At first, I thought it was cool. You get paid for walking in and out of an elevator every day. Then came the realization that the other side of that elevator is unending slavery.
@Nohandleentered could be less than that. Go in and then feel tired like you've worked all day. The innies explained it like the opposite. Step in the elevator at the end of the day and you come right back out feeling energized like you got a good night's sleep.
Also, you may be able to separate the personality and the memories, but trauma damages a different part of your brain. Being enslaved and tortured will ABSOLUTELY still affect you
I really liked that Adam Scotts character wasn't perfect. He could be a coward. He had a tendency to drink to excess, and to say ugly things when he does. It was refreshing
the worst, most cringy, most appalling scene for him is when he rips up the pic of gemma, but its also the most kind, honest, and compelling scene with a blink and youll miss it plot changing twist
Severance is one of those shows where you think you understand the premise but it takes you to its last 2 episodes to really understand the implications of such a life.
What struck me most about the series was that I realized that the innies felt more alive than the outies and now I use it to see if I'm in outie or innie mode, it made me realize that I was living on automatic, it's ironic because they are locked up but they have the desire to break free while the others are the opposite.
The show captures and explains the irony of how I have experienced being happy at jobs I have hated because I am cut off from the forces that sent me there. The innies are trapped physically and superficially but the outies are trapped emotionally and profoundly. It makes sense that a version of themselves "optimised" for productivity is also more revolutionary and willing to resist the oppression they both suffer.
Wow. Having watched this show 3 times, listened to some episodes of the Severed pod, and taken many notes, I've never thought of it that way... Thank you for your perspective!
That was a great video - thanks! There is an interview with Dan Erickson where he talks about how Ben Stiller recognized that the core of the Mark character, and the core of the show, is pain, sadness, and loss. And how Ben then guided the show away from the surreal Terry Gilliam type script into the Severance we know and love. They also say that Severance is a very INTP/INFP show, and your closing thoughts are very similar to what is discussed in "The Productive INTP" book by Paul Peters. I'm not sure if Dan is an INTP or ENTP, but the influence of INFP Ben ensures that the show is very Introvert oriented.
I think the show is filled with deeper clues to the effects of the severance. Irving clearly has dreams from his innie while outside, just as he dreams of black paint while dozing inside. I assume he doesn't get enough sleep on the outside, and is probably haunted by nightmares of entering the break room, which is what he's been painting over and over again. Meanwhile, I'll lay money that Helly R. is secretly depressive on the outside, but is so dissociated from herself in general that she doesn't see it. But I'll bet, once we get to know her better in the next season, that it'll be revealed she's never had a real say in her life-choices, that it's all been decided for her by her family. Inside is the only time she gets to acknowledge, even to herself, that she's trapped in her life. As for Mark, I think he's still grieving after all this time because of his exposure to his wife on the inside. She made it clear that she feels a bond with him, even though neither remember who they were to one another. So whenever he sees her inside, his grief is refreshed, unable to fade. It's even possible this is done deliberately, to keep him in a state of misery. This is, after all, the reason he's there in the first place. can't decide if the show is heading toward the idea that each character's two separate memory streams will eventually be re-integrated, or if the ultimate good is for their innie selves to become the only self left. It seems like reintegrating can kill them, so I'm not sure that will ever be an option. But if all of them become their innie selves permanently, and re-emerge into their lives as this new person, there might be a certain poetry to that.

It was filmed at Bell labs, but they did (kind of) luck out with the timing of the Corona epedemic. That emptyness you see in the streets, the parking lot, and other locations is a function of the lockdown, and it matches the vibe of the show perfectly.
I’ve watched every single theory and video essay on this show. This is my favorite. Side note: Your outie has great thumbnail and video editing skills 📂
Oh my god dude. This was like... Holy cow dude you have such a talent. This brought me insight into a show I thought I'd already understood. Excellent stuff.
Thanks for this video Andrew and for your honesty and vulnerability in sharing your personal experience with sadness, angst and longing in this life. Glad you are here watching with us and I for one am definitely cheering you on!
This is an absolutely wonderful video. A rare gem that I will come back to when I am feeling writers block, the eloquence makes me absolutely spiteful. I will write and create because of it. Thank you.
