The primary inspiration for this video came from an essay writer and blogger known as kathy: katy.substack....
Still blows my mind the same guy that helped write this and directed it is the same guy that made Zoolander. What a career. World doesnt deserve Ben Stiller.
The uncanny of comedy and the uncanny of horror are always separated by the thinest of margins.
Ben Stiller is a gift to humanity
The secret life of Walter Mitty is brilliant too
don't forget tropic thunder !! Ultimate comedy classic churner outer this guy.
@@bookendjam That's an awesome line!!! Is that yours? Such a great quote!!
I am so honored to have worked on this video!
Also, it doesn't take place in Delaware.
Got a lot of nearby Pennsylvania tidbits in there, and PE could be an abbreviation for Pennsylware, whatever might have brought about a place like that! :)
I always thought Severance was a sort of adaptation of I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. Our Narrators, the protagonists, and Lumen/Management, AM. The waffles, well, they're just plain delicious.
The egg tray is coveted as fuck
Man I love that new theories pop up even so long after the show aired.
But there will be a second season, right, RIGHT?
@@makhalid1999 season 2 has been announced, the airdate has not, but apparently most of it has already been filmed.
@@makhalid1999UPDATE FOR YOU! The second season will be released I believe in January 2025! I’m sure you’ve heard already but I just saw your comment lol
I get so happy every time I see a new Severance video. For such a Masterpiece, it's quite underrated. Love ur video!
It unfortunately hasn’t seen enough success that it truly deserves because it’s an Apple TV+ original.
Their platform has around 25 million users. Compare that to Netflix’s over 230 million users, Disney+ over 150 million users… The show hasn’t been given the same opportunity, which is an absolute shame
Just a few minutes in and I love the music, your tone-attitude, bringing other books into it, and most importantly, “Hey that’s the name of the show!”
Video’s editor here! I’m always very proud of any Arrested Development reference I can make in my work! Thanks for the comment!
lol "cartooney old timey hobo can"
Great breakdown, thanks for the essay!
WE NEED SEASON TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Ok HUGE PROPS to the editor and creator cause this video is WELL DONE. 10/10 👏👏👏
Nice one :)
I hope we never find out what Lumen really does. The mystery is far better than any explanation could ever be.
No or love to find out the truth at the end of the series run
Mark s ID said 2020 so it can’t be 15 years beyond or before that
As far as _Severance_ not having a lot of twists, I'd rather hear a story I know told very well, than a new story told poorly.
thank you for putting that bit from arrested development in lol
Great video! This show is chock full of details and I always love hearing other people uncover new ones I've missed in my viewings
One of the best videos from a tiny channel I've ever seen
well done, you got me with the clickbait and kept me with the essay, good job
Girl YOU ARE TOO SMART! Look at you, I see you, go ahead and do your thing, girl!
9:07 You're right. It's not entirely true. melon gets tastier all the time.
there's an interesting thing about Jame Eagan no one ever mentions, is that he's the only one that wears a jacket with a trimmed conservative collar. only other time i've seen that is in a couple futuristic Sci-fi films, ALIENS, at Ripley's debriefing, and in Blade Runner. so is he from the future, or maybe a alternate universe where they are more advanced, technologically? 🤔
Noticing a trend where people who are mostly known for comedy seem to excel at horror and horror-adjacent projects (thrillers I guess?). Jordan Peele, Zach Cregger, John Krasinski, Kevin Smith of course, and now even Ben Stiller.
Worth noting however, Ben Stiller did not conceptualize the show, but he certainly saw the value in making sure it came to fruition! Props to him for that and recognizing talent.
Happy to be the 200th subscriber :)
We need more reviews like this
subbed bc of this video, it was so insightful! looking forward to whatever u upload next
Great video. The editing is really fantastic. Nice balance between theme exploration and plot speculation- excited to see what you put out next
Beth-Ann Donaldson thusly theorizes all about the conspiracy of corporate entities
Anyone else notice how there are four tempors and four categories in macro data refinement
And you see two of the categories names
Fr (frolic most likely)
Dr (dread)
Also all the files have human names 🤔
Gosh dang it I thought I found a new severance video but damnit all if I won’t rewatch 😂😂
I would argue the "outie" (official term of the show) parts are the ghosts of the characters in this show. The "mundane" (my choice of term) life are where the repressed memories and histories really haunt, and this clean, simple, "infantilized" world, the "work" life, is how they chose to live. In other words, we are the ghosts haunting this earth.
Wonderful video! I am commenting for engagement/algorithm purposes because this video deserves to get picked up
Apple devices exist in the world of Severance but not in the severed world. The only cell phone we see on the severed floor is Milchick’s phone which has a pronounced antenna.
Only 30 seconds in and I’m sold
0:58 doesn't it take place in Kier, Pennsylvania? From S1E9, when Irving pulls out that map to find Burt?
it takes place in upstate ny
It would make sense how mark’s wife is still “alive” as an Innie even though she died irl.
Great video. Thank you
Fantastic quality
Underrated video keep making vids like this!
“Because Apple doesn’t exist”
But girl it’s literally on Apple TV 🙈
All the more reason they are not the evil in a dystopian series.
Fantastic. Subbed.
You made me watch it :3
How’d you like it?
shows in 2020. the date is on marc's badge
EXCELLENT video ♥
i do not f=cking know what I just watched, but it looked intriguing
Go online and read the Lexington letter written by Ben Stiller as an unseen character on the show who Lumon murdered aka she accidentally died in a car crash.... Just read it.
