Spent years inspecting and fixing these in my former job, First, let's check the clicking solenoid problem systematically: For immediate fixes: Give the starter motor a solid whack with a hammer while someone tries to start it Check battery terminals and earth straps Test all fuses, especially the main ones Check the earth return at the rear light cluster near the tailgate (common fault point if someone's used it as a step) Test battery output under load even if it appears fine Key points often overlooked: Use glow plugs correctly - don't rush this step you cant just jump in and turn it over even on a hot summers day. Battery box needs proper clamps for safety, the vibrations without a clamp wears away the terminals, also major safety point, there should be gas out tube in the battery bay, fixed to the top of the battery, to outside the vehicle, on the off side in the middle panel. Wait 15 minutes between start attempts (the capacitor charges slowly) If you've got a KN cone filter, a spray of hairspray or fly repellent on the cone can help it catch The rear light earth return is particularly sneaky - it can cause all sorts of electrical gremlins and is often missed. Poor earthing here can affect the whole system. Remember this is a process of elimination. Don't rush your start attempts - that 15-minute wait between tries is crucial to let the capacitor charge properly. These Defenders are reliable workhorses once you sort the electrical niggles.
@@Rockhopper1 Hey thank you so much for this detailed comment and advice. It is so greatly appreciated, all duly noted and I will investigate with more confidence now ahead of the next video. Did you say it was an engine swap? 1990 on a G so every chance it’s not a defender at all despite the numerous stickers on it. It would have been a Land Rover 110, the defender name didn’t come out until the 200 Tdi engine was fitted as standard.
Hey, thanks for watching. Yes, I think you are right, but I've been told if you put 10 Defender stickers in numerous places, then it qualifies, lol. It's a mix and match of all sorts of parts, so it will be fun to unpick!
Dude, I’m so glad you’ve bought a Land Rover, it’ll certainly help improve your mechanical knowledge, Land Rover have been turning drivers into mechanics since 1948, that’s probably 40 years ago with your maths…seriously though, best of luck, I’ll be watching to offer my well tested experience with these machines !
Thank you so much 😃. I totally agree, I’m really looking forward to working on the engine and taking things apart down under. Any help and advice along the way will be very much appreciated mechanically or mathematically 😜. Thanks so much for watching and supporting 💪.
I hope someone has told you that the part you reworking on looks like the Alternator. Find out where your starter motor is and start again by removing the motor checking the pinion is free, apply a smear of oil not to much. Also check see if its got all its teeth on fly wheel and pinion, watch your fingers don't get trapped . reassemble and try starting with jump Leeds. Good luck.
Whilst trying to start it make sure you heat the glow plugs up for about 10 seconds first,on my old defender you have to hold the key in between the ignition on and the start position if that makes sense, you should see the orange glow plug symbol on the dash, and your battery definitely sounds weak
That is a great shout, however after further investigation my glow plugs wire isn't connected to anything 😂. They must have skipped that part in the engine swop lol. I'll add that job to the list. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, Legend 💪
@@InDadsGarage Even when it's this cold I barely need glow plugs and other times of the year not at all, the 200 Tdi is a very eager to start engine. One turn of the starter and it fires right up, although it does help I just had the starter replaced.
I’ve always loved the pickup style but I know full well that the double cabs don’t leave much room for stuff in the back! How are your seats? I recently picked one up myself and the seats are pretty “snug”. Great watch 💪🏻 thanks for sharing.
Hey thanks for watching, it's kind of best of both worlds I guess. I have bench seats in the back, no seat belts. To be honest I am probably going to strip everything out of it and do something quirky in the back (future videos). Essentially I will have a two seat, none practical sports tractor lol.
We've owned a 2008 Defender for a few years now - they always look awesome - the baddest vehicles on the road - but yes if neglected they do need (a lot) more work than the average vehicle of the same age (if only Land Rover had invested more to ironing out the niggling details we love!). if you have the cash, I can highly recommend the proper workshop manual and the parts book from paddock spares. they are about 50 quid each. If that's too spendy, a Haynes manual will keep you right. When you do the chassis swap, i'd get new bolts for all the suspension, they aren't dear, and will save a shed load of time (that's where the parts book comes in handy) The rear A frame ball joint is a bear to press out of its carrier, 10 tonne press required (minimum) or replace it with a new ball joint and carrier. Use decent ball joints like lemforder. Anything in a blue box won't last long! Check prices on parts. Some 'upgraded parts' are cheaper than standard. galvanised suspension turrets used to be cheaper than the black painted ones, for example. The engine looks like a 200tdi from a discovery. The front timing case is different to the defender, and because of this the water pump and viscous fan are in a different position. I'd fit an electric fan instead of the viscous one. Car builder solutions and rally design are both great companies to get stuff from such as an electric fan and controller. Land rover wiring can be a headache. It's usually corrosion in connectors that causes issues. I think Car builder solutions sell the correct tool for crimping Lucas bullet connectors. Note.. Most of the wires have a male connector, to make it female, there are insulated tubes that clip on to the male bullet. Battery box.. I fitted an aluminium one, and it was very flexible (2x batteries inside). Steel might be a better choice. Best of luck !
Hey man, thank you so much for taking the time to share all this kind of knowledge with me, this is amazing advice and all 100% noted 😃. Hey thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes definitely need a new chassis. I’ll check them out, so many different options so grateful of recommendations 🙌😃
Check your battery voltage while cranking. If it’s below 10 volts, the battery bad. Also the starter motor is down by the flywheel. You kept showing the alternator in the video. Good luck!