Man, this was my first time watching one of your videos and I happened to click on it while trying to push back a little bit against a sudden mood swing (and there are a few factors I can try and pinpoint as the cause for it), but the soothing music and the pacing of your narration made all of that just wash over me. And I'm really grateful that things shifted a little during and after watching it. Thank you, Andrew! You have a new fan. I'll be checking your work and your upcoming videos. Cheers!
Excellent overview and insights. One of my most favorite show seasons ever. Adam Scott's portrayal of Mark was so devastating, and much I could/can identify with. As you mention, Ben Stiller, and the amazing supporting cast and writing ... what a show.
This is really great work. I love the way you put the essay together, the pacing, the soundtrack, and the insights you offer- finally, the questions you end on and your own personal experience. Severance was one of those uncomfortable nine hours that I couldn't stop watching despite the overall sensation of ennui and instability the show creates. Thanks for putting this together.
You have an amazing talent for voice over. I truly enjoyed watching this and your commentary on one of my favorite shows. Please continue producing these the world needs more of these and less TikTok dances!
Great video. What I found fascinating about this series was its take that a same subconscious can give rise to totally different personalities and drives...
Such good quality video essays always shine a different light on the discussed material, and I feel like I can experience the product again in a way and on a level, that never occured to me by just watching the series. This video essay adds a new layer to the show and is just so masterfully scripted and presented, that I'm instantly subscribed. Keep pushing on, *andewr*, keep writing those words. I wonder if we'll find out what they do on those computers - are we being shown what's on their screens as they see it or how it really is? Is it something horrific? I like the theory that they're literally doing nothing, the product that theyre selling is themselves. Lumon wants to show that they can make severed employees work diligently on something absolutely meaningless.

dear andrew, your video has made me feel Something. the wiring in my brain is all torn up so i can't tell you what, but i feel something in my chest. an Emotion. i'm in the place you said anything would be better than in your intro. no plans, no drive - just waiting, like you said. maybe that resonated with me? i don't know; i can't place it. i'm glad you stirred something inside me, though. i'm sorry if my comment is a little vague and scatterbrained, i think it's the best i can do. i hope you're having a nice week; i'll try to remember you so i can cheer you on in the future.
After rewatch I agree they did not answer enough questions for it being a full season, but this show is absolutely incredible. I love everything about it and I hope season 2 is good 🤞🏼
Stumbled upon your channel with this video and saw you also did one on Master of None. Hope I'm just in time for your comeback! Keepthe great videos comming!
I wondered why Dylan would take a job like this when he has a kid, but I’m wondering now if he’s a single parent and it’s the only way he can provide for his kid, or alternatively, he doesn’t have full custody of his kid so maybe the job makes waiting for the next visit easier.
I think a Severance arrangement would be undesirable for a single parent. You would not want to be inaccessible for 8 hours of the day - you want to be able to be notified immediately if any emergencies arise. That’s why I’m guessing he is still with his partner. An idea I read from someone else: Milchik tells Dylan that he has two more kids. That may be ‘technically’ true but also misleading (like all of Lumon-code-speak), and that one of his other children died, and he took the job to cope with the loss just as Mark did. Obviously it’s just speculation - we won’t know until we know. But that theory makes me so sad for Dylan - Severance will literally amplify the tragedy for him. He had to suffer the loss as an outie, and if his innie can successfully uncover more truths, then his innie will experience the same tragedy all over again.
Desperation. He can’t provide for them otherwise. I have seen so many men destroy themselves to provide for their family, because they are desperate to provide but are unable to do so without getting a job that kills them a little bit day by day. This is also why Dylan is obsessed with perks, he still carries his desire to provide down there but he doesn’t know what it is. He can’t access his pay, so he looks to accumulate more, but he doesn’t know why, so he accumulates for accumulation sake.
If real, I'd choose not to sever, despite everything that I've been through. When you're sticking out a difficult shift at work, knowing what you have at home, who you are, what you are, is the ultimate carrot on a stick no company could hope to replace. Sacrificing that knowledge ultimately leads to rediscovering it. You can't scoop out your soul and still expect to function just the same.
