Regarding "natural selection" - most of the orchids we buy have undergone artificial (i.e., human) selection, often over many generations. First, orchids were collected from the wild and transported - only some survived. Then the survivors are crossed - only those which made fertile seed continued their DNA forward. Then those seeds are sown with artificial methods (flasks, etc.) Only the seedlings that survive that make it to the compots. Then the plants that survive the compots in the growing environment (greenhouse) can be sold. Repeat for several generations. What we end up with are plants that are well adapted for human cultivation in human created environments. This is most evident in the commercial phals, but also commercial cymbidiums and hobbyist Cattleyas. Like with so many plants we grow (such as the "orange", a fruit whose origin is long lost in the vast history of horticulture), orchids for humans are a human creation. So yes, just taking a species from the wild and expecting it to grow easily in our care is often a formula for disaster. This is why some species are challenges for beginners - because they have not undergone many generations of human selection, and thus are not adapted to our environments.
I'm so happy that you are going to be doing some videos on Neofinetias. They are one variety of orchids that intrigue me. Looking forward to seeing more on this subject on your channel.
What a wonderful haul. I like going through the orchid hobby through you on your journey. You are wonderful and amazing passing on the tips and tricks that you have learned and still learning in growing orchids. Yes there are some differences between your place where you live and my place but through you I can still find which orchids will work and which will not. Thank you for your mentoring and I still love going through your older videos as there are still some tricks and tips there.
YESSS !! I see Neo I click in half a sec ahaha I am hooked on Neos since I smelled 2 of mine in bloom last summer !!! Never smelled anything better I think! The minimarus are so darn cute ^^ And speaking of nature, some people forget that there's a reason why most orchids have thousands of seeds, because in nature it's not all smooth and most of the seeds, if they sprout, will die sadly, only a few survive.
Oooohhhhh..... they are sooo cute! Thank you for sharing Danny! 6 months ago I didn’t have any orchids, and never thought I would either. When my neighbor passed away (an avid houseplant lady) her adult children gave me a few of her plants. Well one of them was a phal, (the other orchid has an above the dirt bulb and I haven’t figured it out yet)so I took to the internet to figure out how to care for it and found you! In 6 months I now own 7 orchids(Christmas time $1 clearance orchids got me! 😜) I am happy to say thanks to your help the orchid I received from my neighbor is getting ready to bloom!!! So thank you Danny! ❤️❤️❤️🌸🌸🌸
Ahaha, it's so cute seeing you get all excited about the (possible) flower-spikes! And your doves are comedic geniuses as always! I've always loved your videos (since 2016 I think), but they've gotten even better with your little birbs!
Lovely Neos - I'm very jealous! I only have one Neofinetia falcata, and would get more if not for the cost. I think you are right about cool-downs initiating flowers.. Mine has flowered consistently every spring for years - it sits in Cattleya light, and gets a chill on the windowsill during the winter. It takes a bit of a break at this time and stops growing for a bit, and when the root tips start growing again in the late winter, that's when it usually it starts to mature a flower spike for me. Sometimes the tip of the spike will show up MONTHS before, but does not elongate/grow until spring. Good luck with yours! Looking forward to updates.
SleepyCatGarden Thank you so much for the info on your noes, where they sit and how they perform. I have mine on the kitchen window and conditions like yours. First six months now, so will follow and see. Writing your info for my notes.
Very nice orchids! Good luck with them. Hope to see them in bloom soon. My Onami Seikai and Shutenno are growing soooooo sloooooooow,I think I will have grandchildren till they will bloom.
I love the video as I’m starting to build my Neofinetia collection and can’t get enough of the tutorials. Seems like there is much to learn. I have one neo falcata and 2 Neostilis Baby Angels on the way! They make me happy so I hope I can grow them!
Hey Danny beautiful haul 😍 Orchid Deluxe actually moved into a greenhouse in Germany last summer though very close to the Netherlands. The owners are super nice and the greenhouse is open for visitors on saturdays. Can only recommend it to people living in the area :)
I live in the same city as the owner, so when i make an order with them he brings the orchids to my house, he is very friendly, great service. I have a lot of neo's and Phals from them.
@@marjandijkkamp5243 Awesome! I live near the greenhouse so I just visit them and pick an orchid :) I also buy orchiata bark from them. I love walking around the greenhouse, admiring all the orchids and chatting to the owners :D
