I was only 8, I used to lie on the floor quite close to the set, I turned to my parents with a face like "Is that it?" because it's a weird way to end to an act, I remember my father saying he was suspicious that was not supposed to happen, but the audience laughed when his legs disappeared under the curtain and the show continued as if nothing happened. At a Royal Command performance he was in the line up to meet the Queen, when they were introduced he asked the Queen if he could ask a personal question, the rest of the line up held their breath and she said as personal as I will allow, he asked "Do you like football", she answered "not particularly" he responded by asking for her cup final tickets, a match she would attend as the monarch.

A friend of my dad's saw him live and Tommy spent the first 15 minutes pretending he was locked in the dressing room and, when he got out, couldn't find the stage. By the time he actually appeared in front of the audience, it was 15 minutes later and everyone was crying with laughter.

Been meaning to post on here in ages, love the stuff you do. By far the best reaction channel on TH-cam. Always wondered what Americans thought of UK comedy etc prior to the days of TH-cam because very few of our shows made it over there. Channels like this give me that insight :)

Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s you were surrounded by comic genius in all forms, but Tommy Cooper just had to appear! Actually he was a paid-up member of The Magic Circle, so was a proper magician. Thing is he worked out that making people laugh was more fun.

I had the immense pleasure of growing up watching Tommy on a Saturday night, doing this kinda stuff, unfortunately some of your American buddies didn't get the joke,! They said that he was a magician who's tricks failed 😳 I so glad you have seen the brilliance of the man. Dare I say a British sence of humour,👍 Tommy put a smile on our faces and kept it their for as long as he wanted, he passed away with his boots on, as they say, he collapsed and died in the middle of one of his shows, the audience though it was part of his act and laughed heartily, somehow I think Tommy wouldn't have wanted it any other way! 😁

My Mam went to see him live with some friends once. She actually wasn't really a fan but went along for a girls night out. She said it was the funniest show she had ever seem. He did a thing where he pretended to be stuck in the dressing room with his mike on. He didn't get on stage for 20 mins or so and by the time he got on stage everyone was on the floor unable to breathe. He had barely said a few sentences in all that time and none of them were one liners just him stuck in his dressing room. :)

You said it, we just don't get good clean comedy anymore. Tommy had some great 'one liners' like, 'My teeth itch!' & 'I'm good to my wife, I never go home'. Always good to watch.

He was in a market in the Middle East once and saw a stall selling Fezzes (I forget where so, depending on where he was, it might have been selling Tarbooshes which are very similar). He stopped to look and the proprietor waved his hands as if performing a magic trick and said, "Just like that!" in the time honoured fashion of anyone and everyone who does a Tommy Cooper impression no matter how good or bad. This surprised Cooper who hadn't expected to be recognized but it emerged that the stall owner didn't know him from Adam- it was just that every British tourist who saw his wares would put on a fez then do that.

He would sign autographs with his own pen, then give the pen and book back. The pen had printed on it the words "This pen was stolen from Tommy Cooper. " I had one that he gave to me but lost it years ago. He was a genuinely nice man.

EB,never have I heard someone sum up the legend Tommy Cooper perfectly like you 'goofy and affable' spot on funny and friendly no offensive material just damn silly and at times unbelievably skilled with his magic tricks, you cannot please everyone all of the time but I defy anyone not to crack at least a smile. My favourite of his was when people started laughing he would say ' what's happened?has somebody else come on' would love to see more. Thanks EB, RIP Tommy Cooper🙏♥️
