The text feature can be used if you are in a webinar as a host and want to welcome guests without having to type each message. Also good for timed messages withing meetings and webinars. PURPOSE OF HOTKEY SWITCH: Purpose and Application of Hotkey Switch: The Hotkey Switch allows you to assign a keyboard shortcut (or hotkey) that toggles between two states (e.g., ON/OFF, START/STOP, ENABLE/DISABLE) with a single press. The key feature of the Hotkey Switch is that it remembers the state it’s in and alternates between the two on each press. Common Applications: Here are some practical uses for the Hotkey Switch on Stream Deck: 1. OBS Studio Controls Toggle Mute/Unmute: You can set up a hotkey that mutes and unmutes your microphone in OBS or other software. Toggle Start/Stop Recording: Assign a hotkey that starts and stops recording or streaming in OBS, using the same button for both actions. Toggle Source Visibility: If you have an image or text layer in OBS, you can use a hotkey switch to show/hide that layer, such as for showing a lower-third graphic or watermark. 2. Application Control Toggle Play/Pause in Media Players: You can create a Hotkey Switch to play or pause your media player (like VLC or Spotify) using the global hotkeys for those applications. Toggle Between Fullscreen and Windowed Mode: Assign a hotkey to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode in games, video players, or other apps that support this functionality. 3. Productivity Workflow Enable/Disable Do Not Disturb Mode: You can use a hotkey switch to toggle the "Do Not Disturb" mode on your computer. Toggle Dark/Light Mode: If your system supports a keyboard shortcut for switching between light and dark mode, you can set that up with the Hotkey Switch. Switch Between Apps or Desktops: Use the Hotkey Switch to cycle between virtual desktops or specific apps using hotkeys. 4. Gaming Controls Toggle Push-to-Talk (PTT): If you use a push-to-talk feature in games or communication apps like Discord, you can set up a hotkey switch to toggle between push-to-talk enabled and disabled. Toggle Crouch/Sprint in Games: Many games allow you to assign hotkeys to actions like crouch or sprint. The Hotkey Switch can toggle these actions on and off without holding the key down. 5. Presentation Tools Toggle Fullscreen/Windowed PowerPoint Presentation: Use a hotkey switch to start and stop fullscreen presentations in PowerPoint. Control Laser Pointer/Mouse: Toggle between different pointer or cursor modes when presenting. How to Set Up a Hotkey Switch: Open the Stream Deck Software. Locate the "Hotkey Switch" Action: On the left-hand side, under SYSTEM, you’ll find "Hotkey Switch". Drag this action to an available button on your Stream Deck. Configure Hotkeys: In the Action Settings on the right side, you’ll see two fields: Hotkey (On) and Hotkey (Off). Hotkey (On): Assign the hotkey that activates the first action or state (e.g., "Ctrl + M" to mute your mic). Hotkey (Off): Assign the hotkey for the second action or state (e.g., "Ctrl + M" again to unmute your mic). Customize the Button: You can label your button with something relevant (e.g., "Mute/Unmute") and assign an icon if desired. Test the Hotkey Switch: Press the button on your Stream Deck to toggle between the two states (e.g., muting/unmuting your mic). Example Scenario: Toggling Mute/Unmute in Zoom: Let’s say you want to toggle your microphone in Zoom. You could set "Alt + A" as your mute/unmute hotkey in Zoom. Assign that hotkey to both the On and Off states in the Hotkey Switch. Now, pressing the Stream Deck button will toggle between muting and unmuting your mic, depending on its current state. Benefits: Efficiency: The Hotkey Switch combines two actions into one button, allowing you to save space and toggle between states more efficiently. Streamlined Workflow: It simplifies toggling between tasks or application modes without having to remember multiple keyboard shortcuts. Global Application: You can assign hotkeys for any application that supports keyboard shortcuts.

Tnx for this video, this will help me a lot. 1 Q. Will the streamdeck see all the programs i have on my pc or do i need too activate them in stream deck, like OBS,?