I think outtie Irving is doing that with a purpuse. He is shown to be on a quest to expose lumon and it seems like he is desperatly trying to stay awake all the time so that his innie will fall asleep on the job, probably outtie Irving believes that by doing so he will manage to get some conscious time while in lumon
I originally thought that Mark's timeline before the events of the show didn't make sense, because I was imagining the reasoning you described: "He could be free from the pain 8 hours a day." But that doesn't make sense. Severed workers are briefed that they will experience work time as an instant jump-cut to the end of the day, he would know that he's losing 50% or more of his time to process and grieve, stretching out his misery as much as possible. No one would choose that on its own. You see him struggle to verbalize this when Rickens' friends start criticizing Lumon, but he can only repeat the corporate lie that it helps separate work and home life. He's not doing it to escape from emotions, he's doing it because he couldn't work while grieving. He was being bankrupted by his grief, and was forced to find a job that he could hold independent of his personal struggles. Lumon put him in a position where he had the "free will" to decide between becoming severed or starving.
You can never stop trying, that's the purpose of life. Thank you for such a thought provoking and intimate analysis of Severance. Much like with you, the show left me pondering similar life questions. How would I manage if I lost my wife like Mark S? I would be absolutely irreparably broken. My heart would be shattering into an infinite amount of pieces. How would others see me? As raw and as transparent as I could possibly be, which is how I live now. That isn't always the best for everyone's ears. But pure human emotion cannot be ignored. I connected with Mark's character because I too have experienced loss in many ways. The one thing I have learned in the process and during the journey; is that you can never stop trying, that's the purpose of life. Once we stop trying, we die.
I haven't watched the show, but the topics you talked about and the questions you reached were very intriguing. I watched the whole thing. What do we do when we sad? It is a question I think any of us have to answer on our own as one answer would not satisfy the other. I can't say I know the answer for myself as clear as I would like. Though, your video helps me think about it. Thank you for your video and your thoughts.
This is beautiful. Have been obsessed with the show since it came out, and getting super hyped with the Season 2 release date. But this video actually wrecked me just now. i have been thinking so much about severance lately because of the scene where helly first sees a scary number. fear is how "they" (capitalism) keeps us separate
Great analysis, the inherent sadness of it all. A question though: What music did you use for this video? It’s so meloncholy and relaxing, exactly my vibe haha.
At first, I thought it was cool. You get paid for walking in and out of an elevator every day. Then came the realization that the other side of that elevator is unending slavery.

I originally thought that Mark's timeline before the events of the show didn't make sense, because I was imagining the reasoning you described: "He could be free from the pain 8 hours a day." You see him struggle to verbalize this when Rickens' friends start criticizing Lumon, but he can only repeat the corporate lie that it helps separate work and home life.
He's not doing it to escape from emotions, he's doing it because he couldn't work while grieving. He was being bankrupted by his grief, and was forced to find a job that he could hold independent of his personal struggles. Thanks Andrew. That was touching.
Great video dude I'm glad I found it.
Phenomenal video essay. Pacing and tone against the information provided was excellent. Are you writing screenplays? Regardless, great work!
Thank you! Yes I am, my first short film will be released this fall.
i actually started watching severance because of me stumbling upon this video essay due to the title referencing the Smashing Pumpkins album lol.
looking forward to season 2
this is an amazing video
this video fits PERFECTLY on my ultrawide monitor in fullscreen lmao. this aspect ratio is so rare for youtube
It fits on my samsung galaxy zoom to fill full screen perfectly too :D
InCREDible video !
I’m going to watch this, thank you!!
love the videos man keep up
Brilliant stuff
Great video
Reminds me of Cary Jo Fukunaga's Maniac
i have been thinking so much about severance lately because of the scene where helly first sees a scary number. fear is how "they" (capitalism) keeps us separate
That was really good. Thank you.
Great analysis, the inherent sadness of it all. A question though: What music did you use for this video? It’s so meloncholy and relaxing, exactly my vibe haha.
I feel like you're a big BREADSWORD fan
I cheer you on Andrew
great essay :)
All I want to know is, when is it returning for a second season? So, that I can cancel my subscription with Apple.
AMAZING video!!!
