    I was able to locate the bottom half of these new 'holders' but not the domed top halves. So I made my own by taking a soldering iron to disposable plastic water bottles (doubling up the thinner ones for strength): I cut off the top spouts then made slits in the sides for air circulation, THX Danni, for sharing your knowledge! We've made many Kokedama and were intrigued by this format as well. I've had 2 Phals & 1 Dendrobium living bare-root for almost 2 yrs, (and blooming right on schedule!!) but one Phal has developed limper/leathery leaves so I want more moisture to surround the roots w/o actually planting them. I also got the longer moss strands & they work so well. Japanese mounds are a perfect solution!

    I learnt from a book on Japanese method of growing neo that they put a log-shape charcoal in the centre to make the shape (or they make the hollow space in the centre and then remove the instrument). In any way, it helps ventilation. And the basket serves the same purpose. Nice video, Danny :)

    It was nice to hear that you have watched some of the South Korean orchid growers' videos and are trying what they do, since I came from that part of the world. In South Korea, they have very hot, humid summers (like tropical places) and very cold, dry winters (like Chicago or Moscow - as dry as Moscow in S. Korea). And they have some native populations of Neofinetia falcata on the extreme southern coasts (semi-subtropical, but still snowy, environments). So, I guess you might want to water your Neofinetia much less during the summer times in Cyprus, since Cyprus is hot and humid in the summer too. I am super interested to hear what you will be experiencing with your Neofinetia. Please please update us!! Stay well!

    The wick idea is brilliant. I have 5 neos which I grow in exactly the same set up - same plastic meshes and pots and they dry out completely within 1-2 days in the summer, it is quite dry and hot where I live. Thank you for the great idea, I will definitely use it! :)

    Great video. I have a neo kinkabutu. When I made my mound I found it easier to make the ball with the short sphag free hand. Then wrap with the 5 a sphag. After placing in the plastic neo pot carefully use your thumb to make hole up through the bottom of the pot. For watering I soak for 10 minutes in a bowl then gently put thumb in bottom hole and press out excess water. Hope you get your long sphag soon. Repotme has great moss.

    Just a note, Japanese growers do not keep and grow their Fuukiran permanently in the decorative pots, they only use them when the plants are being displayed for shows or events. Most times, the plants are grown in long terracotta pots or the plastic pots that you featured in your video.

    Nicely done 👍🏻 this is reminding me of an idea I had... Do you think that adapting this kind of setup to bigger orchids could allow to use full sphagnum moss with the ones that usually need more air? I'm thinking Cattleyas, wouldn't it be great to be able to use full sphagnum moss (or sphagnum and lecca for air pockets) to water them less frequently and yet provide enough air so roots wouldn't rot?
    This would mean very little damage when repotting compared to bark...
    Have you even seen or tried growing adult Cattleyas in medium mainly made of sphagnum moss?
    I know this highly depends on environment but I'm imagining quite standard conditions (warm to hot) in an apartment, non-tropical country

    • @joeperez7167
      @joeperez7167 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lc Cch it depends on the cattleya species/hybrid . I’ve had some that practically rot away just looking at moss while others seem to prefer it than bark. Likewise it works best if they’re still small / young but idk maybe you can get them used to it

    • @lccch4115
      @lccch4115 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeperez7167 well I wonder if it's possible to adapt them progressively... I know sophronitis are more into moisture but they also prefer cooler temperatures, I'm truly talking about big '' regular '' Cattleyas, especially the big famous monofoliates (Trianae, Mossiae, Labiata...) because I love em hahah (so far I have a recently purchased Trianae) and the ones that are easily found, but if they biologically truly need to dry out very fast because their environment generates that, I guess no strategy could change the nature of the plant 😒 I'd like to be able to leave for two weeks or even more and not have to worry about my plants' health
      And to not struggle with bark pieces when repotting
      I suppose life is made of compromises 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Hi I'm new to growing orchids and watering is a huge problem for me. I killed many orchids the place I live is pretty dry not a humid city or place. The summers can be bone dry with hot windy air sk basically like a desert and I've been reading that you have to water or dunk the orchid setup once a week but the cocopeat doesn't hold the water the next day and it dries it entirely I'm from southern India the plateau area not the coastal regions. So can you suggest me proper potting media and this wick method what you mentioned it seems pretty useful for me to water it or maintain the humidity. I keep my orchids in my balcony so I can't even use a humidifier. As per the sunlight I get bright Indirect light the only problem is with watering. So it would be really sweet if you suggest me with the watering and potting media. I am growing neofenetia and I'm kinda on the verge of killing it D: but this video really helped me thanks.

    Hey Danny, what’s up? I’m new to the orchid hobby and I have a small orchid colletion (7 orchids, two years) yet I’m devastated, I realized my babies have a bad infestation of orchid fleck virus. I’m using the oil mix to fight the mites but It’s too late, they’re infected.
    So I’d like to know what did you do to your orchids that were infected with orchid flecks virus from the 2016 video , p l e a s e I beg you please ;_; Did you discard them? Did they recover somehow? Thanks! 🙏🏼❤️

    • @makkachin9614
      @makkachin9614 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe she said that that the only think that can cure the virus is the orchid's immune system itself.
      So, the thing that you must do is care for the orchid's immune system. Provide enough light (not too much!) to the orchid, make sure that your orchid has great roots, provide enough water (+fertiliser in case your orchid has enough roots to be fertilised).
      Try your best at creating an ideal environment for the orchid so that it will be able to fight off the virus itself.
      You may cut very infected parts of the orchid away with a disinfected tool. Make sure that you cut in healthy tissue when cutting away infected parts to make sure that the infection won't spread.
      But only do this if there is a bad infection that you can see advancing!
      Good luck!♡

    Hurray! I have been able to find the neo pots and the mesh mounds in the United States at www.orchidweb.com/. They have 2.75 and 3 size neo pots and they have the mesh mounds that fit both but I got the larger size since he told me they would fit in the smaller one too and would give the mounding effect that we want. Initially, I placed an order for the pots and then in the order asked about the mesh pots and I just got a call from them. They have them but they aren't listed. The person who called said he would go ahead and put them up in the next few days--so check there in a few days or else email them and tell them that you heard they have them! I did mention Miss Orchid Girl's video Danny and so maybe mention that. I told him I was going to post it here for the people who can't find them. Yeah!
