So many people are short circuited early in their attempts to train their dog because their dog jumps and they become frustrated and stop. Share this video to help others learn how to effectively communicate with their dog without force!

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!
I am a certified dog trainer, and have countless of owners come to me that don't know how to train their dog without using physical correction. Time and time again I talk to them about the cons and problems that can occur to dog and owner bond if you use force, and pain to gain. And it is so relieving to find people like you on the internet that use positive reinforcement, like me, that teach the New way to train the companions. Its a sigh of relief. Keep up the great work

@@springrollwang4441 Personally, I really do not like Cesar and i never really did because I thought he was kind of schtick and unnecessarily risky but when I saw him punch a golden lab in the chest when s/he snapped at Cesar, that was it for me, I don't care how he explains it. I was appalled.

Man, patience is definitely key. I keep getting so frustrated. My black lab goes nuts and she lunges at family members, strangers, etc and tries to jump up on them. She just gets so freaking excited and is hard to control. Thank you for this video though. I know that I have to maintain my patience and really stay dedicated to teaching my dog to behave properly. I like what you said about when you see a friend as you're walking down the street. I am guilty of focusing half my attention on our convo and half of my attention on my dog just saying "no! Don't! Sit! Stay!" like a damn idiot. I need to get better at taking control of the situation and saying outright that I am trying to teach my dog to not jump on people like that.

Zak George's Dog Training rEvolution what do you do when a 5 month old golden retriever rolls over and will not come or go anywhere. They just lay down and I have to pick them up. Even treats won't work, nor toys to get her to come or move. It's usually with somewhere she don't want to go.
Zak George's Dog Training rEvolution my dog Lexie (not the German Shepard puppy) is 9, fab dog love of my life, but she jumps on men to be aggressive. Women she puts her head down wags her tail and wants some affection. Men she looks squarely in their face and if they give any interest she wants to pull and jump on them and she nips them in the hands, arm, chest. Now I'm going to be honest, I've trained her well with sitting and laying on command. She knows not to approach anyone without my approval so there is never a concern of her pulling and attacking a man, but even her sitting or lying next to me her mouth is open she is panting and all her excitement is directed at him. Now if he ignores her, the panting and fixation goes away when he leaves, but if he gives her attention, "like hello girl, how are you?" It just heightens her aggression. At that point you can see she is holding it in as much as she can, either sitting or laying, but me trying to distract her or move her heightens the fixation. I've learned to have her just stay seated and wait until the man leaves and when he does and she is calm, release and reward with with affection. So her aggressive behavior towards men hasn't gotten better and I've had her for seven years. Note she was found abandoned and obviously had some traumatic experiences with men as she has never liked them. The only ones have been my brother and Dad. She is "a mature" dog and at this point I feel it's just doing what I'm doing, but because of it, I don't let anyone except me walk her for fear she may attack a man while walking, or she may come across a skateboard. Same is the case with a skateboard. She hears it she has the same reaction. In the garage, I wanted to see what she would do and she bites it especially the wheels and scratches it. Funny thing is someone told me to try get her to ride on it and I did. She actually liked it, but her excitement is such at it extreme she can only do it for a moment then wants to flip it and eat the wheels. I tried to have a trainer help and she ended up nipping her. Needless to say after the trainer got frustrated and started cussing at my dog and threatening her in front of me, I just got frustrated and really thought it's something I need to cope with it. If a professional can't help and she does better with me, maybe it's just I have to deal with it.

Hi Zak, I have a 5 months old Lab puppy. He loves jumping on us a lot. He stays in the back yard mostly, So when I get home, he starts jumping. I don't open the door until he sits down. When he sits down, then I open the door and ask him to shake for a Hi, then treat him, but as soon as I step forward few steps, he jumps. Saying No, ignoring, even pushing him down with my knee or on his shoulders don't work. He knows all the sit, stay, and watch me commands well. Can you give me any idea on how to stop him from jumping on us first rather than guests.