I have been looking at these and their chassis. Lots of controversy about them being stainless steel and cracking overtime, however I still look they look like a good option.......queue comments. lol Thanks s much for watching 😃
And. Could be bad earth's plus as others have said...battery. there is a big earth from battery to gearbox and chassis. Starter is behind exhaust downpipe....more fun. I have just rebuilt a 200 90 and looking at yours is reinforcing my wish not to build another!
Yes it turns out it is a disco 200 swop so that makes sense now. I’ll probably leave the fan off and look into an electric fan in the future if needed. I think you are right, I am not sure it's even the right battery. New one on order for the next video., let's see if that does the trick. Thanks so much for watching
Sounds like the battery is goosed because it hasn't got enough power to turn the engine over, the clicking noise you can hear is the solenoid on top of the starter motor it can't engage the fly wheel to turn the engine over due to lack of power from the battery. I had a good laugh when you were convinced that the alternator was the starter motor, looking forward to more episodes.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. Got a new battery on order for the next video and going to look into the starter motor solenoid (aka the alternating) some more too. Haha funny thing is I knew it was the alternator all along, but because I knew there was also an issue with the battery going flat I think I just got mentally overwhelmed with issues and couldn’t think straight 😂. We got there in the end.
@@InDadsGarage sound man.. ive just subbed to see the build.. I rebuild land cruisers and interested how the other side looks.. best of luck with the new chassis the body doesn't look too bad.. all the best with the project 🙂

It makes you wonder what was going through their head when they made these. OK, so they will be used off-road mainly in muddy English weather. Let's make the underside out of untreated and unprotected mild steel. What could go wrong eh, it'll last forever.

That is also my thinking, new battery on order 👌. Always handy to have a spare for the Landy anyway … right 😃.
I was just about to say, is the battery big enough?
Definitely not enough juice
Spent years inspecting and fixing these in my former job, First, let's check the clicking solenoid problem systematically:
For immediate fixes:
Give the starter motor a solid whack with a hammer while someone tries to start it
Check battery terminals and earth straps