Hi Mathew! Great video...I will be using the text button quite a bit. When in sales I have a set of responses that I just copy and paste depending on what part of the ladder my lead or client is on. It's super convenient to just hit a button and give my client a generated response that I've predesigned for most scenarios. I have at the moment 10 answers ready to go at any given moment.
Thank you *so* much! My stream deck should be here on Tuesday, and I'm so looking forward to it. I'm a mod on a very popular weather YT channel and just being able to use the "text" macro button will save me having to type the same things over and over in live stream chat. It will also help me access other sites while the streams are live, so I can get important information to those that need it. You explained everything so well!
@@MathewTheBest True story: I got the Stream Deck tuesday about 20 minutes before the Live Stream started. I had everything I needed loaded into 4 "folders" on the stream deck in >10 minutes. That was thanks to your video because you had explained it so well. This stream deck is a godsend to me and is helping me soooo much!

Why is the text one useful? Take email signatures, for example; if you have multiple email platforms, you can program a signature that can be quickly implemented without having to rewrite it in each platform's signature feature.
PURPOSE OF THE TEXT BUTTON: The TEXT button under the SYSTEM section in Stream Deck is used to send predefined text to an active window or application. This can automate repetitive text entries, trigger chat messages, or input commands without needing to type manually each time. Purpose: The TEXT action allows you to send a predefined string of text or even formatted data directly into an active field or application, as if you were typing it. This is particularly useful for quickly sending common responses, commands, or text sequences during your workflow or live streams. How to Use the Text Button: 1. Open the Stream Deck software. 2. Find the TEXT action under the SYSTEM category on the left panel. 3. Drag the TEXT action to an available button on your Stream Deck. 4. In the Action Settings on the right, type the desired text in the field provided. 5. You can also assign a label and icon to the button to easily identify its purpose. When you press the Stream Deck button, the text you configured will be "typed" into whatever application or text field is currently active. Practical Examples of Using the TEXT Button: 1. For Live Streaming (Twitch, TH-cam, etc.): - Quick Chat Responses: Automate frequent messages or responses in chat. For example, if you frequently thank new subscribers or followers, you could set up a button with the text: `"Thank you for the follow! Welcome to the stream!"`. When someone follows, press the button, and the message is instantly sent. - Sending Commands to Chat: If you're running a bot that takes chat commands (e.g., `!songrequest`, `!play`), you can set a button to send these commands without typing them manually.
Example: - Text: `!songrequest` - Automatically triggers a song request in chat when pressed.
2. For Gaming: - Quick Communication in Games: In multiplayer games where typing messages is common (e.g., MMO or team-based games), you can use the TEXT button to send predefined chat messages. For instance, if you're playing a team-based game, you can set up buttons for quick communication like `"Enemy spotted at mid!"` or `"Need backup!"`.
Example: - Text: `"Push now! Attack the tower!"` - Sends a predefined strategy message in the in-game chat. 3. For Productivity: - Email Templates: Use the TEXT button to automate the entry of common email responses. For example, you could set up a button with a pre-written message like: `"Thank you for reaching out. I'll get back to you shortly."` - Form Filling: If you're constantly filling out forms or inputting the same information in different applications (like your name, email, or other repetitive data), you can configure the TEXT button to autofill those fields.
Example: - Text: `"John Doe, john@example.com, 555-555-5555"` - Automatically fills in your contact information when pressed. 4. For Social Media Management: - Predefined Responses or Hashtags: If you're frequently replying to social media posts with similar responses or hashtags, you can use the TEXT button to quickly input these responses.
Example: - Text: `"Thank you for your comment! Feel free to DM me for more info."` - Text: `" AI Tech StreamDeck"` - Instantly add common hashtags to a tweet or Instagram post. 5. For Development: - Inserting Code Snippets: As a developer, you can set up the TEXT button to quickly insert frequently used code snippets or shortcuts into your IDE or text editor.
Example: - Text: `console.log('Debugging...');` - Quickly inserts a debug message into your code. - Text: ` ` - Inserts an HTML template when creating a new file. 6. For Virtual Events or Webinars: - Auto Response in Q&A: If you're hosting a virtual event or webinar and get repetitive questions, you can use the TEXT button to send a predefined response in the Q&A or chat window.