Would love to see how to walk a huge, 165lb Great Dane, on a flat collar and leash. Not all the other gimmicks. He pulls hard. Walks well on pinch. Hates the halti and gentler leader walker. Still pulls on the walker and halti.
Get the huge version of this: www.cannyco.us/ ... works really well, much better than the gentle leader imo. This tool also allows you to ween your dog off the face harness concept as you can easily put on and off the nose bit. Take it off when she starts getting better, put it back on if she falters and needs a pick-me-up. This doesn't twist their head/neck around like the gentle leader, but rather puts pressure on the snout and pushes their head down toward the ground. It almost auto-corrects.

I've tried "removing myself" when my pit bull starts jumping on me but he doesn't let me go. He'll run in front of me, bark, growl, and worse of all, bite my feet. Very frustrating.
Chris Tran I have a pitbull they did the same thing. Minus the bark and growl. I’ve noticed she responds to sound. So every time she jumps I snap my finger or clap and ignore her. She gets no touch unless she’s in a calm state. It takes consistency but it works! Good luck with your pittie :)

IMO pit bulls don't listen. If your dog is growling at you and it's a pit bull.... you should think about the dangers. Maybe you could google "pit bull attacks," there was another fatal one a few weeks ago OF THE FAMILY DOG. Pit bulls aren't like other dogs, so most rules about dogs don't apply to them. Some cities have banned them and I'm all for that. And I love dogs and wolves. I'm serious. I might be in trouble here because Zak has a pit bull mix, but that's my honest to god opinion.
@@mandyinseattle agree to disagree! I have a stray pit and shes a rescued stray I adopted. Shes well obedient and were now working on our jogging together! Shes also into tracking deer/elk sheds! So yeah....

So we have an Australian cattle dog and her name is Corra. We've had her since she was 6 weeks old and she is a year old actually next week. I'm trying to fix the damage I have done. I was raised to train a dog in a harsher way I'm really embarrassed to admit it but I just didn't know any different. No I didn't beat her but I did smack her nose or if she jumps I put my knee out and after doing research I realized I was wrong on my training. She nevered learnt anything from this type of training if anything it has just made her kinda scared of me I feel. How can I repair the damage I caused? What are the best ways to make a dog listen? Please no one post nasty comments I already feel pretty stupid and now I'm trying to fix it.
Hey Jordan, I feel your pain.. Cora's only a year old, don't despair. Now you know you were using the wrong techniques, you can change that. At least you're intelligent to realise you were wrong. That's big stuff. Play with her (her favourite game) and give her good massages...
I've been learning various techniques to train dogs for the past three years and the times the dogs I've worked with listen most is when I speak quietly...sometimes I whisper and for me, there's no need to repeat their name or the command a dozen times to get a result.:)x

Exactly what mine does, like he'll die if he doesn't get to jump on them. It really sounds psycho. He only does it at home. If we're out, he sits nicely when someone approaches him to pet him.

You really think they'd run out of energy soon, but it's like they never do! My dog Chi-Chi just keeps jumping and licking constantly. I try to ignore her when she does it n tell her to sit, but that only works for 2 seconds tops.

How to stop a 5 month old retriever mix from biting hands and clothes?... 😖
Ignore him. If that doesn't work, put him into another room and only let him go back to you when he is calm. Only give him attention when he is calm. When you play with him or pet him and he starts biting your arms/clothes, stop immediately and only continue when he is calm. I also realized that if he does it while walking it helps to tell him something else to do. Just do a little training exercise and then continue walking (I've got the same problem with my dog and that's how I do it. It takes time though)

You didn't help me with my 10 month old Lab's jumping problem. I am without ideas now as she doesn't respond to anything I do. Including ignoring her, she just jumps up on my back if I walk away and she chases me. I can't close her in a room when I come home without her first jumping on me and I can't put her out without her first jumping on me. It would be good if you showed how to stop your own dog jumping on yourself without a leash. She doesn't live in the house with a leash on all the time. Thanks.