Test battery output under load even if it appears fine

Thats dude, she need a lot of work but rather a lot of work from a rock bottom price than a lot of work from an average Defender price tag. thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel and build 😃
Pretty rare body With the crew cab ?
I’ve just bought a 1990 Landcruiser 60 series in Sweden 😅 what’s wrong with me 😂
Dude, what’s a beast that will be. If it’s coming from Sweden it definitely won’t have any rust in from extremely hot, none snowy climate😂. Did you buy it on eBay in the early hours of the morning?
@@InDadsGarage it’s been chassis upwards restored in 2017 and only done a confirmed 220,000 kilometres, however it’s got a few bubbles of rust appearing that I’ll get sorted, she’s a big old girl, slow as f*** but I’m looking into a turbo kit to give it a bit more ooomph. I’ve subscribed so I’ll keep an eye on your build, good luck 🤞
Get yourself a high capacity power bank too... It will come handy
15:47 not enough cold crank amperage in the battery. your starter is fine
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Got a new battery on order for the next video so hopefully that will do the trick 👌
Butcher is the suitable name for this lovely creation 😂.. Good luck
Haha what about Pat Butcher..... We might be onto something here! Awesome suggestion dude, thanks for leaving a comment 😎👌
Some of these older Landies have 2 batteries, not sure if yours should or not
Hey thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. That's. a good shout, I'll have to look into the battery and check its got the right juice needed for this old girl. 😀
Welcome to the Land Rover club. Get some practice in fixing them I have some jobs for you ❤😂😂
@@qball7291 yours Land Rover might be abit modern for me dude. Mine is a 1990 so almost 25 years old 😜
You’ll be needed John Craddocks landrover specialist
Staffordshire
I think I might need him on speed dial lol Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. 💪
Your battery doesn’t have enough grunt run jumper cables from your other car it will start
I think the battery is past it, so going to look into a new one for the next video, watch this space. Thanks so much for watching 😃
First step on any job is to add oil. Even if you're just replacing the battery....
This will be some project mate, good luck!
Hey man thanks for watching and supporting 💪. Big engine overhaul video is on the card soon. Fresh everything lol I’m really looking forward to getting my hands dirty for you guys 🤓
If you're in the north east join the north east 4x4 club always doing legal off-road days
It might be a little while before she's ready for any off roading but that sounds like a great idea. Are you a member?
In Bradford you could get mot with no advisories with that.
😂
Send it to Mahker, probably cost a few quid but it woukd at least be an enjoyable vehicle when finished.
Mahker Shamker....it's at InDadsGarage now mate, is gonna be amazing by the time I'm finished with it lol. Thanks so much for watching and supporting 😃👌
If the chassis is rotten don't waste your time and money prolonging the inevitable, get a galvanised chassis now , they are not going to be cheaper in the future
Thanks for the advice, I think you are 100% right. A new chassis is on the cards. Do you have any advice or recommendations? Thanks so much for watching
Please, take the actual startermotor apart and sand the contact points. And put a volt meter on that battery while cranking so you know it’s not bad.
Hey thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I will check out the starter-motor next as something definitely isn't right there. I also think the battery is too small! New one on order for the next video 👌
It's not leaking, it's sweating power!
Haha love it! 🤣
Does it have any fuel in it?
Hey thanks for your comment, yes, she has some fuel in it,. Assuming the fuel gauge works lol
I think the battery isn't powerful enough. I had the same issue on my Defender. Have fun !
it sounded more like the battery isn't up to the job you need at least a 90Ah 800cca battery
Sounds like the battery is weak and on the way out. Get a new one specifically for this model.
Will be following your build.
Defo need a new battery, I am not sure it's even the right one, like you said. Thanks so much for watching and supporting. Legend 💪
Battery is flat buddy, thats the starter clicking due to low voltage
Hey thanks for watching a leaving a comment. I think you are right, I have ordered a new bigger battery ready for the next video to see if we can get this old girl started.
No doubt you need a new chassis check out MAER galvanised chassis they are super well made and very competitive on price. Good luck👍
Good luck!
Hey thanks for that, good thinking. I know, lol I my head I knew it was the alternator but in the moment I was taking and thinking starter motor. I think it was because I knew I might have had an issue with the alternator too. Thanks so much for watching. Please keep the comments and advice coming, I’ll need it for sure! 🙌
i look forward to your next video
Thank you so much for your kind support 🙌😃
Best thing in this video…
Don’t take yourself toooooo serious ❤😂😢
That the engine bay is covered in oil … is a additional extra 😊
Haha how could I have missed the one, there are just so many 😂. Thank you so much for watching 🙌
Literally just done the same as u bought a 110 with a 90 cab on it not many like that
Mines called laa laa the landy
Sing to the baa baa black sheep song
Laa laa the landy wll you ever run
Haha that is brilliant, I love it 😂. Yeah it's a little bit different, I hope yours needs less work than mine though lol. Any tips along the way kindly welcome 😃. Thank you so much for the support.
no, that's the water pump or is it the power steering pump? Doh!
It’s definitely something lol 😂
