    **UPDATE**
    I wanted to take a moment to respond to a minority of comments on this video. While the video currently enjoys a 96+% like to dislike ratio, I have noticed a handful of comments criticizing this video for not featuring dogs that are not dog friendly. For example one viewer writes:
    "No real info here... you are showing ideal scenarios while you should be addressing real scenarios, aggressiveness is the issue when dogs meet... "
    Among beginners and intermediate trainers there is often this idea that we need to wait for problems to emerge before addressing them. Particularly in the area of puppy socialization, the best medicine is prevention. If you hope to excel in understanding and modifying dog behavior there is one point you need to understand. Preparation and prevention are essential to showing a dog how to behave in our culture. If more people knew to take the advice I offered in this video, then we would have fewer issues in this department. So to this viewer and others who’ve echoed this sentiment, I would say that ABSOLUTELY I am showing ideal scenarios! Showing your dog from day one how to behave around dogs will prevent future issues from arising much of the time.
    As you know, I routinely address reactivity, nervous dogs and fearful dogs in my videos all the time. A lot of us adopt an older dog or under socialize our dogs while they are young and are left with the dilemma of what to do when our dogs are older and are not very accepting of people and dogs. I’m sure I’ll address this more in the future on a case by case basis. But that’s just it, once your dog has crossed into a pattern of behavior that is potentially dangerous to you, other people, or other animals, then we need to address that on an individual basis (as you’ve seen me do in several videos) and there is no broad brush stroke that will fix that.
    The best dog trainers do everything they can to show their dogs how to behave rather than how NOT to behave. That’s not to say we can’t “fix” dogs who have social issues, it’s that this is a completely different topic. The person who just got a dog MUST know the info. in this video.
    I certainly do not want to discourage those critical of my lessons. This is one way that everyone can learn and grow. And the biggest lessons I've learned in my career have come directly from you. I just felt that these critiques were coming from a place that lacks experience and understanding of dog behavior which is why I wanted to clarify my point a bit more.
    The aim of this video was to give people a general idea as to how to make sure that their dog remains comfortable with new dogs moving forward, and socialization can be a complex issue. Obviously I cannot address every aspect of canine social behavior in a single lesson. This video is for the average person with an average dog. But I do pride myself on showcasing a variety of scenarios and I’ll continue to do that in the future.
    Thank you!
    -Zak George

    I carried my puppy everywhere from 8 weeks. Took the bus, went to the busy markets. To town and he is a great dog. He is a 5 year old pomeranian. Recently a group of 10 dogs ran up to him with a dog Walker and he just happily let them sniff him. He's a great dog. Socialisation is more important than training imo.

    Zak's videos have been REALLY helpful with our new puppy! He's 3 months old, we've had him for 3 days now and he can already sit, stay, and comes when we call him. Supervision and daily routine are key! He's able to sleep in his crate at night now and sometimes goes into it for nap time during the day by himself. Helps to leave a plush toy in there for him so he's not alone. He's definitely more fearful with men but warms up when given time. Thanks Zak, for all the helpful videos! Looking forward to socializing him in the coming days and weeks with new dogs and people.

    I would like to see this on a more anxious dog, like mine. she's leash aggressive but she plays fine with dogs at daycare. If we meet a dog while on a walk, sometimes she's good. Sometimes if it's the same dog but a few days go by. she gets aggressive.

      Amber Pellegrini Noted. I will say that depending on what level her outbursts are, that playing with her for 20 min or so prior to encountering dogs will help. However this is only for moderate outbursts not for a dog likely to attack another dog. Snapping is different than attacking, but either way exercise prior to encountering dogs almost always helps with this type of behavior.

    • @ambermarie1636
      @ambermarie1636 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is hard to get her to exercise lol I try to throw her toys for her to catch but she gets a crazy snarl growl thing going on when I try to retrieve the toy. She's got a lot of issues. I've taught her many tricks but the obedience has been the hardest.

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Amber Pellegrini Hmmm well, if she is energetic she must get her energy out before obedience training. If she is so protective of her toys that you cannot adequately teach her something like fetch, my recommendation is to find a positive trainer in your area with good references who does NOT use choke, prong or e-collars. These cases must be dealt with on a case by case basis. It sounds like you love her a lot and it sounds like you guys have a really tight bond. Just be patient and remember these issues take time.