Example: - Text: `"We'll be addressing all questions at the end of the session. Please stay tuned!"` 7. For Customer Support: - Common Support Responses: If you're providing live chat or customer support, you can set up quick responses to common questions or issues.
Example: - Text: `"Have you tried restarting your device? If the issue persists, please contact our support team at support@example.com."` 8. For Task Automation: - Filling in Default Values in Software: If you use specific software that requires frequent entry of the same text or commands (such as working in spreadsheets, CRM tools, or design software), the TEXT button can help speed up the process.
Example: - Text: `"=SUM(A1:A10)"` - Quickly inputs a formula in Excel or Google Sheets.
9. For Video Editing or Post-Production: - Quick Filename or Metadata Entry: You can use the TEXT button to quickly input common filenames, metadata tags, or time codes when managing assets or editing videos.
Example: - Text: `"MyProject_Draft_v1"` - Automatically enters a standard project filename. Benefits: - Time-Saving: Automates repetitive text entry or commands that you frequently use, speeding up workflows. - Consistency: Ensures that predefined messages are accurate and consistent every time. - Streamlined Communication: Allows for quick responses in live chats, games, or communication tools without needing to type manually. - Increased Efficiency: Helps you automate mundane tasks like filling out forms, responding to common questions, or entering code snippets. Limitations: - The TEXT button only works for simple text entries; it won't perform complex actions unless combined with other commands (e.g., through multi-actions or hotkey switches). - The text will only be "typed" into an active window where the text input field is selected, so you'll need to have the right application or window in focus when pressing the button.
I can see this thing being useful for my day-to-day computer use even though I only stream casually and very occasionally so I'm gonna get it! I can already think of endless ways I could use this! E.g. for the hotkey switch where you said you can't think of what anyone could do with it, that can be useful if you are copy/pasting a lot of stuff and just have one button which alternates between CTRL+C > CTRL+V (a dumb example but shows how useful even a feature like that can be). Honestly after watching this video I'm convinced this is an essential gadget that everyone should have on their desks for productivity and efficiency!
Anyone knows if there is a way to make a button that lets you create a custom list/multi-actions? So lIke you press one and it opens your start menu on your PC then opens Google Chrome? That would be using many keyboard shortcuts for a button to create an Action. I know that you can do this with my Logitech G502 mouse using their software program so I would think Elgato Stream Deck would also have something like that as well.
Was unsure of buying it but since watching this video, I ordered it and waiting for arrival! Thank you for the good in-depth video I needed to set my mind!
@@rainer6367 15 key ma man. Don’t need the 32 key in my opinion. Fits me very well as it’s easy to use, setup, and work with. Lots of macros you can on it to do just about anything.
Actually the text thing is really helpful if you are doing forms or need to constantly enter the same info all the time. Mainly when you need to enter NAME, Address, Zip, email, then repeat.
This video has made me feel more confident buying a steam deck. Thanks for showing off the folder feature. Now I know I dont have to get the XL for more options.
Great video...why more informative than what Stream Deck has on their own site. Do you or anyone reading comments know how to record a Lightroom Classic preset to a hotkey?
Hot key switch: That sounds awesome for two hot keys that come in pairs, like copy and paste. Text: That is extremely useful for repetitive text like code. Boilerplate button.
i like the video alot, just ordered my stream deck, the 32 key edition. ill be watching this again when it comes in! thanks again big dog. what i would actually like to see is how to have my twitch chat etc on one screen while im streaming COD on my main monitor.
What kind of camera are you using it’s crystal clear I have a canon eos m50 haven’t set it up yet still learning I have the 32 key stream deck & go xlr
Excellent explanation. My unit arrived today (15 buttons) Can I get it to open a program and also go to a folder showing actions within that program? So. I'd like an icon on the first screen which will open Cubase and then the StreamDeck will automatically jump to a new folder which has PLAY STOP etc buttons within Cubase for me to press. Thanks in advance
you say just close the app after you finishing the setup, but dont you still have to have it open to use the deck?cause if i close mine my buttons dont work my pc,i have to be running it in the background
Can you help with something? I want an IFTTT with Google Chat, they just added this functionality. I know stream deck does not have direct integration. How can I activate a Google Chat Message using stream deck and IFTTT? Thank you much!!