some take the fan of so the heater warms up faster.
Ahhh I see, that makes sense. I think I'll leave it off and worry about an electric fan at some point in the future if needed. I guess it probably also helps with power on these engines too. Thanks so much for watching, please keep the comments and knowledge coming, I'm gonna need it 🤣
New Stainless steel bulkhead from Maer. If you start welding that old one you will be welding it for ever more.
I have been looking at these and their chassis. Lots of controversy about them being stainless steel and cracking overtime, however I still look they look like a good option.......queue comments. lol Thanks s much for watching 😃
Key turn is normal way around in a 90/ 110
You obviously found out the starter is on the side of the gear box by now 😉
Oh yeah.... I know my way around these puppies like the back of my hand!! .....Obviously!
Call it Tea bag, not only because of the holes but the tea you will be drinking.
Haha that's not a bad shout, it's also similar to my other hobby!
Maer chassis heavy duty from I think Poland
I’ve been looking at these. They seem more reasonably priced for the quality.
That's a 200 Tdi from a Discovery and the offside wing is from a 300 Tdi.
I actually don’t think a single part of it is NOT from a different model 😂
Serious question Have you done a land rover before???
First time working on a Land Rover, I'm usually an Audi man. I assume it's going to be very similar 😜. Thanks so much for watching
It looks like a discovery 200 engine so the fan won't fit.
Thank you so much for the advice, I’m going to fully look into the starter motor, earth and battery in the next video so this is all very helpful 😃. Haha I hope watching this series doesn’t give you too much PTSD 😂. Thanks so much for watching
If coolant is sweet it’s got antifreeze in 👍
That's my favorite type of coolant lol, couldn't have more than 2 pints of it though 🤣
Bit jealous when i saw it roll off the transporter.....but that didn't last long...bur at least we know what you will be doing for the next few months.
Haha, So you are telling me it looks just as sh*t on camera as it does in the flesh.....Bugger 😳. Lol fortunately my wife can't for me to spend all my time in the garage on an evening and weekend. Lots more content to come soon, thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment dude 😃
@InDadsGarage it will be great when it's done....but are Landies ever done, I'm not sure.
Only when its time to sell them lol
Ed China does a nifty line in chassis renovation😂😢
Funnily enough, I saw that pop up on my YT feed recently. I'll have to check it out, haha. I'm not sure mine can be saved, though 🤣. Thanks so much for watching.
Absolutely first job is take the spare wheel off the bonnet to save a work out every time you open it
Great suggestion, it might also save me from getting chopped in half if the optional extra 3x2 bonnet support fails. I understand it's a common problem lol. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 😀
get in touch with yrm they are local too us they do all the bits and bobs your gonna need ,judging by your accent your in the northeast
Hey thanks so much for the comment, Yes I believe the YRM boys in County Durham are the main men when it comes to replacement parts. I'll definitely get them on speed dial soon 🤓 👌
@InDadsGarage no probs we're abouta u at couldn't place the twang was thinking the borough area or Stockton
North East originally but North West now, I decided to keep the accent though, init. 😜
@InDadsGarage pmsl
i saw this for sale and i had sick in my mouth when i seen it ,what is it suppossed to be
It's only the cheapest Land Rover Defender on the Internet lol a complete Frankenstein's Monster of a Defender
@InDadsGarage I can see why
battery sounds knackered
Call it IT because that is what it is!
Aww don’t be mean lol if it was a dog it definitely would be from a rescue home 😂
@@InDadsGarage sound man.. ive just subbed to see the build.. I rebuild land cruisers and interested how the other side looks.. best of luck with the new chassis the body doesn't look too bad.. all the best with the project 🙂
Thanks for your support dude, hope you enjoy the upcoming videos. Still can’t go wrong with a Land Cruiser 😎👌
Maximus Rover ( for the name)
Like it! not sure there is anything Maximus about it at the moment, more Shitamus but there is time yet 🤣. Thanks so much for watching dude 🤓
She's been on Norfolk
Pizza beach
Haha ahh well that explains it 😂
Oh dear. Good luck.
Haha, I love your confidence 😂 thanks so much for watching 💪
There is nothing there worth keeping.
It’s a new chassis body off and replace everything.
I think you might be right there. I’m not worried though, I’m sure all the bolts holding all the parts on will come off dead easy, so shouldn’t be too difficult 😜. Thank you so much for watching
Ps. Its a knackered battery.
Agreed, new battery on order for next video 💪
@@InDadsGarage top man....Go large as the toys that you can bolt on are endless. I did the very same in lockdown. Bought a nail and now it's a beast.
It makes you wonder what was going through their head when they made these.
OK, so they will be used off-road mainly in muddy English weather. Let's make the underside out of untreated and unprotected mild steel. What could go wrong eh, it'll last forever.
I don't think they ever expected them to last so long, any other car like this would have been left to rot on the scrap heap and made extinct. For some reasons, people love them too much to let them die lol and also idiots like me!! Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel 😀
@@InDadsGarage No worries, I try to watch a load of similar stuff during the day as I currently have a channel only a couple hundred hours short of monetising. Problem is that my car repair videos aren't exactly family friendly so TH-cam don't recommend my shit 🤣