Zak George's Dog Training rEvolution I have the same issue with my black lab/great dane mix. We've only had him a week and he's 5 months old....but those paws are huge and I'm covered in bruises. I will be checking out the new video!
Say no and apply punishment (btw the punishment does not have to be instantaneous). This is the quickest way to get your dog to stop jumping. Positive reinforcement is a tricky path to conquer through dogs when stimuli is more enticing than treats. Ignoring a dog only does so much.

Positive reinforcement should concur with punishment, the two go hand-in-hand making the best combination. My first paragraph made it sound like PR was bad lol.

I love your videos! I do go to a trainer and also utilize your teaching as well! My trainer matches what you teach but you definitely add to what I learn from her!
When i turn my back, i get my dog jumping on the back of my legs.
You can't even know how much help I need with my dog...she's biting, jumping on strangers that doesn't like it, getting distracted by everything like cats other dogs people kids even bags flying in the street! she have too much energy and for 6 months since I found her I can't teach her stop pulling the leash and I used your tips, she puts so much power into it until she chokes herself, she never listens to me when outside, and when indoors it takes many times until she listens, she's stealing food from the trash, eats from the floors, she's running from side to side when she doesn't get our food or something else she wants, she's too aggressive with her toys (barking on them and attacking them) and loosing interest after 5 minutes like what happens when she plays with the Kong Wobbler, she doesn't want to stop barking especially if there are people in the house...I tried so hard and spent hours with her trying to teach her...but in the last 6 months there are no results...do you have some suggestions?
Wow, that isn't a good dog. A really great trainer could probably get results eventually but a difficult dog will probably always be difficult. It is much easier to train a dog that has a good temperament and obedient disposition. Dog lovers will hate me for saying this but the best thing you can do is get rid of this dog. It usually isn't hard to find a new home for a dog by putting it on Craigslist if you can't bear to take it to a shelter. (Don't be tempted to take the dog back if the new owner doesn't want it.) It may seem cruel but too many people waste their time on dogs that just won't listen. There are many, many wonderful dogs being put to death in animal shelters every day. Do yourself a huge favor: Go visit a shelter and choose a dog that is calm, friendly and quiet or buy one from a reputable breeder. A good breeder breeds for good temperament as well as other breed standards.
It will be hard to part with your dog if you're attached to her but you'll get over it and you'[ll save yourself years of aggravation. Your neighbors will probably thank you if the dog is barking a lot.
Karin Blum I disagree with Cory a little bit. Watch caesar Milan on dogs that don't have a calm state of mind. A calm state of mind isn't like a personality trait it can taught with a lot of effort and persistence, a dog that does have a calm state of mind can actually lose that if it disciplined correctly. I'm having the same problem with my 5 month old pup, but I know I'm not going to give up, because I know even if i feel like I haven't made much progress, giving him up is going to make him go another step back. I would suggest work on one problem at a time instead of trying to do all at once, try teacher her tricks like sit, stay, leave it, come when called if you can get her to learn those tricks and do them in any sort of situation, you're making a lot of progress and also dogs are very consistent so you need to be as well, try your best to always give her the same exact treatment every time she does that specific thing whether it's wrong or right for example if she sits quietly playing with her toy, praise her and even interact with the toy with her ( this will help her not get bored of the toy as well ) whereas if she chews up something or does something bad stop her with the same tone and consequence, shel learn okay I'm not going to ever get away with doing that and I prefer the attention I get when I play with my other toys. Please don't give I know it's frustrating but most dogs in those shelters are in them for that exact reason they are too hard to handle .
Amanda Murphy you think i didn't tried all of this? she knows all of those commands! but she doesn't wanna do them, i need to call her name 10 times and repeat the command 10 times until she feels like listen to me, as said in this video, im trying to look at her eyes but she moves her head away from me every time and every little noise distract her, sometimes when i mad at her i repeat the word sit two or 3 times and she looks in my eyes and refuse to do it, then i repeat it slowly like: s--i...
and before i complete it she sits, in my eyes it looks like she understand what the word is and what i want her to do but she doesn't want to do it. it's frustrating

