My favourite story was when he met the queen at a royal variety performance where all the performers were told not to speak to her unless she spoke to them first. After shaking hands and her moving on he called her back - your majesty he said - yes mr cooper - do you like football he asked - not really she replied to which he asked "well can I have your cup final ticket"
Tommy also put his hand into the Duke of Edinburghs pocket and said to him “have a drink on me” later when the Duke checked his pocket he found a teabag 🤣

Tommy cooper was in the magic circle and used to make his tricks go wrong on purpose for comedy. He was an absolute genius

Any magician can do a magic trick right, but it takes something special to integrate comedy by purposefully getting it wrong
The first tommy cooper sketch I remember seeing was the one where he is teaching self defence. Loved it
I believe he discovered his formula by accident while performing magic tricks for the troops in the war. He messed up a trick and got so many laughs he decided to stick with it.

The funniest parts were when the trick looked like it had gone wrong, but was just misdirection for something more.
e.g. a trick he was dong with Michael Parkinson and a couple of red balls. It looked like it had gone wrong and he revealed he had more than one ball, but right at the end, a dozen or so appeared out of nowhere.
Tommy used to slip something into the jacket pocket of waiters/taxi drivers/hotel porters etc. and say have a drink on me. 'Thanks Mr Cooper' they'd say. When they looked later, it was a tea bag!

Tommy Cooper was a national treasure. He was one of those rare comedians who could simply stand on a stage, without saying a word, and have the audience in knots with laughter. We're still using his catch phrase "Jus' like that" and I cannot help but smile just thinking of him.
tommy was one of a kind , he died live on stage it was on tv , we all laughed thinking it was part of his act ! ..... he died to the sound of people laughing , he would have loved that . thank you tommy ! :)

You can’t say anything now without consequences, everyone is so sensitive now that they can’t even take jokes. In today’s world Tommy Cooper would probably be cancelled for wearing a fez, it will be seen as offensive to Indians and Pakistanis.

Tommy was the living embodiment of "funny bones".
Just clean, innocent, goofy fun and once in a while he produced an truly unexpected illusion. I saw him live on stage many years ago and I was in absolute stitches for the entire performance.
He was actually a highly skilled comedian and magician but pretended not to be and the delivery was perfect. A friend of mine seen him perform live in Manchester and he walked out on stage facing the wrong way, looked at the black backdrop and shouted, “I thought there would be more people turn up than this” and then walked straight back off the stage.
I saw him live on stage in Bolton back in the early 80's. He was an absolute riot. Started his act out of sight, off stage by mic for about 5 minutes. He had a tiny white garden gate in front of his table, for no apparent reason but would walk through it at random times in connection with his routine. Never laughed so much for so long but couldn't actually remembet what he did. Incredible, just a natural comic. Shame we've lost that innocence.

His whole career was based on him being the worst. He was originally a serious entertainer.
One day his act went to pieces. Magic tricks didn't work properly etc. When he saw the reaction of how hilarious the audience found it, he realised he was onto something.
And thus the terrible performer was born.

In my opinion Tommy was the king of telling a bad joke. He made everyone laugh. I love the one where he changes disguises whilst telling a story

Tommy Cooper came from a golden age of British comedy. In the 60's, 70s and early 80s we had plenty of classic sitcoms, plenty of classic comedy sketch shows and great comedy double acts regularly on TV. Sadly, a bygone age now.

I was lucky enough to see him live. In my opinion, Tommy Cooper was the funniest man who ever lived. He made you laugh before the stage lights came on. Einstein of Comedy without a doubt.
He was a comedy genius and certainly his delivery of basic humour was skillfully done. The fact that the audience was laughing just as he was about to do something sums up his act.
He was a member of the Magic Circle. You had to be a very gifted magician to be invited to join. The gift he had undoing magic tricks and then proving the trick successful is the genius of Tommy Cooper. Glued to the screen I was as a kid.
@Marie Whitbread There's sadly very little footage of him doing magic tricks properly, but his close-up stuff was brilliant to watch. After all these years he's still incredibly funny!

I remember being allowed to watch Tommy Cooper as a kid late 70's early 80's as it was harmless goofy fun without anything crude. I also remember the awful moment on stage when he collapsed and we all thought it was part of the act until the curtain was drawn.😢
even his passing was a moment of fun, i remember well watching the royal variety show live when he was mid act and suffered a massive coronary while the audience laughed and applauded, i have no doubt that is the way he wanted to end, leaving us laughing as he went. quality performer 😉

It wasn't a Royal Variety Show. It was a show called 'Live From Her Majesty's', the name derived from the theatre from which it was broadcast. A sad moment.