I absolutely love Neo's, have a few of them in my collection for few years already. What can I say?! If you want them to bloom, just forget that you have them 🙈. And by the way, flower spikes can start to grow very quickly, but blooming just for next season. They are doing this! Anyway, good good luck!
Really fun! I understand the Nishidimiyako will eventually morph into the Manazuru. Eventually, when the Nishi produces new fans, those new fans will be the Manazuru variety. The Manazuru's variegation pattern will be the reverse of the Nishi. There are other varieties that are only produced this way as well (hence the price). Good luck, those look really fun!
Nishidemiyako has the ability to produce a variety of different mutations, Manazuru being just one, these mutations can either have different types of longitudinal variegation but also shorter leaves and even leaves which are more upright for example the variety Ginsekai. If I am not mistaken, there are about 5 or 6 varieties that have mutated from Nishidemiyako.
great haul and very nice choices! I am hooked on neofinetias too and have same sedirea but variegated... I am blooming neos but struggling to bloom sedirea, will be following your neo journey.
I have a falcata, Lou Sneary, and Baby Angel. I find that the pure falcatas are more finicky than the hybrids (Im on my second falcata lol). I also just got my second japonica, my first one died from a dry LECA top layer. I think I'm going to grow my japonica in pure moss since I find it easier to control the moisture in moss than any other medium. * in regards to backcrossing, my Baby Angel looks like a larger falcata with pink tips on the sepals. The only rhynchostylis trait it shows is the root texture. but its an easy grower.
Hi Danny idk what happend to my phals, I placed them in rain and water got on the leaves I let them dry but the next day they had circular indents in the leaves where the water droplets were and they were newly formed leaves, do u think it's rot? Cuz the indents r mushy and it made a whole leaf limpy and mushy. I decided to cut the leaf into living tissue and placed cinnamon onto the wound what do u think?
Nigel Lau was it cold? I recently made half a leaf go limpy because I forgot I put a phal outside and it stayed there overnight when it was less than 40 degrees F. That’s too cold for an orchid! I know mushy spots can be a sign of cold damage sometimes.
Hi Danny, here's some info on sites to order Neos in the US: Jason Fisher from www.orchidweb.com; and Dr Kristen Uthus from www.newworldorchids.com. Jason also has an excellent TH-cam video on how to pot NEOS and the traditional Japanese Manor.
I just recently got a Lou Sneary, and some of the leaves have started to go a purple hue. Is this what you are having as well? Also how do you set up your Lou Sneary?
Today i got Neofinetia Falcata Murasakitaishi lets hope i can keep it alive i have two other orchids Bulbophyllum Lasiochilum and a Rhynchostylis Gigantea 😁
Hey Dani! I don't know if you do video requests, but I was curious what your opinion is on orchid viruses. I've had to discard several plants recently that came from sellers with virus, especially cattleyas, and it is discouraging to throw away money when viruses seem to be SO COMMON. I'd love to see a video discussion on orchid virus - just how concerned should we be when we suspect an orchid is infected, is it a reasonable expectations that we can keep a "clean" collection, what kind of etiquette should we follow when we receive plants from growers that are infected (is this something we should expect to some extent with large scale operations, or is there onus on producers to sell healthy plants?) Would love to hear your feedback! Thanks for the videos, I love them! Have been following and enjoying for years!

And sometimes, the same selection can make some orchids oddly difficult to grow for people who are good with other, more "demanding" orchids!

Oh these guys are so cute and small. I generally like being part of the journey too, so I get why you don't mind with these guys!
I just got a neo over the weekend! Im so excited to go on this journey with you Dani!
I use super chunky media for my vanda seedling and paraphalaenopsis seedling, airy and keep the moisture for them =)

Just ordered a Sedirea variety Daruma, I'll pick it up at the next orchid show, gotta love the little round, stubby leaves. 😃
i use osmocote on some of my plants. if you crush the pellet you can dilute them and sprinkle them evenly over the potting media..

@@twobluestripes well all my orchids are outside because it doesn't get as cold in Australia then US and they were fine.
That Nishidemiyako was a really good price. Benisuzume is generally a smaller variety.
The triple spur neos are my favorite!

Can you link to your go to fertilizer? I couldnt quite make out the brand you were saying. Thanks!

Do you reccomend reporting newly acquired Phalaenopsis??
How are they all doing now? Are they still in moss?