How to learn your dog not to fart

its kinda funny, you really dont believe in the dominance thing, but you are a confident and sure when working with dogs. Thats the alpha .
Dogs don't have alphas. They generally don't have "leaders" but studies show that with feral dogs the closest dog to a leader is the one with the most friends. Do not make the mistake of thinking dogs are wolves because they are not. Despite being close relatives they are extremely different.
Zak is confident because he knows his work, but he gets results not with confidence but by understand the dog. There's no "dominance" in this training whatsoever, and in the dog world dominant simply means he who gets the resources (toys, food, etc...) and it's never achieved through aggression.
Grizz Lee wrong. dogs do have alpha's. With out a doubt they do. What planet do you live in? what types of dogs do you deal with?
Grizz Lee Incorrect, Wolves are more than 'close relatives' of the dog. They're the Adam and Eve of the domesticated canine world (or Adam and Lilith if you choose to believe that portion), all breeds of domesticated dogs descend from wolves.
They do recognize leaders hence why some can behave like the house revolved around them, this is them making THEMSELVES the leader. A lot of Animal Planet trainers talk about establishing yourself as "Pack leader". This is done with confidence because they feed off your vibes.
Cesar Millan for example who is known as 'The Dog Whisperer' preached the Pack leader/confidence tip in a special appearance on a favorite show of mine. This show is fictional but since he's a real expert not an actor the tip was likely real.
After all when you're attempting to show you're dog that he needs to follow your rules not vise versa is that not establishing yourself as the leader?
ShadowOnTheWall iTruth1 You're dealing with semantics for the most part, but you appear to also be stuck in the past, unwilling to leave myths and stereotypes behind (ie: Cesar Millan's methods of training & out-dated understanding of canine behavior). It would do you and your dogs a world of good if you researched animal behavior and science- based positive behavior modification programs which are reward-based training developed by veterinarians and animal behavior specialists who understand canine ethology, cognition research, and the science of learning and training rather than aversion training used by Mr. Millan who has limited understanding and training in the science of canine cognition. Due to his lack of staying on top of the latest research he continues to use coercion rather than cooperation and brute force as a path to behavior change. His beliefs on hierarchy within dog packs has long been debunked, yet he continues to use it to explain his methods. Sure, he may get fast results (or that's what you see), but how closely have you looked at how the dogs relate to him? Have you seen the fear in their eyes? Do you understand that so much of the body language these dogs are displaying is also fear based? Have you seen the videos of him choking dogs who don't listen to him? Please, educate yourself using current scientifically backed, peer-reviewed, reliable, and reproduce-able research (all of which is easily found and accessible). You'll not only understand the difference between leadership, dominance, and alpha, you'll be much more effective when training your dogs and have a significantly better relationship with them. Thank you so much for these videos. I just got a golden retriever and he is my first big dog. I’ve always had very small dogs, so some of the things the golden retriever is doing are different issues for a different dog. He’s definitely high energy, and your tips make so much sense. Dear Zak, your videos are huge help in training our puppy! She learnt a lot already including sit, stay, paw, high five :), can even wave bye bye hehe, and now we are training to prevent her from jumping which she does a lot out of excitement when she sees someone or even us as owners and leash pulling :))

Our 3 year old, 110 pound, lab shepherd mix is a frantic happy jumper guest greeter. I'm so happy to have found this video, and going to give it my best go. We've always tried supervising visitors to work with the 'four-on-the-floor' for attention rule, but to no lasting behavior changes.

Zak, I really enjoy your videos and find them so helpful. I am using your instruction and I am starting to see positive results. Jumping is a big issue for me. I am constantly being cut by my dog’s claws. I am on blood thinners so I bleed a lot. Thanks for your suggestions. I will certainly use them.

Thank you for this tip my dog is very good with the sitting and staying and waiting but not good when it come to being over excited and jumping on myself and my friends and family and new people seem to find him a bit scary to approach sometimes but he really is a sweet dog once you know him