@@s4ss1n No apology needed. Yes, it was quite a while ago now and those type of variety shows were more common/popular back then. I never usually watched them but when I saw he was appearing switched on to see him little knowing it would be his last performance.
Tommy was a legend, grew up watching him with all the family, when family entertainment meant that the whole family sat and watched together
I'm another who was lucky enough to see him live back in the 70's...he's up there among my comedy heroes with Milligan & Sellers....a real comic genius
His ''spoon jar-jar spoon'' routine had me and my children in stitches , he was such a star.
Dave Allen was another comic genius, his sketch with the two funeral hearse's racing back to the graveyard with only one burial plot left, superb 😂🇬🇧🇺🇸

Tommy Cooper the only comedian who could get the audience rolling in the aisle, just by walking on the stage. Badly missed. I could watch his routines over and over again and laughter like it’s the first time I’ve seen them and knowing the punch line. RIP Tommy.
Tommy Cooper was absolutely brilliant. If you were ever lucky enough to be in the audience of one of his shows, that will always be a stand out memory.
I loved his short jokes:-
"I was reading this book today, The History of Glue." "Couldn't put it down."
"I went out to buy a pair of camouflage trousers." "Couldn't find any!"
This Cowboy walked into a German car dealer and says "Audi!"
He was a comedic genius. Sadly missed.
His greatest performance was never seen on tv. He stood up to give an after dinner speech. But people were laughing so much he never started. Eventually he sat down to thunderous applause. The greatest ever achievement by a comedian
I saw him stand up to give a speech at a celebrity dinner; he just stood, looked around for a few minutes and had the whole place in fits of laughter.
That was Tommy... He was just one of those naturally hilarious people. I remember hearing a story once about him stopping traffic on a busy high street simply while out Christmas shopping. He was minding his own business, but even the sight of him just walking in and out of shops had drivers pulled up on the kerb in fits of laughter.
There's his famous one at Prince Phillip's 60th birthday where he says "I am very honoured to be giving the speech at Prince Phillip's 60th birthday. When I was writing my speech I asked is there anything I should avoid saying, They said no, but don't call him by name or mention his age"

He also did this silent routine on stage. It was truly painfully side splitting. Audiences almost begged him to start speaking to break the hilarious silent energy

Tommy’s presence on stage was immeasurably powerful. Unequalled.
I remember going to see Tommy when I was about 20. (So 30+ years ago( He had us all in hysterics 10 minutes before he even came on stage. MIC ON and just hilarious comments from backstage. His death on stage where the audience just didn't know goes to show how much you could never predict what he would do. As a member of The Magic Circle (magicians) all interviews I've seen say its harder to do the trick wrong than right, His act often did the tricks wrong. TOTAL GENIUS
Tommy had some great one-liners such as, "I went out to buy some camouflage trousers today, but I couldn't find any."
He was such a genius. He died when I was 10 so I mostly have seen repeats of his shows but I love it and I love watching and hearing you enjoy it too. Thank you!

We used to watch him at home. My mother couldn't understand it - she always wondered why he laughed with his own jokes - But my dad and my brothers almost died laughing when TC was on. His timing, his posture, his delivery.
Tommy Cooper: I took my dog to the vet's. The vet picked him up and said, "Sorry, I'll have to put him down.
"Is it that bad?"
"No, he's just really heavy."

I think this was a great choice. His death is something that everyone on the internet has already checked. It’s unfair to the memory of a first class comedy genius. Outside his time, yet within it. This is a fantastic reaction and what he lived for. This reaction alone is all he’d have loved. Thank you.

I've not sought it out, and have no intention of doing so. Tommy Cooper kept me laughing for over half of my life. That's enough for me.
He was brilliant. There were times when he would do nothing, and the audience would be in stitches. In fact one time he was announced and didn't come on stage, and we laughed. He could make you laugh by not even being there.
Unfortunately that's why no one took it seriously when he died on live TV in front of an audience, because it was something he would have done as an act. RIP TC

My uncle used to be a cab driver in London back in the 70's. One day he picked up Tommy Cooper. As tradition goes at the end of the journey you wait for you're tip. Tommy said to him "Have a drink on me" and stuck a tea bag in his top pocket.
As a kid I didn't get Tommy Cooper ,I didn't realise what he was doing was comedy,now as an adult i say the man was an absolute genius.
I'm so glad you find Tommy Cooper so funny. His humour was very much of the moment, you couldn't repeat all of his jokes because only a tall man wearing a fez pretending to be confused all the time could deliver them. However, I'll try this Tommy Cooper joke: two men walk out of a nightclub, one says to the other "call me a cab". The other days "OK, you're a cab".😂😂😂😂😂
Watch his “Glass, Bottle” trick. The guy was 6ft 2 and always had that uncoordinated “Help Me’ look about him. The only man i know who could tell terrible jokes and make them ridiculously funny! A comedy God!! I only have to pick his DVD up to put a smile on my face. The DVD rarely gets as far as the actual player!!
His height, he was at least 6'5, seemed to help! He was seen as a big bumbling clown, his timing was spot on! His act, silly- goofy was reminiscent of grandad telling grandson a bedtime story! He quickly became a legend because it was realised how talented he was, deliberately getting it wrong for laughs! He achieved the level of, it didn't matter what he did- it got a laugh!
I remember seeing the duck on the Reoair Shop a lady took it in to be repaired.Tommy was just a silly clown loved by all.
My dad used to love Tommy Cooper. Apparently it's more difficult to do the magic tricks the wrong way than the right way. 👍

He was so funny and being part of the magic circle was a very good magician without the slapstick comedy. My old nana laughed just looking at him on TV before he even said anything. I had the pleasure of seeing him in the very early 80s around 81 i think at the Empire theatre in sunderland as a child all I can really remember was the adults just roaring In laughter
Rest in peace Tommy. During his final show, he suffered a heart attack on stage, and due to the nature of his comedy, the audience thought it was part of the act, and the stage crew thought he was adlibbing so didn't come to his assistance until it was too late. Heart of gold, gentle giant, a true gentleman, and one of the best entertainers of his time.

