of nostalgic to me, honestly.

Man, it's been such a long time since Cloud's reveal for Smash. Definitely one of the vids that introduced me to Max's channel. His enthusiasm and ability to hype up things are so contagious and wholesome.
It was my first video of his. All the other reactions didnt pick up on the opening from FF7 and were guessing Wolf. Max was the first one to immediately pick up that it was related to FF7. I had a similar reaction to Max when Cloud was announced, where I recognized the FF7 opening and the Smash Bros Logo made me lose my mind. Max's reaction is iconic to me because it mirrors my own.
Corrin wasn't too surprising because, if you can believe it, there actually WAS a precedent for a character from an unreleased Fire Emblem game being added to Smash in order to promote the new game.
Roy was added to Melee about 4 months BEFORE Fire Emblem 6 was released in Japan. I believe Sakurai even admitted to not really knowing what to do with him as a character. Even trying to differentiate him from Marth by having him deal more damage by hitting FURTHER from the tip of his sword, despite his actual in-game animations showing him almost always doing the exact opposite.
Nostalgic I can't believe how long ago this was it still feels like it should be today at times. Summer 2014 was like nothing else with all the hype and the esrb leak and stuff. I was so big into Fire Emblem Awakening, seeing Robin's trailer with Lucina and the weapon switching and durability then was just fucking incredible. I'm also glad Chrom got his chance lol.
Lucina was one of my favorite characters in FE:A, I was so incredibly happy that she got in, even if she was pretty much just Marth.

Megaman's trailer even still to this day is one of if not the best trailer for a new Smash character ever. Not even that huge of a Megaman fan having really only played X and X2, but the buildup to Megaman's reveal to all the love they show him in the trailer, its just perfect

Catch me always coming in for the Fire Emblem trailer reactions, I would like to bring up that the reason why Robin wasn't feeling quite as familiar as Lucina is because Robin was a customizable avatar acting as the second protagonist (with Chrom) of FE Awakening. Most people just designed their own and renamed them, so "Robin", as a character, wasn't quite as prominently shown, and even for pre-release Awakening stuff, Robin was mostly shown to be hooded, or to have multiple designs.
Awakening released in 2013 (2012 in Japan), so neither Lucina nor Robin were really long running characters. I think at the time of their reveal, they may've been the most recent existing characters to get added into Smash, but I'm not 100% sure on that. At the time, Awakening did end up becoming one of the more popular games on the 3DS though, selling a million copies within a year or two of release (ftr, both Awakening and Fates are currently sitting in the top 30 highest selling 3DS games of all time).
Far be it from me to hate an FE character addition, but I do think Corrin was a little odd. Being released before the english version of Fates dropped, coupled with the fact even people who knew about Corrin weren't the biggest fans of them as a character, thanks to Fates having poorly written them, it just leaves a strange feeling, even for me at the time. I had imported Fates and read through most of the game's fan-translation before the english release, so I was well aware of their quality as a character (or lack thereof), so I was far better equipped than most people, FE fans included, going into this reveal. I was hyped about it for sure, but less about the fact that it was Corrin, and moreso the fact that this series I had been in love with for over a decade (now nearly two decades), that had been largely ignored by practically everyone, was finally getting some extreme recognition. I don't care what anyone says, it warms my heart to know how much Sakurai loved Fire Emblem.
I do think Azura should've been the Fates rep over Corrin though, had there HAD to've been one, but I do have to admit that Corrin's tools in the game are fun, at least. I just wish they were written better in their original game haha. They're very flaky, childish, they lack awareness, most of the other main characters do all the heavy lifting (both in writing and in combat), it's hard to really get a good gauge on them. The localization for Fates is also notoriously poor, pulling tension out of scenes and improperly presenting certain characters. Fates is a decent game overall, and I do recommend it to anyone interested in the series, just not as a first game...
Finally, in much the same way that Roy was added to Melee to promote the then unreleased Fire Emblem: Binding Blade in Japan, I definitely agree that Corrin mimicked that choice without a doubt, even if Fates had released in Japan at the time. Fates did get many trailers in english before Corrin's reveal for Smash, so they were "recognizable", but as previously mentioned, yeah not many people actually knew them.

I agree that Megaman & Cloud had two of the best overall trailers (though Palutena’s reveal had arguably the best non-CG animation), but I disagree entirely with Max’s rating of the Robin reveal. What with Fire Emblem basically being Nintendo’s post-Mario Final Fantasy, Robin showing up was one of Nintendo’s biggest flexes because they managed to prove that they had the ability to revive one of their own intellectual properties and stick it in Smash Bros.
Gameplay-wise, non-Fire Emblem fans also need to remember that Robin’s contribution to Smash includes being the first character to introduce limited resources as part of a character’s gameplay mechanic. Whereas Lucina as an echo fighter served to show Sakurai’s team had both the ability (and more importantly the BUDGET) to pull a fast one on us by using Lucina’s reveal as a red-herring, Robin is all about micromanaging resources mid-battle.
But of course, all that matters are the memes and third-party characters, right? Woo.
TL;DR: Non-Nintendo characters are cool, but a lot of them were only made possible because Nintendo knows how to flex. Robin + Lucina = BIG flex.
I will say, the one place where Max's biases become most known is in reaction to the 3DS fighters. Awakening pretty much blew up the Fire Emblem series so was definitely not a "who?" pick and was well received. Likewise Palutena got big fanfare because Kid Icarus Uprising was iconic for the whole system. Definitely not an unknown character.
It’s kind of like that with every Nintendo character. People forget amid all the hype for 3rd party reveals that this is still the Nintendo fighting game at the end of the day. You have to expect Nintendo characters to show up; it’s not a wasted slot or forcing YOUR most wanted 3rd party pick out. No, Robin and Little Mac won’t have as much of an impact as the biggest Capcom or Square character getting announced... but it’s about Nintendo’s legacy first, and gaming as a whole’s legacy second.
It’s like asking why there weren’t more Mortal Kombat characters in Injustice. Yeah it’s a great bonus, but at the end of the day, you’re gonna have more DC characters in your DC fighting game.
The biggest giveaway is the Shulk Trailer IMO. He knew who Shulk was because he's friends with Simmons, but Robin and Palu were easily bigger "Reveals" to the general fanbases than Shulk was at the time. So his biases show extremely hard in that stretch.

Lucina and Robin's trailer was actually also the reveal of Captain Falcon.
Even though he was an OG veteran of the series, a few months prior, every *_other_* Veteran had been revealed over Sakurai's Twitter all in the same week, but Captain Falcon was notably absent from that.. Meanwhile in an interview at around the time of the Palutena trailer, Sakurai is quoted as having said that Smash4 was going to reevaluate character inclusions. And with F-Zero being a pretty dead franchise there was serious talk that he'd been removed.
It was serious hype seeing those eyes light up and that smile.