Love this show and appreciate your theory. Thought provoking. Hoping the writers strike doesn’t delay second season too long 😢
I think that the lumon workers ARE the chip in their head. As if it wasn't bad enough already.
What do you mean
Great video!
What if someone gets sick?
Milcheck!
Woop woop!! That's my mutal!!! She's so talnted!!! 🎉🎉
5:18 yeah it's not about what lumon is doing but also based on what there doing mark and his colleagues are at least one of the products lumon will sell. It's business to business and business to government sort of product. Not the individuals but the technology and methodologies there designing and training.
Theirs also the case of the board of directors probably being made up of past lumon CEOs who have uploaded there minds to some sort of shared neural activity emulator that gives them a sort of virtual immortality but I digress.
I never watched that show doll house were all familiar with the technology in the matrix that allows neo to know kungfu or trinity to fly a helicopter. we know of star treks borg Jupiter brains and upload heavens? so many ways I could guess they were going with this. besides the visual media it's in the written media as well.
But they are the lab mice and some of the other department seem to be making materials for others to control there own versions of lab mice once they get the license. you probably said all that in the video but I sort of started writing half way in.
Video’s editor here. I like this theory a lot! The B2B dealings are probably spot on.
It’s criticism about muh capitalism and Drumpf amirite fellow redditors ?
I love the video but would find it easier to listen to without the background jazz 😂
Nuh uh
Annoying music.
I wish the people who narrate these videos would learn to speak slowly and precisely. It's also distracting when they mispronounce words (like obs-fu-cation instead of ob-fu-scation) and names(Elaina instead of Helena and Regabh-ai instead of Regabh -ee)
Are you a fuckin high school teacher dude? Chill lol
Listen to it at .75 speed and learn to deal with mispronunciations like an adult
@@christheghostwriter Who TF are you to tell me
@@carlbergevin8376 who tf are you to complain about the person who worked on this video? Go make your own video if you're such a picky expert
Goodness just awful music and could your AI speak any faster? I’m out!
Man. I wish I was an AI. Life would be so much easier.
It's about addiction to pharmaceutical drugs post trauma.
Though, I've enjoyed your video and theory. Thanks.
Too arrogant with pure speculation
It's elegant white collar horror. What a show!
This is such a well edited and written video essay that took on a new perspective ! So yummy!
Pretty sure I heard that the show creators stated it was in a parallel universe
Well done, and congrats on 10k views!
This is just what I wanted from a Severance analysis.
The only ghost talked about in this show is the specter of communism. Mark is literally reading a shitty hallmark version of Karl Marx/ Fredrick Engels.
"Our Job Is To Taste Free Air. Your So-Called Boss May Own The Clock That Taunts You From The Wall, But, My Friends, The Hour Is Yours."
The Innies are slaves with no control over their lives. Their life is work and nothing else. No matter what treats the company may give them to stop them from organizing they still are slaves. The Innies in the show literally are organizing against the company on company time to gain their own autonomy. On a smaller level it could be about forming a union and what it takes to organize but on a bigger level which I think the show is really showing is how you organize a revolution against capitalism as a whole and the harms capitalism has on the working class.
Also I dont think the point is necessary the labor that the Innies are doing. Something tells me the only thing Lumon cares about is control over its workforce and how to duplicate that
worldwide for other corporations seeing the party that Helly "crashes" at the end of the season. Its exactly like the conferences billionaires hold to advertise for stock holders to show off and sell a product. All the tasks and jobs that other departments do seem pointless. If I had to guess its probably just an experiment to see how they could control the entire workforce. Seeing that Marks Wife never leaves.
This ain’t related to the video but imagine the uses of severance on everyday jobs the effect on so many people not even office jobs just general jobs like fast food or retail
The whole Eigan family dynamic, etc. brings, to my mind, Mormonism.
Snow everywhere - what is the supposed location- Pennsylvania, Minnesota?
I will argue that The Last Jedi is the only movie of the three that at least tried
WOW! I didn't realize Zendaya was a Severance Fan!
What is the first song in this please? The trumpet is amazing.
Also, great video. Surprised you havent more subscribers yet!
Howdy! Video’s editor here. The song is Freudian Slip by Bladverk Band!
Hey, that's the name of the show! :)
"what are ghosts if not a repressed memory" spooky little guys its that easy
I thought they were in Pennsylvania since the addresses on Burts list say PE
thanks to my recomendation i found your channel, great video
I’m from Delaware. I feel like I work at lumen.
You've blown my mind with some of the stuff you said
This was great 🎉
yea background music was so loud & bad. so not Ghosts what you described split personality
I have no idea of what your video is about but I’ll watch it, in hopes that it is another critique to capitalism. . . Don’t let me down!
Really great video but why did you have to put weird music on top of it :(
Howdy Stanley! Video’s editor here. Thanks for watching and I’m very glad you liked it overall! I used mostly jazz in it because of the show’s iconic use of “defiant jazz” as a genre within the Severance universe. Other than that, I tried to match the emotional and conceptual weight being discussed to specific ~vibes~ in the music.
If you think it was a weird choice, then I’d advise you to watch our Barry video as well! Its bizarre!
Ya like Jazz, Stanley?
@@gznewman ya did good
Please try to enjoy all the music equally. You have been deducted 10 points. You have 90 points remaining.
Can't believe I've only just happened across this video! @bookendjam @gznewman: brilliantly done!
Subbed in hope of more in the future (especially with S2 finally upcoming Jan 17!). Thank you! 🙂