Absolute legend, this is the kind of comedy that I grew up with in the 70's, I don't think it can be recreated sadly as the performers of Tommy Cooper's calibre are just not there anymore. Have a look at The Plank with Tommy Cooper and Eric Sykes in it, absolutely hilarious but with very little dialogue but plenty of visual laughs 😅🤣
Tommy was a true comedy legend and whatever you do, even though you already said that you won't watch it, avoid the video of his death.
I was watching a video of comedy legends and that particular scene was in the video, it is horrific and utterly heartbreaking. Thankfully the video no longer exists.
He was just plain funny. He'd walk on stage & people would start laughing. He'd grin & look around & say "what" with an uncertain grin on his face, pretending not to know, but both he & his audience knew, even though neither knew why. His whole persona was just off-centre & he'd always surprise you. One of a kind; as you say, a kind they don't make any more.

Tommy cooper comedy is from another century and his delivery is classic and timeless. All of the comedians of history and time came through in his performances.
Humor now seems to have to be nasty instead of just fun. We need to get the fun back.
Even today there are different types of humour, and only a fraction of them are nasty.

He was in a cab once and when he was getting out, he reaches in his pocket pulling something out, he made sure to rustle it so it sounded like a note (money) he slipped it into the drivers shirt pocket and said "have a drink on me" when the driver took it out it was a tea bag 🤣🤣🤣
still remember the night he died the audience including my family watching at home thought it was part of his act, i like to think he would have enjoyed that last laugh
He was Britain's top comedian when I was a child. Greatly loved and missed.
When I was a lot younger I only liked around half of his stuff, I now find almost all of it hilarious :)
Tommy appeared in short film with a number of other comedians, watch "The Plank"
I only heard of The Plank for the first time about 2 years ago, I was visiting my parents and we found it by chance on TV late one night, watched the whole thing, absolutely brilliant.
@@bobblebardsley The Bargee was another good one. Eric Sykes(the plank) did not have bad eyesight there was no glass in his glasses they were actually a hearing aid.
My Grandad introduced me to 'The Plank" many years ago, wonderful comedy. :)

'The Plank' is more a history lesson now! All those empty roads, good old-fashioned British-made cars, and such a lack of people. It just all felt so much cleaner back then.

The very greatest comedians set up a tension, and Cooper did that in spades, wondering where the heck he was going, not wanting to miss anything he was saying. His puerile jokes made you fall over with laughter, his 'failed' magic tricks, just the look on his face the same. He was a master. Bless him.
He was an amazing magician too, I actually remember as a child watch him die on stage, was a very sad moment of my life, watch the goons too EB, they were super funny

Yes remember watching this moment as a child. It cut quickly to the adverts, and my dad just said, "something's wrong"
I was laughing my arse off, especially when the curtains closed & his feet were still sticking out, then they disappeared as he was dragged backstage. It's weird because he used to clutch his heart a lot during his shows, like he did in this video, so it didn't seem out of place, but we soon figured out it wasn't part of the act. A sad loss to comedy, RIP Tommy.

Sadly ironic that he kept touching his chest to feign shock. Poor guy died of a heart attack on stage. Comedy used to be family viewing. Morecambe and Wise were a similar duo. Today's comedy acts need an 18 rating. Have you reacted to Rod Hull and Emu yet? Especially the one where they were being interviewed by Parkinson. That's absolutely hilarious.

I was watching, that Sunday night when Tommy died, live onstage at the Palladium. It was horrific. He was such an amazing character. Before he went on stage, he would have already consumed between 10 - 15 pints of beer! Despite his magic tricks going 'wrong' - he was in fact, a master magician. A complex, gentle soul, a huge fella but adored by kids and all who knew him. Much missed. By the way, Sir Anthony Hopkins does an amazing impersonation though to be honest, any Brit growing up in the 70s does an impression of Tommy!
Around 20 years ago, I was travelling through Heathrow with an American colleague called Tom Cooper, who'd been visiting the UK and Holland on business with no idea that he had a British comedy namesake. My colleague was busy shopping when the last call went out for our flight to Boston. He was called by name using the Terminal public address system...."would Thomas Cooper please report to Gate 63 immediately, this is a last call for passenger Tom Cooper..." - the whole place was in uproar, simply the mention of his name (20 years after his passing!) was enough to put a smile on everyone's face and fill the place with laughter.
Tommy Cooper was essential family viewing in the 70s. Unique, genius and for everyone.