I’m interested is getting a stream deck but where dose it hook up to my monitor my pc where dose it go I’m assuming the monitor since you edit the software it uses
Quick question about the hotkeys man. I know you said you can type in a certain command like Ctrl + J. But what about if it was something that didnt have a typing command? Like it HAS TO be clicked in that application. Could the deck also capture a hotkey in that way? Or does it have to be a typing command? Thank you in advance.
That text hotkey would be awesome when your streaming and people ask what system I’m running or they ask what your online name is for your streaming accounts. Just press the buttons and then you’re done
Hi Matthew, great and informative video. One question: After downloading and installing the Elgato software, I don't see the OBS Studio in the column of options on the right of the screen. Where do I locate it? Thanks in advance
I own one for about three hours. And I love it, but, suddenly the buttons are all black. They do work, and the software still works, I tried other cables, different ports, but nothing helps. The device does work, but all the buttons are black :(
Thank you Mathew. Best video for learning System Functions basics. Like how to use open, hotkey, website, and text functions. BTW found a great use for text. Repeated placement of verbiage in an email subject or document like 'Confidential Document Attached' .
Currently I have my consoles hooked up to my tv(both PS5 and Xbox X) and i am on the verge of getting into streaming. I have a capture card, stream deck, 2 monitors and a kinivo hdmi 3 port switch. What i would like to know is how can i keep my consoles connected to my home theatre system but also run it to me my pc and monitors without unhooking??? i think i make sense with what i am asking as there will be days i just wanna play without having to stream and have me time. Thanks in advance for any help
You produce great videos. When I first started watching I thought you were a hundred thousand subscriber TH-camr. You produce better quality videos too.
The text hot key could be great for plugging your merch or links to you other channels yin youtube or Instagram description. Same with hashtags your commently use. Just a thought
One question I have that I can’t see an answer to, is that once a button/action is created on one screen, is how/is it possible to copy/cut and paste it onto another button, on another screen? Thanks in advance.

PURPOSE OF THE TEXT BUTTON:
The TEXT button under the SYSTEM section in Stream Deck is used to send predefined text to an active window or application. This can automate repetitive text entries, trigger chat messages, or input commands without needing to type manually each time.
Purpose:
The TEXT action allows you to send a predefined string of text or even formatted data directly into an active field or application, as if you were typing it. This is particularly useful for quickly sending common responses, commands, or text sequences during your workflow or live streams.
How to Use the Text Button:
Practical Examples of Using the TEXT Button:
1. For Live Streaming (Twitch, TH-cam, etc.):
- Quick Chat Responses: Automate frequent messages or responses in chat.
Example:
- Text: `!songrequest` - Automatically triggers a song request in chat when pressed.
2. For Gaming:
- Quick Communication in Games: In multiplayer games where typing messages is common (e.g., MMO or team-based games), you can use the TEXT button to send predefined chat messages. For instance, if you're playing a team-based game, you can set up buttons for quick communication like `"Enemy spotted at mid!"` or `"Need backup!"`.

- Text: `"Push now! Attack the tower!"` - Sends a predefined strategy message in the in-game chat.
3. For Productivity:
- Email Templates: Use the TEXT button to automate the entry of common email responses. For example, you could set up a button with a pre-written message like: `"Thank you for reaching out. I'll get back to you shortly."`
- Form Filling: If you're constantly filling out forms or inputting the same information in different applications (like your name, email, or other repetitive data), you can configure the TEXT button to autofill those fields.
Example:
- Text: `"John Doe, john@example.com, 555-555-5555"` - Automatically fills in your contact information when pressed.
4. For Social Media Management:
- Predefined Responses or Hashtags: If you're frequently replying to social media posts with similar responses or hashtags, you can use the TEXT button to quickly input these responses.
Example:
- Text: `"Thank you for your comment! Feel free to DM me for more info."`
- Text: `" AI Tech StreamDeck"` - Instantly add common hashtags to a tweet or Instagram post.