    My dog Buddy has always had issues with other dogs, I rescued him when he was a year old and he came from a pretty bad situation (he had been abused and then abandoned) It appears that he had little to no socialization. Most of his dog-to-dog issues stem from a fear of not knowing what they are saying (Buddy knows almost nothing about dog body language). He has been improving as of late, he was able to walk past a dog that was snarling, snapping and barking at him without panicking or becoming defensive. He also enjoys playing with some of the dogs in his agility class that are okay with his oaf-ish behavior and are helping to teach him some polite doggie manners.
    While he still has issues, he has improved a ton!
    Buddy wants me to say that he absolutely loves Petflow! He gets his Orijen dog food from it, and he has never liked a food more! :D

Shes energetic and i would be so lost without these videos, since she used to have separation anxiety, it actually helped her to meet new dogs and other people, or so ive noticed, she loves going on walks and playing with me, and doesnt mind staying in her crate/dog house anymore since i got her comfortable with treats and such! Now all he hasn't done yet is communicating with other pups since he sometimes barks at them and sometimes walks away. I will follow this one :) Thank you for this Zak.

She has a blast playing with all sizes of dogs with no issues. She's very exuberant but knows when she's trying to play with a very small or shy or fearful dog she will calm right down and becomes very gentle. I love your videos. Ours is about a year and a half, we got her as a rescue when she would about a year. I've learned her signals over the last 1-2 months for when she's excited to meet a dog versus scared. Should she avoid those dogs that make her scared, or still try to interact with them?

      I'm not a professional but Zak had the owner play fetch with his dog Nina before introducing the new dog. If you play with your dog beforehand, it will exhaust your dog's extra energy so he isn't as hyper when meeting the new dog. If your dog is still super excited when meeting a new dog, put some distance between the dogs. This lets him know that you do not want the jumpiness. Wait until he calms down then reintroduce him to the new dog.

    Zak, I've been having puppy dates with my 13 week old border collie "Augie" and a friends 10 week lab puppy "Hogarth" and their play has been getting increasingly rough (Lots of play biting and wrestling). How do we calm that behavior down? This last play session Augie was biting Hogarth's face and legs playfully but a few times Hogarth yelped and Augie didn't stop so we pulled them apart. It just seemed really really rough. How do we create a more calm environment for them to play. I love that they play together (it tires them out!) but I don't want to see anybody get hurt.

    Where was this video three years ago? I totally messed it all up when I moved to a new house and had my one time super dog friendly dogs meet the neighbor's dog. The girl did fine, but the boy and the other dog did NOT get along, and now I have to work out the fear reaction he has when seeing other dogs. He turned from a great, happy dog that liked other dogs to a dog that reacts aggressively around other dogs...all because of that one bad meeting. Maybe you can do a video for those of us who didn't do introductions correctly, and have had bad results because of it - how to "undo" the huge mistake.

      I hate that when neighbors don't keep their dogs in s leash it's so irritating! My backyard gate is broken and I have a big back lawn, I keep my puppy in a leash and my neighbors dog would always sneak inside barking at my dog? Lol crazy little guy but so cute. I just dont understand what keeps them from buying a stake and tired out it's not that expensive and it's very useful

      I appreciate you taking the time to communicate this to me. I have to say though, that videos of this quality would not exist without our wonderful sponsors! This video, between casting, writing, filming and editing took about 4 days of my time. Not to mention the extra staff I had to hire to make it happen. Am I to understand that you expect this from me in my free time as long as I don't make a good living doing it? Even though I have gone through tremendous efforts to keep all of my video content free to anyone with an internet connection? Right now our budget is good and it's growing. If you will endure and support my content, you are going to be very happy with the future of my videos:) Perhaps if enough people get their supplies from a company like Petflow.com/ZakGeorge, then they'll be in the UK too! Again thank you, but what people who complain about advertising don't seem to understand is that this is how premium level content like this is free for the masses. There are other dog trainers on TH-cam who have decent content too. Most none of them have sponsors, and most of them post a few times a year. That's no way to run a business and that would qualify as a hobby, which is totally fine too. However, this is not my hobby, but my full time profession.

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Theo, I know I may have been a bit harsh here. It's just that I am so committed to making content like this free for everyone (I don't sell DVD's or anything), that it has taken years to devise a strategy to make a good income from this. Furthermore, I go through considerable effort to find sponsors that are consistent with my message. I turn down more sponsorships than I accept. So I want you to know that, while it may inconvenience you a bit, the big picture is that 20,000 people a day watch my videos and learn how to teach their dogs humanely and positively.

