What struck me most about the series was that I realized that the innies felt more alive than the outies and now I use it to see if I'm in outie or innie mode, it made me realize that I was living on automatic, it's ironic because they are locked up but they have the desire to break free while the others are the opposite.
In defence of the outtie's, it's a lot easier to focus on ourselves without all the distractions of the outside world. Think about how much of ourselves we give to our friends and family. Also, imagine the camaraderie you have with your coworkers cranked up to 11 since they are the ONLY folks you EVER interact with. They literally get to know everything about the "real" you. It makes sense that you guys would bond and maybe even love each other.
The eternal sunshine of Kafka. I really enjoyed this series & look forward to the next one. I also noticed that it didn’t really take much to knock Helly off her feet by rattling a door handle. I enjoyed it.
The forced romance… while I think it’s a fair complaint to say it could have been developed more or better, I also think it makes a lot of sense and that ‘forced’ is the wrong word. 1. We have to remember these innies are similar to children, at least in terms of their life experiences. As such, their behaviors may seem sporadic or illogical when compared to normal adults in their 30s. 2. One of the most natural ways for a strong connection to form is when two people take a big risk together. I don’t know all the psychology behind it, but being in risky situations naturally make us more vulnerable, and so it’s logical that Helly is hostile towards ‘company man’ Mark but then develops feelings for ‘leader of a rebellion’ Mark 3. Also the feelings are still developing. It wasn’t an ‘I love you and will love you forever’ kiss. It was more of a ‘I might never see you again and I might never even exist again and so it might be nice to experience a kiss with someone I kind of like before I die’ kiss But yes, the dynamics of their relationship are a liiiittle bit rushed/hurried when compared to Burt and Irv
He must of missed the seen where Dylan asks Helly about their “Mental Health Walk”. It should have been pretty clear where they were going with her and Mark after that scene. Also, given that we are drip fed information it’s a little naive to think that Ricken couldn’t be a “bad” guy.
i actually liked the first scene, the awkwardness of Helly makes sense, as you wouldn't really be fighting for your life when there is guy in a suit just trying his best to help you. It would be kinda awkward to throw something at him, makes it feel more real to me, at least.
Very true and I think the awkwardness was intentional on some level. Something about it just felt a little off to me I can’t really explain it haha and I feel like it sticks out in an otherwise perfect season
For me it's just the falling that's kinda weird, everything else is executed perfectly (especially when you see in the second episode what's going on behind the door)
I totally disagree with you about your criticisms. I love the opening scene and have watched it multiple times. It appeared to me that Helly fell partly because she is still a little groggy from the sedative from the surgery. Also, her demand to be let out is on point (exactly what I would’ve said). I also felt that the attraction between Mark and Helly was natural, if not inevitable. It seems Helly began to see him differently after he saved her in the elevator. Keep in mind that they each feared they might “die” from the OT contingency. So, this is her one chance at kissing someone (maybe ever) in her mind. The kiss made perfect sense to me. The whole group had grown closer in the preceding weeks. Keep in mind also that the last few episodes represented 3 weeks time.
The Helly Mark spark was there from first episode. And her comments like she is not interested in being his family is in character of her cutting through all bs and hitting mark where she knows it hurts him, and she says this as a revolt when he is being a bitch until he shows bravery.
Good point, it just felt a little forced to me and I thought that it didn’t really add much to the overall story. But I’m also fully ready to eat my words in season 2 because this show is so well written. Maybe they have a plan for it that I just don’t see yet
@@TheSci-FiCornerThe plan is quite obviously the conflict it will create between innie & outie Mark's love life. His outie loved Gemma so much that he underwent the procedure, but now his innie is falling in love with Helly due to their adventures. How will this be resolved, particularly if Mark is reintegrated? That's all interesting stuff to explore
I did not know the second season is not still out, I finished the finale of season one like two hours ago, and when I found out I have to wait one month, I felt like I will go crazy!!! How could you people wait two years??!! happy I didnt see it sooner!
I finished the show yesterday, it’s been a while since a show was able to hook me like this one did. I’m glad you drew the brief comparison between this and Mr.Robot, because the production and ambiance of this show heavily reminded me of that masterpiece. The wait for S2 ensues…
I would say that she fell tugging on the door because....brain surgery.... I mean, at the least you should be dizzy after getting something implanted in your head. Lol
Season 1 of Severance is the best damn season of TV along with Scavengers Reign that I've ever seen. Even the color correction is top tier in Severance, what a show!
I think when Mark went to the break room for Helly, or when he would play into her jokes, and he was always there after every incident.. we're very subtle ways they showed a budding romance. I also feel her kissing him was like giving him a favor, like in old times when a maiden would give her handkerchief. It was to spur him on into doing this really big scary thing which wasn't in him in the beginning, and the fact that they may never see each other again, which she was probably counting on.
Dude, great job with the content and editing! If you can, I’d recommend investing in a better microphone for some clearer audio quality, but other than that keep it up!
Thanks! Im also pretty sure you were my 100th sub. I have a Blue Yeti which is a pretty good mic I think but I’m just trying to tweak with the right settings to get it sounding better. Appreciate the kind words!