5. For Development:
- Inserting Code Snippets: As a developer, you can set up the TEXT button to quickly insert frequently used code snippets or shortcuts into your IDE or text editor.
Example:
- Text: `console.log('Debugging...');` - Quickly inserts a debug message into your code.
- Text: ` ` - Inserts an HTML template when creating a new file.
6. For Virtual Events or Webinars:
- Auto Response in Q&A: If you're hosting a virtual event or webinar and get repetitive questions, you can use the TEXT button to send a predefined response in the Q&A or chat window.
Example:
- Text: `"We'll be addressing all questions at the end of the session. Please stay tuned!"`
7. For Customer Support:
- Common Support Responses: If you're providing live chat or customer support, you can set up quick responses to common questions or issues.
Example:
- Text: `"Have you tried restarting your device? If the issue persists, please contact our support team at support@example.com."`
8. For Task Automation:
- Filling in Default Values in Software: If you use specific software that requires frequent entry of the same text or commands (such as working in spreadsheets, CRM tools, or design software), the TEXT button can help speed up the process.
Example:
- Text: `"=SUM(A1:A10)"` - Quickly inputs a formula in Excel or Google Sheets.
9. For Video Editing or Post-Production:
- Quick Filename or Metadata Entry: You can use the TEXT button to quickly input common filenames, metadata tags, or time codes when managing assets or editing videos.
Example:
- Text: `"MyProject_Draft_v1"` - Automatically enters a standard project filename.
Benefits:
- Time-Saving: Automates repetitive text entry or commands that you frequently use, speeding up workflows.
Limitations:
- The TEXT button only works for simple text entries; it won't perform complex actions unless combined with other commands (e.g., through multi-actions or hotkey switches).

For hotkey switch, one use I will be using it for is when in adobe when switching between the razer and pointer.
100%. This product goes beyond just streaming alone. Lots of uses for work and Macros
my stock market coach uses elgato in day trades and scalping. do u know how that works??? i really enjoyed this video by the way, very helpful
This is the first time ive heard of it being used for stock trades and scalping but ill look into it. Thank you!
I just got my stream desk. This was very helpful.
For the hotkey switch option. I have that set up for gaming. I use it as a on/off switch
Thanks Matt, this was really helpful!
Was unsure of buying it but since watching this video, I ordered it and waiting for arrival! Thank you for the good in-depth video I needed to set my mind!
Got the 15 or 32 key? And? How does it fit to you?
@@rainer6367 15 key ma man. Don’t need the 32 key in my opinion. Fits me very well as it’s easy to use, setup, and work with. Lots of macros you can on it to do just about anything.
@@evocdl thank you! Ordered the 15 key one earlier today but was not sure to wait for better pricing of 32. Have a great evening
you can use the hotkey switch for like copy paste, you only use one button. Its Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V, so on and so forth
you are a great teacher, thanks
Mathew, how can I ad streamyard to Elgato?
Actually the text thing is really helpful if you are doing forms or need to constantly enter the same info all the time.
Mainly when you need to enter NAME, Address, Zip, email, then repeat.
this thing is actually pretty neat, I will look into getting one once I start my YT channel
Thanks for this alot. Getting my deck next week, pretty excited, thanks for this Video.
I just want to add my web cam and switch between them do you have a video for this?
I have learnt a couple of things from your video, thanks!
Appreciate the in depth breakdown. Order mine and can’t wait! 🍻
Thanks for the intro to Streamdeck tutorial brah
If you're playing a game and you specify one key to open something, and the other to close. The hotkey alternate would suit this scenario well.
Hot key switch: That sounds awesome for two hot keys that come in pairs, like copy and paste.
Text: That is extremely useful for repetitive text like code. Boilerplate button.
Can I use this as a soundboard while dj’ing?
Hi i've just bought a stream deck and you've really helped me out :) Keep up with the good work
Subbed just because how well done this was.
