A shocking result from someone that notoriously dislikes Dark Souls III, i'll say that much! Have you played the demo yet? what did you think of it? :')
Dark Souls 3's fast pace is counteracted by the fact that the dodge roll is completely busted and every single boss is designed so that your easiest and best response to any attack is to roll it. The only notable exception to that is Midir. This turns the entire game into just pressing the dodge button any time the boss does anything. Instead of a lot of the slow but lingering attacks of DS2 like Iron King's or Fume Knight's flame attacks or a lot of Elden Ring's delayed attacks, DS3 consists of very quick, very easily dodgeable attacks. They literally only require reaction speed, whereas the other games also require positioning, specific timing and the ability to choose between different responses. It's what makes DS3 the easiest and least engaging Soulsborne game. Fume Knight's 360 fire sword attack alone is more engaging than 90% of attacks in DS3 because instead of just pressing le roll once you see Fume Knight move, you have to either properly position yourself behind him or dodge (usually twice) in specific timings depending on your ADP. That's why this mod's combat feels so satisfying, it's because it reuses movesets from more engaging games
Wonderfully put! I don't think there's anything wrong with DS3 leaning into being more timing based as both Sekiro and Lies of P are definitely that to a T, but yes I think that is what makes the combat lesser in comparison to the other games. They didn't do too much on top of that to make it more interesting.
this all applies to bloodborne, most of the game is extremely reactable and doesnt really demand much from dodge direction and good positioning, hell bb bosses and enemies are far less roll catchy than ds3 enemies and bosses, pontif alone is almost ludwig level when it comes to punishing bad roll timing, i can count the amount of attacks in bb that force you to dodge sideways or face dodge on 2 hands, most of them are very obvious charges from big bosses, and i would say it has an even worse problem than ds3, traversing the game world with a saw cleaver makes 80% of the game world an utter joke, so much of bb is just you walking up to enemies, most of which have no poise, and just press R1 till they die, personally i find bbs world less engaging than ds3s cuz ds3 has alot of heavy poise enemies while most of bb doesnt, but i find the good bb bosses more engaging than ds3's barring the dlcs, and theres also the gun parry cheese, bbs combat only shines with some of its bosses, many of them have their own issues imo, i mean the mid game bosses of bb are easily the worse quality bosses in the series, shadows into rom into one reborn into micolash, just yeesh...ds3 has far higher and more consistent main boss quality. overall i view both on the same level, great games on their own right, but pretty flawed and abit mediocre as souls games imo. i prefer elden ring, ds1 and sekiro.
The mod's combat sucks cause it uses the system that has the least depth and then puts enemies designed around fastest weapon in the series: wolf's katana, unchanged. So you simply can't hit them with stuff like bardiche
I'm also a big fan of Heide's Tower in DS2 on looks alone, so seeing it recreated in DS3's engine at 11:00 is amaaaaazing! This represents sooooo much work from the mod-dev, I am SO impressed! Thank you for showing this off!
Are we talking about the same mod...? They literally put sekiro and bloodborne movesets in ds3, how is it slower?? It's MUCH faster, and if anything I would say its main issue is that you just can't keep up. My experience with this mod is they need to give you a big boost to stamina, almost like Elden Ring, if they want it to work. Most bosses force you into an extremely passive playstyle of staying away, dodging, hitting once, retreating to regenerate stamina. Good for you if you like that sort of gameplay I guess, but I'd rather stay in close quarters and actually fight the boss...
Ds1 allowed you to get up to 20 estus flasks. Ds2 was 12 but you also had infinite lifegems. DS3 is 15 max. Your arguments for DS3 is bad are probably the flimsiest I've heard. Haven't even played the DLCs😂 Archthrones uses enemy movesets from both Sekiro and Elden Ring which are "faster" (you might say) than DS3.
I don't wanna invalidate your opinion or feelings here, but Elden Ring has the exact same frame data or values as Dark Souls 3 for: Movement speed and animations. Stun and Stagger animations. Roll animations and s. Stamina regeneration. Weight thresholds. Estus = Flask of Tears drink speed and animation. Equivalent Spells (eg. Heal Aid = Urgent Heal). Equivalent Weapons (eg. Hollowslayer = Kight's GS). The following enemies have the same frame data for movement, animations, stagger, and most if not all of their attacks, although some received a small number of new moves: Straight Sword Hollows = Foot Soldiers. [X Demigod] Knight (especially spear) = Lothric Knight (specially spear). Grub Infested Corpse = Putrid Corpse. Thrall = Fanged Imps. Dogs. Rats. Slimes. And this is just a small snippet! I don't understand how you've convinced yourself into believing these two games are *so different* that you love one and hate the other, that one has the best combat system and the other has the worst. The combat pacing and enemy placement seems so similar to me that I fail completely to find any meaningful differences that aren't just "this is a new enemy" or "oh, I can running heavy attack, guard counter, and standing jump attack now", which yeah, gives more depth (and brings afloat other inconsistencies the game has tho), but doesn't solve the other issues you mention that would be inherent to both games, like for example "there aren't that many one on one fights in DS3 like the ones I like" but then again this is also lacking in Elden ring, isn't it? Anyways, I like most of the video you did, don't get me wrong.
"that one has the best combat system and the other has the worst" if youre implying that ds3 has the best combat system while elden ring has the worst, then frankly i find that kinda laughable to be quite frank, its ds3 combat with far more depth than ds3 in both character and enemy combat. the attack options you mentioned do not in anyway shape or form bring affloat any inconsistencies, the games combat is just better, deeper and allows for more combat options than many veterans failed to utilize then complain about the game, many souls vets like yourselves just thought its a carbon copy of ds3 combat and got destroyed for it, and im glad more veterans are waking up the joseph anderson nostalgia delusions. 1:27 and even has like a sandworm which is kinda fun- me: wait how he doesn’t know about the sandworm being in the base game ?? *some seconds later… “Ds3 isn’t my favorite game” Ah 😅
Honestly, I rarely used Bloodborne's Rally system. Enemies just hit too hard and too fast to realistically feel safe to retaliate on the more dangerous enemies and bosses. Your hunter's mobility is also just high enough to disengage safely and heal up with vials. At the very least DS3's stamina cost for rolling is tiny so you can comfortably spam rolls when you're not sure you can dodge something until you get the timing down. As for the enemies being too fast in DS3. Yeah it's kind of ridiculous. Lothric Knights immediately come to mind because all three variants have one attack that is essentially unreactable. And Lothric Knights are in the very first main area of the game and they hit way too hard with some random Bloodborne tier speed attack. Black Knights in contrast hit hard because they weren't standard enemies and were designed to be a challenge for early game players that rewarded them with a high level upgrade material or even their weapon or shield. Black Knights also telegraphed their attacks very well for you to either dodge or parry if you were ballsy enough or just experienced enough given how they can one shot early game players with ease. DS3 is also the first Souls game where I stopped bothering to try to parry enemies because it just wasn't worth it due to how fast some parryable enemies are on top of how hard they hit. Elden Ring also has this problem but Elden Ring's problem with parrying is that it just isn't necessary. You can break enemy posture for a critical or just attacking the stance broken enemy with R1s, a charged R2 while they are vulnerable, or an Ash of War that might even deal more damage than the critical. Some enemies and, especially the bosses, have damage sponge tier health so even the parryable ones are too risky to even try.
Yeah, the thing about rally is that it's only really a useful mechanic in the early game. It doesn't scale with your HP or enemy damage as you progress, so eventually it becomes an afterthought. Anytime I see people singing the praises of the rally mechanic I can't help but wonder if they've ever even played Bloodborne.