It's like The Office if the show was set in The Back Rooms and the world is controlled by Vladimir Lenin and his enforcer Lamont from Sanford and Son. "Five is available by request across your bottom lip, you big dummy. "
Not sure why you'd go spoiler-free on this one! My initial reaction to the show was, "Perfect, no notes!" Later, when comparing it to Breaking Bad, I found it short on character development, but I do expect loads more of that this season. There's just too much time spent on world-building and only 9 episodes. I do agree with your "nit-picks" as well, but I still could not be more excited for January 17th!
I agree that there wasn’t as much character development as I would have liked. But I also think it’s important to spend a lot of time world-building since there’s so many unique aspects of it. I think they have a good foundation for the characters now though and because we’ve established the world now, hopefully season 2 will bring a lot of meaningful development. Can’t wait for Jan. 17th!
Very cool analysis this show is not talked about enough! I slightly disagree with your point about M and H romance bc u said it yourself they are a bunch of teenagers and the real Helen just said innie H was not a person. what better way to assert yourself as a person than doing something forbidden out of your own free will? anyway that's how I interpreted it when I first saw it.
The wait has been painful and I only saw it first about a year ago. I feel sorry for anyone who watched it when it first came out.... a special kind of torture
We’ll see! I have a lot of faith in the writers and Erickson as a show runner, and I honestly don’t even need to it be as perfect as season 1. I just want a good continuation of the story that’s true to the themes and the characters
I think the opening scene was good. Yes, the locked door did seem to throw her down, which was weird. Maybe her knees or ankles, or shoe gave way and she stumbled and fell. I guess Helly and Mark's relationship seemed to spark up fast, but I guess you could say the same about Burt and Irving. Their child like nature, naïve and immature ways might account for this.
She'd just woken up, had very recently had a medical procedure that radically altered how her memory worked, and was deeply disoriented and upset. Who hasn't been knocked down by an inanimate object on a rough morning?
It’s a 9 out of 10 for me. The only complaint I have is I think we were kept a little too in the dark by the end of the season, in my opinion the show gave us too many questions rather than answers. I know the shows meant to be a mystery but I feel like we know the absolute minimum about lumon.
Interesting. I actually enjoy still being in the dark about most of what Lumon does. I personally feel like they revealed just enough to keep me wanting more but I can see how the lack of info would be frustrating to some people.
@ if the ep where they see the goats just went on for like 10 more minutes then all my problems would be solved. They find out something substantial and then they plan the escape.
Fair point. I do agree that there are a lot of unanswered questions and I think they need to answer a lot by the end of the next season or else it’ll feel too drawn out
It’s definitely the best show ever made. My only gripe is the “**** you Lumon” song. I’ve watched it 4 times now. I just wish there was a physical release on 4K Blu-ray.
Yeah the Lumon song was a little corny I’ll give you that but I think it was self-aware to some extent haha. Not sure if you know but they are actually releasing a Blu-Ray physical edition of s1 on Dec. 17th! Sadly, it’s not 4k though
The romantic connection with Helly was a bit forced and felt like the show setting up the tension of mark having to choose between his wife and Helly in later seasons.
Thanks! I’m so excited too, we’re so close. If you mean the music in my outro, it’s from one of favorite video games ever: Prey (2017). There’s a link to it in the description!
still think a kiss is not a relationship. They all leave with the thought of killing their inni and see each other last time ever. I really think an out of the odinary reaction isnt out of character or suprising i wouldnt be suprised myself if that could not even be something they mention in case they remember
I thought the cry in the car felt intentionally camp and a bit comical, I liked it. I don't know that I need his cry to be convincing, the performance of him grieving his wife altogether is convincing enough. Also Britt Lower's last name is pronounced Lauw • wur (like you're saying "loud" without the d) by the way and she's a great actor especially in these types of dramady roles. Check out her previous work, Man Seeking Woman is a good start.
It's interesting i quite liked the show but i really disagree that the finale was the best episode. I felt that the plot contrivances went a bit out of control.
Well made dude. I really liked the commentary and quality (except for the audio quality of the mic). Just a couple of considerations : 1. Who is this video for? For people who watched the series, like myself, might enjoy your commentary but don't care for spoilers. If it's for those who haven't watched it yet, you give away too much for my liking, despite avoiding spoilers. Also, get a better mic 👍
Appreciate the feedback! Yeah looking back on it I kinda tried to make it for people in both camps but in retrospect that’s kind of impossible to do haha. Also I’m using a Blue Yeti mic which is actually pretty good I think, just trying to find the right settings to get a better sound. In my newest video it’s a lot better I think. Thanks for the support! More stuff on the way soon.
@@TheSci-FiCorner A Yeti should definitely sound better than that, might just be an issue of the bitrate being too low. Check your control panel and make sure your sample rate is around 44Khz, and in your audio recorder just make sure the bitrate is at least 320kbps. Happy to help troubleshoot if needed!
I’ve heard about it, but have been debating reading it for a long time. I want to go into season 2 as blind as possible, but I’d read it if it doesn’t give away too much of the mystery of Lumon. Do you think it reveals too much?
Just realized I spent the whole video mispronouncing Britt Lower's name. My bad.