    • @theokm
      @theokm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Zak George's Dog Training rEvolution Not harsh at all Zak and I get your point. I do subscribe to Patreon and don't expect something for free - and would probably be prepared to pay even more. Being in the UK is mainly what makes the ads annoying - but certainly not annoying enough for me to stop watching your super videos! I am a behaviourist (www.dogidog.co.uk) and often use them to show clients how enthusiasm can make so much difference in their interactions with their dogs. You are a great role model particularly for the men. I share them all the time on Facebook. You asked for opinion and I gave it. Not a criticism of the content at all. x

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Well you really are awesome then! You obviously are a strong supporter of positive training and it's clear you do not expect something for free. Occasionally I'll have a knee-jerk reaction when people don't love the advertisements! LOLI love doing this more than anything and I want to make it work, and it is! But as it stands right now we do require amazing people like you who contribute to the crowdfunding campaign in addition to sponsors and add revenue. If anyone has a right to complain about the ads, it is definitely you. I'll trying keep the more exciting in the future!

    But we are trying hard to socialize our pup, not rushing.. the little fellow gets a little bit nervous and tends to bite (fear?), but not directly the other dog, just snapping the jaws in the air close to the other dog... Also - tug of war is nothing for our couch potatoe.
    But still - thumbs up and good luck with other vids!

    Thanks Zak. I have been watching your videos for about 4-6 months now and am grateful for your training techniques. I have been using your videos to brush up on my training for my 1 year old Aussie. I also have a 9 year old Aussie that has been socialized throughout his life but he has become more and more aggressive the older he gets. He generally becomes this way with other intact male dogs. He is also intact and has not been neutered. I'm guessing that he is just becoming a grumpy old dog but I hope that this is not the case. I'm always looking for videos on how to correct this behavior.

    Rebel and I went to the dog park for the 1st time yesterday. So awesome -there are two adjacent areas. One area had about nine dogs in it who all knew one another. We went into the other one by ourselves, which gave the other dogs a chance to visually see and observe my dog before any interaction. Rebel was a little reticent at first, but soon approached the chain link divider and did some running and happy barking...and some play posturing. Some of them ignored him and others returned the interest. Maybe next time I'll let him romp with them, but as you said...no rush.

    I have a 1.5 yr old pit that I rescued at 1 year. I live in an apartment with a dog run/dog park on property and she was not socialized when I got her. She does well with leashed meets, however, as soon as the leashes come off her first unleashed meet with another dog is a bit tense and typically ends in a scuffle. She has a handful of dogs that she can play in the park with, but she got into scuffles with almost all of them her first time meeting them. She's definitely a play alongside type of dog - chasing a ball or just walking around the park, but she is definitely not the kind of dog who can play with other dogs because she always takes it too far. She also gets very hyped when she sees other dogs playing rough and gets involved too aggressively. This is my first dog and I took her to a trainer who suggested the prong collar. During the time we did training, we used the prong collar because I didn't know any better with my first dog. I have since transitioned her from that collar and I am still having a hard time with her. Last night she met a new dog and she ended up leaving a mark on the dogs nose. Living in a city and in an apartment I don't have the freedom to say "I just won't take her to dog parks" I want to socialize her and she needs the exercise.

    My new pup is 13-14 weeks old. He's still very shy around new people and dogs, but warms up quickly when engaged. Namely, he wants people to sit on the floor, not stand or just bend down. He won't approach when someone is standing. He even keeps his distance from me if I try to just bend down to play/pet.
    He started playing with my parents' dog after a few minutes of nervousness. Contrary to your comment about keeping toys out of it, that was what got him to loosen up and engage the other dog. Throwing his toy and allowing the other dog to run with him seemed to make him more comfortable and realize that my parents' dog was friendly and just wanted to play. Of course, he used me as a "safe place" and checked in often while playing by jumping into my lap...

    I have a 4 month old Border Collie. I started getting him around my friend's grown dogs shortly after we brought him own at 9 weeks. Initially he was pretty reserved. After being around a dog for about 20 minutes he'd start to slowly come out of his shell. However, whenever anyone barked, he'd run and hide! We joined a puppy obedience class, and we're on week 4 of that now. He's had several chances to play with those dogs in the class, so that's helped a lot having him around smaller dogs. Each week, he's become more and more outgoing and has started to approach bigger dogs on his own in the class.