As soon as he hit a button, an ad started. I was like, WOW! You can create ads on my screen too?!
i like the video alot, just ordered my stream deck, the 32 key edition. ill be watching this again when it comes in! thanks again big dog. what i would actually like to see is how to have my twitch chat etc on one screen while im streaming COD on my main monitor.
Thank you! And yeah thats doable within the obs panels up in the top left. You just have to enable it
This was very helpful, thank you so much!
What kind of camera are you using it’s crystal clear I have a canon eos m50 haven’t set it up yet still learning I have the 32 key stream deck & go xlr
so basically it's a button for your favorite software on your pc?
Excellent explanation. My unit arrived today (15 buttons) Can I get it to open a program and also go to a folder showing actions within that program?
So. I'd like an icon on the first screen which will open Cubase and then the StreamDeck will automatically jump to a new folder which has PLAY STOP etc buttons within Cubase for me to press. Thanks in advance
you say just close the app after you finishing the setup, but dont you still have to have it open to use the deck?cause if i close mine my buttons dont work my pc,i have to be running it in the background
Thank you 🙏🏻 first video I watched. Very helpful!
you can use the hotkey switch for ctrl+v and ctrl+c
Yes! All hotkeys work!
Thanks for this video, it helped me get started setting up my stream deck.
Amazing vid, thanks for explaining!
No problem!
Very informative. Thank you
the ninja tweet made me laugh, thanks for delivering info in the way that you do.
Glad you enjoyed!
Can you help with something? I want an IFTTT with Google Chat, they just added this functionality. I know stream deck does not have direct integration. How can I activate a Google Chat Message using stream deck and IFTTT? Thank you much!!
Hey Matthew I subscribe and hit likes awesome Tutorial
I am for sure getting this down the road thank you so much bro
No problem!
Hey great in depth video. I like your open & honest personality too. Keep pushing content bruh!
Thank you! I appreciate that!
I don't understand it because I don't have the same options as you in the app. I don't have the options: youtube, twitter etc.
The text can be used for bot commands in stream
I’m interested is getting a stream deck but where dose it hook up to my monitor my pc where dose it go I’m assuming the monitor since you edit the software it uses
Quick question about the hotkeys man. I know you said you can type in a certain command like Ctrl + J. But what about if it was something that didnt have a typing command? Like it HAS TO be clicked in that application. Could the deck also capture a hotkey in that way? Or does it have to be a typing command? Thank you in advance.
What programs are you using to make video or stream obs is to hard an stream labs sucks please help great video helped me so much
That text hotkey would be awesome when your streaming and people ask what system I’m running or they ask what your online name is for your streaming accounts. Just press the buttons and then you’re done
A little late but what if I wanna open a website on a different explorer instead of chrome and not wanting to change my default one? any chances?
Hello I was wondering what is the rgb live background wallpaper in this video?
Hi Matthew, great and informative video. One question: After downloading and installing the Elgato software, I don't see the OBS Studio in the column of options on the right of the screen. Where do I locate it? Thanks in advance
I own one for about three hours. And I love it, but, suddenly the buttons are all black. They do work, and the software still works, I tried other cables, different ports, but nothing helps. The device does work, but all the buttons are black :(
I've purchase one because of your video thanks.
Can I program short clips... applause, explosion sound, funny gifs, fake laughs? Thanks
Thank you Mathew. Best video for learning System Functions basics. Like how to use open, hotkey, website, and text functions. BTW found a great use for text. Repeated placement of verbiage in an email subject or document like 'Confidential Document Attached' .
how to change LANGUAGE of the app..?????
I'm sorry make I gotta give u a thumbs up. Bday gift from wife and u helped me get started
Yo where did you get that desktop background/wallpaper at?
You produce great videos. When I first started watching I thought you were a hundred thousand subscriber TH-camr. You produce better quality videos too.

Great video. Question where did you get the wallpaper on your desktop from
@matthewthebest Where did you get that desktop wallpaper? That is awesome! I appreciate the work on and the info in this video.
Wallpaper Engine on Steam!
Right click button, copy. Right click empty button, paste.
Thank you so much you just save my Hole day
Thanks for watching!
Amazing videos I was looking to get one and because of your video I am