Looks like 300 tdi not td5

New battery needed !
New one on order for the next video 💪. Thanks for watching buddy 🙌
No wonder everyone went for foreign double cabs the pickup body is a joke.mind you I would still have it
Haha, I guess that's the problem with Defenders, bloody stupid but you can't help loving them. Abit like having children I guess!! Thanks for watching and sharing the support 😃
1990 is 34 years 😂
Dude the 90s were only like 20 years ago to me, 2004 was ten years ago I’m sure lol
I thought you said the car was from 1990? Or am I going funny 🤪
Yeah it’s a 1990 mate. But in my head I’m always 10 years out lol did I put 36 on the correction text? Lol
@@InDadsGaragehaha. I missed that. Great video. Funny to 😅

Register your YT channel as a business if you haven’t already and claim all the tax/ expenses through the business that you can. I suspect his old girl may be a Bottomless money pit, however if you have the money, patience and the time, starting from the ground up you will get plenty of content and a decent Defender at the end of thousands of thankless hours and tens of thousands of pounds. Liked and subscribed, good luck!
Hey thank you so much for your support. At the moment YT only pays me pennies so not enough to even claim a coffee back yet lol hopefully with lots of growing support and legends like you that will change and I can earn more to keep investing into the channel continue to build the content. @InDadsGarage get on the land rover sites for plenty of advice and support.
Are you going to learn to weld. Looks like you need to.
YESSSS, it's a tool I'm hoping to get for the garage and give it a go. I think this will be a great project to start and learn on. Any advice on starter welder set up's welcome if you know. Thanks so much for watching 😎

Flip it now, get some of your money…you’re not going to enjoy this project…anyone who has Astro turf is looking for an easy life…LR are not for you I’m sorry
I don’t want my wheels to get dirty! I plan to off-road it on the Astro turf, which I prefer to call, artificial grass. That way it will prevent dirt and mud getting stuck to the underside and rotting the new chassis that I will have to install . Thank you so much for watching and leave a comment Karen. 🙌