    Hey Zak,
    I love your videos and your Training Revolution book has been very insightful and pairs well with your TH-cam videos. I have a 8 week old pomsky puppy who is fearful of other dogs. I want to socialize him with other dogs but it is hard to do so during COVID-19 with all of the local socialization classes closed due to the nature of these sessions making it hard to comply with social distancing and other CDC guidelines. We have a few friends with dogs but they are big dogs and I’m interested in starting our social adventures with smaller dogs to ease him into it and not overwhelm him. Any thoughts on what else I can do?

    Just adopted a 1 y/o pit mix 3 weeks ago. Does really well with people, but goes berserk around other dogs. Taking him to the park is the best way to drain him but every time his playing gets way too rough and a fight breaks out! I don't notice anyone interested in having a more isolated "meet and greet" like your video demonstrated, and I'm losing confidence in his ability to adjust. I've only had him for 3 weeks but we work with him every day, he's getting trained (from Petco. Ugh), and we just started taking him to daycare, and on first day he cake home with bite marks and scratches all over him! It's almost a lost cause at this point but I'd happily listen to any other suggestions you might have that wasn't in the video. 🙏

My dog, Sid, is quite nervous of other dogs, but he will act slightly aggressive if he knows there is a safe fence between him and the dog! But my greatest difficulty in teaching him is to listen to me. If something interesting is around, he'll be very distracted. Though, he doesn't pull on the leash. It's more like selective hearing? When introduced to any other dog, she doesn’t sniff other dogs right away like normal, she goes into play with front paws going towards the other dogs face like she’s boxing. Zak - my Kali is a Golden Retriever and approx. 5 years old. She is a rescue from Taiwan. She was abandoned and alone for we don't know how long until someone found her and took her to a shelter where was rescued. I've had her for 6 months and she is an absolute sweetheart in all ways except around other dogs. She barks and lunges and if she was not on a leash I'm not sure what she would do. I can't tell if it is aggression or anxiety - maybe both. Another pet owner suggested that she was trying to protect me but I think it is more conditioning from being a stray for so long. She is willing to be distracted most of the time and does well to engage with me when I ask her to "watch me" as we move quickly along passing the other dog. We have another dog - much smaller two years old - who she gets along just great with cuddling, sharing toys, etc. No food aggression or really any other negative qualities. I would really like to get her to overcome this behavior and will appreciate any guidance you can provide. I would love to see a video on this topic - it seems other pet owners responding here have similar issues. Thanks.

    New to Zak - We rescued Penny, a Foxhound mix, at 5-6 months. She's a year old now. I took her to a dog park several times over the months to socialize. I thought she was doing okay, but as time went by (and she got bigger) it became obvious that she was a target dog (a term I learned later). The easy answer to this was, supposedly, not take her to a dog park ever. She's pretty passive for her size and is energetic, but I'd like to know if there is a trait a target dog has that can be corrected.

    Hi, Zak! I have a four year old mutt. I've had her since she was seven months old, but she was a rescue from a hoarding situation. I don't know much about her life before me except that she was malnourished, had pneumonia, and was very skittish at first. Nowadays, she's very sweet and energetic and loving. She loves every human, and likes a lot of cats (even if they don't like her). The one problem we keep having is other dogs. It just recently became a problem because at my old house we were very secluded in the woods so she only ever met three either dogs she lived with. However, now, we live in an apartment where she has to go to the dog park. She's not violent, but anytime there's another dog she will get very nervous and try to ignore them. If they sniff her she'll freeze put her ears down and put her tail between her legs. I'm wondering how I can get her confidence up and help her to not be afraid of every other dog. I think it has something to do with her past in her old home, but I'm not sure. Thank you!

    I could tell my dog was a bit scared of other people when she was only like ten weeks old (she had had her shots by then) and she peed in a pet store. My dad went to get something to clean it up, and I stayed and watched her. A lady walked by, and she went crazy. She went to puppy training class, and socializing classes, and one night she became friends with a German Shepherd puppy who was also scared, and they ran around the pen. They had their scared dogs club. But she is now 5, and she is an amazing dog. She still barks at people, but she goes on walks, and is able to run free with her sister.
